W/cup: Be ready for a fight Amuneke warns Eagles

Newly appointed Al Khartoum Watani of Sudan manager, Emmanuel Amuneke has warned the Super Eagles to be ready for a “fight” as he declared Nigeria’s group for the 2018 FIFA World Cup as “tough.”

The Super Eagles were drawn in Group D alongside familiar foe Argentina, Croatia and debutants Iceland.

“It’s a very tough draw for the Eagles,” Amuneke spoke exclusively to The Nation.

“Iceland, we’ve all witnessed their progression and how they performed brilliantly at the Euros.

Croatia is a very good side. Argentina is strong – of course we beat them in a friendly recently but we shouldn’t duel on that because these teams will complete and fight you all day and we must be ready.

He continues: If we want to win the World Cup like some of us have been saying then we need to play and beat any team that comes our way.”

Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo also reacted to the draw submitting that Iceland are “no pushovers”

Ighalo highlighted the strength of debutants Iceland but remains confident in the chances of the Super Eagles.

“It’s a big game and in the world cup. So, they are no pushovers because you saw the Euros and what they did. The better team will always come out tops and I’m confident in our team,” Ighalo told Supersport when asked about playing against the first-timers.

Ighalo finished as top scorers for his Chinese club, Changchun Yatai with 15goals.

Three-time African Champions, Nigeria will face Argentina for the fifth time in six World Cup appearances and the Europeans for the first time.

Meanwhile Nigeria may engage England in an international friendly to prepare the Super Eagles for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 2nd Vice President and member of FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee,  Shehu Dikko and Nigeria football legend, Austin Okocha were sited discussing with The Three Lions manager, Gareth Southgate immediately  after the draw on Friday night in Moscow.

Before the draw, there were claims in some section of the media that the England FA had reached out to the NFF for a Grade A friendly with the Eagles but only if both teams were not drawn in the same group.

Nigeria met England at the 2012 FIFA World Cup and the game ended goalless.

W/Cup: Don’t expect profit analysts tell Russia

Russia economy is not likely to benefit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, despite huge government spending, financial analysts have hinted .  Draws for the Mundial which will see 32 countries battle for honours and the multi billion dollars largesse that goes with it, was done Friday  with the host nation expected to flag off action on June 14.

Russia is expected to spend $13.2 billion on the tournament, in what will be the costliest football competition in history.

Analysts surveyed by the RBC business portal on Friday forecast a short-term economic bump resulting from temporary jobs and an influx of spending during the contest.

Economic analyst Sergei Drobyshevsky told RBC that Russia’s GDP would increase by around 0.2 percent from April to September 2018. Hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, he said, will receive most of the profits, due to higher prices and an increased demand for consumer goods and services.

Football fans will add around $3 billion to the Russian economy during the World Cup, Drobyshevsky added.

However, the World Cup effect will dissipate almost immediately after the final match, economic expert Dmitry Kulikov was cited as saying by RBC.

“All else being equal, the expected effect [of the tournament] on economic growth in [2018] will be equivalent to that of a statistical error,” Kulikov said.

Host nation Russia begin their campaign against Saudi Arabia in the opening match on June 14 in Moscow Luzhniki, Moscow. The second match will see them tackle Egypt June 19 in St Petersburg while the last group match will be against Uruguay June 25 in Samara.

Despite the worry over economic implication for the host country, participating countries stand a chance of carting away the chunk of money placed on the table by the World soccer ruling body FIFA.

FIFA has announced the 2018 FIFA World Cup prize money pool where they have allocated record $791 million for prize money, payments to clubs and player insurance fee. $400 million will be purely awarded to 32 national federations according to how they finish in the tournament with the eventual champion expected to cart away $38 million.

  • World Cup Draws: Super Eagles to face real Argentina squad — Disu

World Cup Draws: Super Eagles to face real Argentina squad — Disu

Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Tunde Disu, says the Super Eagles should be ready to face the real Albiceleste of Argentina at the World Cup.

Disu gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos on the draws made on Friday that pit Nigeria in Group D alongside, Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

NAN reports that the World Cup draws held in Russia, Nigeria is in the group alongside Argentina who they had faced four times before in the World Cup in 1994, 2002, 2010 and 2014.

The only time Nigeria avoided Argentina in the World Cup was in 1998 in France. It will however be the fifth time Nigeria will be facing the Albiceleste opposition at the grand football fiesta.

According to the draws, Nigeria will play first against Croatia in the first ever senior international match, while the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, Iceland will play against Nigeria also in Group D.

The Icelanders, the only newcomers, will play two-time winners Argentina in their first World Cup finals match. The Eagles last group match will be against Argentina who have turned their World Cup nemesis.

On Argentina’s opposition, Disu said that though Argentina was becoming a familiar foe, yet Nigeria should not start counting their teeth with their tongues.

“Nigeria should be ready to face the real Argentina opposition, it is true we beat them at the friendlies, but this is a World Cup with a different ball game. “The fact that we beat them would have put some element of revenge in them because they won’t want a repeat of that at the Mundial.

“Argentina are highly technical team with which they would have welcome their talisman, Messi. What will be on their head now is that who tops the group. “Argentina can be beatable, but how ready we are will go a long way in resolving that because we cannot really judge them with the friendly we played against them,’’ he said.

Disu said that the first game at the World Cup would count a lot if the Eagles would progress from the group stage. “We must take our first match seriously, it is the only match that can give us an edge in the campaign. It is quite important.

“Others in the group should be taken seriously too, there is no easy group in a World Cup, and they all merited their place. “Playing against Argentina, we should also avoid dead ball situation which can be fatal, the Argentine team are very good at the dead ball situation,’’ he said.

In the vein, Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Lagos Chapel, Fred Edoreh, said that there was no easy team in the World Cup. “The thing with football now is that you cannot see a group now and say it is an easy group. Argentina we know, but the East European teams can also be dangerous.

“European teams play some very strong tactical football they have a lot of stamina and they can be crafty. “It does not matter who is in the group now, our determination and inspiration will go a long way to see us through the group stage.

The players need determination and maturity. “Also, it also depends on the plans of the football house if they are serious with this campaign and how they will get the players ready,’’ he said. NAN also reports that in 1994, Nigeria was pitted against Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece.

The opening match was against Bulgaria which the Super Eagles won 3-0 with late Rashidi Yekini scoring the country’s first ever World Cup goal. They topped the group in spite of losing 1-0 to Argentina because they also beat Greece 2-0 to garner six points.

In 1998, they were drawn again against Bulgaria, Spain and Paraguay, winning two matches, 3-2 against Spain, 1-0 against Bulgaria and lost 1-3 to Paraguay. They however, lost woefully in the round of 16, 1-4 to Paraguay. In 2002, the Eagles were for the second time drawn against Argentina who beat them 1-0, they lost to Sweden 1-2 and drew 0-0 against England.

They failed to go beyond the group stage like it happened in 2010 in South Africa where they got their third pairing with Argentina alongside South Korean and Greece. They lost 0-1 to Argentina, 1-2 to Greece and drew 2-2 with South Korea. The experience in the 2014 edition in Brazil was like 1994 and 1998 where they were able to get out of the group but failed to go beyond the round of 16.

That year they were drawn again against Argentina, the fourth time in the World Cup, Bosnia Herzegovina and Iran. They lost 2-3 to Argentina, drew 0-0 with Iran and beat Bosnia Herzegovina 1-0 to move into the round of 16. Following the protest on match bonuses, the team lost concentration in the round of 16 and lost to France 0-2. (NAN)

Eagles will face Argentina on the 26th of June as the last match after playing Croatia and Iceland in the first and second matches . Nigerian international Odion Ighalo described the group as tough but not one in which Nigeria cannot emerge to progress.  It is a world cup draw and no team is cheap but I think this is a fair group and I think we can emerge from this group” he enthused

  • W/Cup Draw: Who is afraid of facing past winners?

W/Cup Draw: Who is afraid of facing past winners?

With barely 48 hours to the much awaited World Cup draw billed for the Kremlin in Russia, the feeling across the globe especially within the countries that qualified for the Mundial is that of anxiety.  It is like waiting in front of the labour room awaiting the delivery of a child after nine months of gestation. The qualifiers has separated the men from the boys and the 32 countries that survived the qualifiers are about to know their group opponents that will determine to a great extent how far they can go in the month long battle of supremacy.

In Nigeria the feeling among soccer fans and analysts alike is a mixture of fear, anxiety, optimism and pessimism with a strong desire to be patriotic no matter the feeling.

The flourish with which the Super Eagles qualified for the Russia 2018 has given many a lot of confidence that the Gernot Rohr tutored side can go all the way to spring a surprise in Russia. Again a recent report published by Bleacher claims that Nigeria is taking the youngest team to the Russia with average age of the team put at 24.9, beating Germany, who are second with 25.7.

The National team under Rohr has seen the infusion of younger players like Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Francis Uzoho, Ola Aina, Tyrone Ebuehi and Brain Idowu among others. If the report is true, then it means the team should boast of speed and stamina, and with experience the likes of captain John Obi Mikel and the older players will bring to the table should be able to hold their own against any team. Qualification for the World cup is not a mean feat and is an indication that the team that so emerged is ready to prove itself among the bests.

The big question is why the fear in some quarters over the draw and the possibility of facing the likes of Germany, Argentina, Brazil, France, Uruguay, Spain, England and Italy? Perhaps one of the reasons aside from their legion of stars is the fact that they are the only winners of the world cup since its inception in 1930. Interestingly for the first time Italy who won the title in 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006 will be missing having failed to qualify, but the remaining seven past winners Brazil, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France and Uruguay made it to Russia and all eyes will be on them in their attempt to re-enact the achievement they made in the past. Granted they have the experience garnered over the years but it is also safe to say that the rest of the world has not been sleeping as upsets are no longer strange in football.

Qualifying for world cup final is open announcement that such a team is ready to compete for honours among the bests. At every new edition of the world cup, what has been achieved in the past remains in the past but remains relevant to history. Every edition provides an opportunity for a past winner to prove it has what it takes to retain or reclaim the title and also an opportunity for a fresh winner to emerge. In the final analysis qualification for the world cup is an open declaration that a team is ready to fight for honours the pedigree of the opponents notwithstanding.

The Eagles landed in Russia with panache and the job must have to be done. Come Friday, the opponents will emerge and no matter their pedigree, the Eagles must not panic but fight to the finish.

Russia 2018:  Menu booklets for launch before kickoff

Fans to the world cup in Russia will be handed a menu booklet at the venues to enable them know where to get special delicacies.

The Booklets on local food specialties and restaurant recommendations will appear in the 2018 World Cup host cities before the tournament kicks off, the state-run TASS news agency has reported.

The guides, which are part of the broader “Gastronomic Map of Russia” project, are meant to steer football fans in their gastronomic forays and identify spots where they can get football-themed delicacies.

For example, the bread making factory in Samara has proposed producing special pastries in the shape of footballs, which would be sold along the path to the local stadium when it hosts World Cup matches next summer.

Restaurants in Sochi, on the other hand, will be featured in the booklets through their dishes that reflect regional tastes.

The Krasnodar region, which Sochi is a part of, presented its gastronomic map on Friday at the Sochi International Forum for Tourism. Its menu includes Kuban wines, cheeses, shashlik and a local variation of borsch.

The booklets will be published for World Cup host cities as well as cities with links to the international tournament, such as Vladimir, which is being promoted as a cultural tourism hotspot for visiting football fans.

Michael Owen shines in horse racing debut

Michael Owen finished a creditable second on his race-riding debut at Ascot and refused to rule out having a second shot at riding in a charity race as he was watched on by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The ex-England striker also said the attention he had attracted for his first jockey experience had been similar to when he played in the World Cup.

On the track where Brown Panther, the horse he bred and owned, gave him one of his most treasured wins with success at the 2011 royal meeting, Owen briefly looked like winning as Tom Dascombe-trained Calder Prince hit the front on the home bend.

But ultimately, Owen and his mount were beaten two and a quarter lengths in the Prince’s Charity Fund Countryside race by Golden Wedding, ridden by Tom Chatfield-Roberts.

In contrast to Owen, who only sat on his first racehorse five months ago, Chatfield-Roberts has ridden over 20 point-to-point winners.

Owen, who was accompanied down to the start by a pony in order for his mount to remain settled, said: ‘My fella has run over a mile so coming around the final bend I thought he would stay on. But he has probably never carried the weight he carried today!!

‘I was really surprised how quick it went early on. I don’t know what it looked like to the naked eye but it felt like a rate of knots.

‘It was such good fun. It felt like I was half duelling up the straight and then he just pulled away from me.

‘I knew everyone was keeping an eye to see whether I fell off or did something wrong. I am no expert and have a lot of polishing up to do if I want to get any good but the plan was just to get round safely.

‘Leg strength is one thing I would say I had but this is a totally different way of using your strength. I was just out-pushed at the end.’

Owen, who has raised over £10,000 for his charities, said he had received good luck message from Sir Anthony McCoy, Frankie Dettori, Barry Geraghty and Ruby Walsh as well as a host of his friends from the footballing world.

  • Chinese league will be tough for foreign players next season – Ideye

Chinese league will be tough for foreign players next season – Ideye

The Chinese Super League has been the new pasture for many world and Nigerian football stars but Tianjin Teda of China and Super Eagles’ striker, Brown Ideye revealed that foreign players will find the league very difficult as the local players were now upping their play.

The former junior international, who had been reported to have been in disagreement with management of Tianjin Teda said this on Tuesday in an interview on Sports Café.

He also confirmed that he would be plying his trade away from the Chinese League next season.

“I don’t think I will be playing football in China next season maybe Europe,” Ideye said.

“The Chinese owners are doing their best, they are bringing more big names to the league.

“Month by month it is really tight because most of the Chinese players are picking very fast. From next season, it’ll be a big task on the foreign players.”

Ideye also discarded talks that he alongside Super Eagles captain – John Mikel Obi and other big stars joined the Chinese Super League because of the money.

According to him, football was the reason he moved to China and he alongside the big names in the league were being rewarded based on their input to the league.

On what took him to China, Ideye, said: “It is football. I’m not the only one playing there, Mikel too is playing and some other big names like Pato and Tevez.

“They too have the same aim which is going to China and play football and enjoy every moment on the pitch.

“People think it is that good but you have to work for it (money); nothing good comes easy. You work for it and get your reward.”

The 29-year-old former Olympiakos player, who has been out of the Super eagles squad for over a year also added that he was looking forward to be part of the players that would represent Nigeria at the World Cup.

He added, “I’m looking forward to Russia just like every other player looking forward to the World Cup and hoping to do their best.”
