    NGOs empower women, children

Two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Help Initiative and Sammy and Kola Foundation (SAAF), have put smiles on the faces of women, vulnerable children and orphans at this year’s “Shop for free”.

The yearly charity and empowerment event, which brought together vulnerable children and orphans from more than five homes in Ibadan, also afforded an opportunity for health, business and social educationists to select women from various parts of the state.

Orphanages at the event were Abundance Ministries, Heritage Homes, Total Parentage Home, Jesus Children Home, Kent Home and Tabitha Homes.

Women were allowed to shop for items, including clothes, shoes, bags, home accessories, domestic items, food and children items, among others for free.

Welcoming the participants, the Director, Help Initiative, Mrs Febisola Okonkwo, said her organisation was synergising with SAAF because they share the same vision to touch the lives of orphans, vulnerable children and women.

She noted that all the items provided for beneficiaries were generated by the organisation’s sponsors and donors.

She described charity and empowerment as collecting and giving back to society.

She said: “To ensure sustainablility and enhance development in line with the United Nations Development Goals which SAAF and Help Initiatives supports, we have come together in synergy to support the following goals: poverty alleviation, zero hunger, good health and well-being, reduced inequalities, quality education, decent work and economic growth.

“We are doing this because we believe in nation building through empowerment and knowledge sharing. Because we know that if you empower a woman and a child, you have empowered the family and the entire nation. Because we believe in team working and synergy. Because we believe if you cannot feed a thousand, feed one and a little drop of water makes a mighty ocean. We are here because we don’t only want to feed with fish, but teach our beneficiaries how to fish as well.

“The donations and gifts we have here are contributions from family, friends corporate bodies in collaboration with Help Initiative and SAA Foundation which says it all. Together, everyone achieves more.”

Highlights of the event include health and business talks for the beneficiaries as well as presentations by the beneficiary homes’ children.

  • THE WOMEN: FAST AND FURIOUS OF A DRAMA

I have seen well-intended get-together of friends turning awry in movies like ‘Family Album’, ‘Truth Hall’, and perhaps, ‘Waiting to Exhale’ – they are all tragicomedies of dirty secrets, causing unprecedented diminishing return at the rise of fun.

Omo (Ufuoma McDermott) must celebrate her 40th birthday, no matter what it takes. Hell is let loose when Teni (Omoni Oboli) discovers her husband is the secret sponsor of her friend’s birthday. Omo, down and fearing no fall, spills the milk of secrets supposedly covered in a delicate calabash, smearing, not just Teni, but Ene (Kate Henshaw) and Rose (Katherine Obiang), who, in Omo’s estimation, are Teni’s accomplices.

Although Blessing Egbe’s ‘The Women’ is one of those stories, it has been able to stand out with ‘dissimilar resemblance’.

‘The Women’ may not claim to be an outright comedy, it does more than an intersperse of comic reliefs, and with considerable good pace, Egbe blows hot and cold in 90 minutes, leaving us on the edge of our seat.

In favour of a director’s creative license, it is safe to say that although Egbe’s familiar style as a TV series producer robs on this movie effort, it is finely garnished by a smart pace that dishes riot and fun in one breathe. More so, this is a golden age in storytelling, and I guess what determines a great production is content, not genre.

Because ‘The Women’, a familiar theme, is intelligently done, it warms its way into us with a refreshing storyline, good acting, smart jokes, and some shameful revelations uncovered at the point of jollification.

During the daring moment that punctured their fun, everybody must go down with Omo, unless there is one without blemish. That is what Teni gets for casting the first stone… how well are the husbands able to handle shocking confessions of covetousness, adultery, child abuse, mental health issues and all- well, we didn’t see the world coming to an end here, yet we didn’t get the impression that Egbe is eulogizing vices.

In ‘The Women’, the filmmaker didn’t just hit us with the tragic element, the buildups make for a progression that prepares the viewer for the bomb, and how you know a good movie is, even when the suspense is not so watertight, you are still stunned by the outcome.

Egbe strikes me as a story teller and gifted director, because ‘The Women’ delivers on a good script, and smart visual interpretation.

If she lost it anywhere, and seemingly so, the fifth lady and model at the getaway event, is a distraction, as her character is to the story, giving us an inkling of a series whose sequel could bud from her scene in the whole drama.

And apart from a few sound glitches too, there is more to take home from ‘The Women’.

It is interesting to note that Femi Branch (Ayo, husband to Rose), who has the tendency to overact, keeps it decent and fitting, even in his vernacular lines. Give it to all the male actors whose roles are not dwarfed by the fire brand ladies: Talk of Kalu Ikeagwu – (Bez, husband to Teni); Gregory Ojefua (Chubby, husband to Ene) and Anthony Monjaro (Maro, husband to Omo).

While indeed all actors are in the lead role, it is safe to say that with the anchor character Omo, Ufuoma McDermott was in her element. The way I have never seen her in any movie…

Mo Abudu makes list of 25 most powerful women in global TV

Founder and CEO of EbonyLife TV, Mo Abudu has been recognised by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ as an influential woman in the media industry.

The media outfit released its annual list of the ‘25 Most Powerful Women in Global Television’ and the Nigerian media personality is the only African who made the cut among others from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia.

The category recognises female executives from around the globe who are rewriting the rules of TV, during a time when ‘women have to work twice as hard for the same recognition’ as men.

The article describes Abudu as a woman who ‘has been at the forefront of media innovation on the continent’ and whose goal for the coming year is ‘to successfully produce Africa’s first sci-fi TV series’. The first time she was included in this list was in 2013, immediately after the launch of EbonyLife TV.

Reacting to the recognition, Abudu said; “It’s an honour and privilege to be acknowledged again by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. I am proud to represent Nigeria and the thousands of women in Africa, striving to make their mark in a male-dominated industry.”

The Hollywood Reporter publishes its list of Most Powerful Women in Global Television annually with luminaries deemed by its editors to have made a significant impact on what audiences are watching worldwide and how women are represented on TV.

EbonyLife TV  is responsible for landmark drama series The Governor, Sons of the Caliphate and Fifty (the series), along with pan-African talk show, Moments.

EbonyLife Films made its debut in 2015 at the 59th BFI London Film Festival with Fifty, the highest-grossing Nollywood movie that year. In 2016, EbonyLife co-produced The Wedding Party, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to become the biggest movie in the history of Nigerian cinema.

  • Agenda for youth and women in governance

SIR: The problem of inequality amongst youth and women in governance can be traced to the poor representation of these groups in leadership positions.  This has created a large number of youth unemployment, poor representation of women and youth issues in policies and lack of gender and social inclusion in decision making process. Neglecting gender based issues has a linkage to casualties suffered by youth, people living with disability and women especially the high incidence of maternal and child mortality.

The role of women and youth has been restricted by political parties to be mere mobilizers and voters.  As a result, there is a large generation of un-tapped resourceful population of youth and women.

During election, the youth plays the role of political thugs, serving the interest of the ruling class.  They are compensated with jobs at the motor parks to work either as bus conductors, taxi or keke Napep drivers, and transport union touts.  The vast majority of unemployed youths can be found at home as willing tool for political, ethnic and religious agitations.  Women are organized into group and given stipends of salt, rice, wrappers and head ties in exchange of their votes.

The not-too-young–to-run bill initiative was proposed to address some of the highlighted issues above; it sought for a constitutional provision to make youth of youthful age run for elective positions.  To support the effort made so far on the bill there is need for youth and women group to begin to mobilize and take active participation in the electoral process. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the total population of Nigeria is 193 million as at 2016 growth figures and the population growth by age from 18 years to 40 years is above 65million. In 2015, INEC recorded 75 million registered voters. Using these figures as a basis, if 65 million Nigerian youths come under an organized platform and vote for their interest during election, they could form the government of Nigeria and change the negative narrative faced by youth, women and the vulnerable group.

A practical way to achieve the above might require forming a youth and women-based political party with sound progressive and developmental ideology that is set out to address issues of social inequality amongst women, youth and the vulnerable group. The political party should create an agenda that will proffer solution to the myriads of problems in Nigeria.  It should have a manifesto that contains an agenda for income distribution, youth employment, sect oral growth, creativity and innovation, poverty eradication, economy and job creation, improving maternal and child mortality, industrialization, palliatives for the aged,  technology, entertainment and sports, improving the plights of the disabled and physically challenge. The agendas shall be structured in line with best global practice that can compete with developed economies in the world.

Such a party must make use of its first eleven as representatives in all elective positions. The positions should reflect equal representation of women, youth, and people living with disability.  Proven competence and reflection of federal character should form basis for the selection of candidates for any of the elective post.  Above all, the structure for internal party democracy, accountability, transparency and discipline should be the hallmark of the party.

While we respectfully recognize the role our fathers and mothers who currently occupy elective offices have played in Nigeria, there is need for them to handover willingly to the youth and young women who are the real nation builders.  This might be an impossible task to ask for, but it will become possible if the youth organize themselves and get it through the ballot boxes.

APC women endorse El-Rufai for 2019

National, zonal and state women leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders yesterday met in Kaduna and supported Governor Nasir El-Rufai ahead of 2019 general election.

The women, who met at Arewa House, Kaduna, were in the city to deliberate on how to put some of them into political space before 2019, in order to have a good representation.

Leader of the stakeholders, Hajia Binta Mua’zu, said to achieve this they sought and secured the support of the governor for the meeting, hence the early preparation to see how to fit-in, in men-dominated environment, especially in the North.

The governor’s wife, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, who was impressed with the large turnout of women, told the gathering that her husband would support women’s cause because without them, he would not have emerged as the governor.

She said the best thing to do was to support her husband so he could move the change mantra beyond 2019, to enable women have the opportunity of fulfilling their ambitions.

The facilitator and Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Hafsat Mohammed Baba, said there was no better time to mobilise women and reawake them, especially those with political ambition, than now.

According to her, “we are here today to see how the women leaders and followers can come together and chart a way forward as regards the political sphere of our state. We need to be well represented so that our yearnings and aspirations for improved social well-being of our children can be well channelled.

  • Anglican Women Guild backs restructuring

The Women Organisation of the Diocese of Lagos West Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has thrown its weights behind calls for restructuring of the nation.

It called on the ruling class to restructure the nation in a way that will give room for equitable distribution of national resources and political power among the diverse geo-political formations and social strata.

President of the organisation, Mrs. Lydia Odedeji, lamented the nation has been struggling to exist as a nation years after amalgamation and independence.

She spoke at the 18th annual women’s conference at the weekend.

Speaking on the conference theme, “One thing is needful,’ Odedeji, said: “Hundred years after amalgamation, our existence as a nation still lacks the essential ingredients of nationhood which should ultimately manifest in unity.”

According to her, the unrelenting agitation for political formation restructuring across a wide spectrum of social strata and geo-political formations testifies eloquently to the need for review of the subject of Nigerian nationhood through political restructuring.

The wife of the Bishop of the Diocese, The Rt Rev Dr. James Olusola Odedeji, emphasised that political restructuring decisions based on wide consultation and all-inclusive approach will guarantee Nigeria’s much needed peaceful coexistence.

“All these killer groups suddenly emerged with unthinkable audacity, at least publicly, just about the time we were heaving a sigh of relief from senseless killing of women and children by Boko Haram Terrorists who even mindlessly use innocent  children for suicide bombing,” she said.

She pleaded with the government to effectively deplore and reinforce existing legal instruments and policies that seek the protection of this vulnerable class of citizens.

Mrs. Odedeji called on all womenfolk to take charge of their naturally divine role both at home and in the society.

“Women are naturally disposed, by divine purpose and plan, to be of great and primal influence to her immediate family members who, of course, aggregate the larger society.”

According to her, this divine configuration comes with divine expectation, “God wants us to be an agent of positive change to our immediate community and the world at large.”

Patron of the Women’s Guild and Bishop of Lagos West Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. James Odedeji, said people need to avoid a life filled with distractive activities and figure out what is most needful and determine to go after it.

He argued involvement in many activities does not necessarily result in accomplishments but mostly mere distractions.

  • Many women cause domestic violence by actions — Lagos Commissioner

Many women cause domestic violence by actions — Lagos Commissioner

Dr Lola Akande, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), on Thursday said that many women, by their actions, are the cause of the rate of domestic violence in Nigeria.

Akande, who was represented by Mrs Olushola Falana, Director, Women Development Department, WAPA, made the observation at a programme on Management of Domestic Violence, organised by the ministry in Lagos.

According to her, negligence, sophistication, misguided utterances, infidelity, use of abusive words and gullibility on the part of the women, are factors that drive domestic violence.

“It is no longer news that many women have lost their lives through domestic violence.

“The more we try to put the blame on the men folk, the more we will continue to turn blind eyes to the fact that many women are the cause of the domestic violence we see today.

“This is because we fail to understand some important aspects of how most men are wired.

“Some women also cause violence by using abusive words and misguided utterances that can provoke the men.

“But let me also state that a man who beats a woman is a beast, and does not deserve to live with humans.

“No matter how provoked you may be as a man, please, never raise your hand to beat your wife, ” she said.

The commissioner advised men and women to be understanding, tolerant and communicate more, to prevent violence in marriages.

Akande said the programme was organised due to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s commitment to exploring all avenues to nip the scourge of domestic violence in the bud, and reduce it.

Earlier, Mr Praise Fowowe, Principal Consultant, Centre for Sex Education and Family Life, said that communication and dialogue should be explored to resolve family issues, rather than resorting to violence

Fowowe said that dialogue could prevent needless deaths from domestic violence as well as promote the dignity of humanity, where there would be respect for life.

“I commend the Lagos State Government for this sensitisation programme because awareness is key to making individuals who have temper issues to learn how to call for help and go for therapy.

“Men should desist from beating their wives, but see them as co-creators, help mate and friends, so, we can build a team-centred family, society and country, and create the nation of our dream, ” Fowowe said.

Also speaking, Mrs Oluwabukola Salami, Director, Lagos State Office of Public Defender, urged women to get empowered so as not to be liabilities to the men.

According to her, it will be difficult for any man to beat his wife when she is empowered and contributes meaningfully in the home.

Salami urged women who were in abusive marriages to report to appropriate agencies to get help and safeguard their lives.

She urged the public to be their brothers’ keeper, and report any form of domestic violence in their neighborhood. (NAN)

  • “Women Laughed at me because of my small manhood and quick release in 40seconds” says 45-Year Old Banker

“Women Laughed at me because of my small manhood and quick release in 40seconds” says 45-Year Old Banker

My name is Dave Taidi, and I will be sincere with you some months back, my marriage almost crashed and became a sexless marriage…

all because of my inability to perform during sex like a real man

Let me tell you what really happened:

My wife and I have been happily married for about some years ago, but our sex life was disappointing.

The major reason was due to the problem of releasing too quick during sex.

Sometimes within 40seconds of penetrating my wife’s vagina, I would look down and see that I am already releasing my sperm all over her.

During foreplay with my wife like caressing her, or kissing her… I would notice that suddenly I have poured out my semen.

But you know the worse part?

Several times before sex, I was unable to get an erection that could last even 1 minute. And my manhood would just fall and be unable to rise again.

It was embarrassing and shameful thing to behold because sex with my wife was so boring and always ended within 2minutes.

At first, my wife was very supportive so I started trying several drugs from pharmacy, using sprays and depressants… just so I could get an erection or even last say 5minutes during sex, but it all came to nothing.

    My condition became much terrible.

At a point, I thought that this condition was spiritual, I contacted my pastor and I started praying and fasting but no changes in my body system… so I gave up on that.
The breakthrough finally came when I ran into one of my ex-girlfriend that we were very close during my university days.

During one of our encounters, she dropped the bombshell. She jokingly asked me…

‘Are you now a strong man on bed or you still release even
    before the show starts?”

I was embarrassed from her question.

But from the look on my face, she already knew that I was still suffering from the problem.

I explained my story to her that my condition was still the same thing and how it was almost tearing my marriage apart.

My ex-girlfriend almost moved to tears and told me that my poor sexual performance in bed was the main reason why she broke up with me and told me to move on because she could not stand it anymore.

But surprisingly instead of mocking me like she used to do, she gave me the contact of a men health specialist that helped her fiancée to cure him of the same sex related problem I was experiencing.

My Ex-girlfriends Laughed at Me Because of my tiny manhood and lasting just 40seconds. After Taking This Supplement, I Now Last Over 25minutes And My Wife Begs Me to Release During Sex, Click Here To See The Solution That Worked For Me!

At first, I was skeptical and later on talked with my wife and we decided to try the men health specialist.

The Men health specialist gave me a natural supplement (NAFDAC approved) that contains 50 capsules, to be used twice daily as a curative measure for my quick ejaculation and weak erection issues.

Truth be told, on the 5th day of using the herbal supplement, I noticed that my erections became stronger and harder in the morning when I woke up.

Before, I used to wake up and my manhood would just be like that without any erection… like a dead manhood.

But that day, it was different. I had much stronger
erection without any stress at all.

I continued using the capsules for 3more days. My wife and I decided to have sex, and I did not release the normal time before of less than 1minute.

Instead, we made love and had sex for good 15minutes before I released my sperm.

But even with that, my sexual stamina all through was so much and my wife was unable to stand up immediately after the sex.

My wife was overjoyed and she confessed that I have
never handled her that way in bed ever
    since we got married.

She praised me that during the sex, I performed like a strong, young guy in his early twenties.

I was still in much doubt, so I decided to give the same capsules to my very close friend that was complaining about his quick release issue and watery sperm.

After 7days, he too came back again that his condition has improved and he was lasting 20minutes plus in bed with a much stronger erections.

It’s the main reason why both married and unmarried women cheat on men. Sadly, it also leads to broken marriages.

  • N1.6b women fund is idle, says minister

The Federal Government has urged states to access the N1.6 billion National Women Empowerment Fund (NAWEF) lying idle in the Bank of Industry (BoI).

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Sen Jummai Alhassan, made the plea yesterday during a one day sensitisation programme for wives of governors, wives of Local government area chairmen, women on elective positions on the effective implementation the fund.

The minister noted that despite the various intervention to make the funds accessible, states are finding it difficult to access the funds by meeting all the terms of conditions especially the repayment of the loans.

She explained that the Federal Government had decided to implement the fund in eight pilot states, which she said include, Abia (Southeast), Awka Ibom (Southsouth), Osun (Southwest) and Nassarawa (Northcentral).

Others are Jigawa (Northwest), Adamawa, Yobe and Borno (Northeast).

“Unfortunately all together we have got only 25,740 application from all the eight pilot states, when actually we expect 80000 from all the states.

”The overall objective of the NAWEF programme is to provide access to financial services for women involved in micro and small scale enterprises to scale up their businesses.

“The programme is also a revolving loan facility that is interest and collateral free requiring beneficiaries to repay within a specified period of six months or more depending on the kind of enterprise or business to enable other benefit from the scheme.”

The minister said to sustain the fund, certain conditions have been put in place. These are women guaranteeing each other as members of same cooperative group; women ensuring commitment to repayment as scheduled while less stringent conditions to access the fund to make repayment easy for beneficiaries.

  • 500 Abia PDP women defect to APGA

Women numbering over 500 in Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Abia State have defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The PDP women under the aegis of Amalgamated Abia Women led by their leader Madam Peace Uwalaka said they decided to dump the ruling party in the state because of what she described as the inability of the incumbent administration in the state to fulfil its promises to the people of the state.

Uwalaka who recalled how past elected representatives of Aba North and South federal constituency had failed the electorate, hailed House of Representatives lawmaker, Hon. Ossy Prestige for quality representation in less than three years of being in the House.

The group members who vowed to assist and support the lawmaker in any way that they can to improve the lives of the constituents, urged the lawmaker to continue in his good works.

In his response, Prestige thanked the women for identifying with his service to the people and promised not to rest on his oars until Aba is fixed.

He also told the women that their solidarity would encourage him to do more.
