  • Trader stabs woman for ‘dating’ husband

    A 22-year-old trader, Kuburat Sanni, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly stabbing a woman accused of dating her husband.

    Mrs Sanni, who lives at Akindia Street, Agege, Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace, assault and conspiracy.

    Prosecuting officer Kehinde Olatunde, said that the accused and others still at large allegedly committed the offences on July 9 at her residence.

    He said the accused and the others assaulted one Miss Mariam Bala, 20, by stabbing her with “a broken bottle, scissors and knife.”

    Olatunde said Mrs Sanni accused the complainant of having an affair with her husband and that she had had series of abortions for him.

    Olatunde said: “The complainant was sent by her mother to deliver a message to her elder sister who lives in the same house with the accused. When she got there, the accused, who claimed that the complainant was having an affair with her husband locked her in a room and called some hoodlums. They tore Miss Bala’s clothes and stabbed her with knives, bottles and scissors all over her body.”

    According to the prosecutor, the Miss Bala fainted due to the profuse loss of blood.

    “If not for the quick intervention of neighbours who rushed her to the hospital, the complainant would have been dead,” Olatunde said.

    He said in the process of assaulting the complainant, her phone, valued at N20,000 and N30,000 cash which was to be deliver to her sister was stolen from her.

    The offence, Olatunde said contravened Sections 166, 171 and 410 of the Criminal Laws.

    The accused pleaded innocence and was granted N50, 000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    Magistrate Aka Bashorun adjourned the case till September 1.

  • Woman seeks divorce for 18-year-old marriage

    A 39-year-old woman, Bilikisu Adeniran, has prayed the Lagos Island Customary Court in Lagos, to dissolve her 18-year-old marriage to her husband, Musa, for constantly beating her over trivial issues.

    The petitioner said since they have been living as a couple, she never earned her husband’s respect.

    “My husband is very violent and not responsive to our children’s needs. It was when we got married, I learnt his previous wife left him because of his bad character. He returns home late nights and I am tired of complaining. He beats me with koboko whenever he wakes me from sleep,”she said.

    She also said her husband once poured her pot of soup in the toilet because he was against her being a food vendor and that when he eventually got her a job in a filling station, he stopped her from working because they increased the working hours.

    She said: “We fight always. There was even a time he visited a place where they requested for my cloth and my mother’s name in a bid to stop the regular conflict between us. As I speak, I will say things became worse.

    “My husband once got me arrested when we had misunderstanding. It was when the policemen knew I was his wife I was freed. When he tried to lock me up the second time, I left his house.”

    She accused her husband of being fetishistic adding that he has a wardrobe full of charm.

    “I really want an end to this union because I am suffering,” she added.

    Mr Adeniran, 47, in his response said most of the things his wife said were not true, saying he has always been responsible for their children’s school fees.

    The union produced four children between ages six and 17.

    The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, because of the respondent’s unruly attitude in court, gave him a three-hour community service and adjourned the matter till today.

  • 28-year-old woman found dead in Bauchi

    The Bauchi State Police Command yesterday arrested a 30-year-old man, Nasiru Usman Banki and a woman for the alleged death of his girlfriend in Bauchi.

    The command’s spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, told The Nation in Bauchi that the deceased, Ikilima Alhassan, 28, of Bukuru village in Plateau State visited her boyfriend, Banki, who lives at Rafin Makaranta on the Bauchi-Kano Road, behind Awala Hotel, Bauchi at an undisclosed date and time.

    According to police investigation, trouble began when the deceased met Banki in his home with his girlfriend, Fatima Baba Isa, aged 22.

    Haruna said Fatima is a resident of Makera ward in the Bauchi metropolis and is a live-in lover to Banki.

    He said the ladies fought in the apartment, which resulted in Ikilima’s death.

    Haruna added: “On August 9 about 12:50am, a woman was found unconscious on the Maiduguri bypass, near Awalah roundabout, Bauchi by a patrol team.

    “The police team, attached to the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate Division, went to the scene and conveyed her body to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi (ATBU), where she was certified dead.”

    Ikilima’s body has been deposited at the ATBU morgue for post-mortem.

    The police said the deceased’s boyfriend has been arrested and is helping in investigation.

     

     

  • Woman attacks neighbours

    A trader, Funke Morakinyo, who allegedly attacked two of her neighbours with stick, was yesterday arrainged before Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court 22 in Lagos.

    The accused, 47, who lives in  Ojokoro Housing Estate at Meiran, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.

    She denied the charges.

    Prosecuting Police Inspector Edet Okoi said the accused committed the offence on July 23 at Ojokoro.

    According to him, the complainants – Florence Mordi, Gloria mordi and Favour Mordi, all neighbours of the accused – reported the case at the police station.

    “The neighbours came out from their flats to ask Morakinyo to caution her children against disturbing the peace of the neighbourhood. The accused took offence and picked a quarrel with them and a fight ensued. The accused picked up a stick and hit Florence and Gloria on their heads and necks,’’ Okoi said.

    The offences, Okoi noted, contravened Sections 166 (d) and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Chief Magistrate M.O. Osinbajo said the court would be lenient with the accused as a single parent.

    She granted the accused bail in self recognition with one surety who must be a blood relation.

    The case was adjourned to September14.

     

     

  • Woman abandons baby with innocent girl

    A one-year-old physically challenged baby has been abandoned by her mother in the Sango Ota area of Ogun State.

    It was learnt that the mother of the toddler approached an unidentified 10-year-old girl on Ositelu Street, Abebi area of Sango Ota penultimate Friday and told her to help her take care of the baby with a promise to come back for it soon.

    “The mother of the baby told the little girl to hold her child for her under the pretext that she wanted to purchase soft drinks from a nearby depot. She promised to come back for her child but was not seen several hours after she left,” said an eyewitness who craved anonymity.

    The girl with whom the woman abandoned the baby said: “I was just sitting down in front of our house when the woman asked me to look after the baby till she returned from where she wanted to buy some soft drinks.

    “When my mother demanded the identity of the mother of the baby, I told her that it was an unidentified woman that asked me to look after the baby for her till she would return.

    “It later turned out that the woman did not come back for her child, hence my mother was advised to take her to the palace of the Baale of this community, Alhaji Yaya Ajibose, who in turn gave us a letter to take the child to the nearest police station.”

    Our correspondent learnt that the baby has since been taken to a renowned orphanage near the secretariat of Ado-Odo/ Ota Local Government.

  • Woman needs N1m for urgent heart surgery

    A 30-year-old woman has appealed to the public for financial help for an urgent heart surgery.

    Kehinde Soyinka, of New Muta Street, Adiyan near Agbado, Ogun State, developed a heart disease about four years ago.

    The disease usually comes with shortness of breath and heavy pounding of the heart.

    Since she was diagnosed of the disease, she has been attending the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment and medication, which is very costly.

    The mother of three said she has spent more than N300,000 pulled together from her personal savings and donations from family members and associates.

    “My heart problem started about four years ago, when I experienced constant high body temperature and pounding of heart. I fell sick several times and I made frequent visits to private hospitals.

    “At a point, I was taken to Orile Agege General Hospital, where I was asked to run series of tests leading to the discovery of my heart problems.”

    “I was transferred to LASUTH and doctors said the solution is a corrective surgery that will cost N1 million and I have been looking for the money since last year without success.

    “I am a tailor by profession, but my condition has not allowed me to work for about three years now. As I speak, I am still experiencing shortness of breath among other painful symptoms.”

    According to her medical report signed by Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at LASUTH, Bode Falase, “the above named 30-year-old lady was seen in the Cardiothoracic clinic on November 24 and December 3, 2014. She presented with progressive shortness of breath of three years duration. She has been known to have miral valve prolapse.

    “On Transthoracic echocardiogram, she has good systolic function (EF57%) left ventricle and left atrium are dilated (LVD 73mm,LVDs,50mm,Lad 53mm) and there is severe mitral regurgitation (TRmaxPG 10mmHg)”

    “She is in controlled Atrial fibrillation with a pulse rate of 86/min and current medications are Digoxin 0.25 daily, Aldactone 25mg daily and Metoprolol 25mg daily…assessing her, she would be a good candidate for mitral valve repair or replacement. The estimated cost of this surgery in LASUTH will be one million naira.”

    Soyinka , a native of Idoani, Ondo State, said she had no money for the surgery and is kindly asking the general public to make a donation towards her health and well-being.

  • Woman loses N1.5m to suspected fraudsters

    Suspected fraudsters who disguised as passengers have allegedly duped a woman, Omolara Ogunmakin, of the sum of N1.5 million.

    The incident occurred at Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos on June 19, 2015.

    The suspected fraudsters, Vivian Okoro (31), Glory Bassey (29) and Uche Amaechi (29) allegedly tricked and administered unlawful oath on Ogunmakin, to prevent her from revealing what transpired between them to anyone.

    Ogunmakin, it was learnt, had boarded a bus and was joined on the way by the trio who quickly tricked her into paying them the sum of N1.5 million.

    The suspects were however arrested and charged before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on a six count charge of felony, fraudulent trick, administering unlawful oath and obtaining under false pretence.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The police prosecutor, Inspector Uademevbo Moses, told the court that the defendants have committed an act punishable under Sections 35, 36(1), 312, 316, 321 and 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs I.O. Adelaja, admitted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned till August 3 for mention.

  • Woman seeks justice over daughter’s defilement

    A woman whose three years old daughter was defiled by a 30-year old neighbour, Peter Ewanta, has cried out for justice.

    The woman who gave her name as Nkechi Amaechi said the suspect’s family members refused to pay for medical treatment for her daughter.

    Mrs. Nkechi said her daughter has been manifesting several symptoms since she was forcefully defiled.

    The incident occurred at Ewanta Street off New Lagos Road in Benin City.

    In a chat with newsmen, Mrs. Nkechi said the suspect lured her daughter into his room under the pretext of buying biscuit for her and defiled her.

    She said the suspect was a closed door neighbour.

    “I saw my daughter the way she was walking. When I checked, I saw that her vagina as very wide. It was wider than that of a woman that just gave birth.”

    “The man was begging and wanted to fight me. I had to call the police. I don’t have money now to take care of my daughter. I want help from people for proper medical treatment.”

    “My daughter has not been able to pass out excreta since Sunday when the incident occurred. Her stomach is now swelling.”

    Spokesman for the Edo Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwochei, confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been arrested.

  • Ogun market woman leader killed

     

    Tension is mounting in Ijebu – Ode as all markets are closed following the killing of the Iyaloja of Ijebuland, Alhaja Sadia Elewuju, in her Ijebu – Ode home by people suspected to be assassins.

    Alhaja Elewuju was murdered around 3am Thursday when her assailants reportedly invaded her Itorin – Sabo home, Ijebu – Ode, shooting and also matchetting her before disappearing, a source told The Nation.

    The Nation gathered that neighbours and some family members first rushed her to a nearby private hospital situating along the Ijebu – Ode – Ore expressway but later taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital(OOU), Sagamu, where she reportedly died.

    The Police in Ijebu – Ode and detectives from the Igbeba Police Area Command have swunged into action to unravel the circumstances and motives behind her gruesome attack.

    The Nation tried contacting via phone calls, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, for reaction but there was answer from his end when the phone rang.

  • Woman, 50, arrested over laptop, TV ‘theft’

    A 50-year-old woman, Bukola Awolu, has appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly breaking into an apartment and stealing valuables including a laptop valued at N168, 000.

    Awolu, a trader, who resides in Oyo State, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and break-in.

    The Prosecutor, Inspector Feddy Asu, told the court that the offences were committed on Feb. 26 at No. 36, Niger St., off Odaliki Street, Ebute Meta.

    Asu alleged that the woman broke into the apartment of one Mr Rasaki Obafemi and made away with an LG flat screen TV and a laptop all valued at N168, 000.

    He noted that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 305(b).

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate E.O. Ogunkanmi granted the accused N50, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.
