  • Court remands woman for alleged theft of baby

A Karmo Grade I Area Court in Abuja yesterday ordered the remand of Theresa Obonna in prison for alleged theft of an eight-month-old baby.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after Obonna, of Jabi in Abuja, pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of theft.

He adjourned the case till May 3 for hearing.

Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu told the court that Godstime David, who lives in Akwa Ibom State, reported the matter at Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on March 2.

He said the complainant alleged that in January 2017, her lover impregnated her and asked her to abort it, but she refused and relocated to Abuja.

The prosecutor said she stayed with the defendant and after giving birth, the defendant seized the baby and moved to an unknown destination.

Dalhatu said during investigation, the baby was recovered from the defendant.

  • Woman ‘splashes hot water mixed with pepper on husband’

A housewife, Mrs. Janet Mohammed, of Mandela, Minna, Niger State capital, has allegedly poured hot water mixed with pepper on her husband, Mr. Alaska Mohammed, after a brawl.

The victim told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on his hospital bed at Minna General Hospital that the quarrel was about their 11-month-old son’s health.

He said his wife became nonchalant about the boy’s running temperature.

Mohammed said his refusal to allow his wife take their son to church led to a brawl, which was subsequently settled by his mother.

“After my mother reconciled us, she told me that I would regret for laying my hands on her, but I ignored the threat. As I was watching television and taking my breakfast, she splashed the mixture on me,’’ he alleged.

The victim said before relations and neighbours could rescue him, his wife disappeared.

He said the incident had been reported at Tudunwada Police Division.

NAN observed that Mohammed, who spoke in pains, had burns on his face and body and was placed on drip.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said although the issue was between a husband and wife, it was still a criminal case.

“We have begun investigation into the matter, although the woman is on the run. Whenever we arrest her, we will arraign her,’’ he said.

A 37-year-old businesswoman, Joyce Okafor, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding Ike Chukwuebuka, of N550,000, by presenting a forged New Zealand visa to him.

She is facing a four-count charge on alleged conspiracy and fraud.

The suspect allegedly collected N550,000 from Chukwuebuka, promising to procure a valid New Zealand visa for him, the prosecutor, Vincent Atagamen, said.

He told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offences in December at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

“The accused, with others at large, fraudulently collected N550,000 from the complainant, on the pretext of procuring a valid New Zealand visa for him,” Atagamen alleged.

He said the suspect allegedly forged a New Zealand visa, with intent that it might in any way be used or acted upon as genuine.

“The visa was confirmed fake upon verification by the complainant.

“The accused was given another chance to procure the complainant an Australian visa, but when the visa was out, it was also confirmed fake at the airport,” the prosecution alleged.

The offences violate sections 314(3), 362(1)(b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

A 43-year-old housewife, Adeyinka Olaitan, has sought the dissolution of her marriage to Michael Olaitan at Idi-Ogungun Customary Court, Agodi, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The petitioner alleged that the respondent was addicted to cigarettes and alcohol.

She told the court yesterday that her husband of 24 years was a habitual cigarette smoker and a drunk.

Adeyinka alleged that Michael was not a responsible father, as she was left alone to cater for their four children.

She alleged: “My lord, our eldest child gained admission to a tertiary institution, but my husband refused to pay the fees.

“The intervention of my pastor, who implored him to be alive to his responsibility, proved abortive, as he refused to take care of me and our children.”

    The respondent denied the allegations.

He objected to the petitioner’s application for divorce, saying he and his wife should be allowed to settle the matter out of court.

Despite his plea, the President, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage on the grounds that there was no more love between the couple.

He gave custody of three of the four children to the woman and ordered that the respondent should pay N4,000 monthly stipends for the upkeep of the children.

But on realising her mistake,   she raised the alarm. Her shouts of Ole! Ole!! Ole!!! were said to have attracted other road users.

The Nation gathered that other motorists pursued the car, which was forced to stop around the filling station.

The  FRSC team led by  P. Danboyi pounced on the car and its occupants and became suspicious on sighting the injured  woman.

While they were interrogating the men, those chasing the car arrived and reported  that the woman was screaming for help.

Bakare said: “There were three persons in the vehicle, two suspected kidnappers (men) and an expectant woman who was their victim. The woman has sustained body injuries and was rushed to Ola-Oki Hospital, Ibereko for medical attention, where she immediately gave birth to a baby boy’’.

FRSC Corps Marshal Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer,  Bisi Kazeem, hailed the “gallant officers and commended them for their bravery’’.

  • Woman trapped in mud rescued

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) at the weekend rescued a woman who got trapped in the mud by the lagoon near the Third Mainland Bridge.

The latest rescue brought to three, the number of women rescued from the muddy parts of the lagoon this month.

According to a source, the woman, who was seen around 8pm, had three white papers on her hands.

She said the woman appeared to be mentally unstable and was muttering strange words like someone who was doing incantations.

The source said: “I think something strange is happening at that portion of the water. This woman was the third person that LASEMA had rescued from the muddy waters this month. It’s either they are mentally deranged or witches. Her hands were up and she had white papers on it. But her body was submerged in the swamp. When rescue team went for her, the woman suddenly jumped off and started running.

“She hides behind the vehicles the dredgers but the rescuers split into groups and surrounded her. The woman was then taken to Alausa. Then, she was searched and a hospital card was found on her but when the hospital was contacted, it turned out the card belonged to someone else. The card owner said she did not know her. She was surprised to know that her hospital card was found with a total stranger.

“Since the woman did not say anything about her and had no means of identification, she was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for examination.

“But something interesting happened when we got to LASUTH with her. The woman started shouting that the twins must die. She was calling someone’s name and saying the twins have to die. They had to inject her to sleep and I think a psychiatrist will examine her.”

  • Suspected herdsmen attack woman, daughter

    Suspected herdsmen attack woman, daughter

Suspected Fulani herdsmen have attacked a woman and her daughter at Ofumwengbe village in Ovia South West Local Government of Edo State for reporting them to the police.

The woman, Mrs. Patricia Toweh, 52 and her daughter, Hannah, 18, were injured with a machete.

Hannah had a deep cut on her forehead and right hand, while her mother had her left ear cut. She also suffered a deep cut on her forehead.

Narrating her ordeal to reporters, Toweh said they were attacked because she reported the suspected herdsmen to the police after they destroyed her two hectares of cassava.

She said the herdsmen pointed a gun point at her and threatened to shoot her dead, but she grabbed the gun and they used machete to attack her.

The woman said her daughter, who attempted to rescue her, was also attacked.

She recalled that in January, she complained to the leader of the herdsmen at Ofunwengbe,  Alhaji Jubrin that her farm had been destroyed by suspected herdsmen.

This, Toweh said, led to the arrest of herdsmen, who were detained at the Police Divisional Station in Okada, but one of the suspects, Alhaji Yellow, was later released.

Police Commissioner Mr. Babatunde Kokumo, who confirmed the incident, said the command had begun investigation.

He said justice would be done.

  • ‘It’s time to test a woman senator’

‘It’s time to test a woman senator’

An aspirant for next year’s Kogi West senatorial race, Mrs. Doyin Ibikunle, has attributed her decision to contest in 2019 to the bad performance so far by men elected in the past. The business tycoon and philanthropist made the above remark when he spoke to reporters in Kabba, Kogi State, shortly after an empowerment programme for about 300 women in Kabba/Bunu Local Government.

Ibikunle said she decided to run for an elective office, after 15 years of humanitarian service to her community with the sole aim of rescuing her people. She recalled that in the history of Kogi West district, no woman has represented the people at the Senate, pointing out that the time had come for the people to test a woman.

This, she noted, became imperative as a result of the “absence of basic infrastructure and evidences of poverty everywhere”. She expressed her displeasure over the deplorable condition of roads in Okunland, noting that the road constructed by a French construction company during the First Republic, had become impassable.

She admitted that she had no political godfathers or sponsors, but was motivated by her people, especially women. Ibikunle who is contesting on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) said the ruling party had not done badly, after just two years in office.

She said the change mantra was on course and that with more time, the benefits of the hard times being experienced in the country would materialize for the good of the populace.

The aspirant however predicted that beyond party affiliations, elections in 2019 would be won more based on individual popularity.

She said: “There is so much poverty in the community.  Everywhere you go you see poverty written all over the faces of the people. I am in the race for the election to the Senate in 2019 to rescue my people, because the men representing us have not been doing well. No single federal presence worth that name in Kogi West, especially in Okunland. As I am speaking with you, the road that the French construction company, Dumez, gave us in 1960s is the same road my people are plying; it is even worse than when it was first constructed.

“I think the people need a change.  They want to try a woman and I believe I am up to the task. I have accepted the challenge to champion the course of my people.  Moreover, there are places where they have women representing them. In such places, men have not been able to break their good records. So, I want to be like Mama Taraba, I want to be like Binta.”

No fewer than 300 widows in Kabba received some relief items, including food stuff, from her non-governmental organisation, Doyin and Suzan Foundation, with emphasis on empowerment of women, especially widows.

“Women empowerment is critical for the eradication of poverty in the society.

It is estimated that 115 million widows worldwide live in extreme poverty along with their children. Therefore, giving adequate attention to our widows is long overdue, especially the vulnerable ones.

Ibikunle added: “It is my humble belief that this occasion will mark a turning point in the life of our widows and bring succour to them through empowerment and various skills acquisition programmes.”

She said that the foundation had last December distributed relief items, including food stuff worth N12 million, to about 2,000 widows in Yagba Federal Constituency. She promised that the gesture would cut across the seven local government areas in the district.
