  • Woman seeks dissolution of 29-year-old marriage over assault

An Ibadan-based businesswoman, Adejoke Ariyo, yesterday sought the dissolution of her 29-year-old marriage to her husband, Adeyemi Ariyo, at a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan over assaults.

The petitioner told the court that she was tired of her husband’s frequent threats to tear gas her as well as battery.

Adejoke, who lives at Ago-Awawu in Sanyo area of Ibadan, said she could no longer bear the ceaseless battery from her husband.

She said: “My lord, I have become a subject of ridicule and molestation in the last 16 years of my union with Adeyemi. He brutalised me day and night. Anytime Adeyemi did not see me in the shop, he would accuse me of fornication. He would attack me. I had endured with his battery for 16 years thinking that he would soon turn a new leaf. Adeyemi was not only beating me, he recently also tear-gassed me, thereby exposing my life to more danger. Here is the picture I took with my phone after he tear gassed my face. I don’t think that I am safe in his house anymore,” Adejoke said.

The respondent, however, opposed the divorce.

He denied all the allegations levelled against him by the petitioner.

Adeyemi, an officer with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) pleaded with the court to safe his marriage.

“My lord, the bane of Adejoke is disobedience and pride, she no longer takes instructions from me. As a matter of fact, Adejoke has been denying me sex since 2017. Anytime I made advances at her, she would tell me that I was smelling. I have been totally committed to her welfare and that of our children,” Adeyemi said.

The president of the court, Mrs Imoleayo Akinrodoye, urged the duo to embrace peace by allowing for reconciliation.

Akinrodoye then invited the parties into her chamber for reconciliation.

The matter continues on September 13.

  • Woman ‘fakes’ self-kidnap, daughter to dupe husband N15m

The police yesterday paraded a 45-year-old woman, Hadijat Kabir for allegedly faking kidnap of herself and her sick daughter, Hamidat, 18, in order to fleece her husband of N15 million.

Mrs Kabir was arrested alongside Ahmed Kudos, 29, who allegedly negotiated ransom with the woman’s husband, Alhaji Kabir Muraino as well as the wife of a native doctor, Adijat Rufai, 39, said to be a member of the gang.

According to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, the native doctor, Wasiu Rufai, Luqmon Ahmed and one Jossy were being trailed by the police in connection to the matter.

He said Alhaji Muriano had reported to the police on August 2, at about 3:30pm that he received a call from his wife, who was on her way to a psychiatric hospital with their daughter, that they have been kidnapped.

Edgal said: “The man reported at Ikotun Police Station that the kidnappers were demanding N15 million ransom.

“Based on this, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad were directed to ensure speedy rescue of the hostages and arrest of the suspects. Investigation revealed that the kidnappers were making their demands from Ado-Odo community in Ogun State.

“The operatives busted the  kidnappers’ den. The hostages were rescued and the  suspects were arrested.

“When the wife was debriefed, she confessed that she planned her kidnap with the suspects arrested to defraud her husband. She named those on the run as members of the syndicate.”

Mrs Kabir told reporters she plotted the kidnap because her husband was not caring for her needs.

She said: “I bore four children for him. He has two wives and I am the first. I have been with him for 27 years. I did not use my daughter for ritual. I just wanted money from my husband.

“He would always shout at me if I requested for money. He would not even tell me gently, he would always flare up. I was a fashion designer before I married him. My daughter has been convulsive since she was a kid.

“My family members would call me to ask for money even my mum but I do not have any money to give them. I would ask my husband for money, he would not give me. I asked him for just N500,000 and he refused. We were not kidnapped. We just hid at a place and contacted him.”

But her husband denied allegations of negligence, claiming that he opened a shop for her and also gave her N300,000 and their son added N150,000 to it recently.

He said he had complained to her parents that she was wayward and unfaithful and had told them he would send her back home not knowing that she was nursing such a plan.

Kudus, a betting company employee, said he knew the woman through his brother, Ahmed Lukman, a panel beater, who’s her lover.

He said: “They do lodge in a hotel called Church Hotel. They usually spent close to three hours there. So, they called me over. I asked them why they did not come straight to the house instead of lodging in a hotel, she told me her daughter is sick and she wanted to take her for treatment. I told her she should have taken her to the hospital instead of coming to Ogun State. She said it is not the work of a hospital that a herbalist was capable of treating her daughter. The two men I met there left immediately.

“I spoke to the woman’s husband on phone while the woman pretended to be crying and was talking about a million naira during the conversation.

“The woman was like it was too small that he should make it N4 million. I was surprised, so they explained to me. I spoke to the man and asked if he had made any promise to them he said yes that he told them one million naira. I asked him to give them and I left. I did not collect any money from them.”

Mrs. Rufai said she was arrested because her husband fled, adding that she had nothing to do with the crime.

  • Woman wakes up with .91metre python in her bed

A woman in the United Kingdom (UK) got the “fright of her life” when she woke up to find a .91metre  (3ft) snake snuggled up next to her in bed.

The royal python, believed to be an escaped pet, had curled up next to her as she slept.

After jumping out of bed she rushed out of her bedroom and closed the door before calling the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) for help.

However, by the time the charity’s animal collection officer Jill Sanders had arrived at her flat in Kensington, west London, the snake had slithered away and could not be found.

Ms Sanders said: “The poor resident must have had the fright of their life waking up to a snake in their bed.

“They jumped out of bed and closed their bedroom door to contain the snake but, when I arrived, I couldn’t find where the python had slithered to.

“I left my details and told them to contact me as soon as they saw it again.”

The python was eventually caught by Ms Sanders in a corridor the following evening when she was called back to the flat.

The RSPCA does not know how it got inside the property, but believes it must have escaped from its owner nearby.

The animal welfare charity says it collects more snakes in the summer as they have more energy in the warm weather and are good escape artists.

Ms Sanders added: “I’ve been called out to a number of stray snakes in recent weeks and many of these appear to be escaped pets.

“We would always recommend owners invest in an enclosure suitable for the particular species and that the enclosure is kept secure, and locked if necessary, when unattended.

“Reptiles, particularly snakes, can be extremely good escape artists and will take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure door, or a loose-fitting lid.”

  • Woman ‘throws’ granddaughter inside well

Niger State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old grandmother, Aisha Ibrahim, for allegedly killing her two-year-old granddaughter by throwing her inside a well.

The Nation learnt the suspect allegedly tied the granddaughter with a rope and threw her inside the well in their house at Karaya Fulani Camp, in Rafi Local Government of Niger State.

Aisha said she carried out the act because she had been looking for a way to punish her daughter-in-law, adding she threw the deceased inside well because her mother (the suspect’s daughter-in-law) insulted and assaulted her.

It was gathered the grandmother saw an opportunity to carry out her act when her son, Bello Ibrahim and his wife left their child in her care and attended a naming ceremony in a neighbouring village.

The suspect said: “I instructed my husband to tell our son to divorce his wife, but he did not listen. My daughter-in-law is fond of insulting and assaulting me.

“I felt the only way I could pay her back was to tie her daughter with a rope and throw her inside well to die, so that she would feel the pains and agonies I have been experiencing.

“We lived in peace as one family before my son married her. I have 12 children. All of us live in one compound. She cannot come from nowhere to cause disunity in the family I have suffered for years to keep together as one. It’s unacceptable.”

Aisha, who was nabbed by the police from Kagara Division while trying to escape, said she regretted her action.

Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said the suspect would be arraigned after investigation.

  • True colour of a woman

Now this is a tricky one. Even Hardball knows enough to step gingerly around this one; a wise man must handle the matter of the opposite sex with uncommon equanimity and the measuredness of a sage. If only because you are a man and in some way or the other, you would need a woman or her service. So matters of femininity must be treated with the delicateness they require.

Now, do not take the above title literally; it’s not about the complexion and tone of the fair sex. Notwithstanding that most of us African men now have a bit of difficulty discerning the real texture and coloration of the skin of the typical African belle. Over the years Western civilisation – not to mention cosmetics – has eroded the rich tonality of the original African woman’s skin. The much-cherished luscious glister of the female dark skin was organic aphrodisiac of sort, especially in the half dawn moments of conjugal co-efficiencies.

But this is not about new-day African woman skincare methods; far from it. Hardball is troubled here today, about the make-up (again, not cosmetic), character and constitution of the average Nigerian woman. Who is this person? What is her psychological state? Is there a common glitch bordering on the pathological and homicidal?

Now consider this story before we return to the question of the true colour of the African woman: a housewife in Owerri West Local Government of Imo State reportedly forced her niece to eat a dead chicken raw.

As recounted by a neighbour, she was returning from her shop and overheard the woman (Ugochi) telling someone to finish that thing. She was going to pass by but the anguished cry of a little girl ignited her curiosity. She stopped to look and behold, she saw the little girl (Chiamaka) eating a dead fowl raw. She was aghast and beckoned on other residents. According to the witness’s account, the little girl, who looks like a seven-year-old even though she is 12, is subjected to perpetual torment by her aunt.

The accused (Ugochi) denied that the chicken was raw: “It is not true that I asked her to eat the chicken raw, although I was angry. I came back and met my fowl dead. When I asked her what happened, she said she didn’t know. I forced her to cook the chicken and eat it.”

Hardball asks again: what is the true colour of a woman? Some have wagered that it only comes alive when you keep her in charge of another woman’s child.

Recently, cases of hot water baths, hot iron burns, solitary confinements, sometimes in chains, are rife – always against the other woman’s child. This psychopathic tendency would stand a good academic study; Hardball recommends.

  • Woman charged with ‘coveting’ N1m

A 23-year-old woman, Zainab Abubakar, was yesterday arraigned at a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly misappropriating her friend’s N1 million. Abubakar, whose address was not provided, was arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal misappropriation, criminal breach of trust, cheating and threat to life.

Prosecutor Fidelis Ogugbe told the court Mustapha Ibrahim, of 24 Crescent, Gwarinpa, Abuja, on April 17, reported the matter at the Inspector-General of Police, Special Tactical Squad, Abuja.

He said the complainant, who had issues with his debit card, directed two people to pay money into the defendant’s account.

The prosecutor said Ibrahim alleged those he directed to do so, transferred N1 million and N550,000 into the defendant’s account, but she converted the amount to her use.

He said during investigation, the defendant confessed to have committed the offences, and returned N550,000.

Ogugbe said when Ibrahim later approached her to refund the balance N1 million, the defendant threatened to deal with him. He said the defendant jumped bail after her temporary release, but was re-arrested six weeks later.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 309, 312, 322 and 397 of the Penal Code. Abubakar pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Theresa Otu admitted her to bail at N200, 000 with one surety.

She adjourned the case till August 17 for hearing.
