FIFA U-17: India gives away 27,000 tickets

India has given away 27,000 tickets to the opening games of the FIFA U-17 World Cup to fill empty stands, an official said Friday, in a desperate bid to avoid an embarrassing repeat of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The under-17 World Cup, which kicks off on Friday, marks India’s first attempt at hosting a FIFA tournament, but sales for the high-profile event have been poor, despite some seats costing less than a dollar.

Organisers are now scrambling to ensure that the 56,000-capacity Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi appears packed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the opening games which will see India play the United States.

“We have given away 27,000 tickets to schools around the Delhi region and will also provide pick and drop facility. It will be embarrassing for us if the stadium looks empty,” an organising committee member told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The event, which runs until October 28, has been dogged by bad news, with Greenpeace issuing a report Wednesday that said the poor quality of air in India’s pollution-clogged cities poses a “serious health risk” to players and spectators during the tournament.

Twenty-four nations are competing in the event, which is being held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata.

Greenpeace said all the six cities “share dangerous levels of air pollution” but singled out New Delhi as the venue with the highest risk.

“Air pollution levels during the Indian tournament could be significantly worse than during the 2008 Beijing Olympics,” the report warned.

India’s capital will host its last game of the tournament on October 16, just before pollution levels spike around the Diwali festival, when Hindus celebrate by setting off huge amounts of fireworks.

Media reports said matches were deliberately kept out of Delhi after October 16 because of pollution fears.

India’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to take precautions ahead of the festival, and measures under consideration include pulling some cars off roads and closing polluting industries.

World Cup organisers did not comment on the Greenpeace report.

The event is among India’s highest-profile global tournaments after the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 which were meant to showcase the country’s status as an emerging power but instead left memories of shoddy venues, empty stadiums and massive budget overruns.

Leagues on hold as players head for WC qualifiers

The Leagues will be at rest this weekend as players bid their clubs temporary good bye to answer to national calls in search for qualifications for the 2018 World cup in Russia.

By Sunday, some countries would have sealed their qualification while some others would either be making slim chances of qualification and others counting their loses.

Thus, it is not about the clubs this weekend it is about the National teams.

Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel leads the Super Eagles against visiting Chipolopolo of Zambia in Uyo.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to lead Portugal to the 2018 World Cup in Russia — and the Real Madrid talisman appeared in relaxed mood during training on Tuesday.

Even after seven straight wins — and an expected eighth at Andorra on Saturday, European champions Portugal are not guaranteed to be at the World Cup.

Ronaldo and Co go into the weekend fixture three points behind Group B leaders Switzerland, who they face in a mouthwatering fixture next week.

And the former Manchester United superstar was among the players pictured in training at their base near Lisbon before they travel to Andorra for their clash.

Off to Spain, Gerard Pique put the hostility of Monday’s open training session with Spain behind him as Julen Lopetegui’s men continued their preparations on Tuesday.

The Barcelona defender was jeered and taunted by fans at Las Rozas complex in Madrid for being a vocal supporter of Catalonia’s referendum on independence.

Pique was subjected to chants of ‘Pique carbon, Espana es tu nacion’, which translates as ‘Pique b*****d Spain is your nation’, by some of the 1,500-strong crowd.

But during Tuesday’s behind-closed-doors session, the former Manchester United man looked relaxed and happy as he trained alongside the rest of the squad.

Pique was pictured smiling and laughing as Spain gear-up for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Albania. A win will all but ensure they reach Russia next year.

In Spain’s recent qualifier against Italy at the Santiago Bernabeu, Pique was applauded and whistled in equal measure but that was not the case on Monday.

W/Cup : HRW battle Qatar over heat related deaths

Human Rights Watch (HWR) have demanded explanation from 2022 world Cup hosts Qatar, following reports that scorching temperatures may have caused the death of some workers at some of the venues.

The New York based organisation demanded that investigation be conducted into workers deaths and findings made public.  It further noted that such information was last provided in 2012 even as world cup organisers reported that there had been 10 deaths between October 2015 and July 2017, with eight classified as “non-work related”.

In the figures made available in 2012 according to NRW, Out of the 520 deaths then for workers from Bangladesh, India and Nepal, 385, or 74 percent, were “neither explained nor investigated.

“The Qatari authorities’ failure to put in place the most basic protection from the heat, their decision to ignore recommendations that they investigate worker deaths, and their refusal to release data on these deaths, constitutes a willful abdication of responsibility,” said report author Nicholas McGeehan.

Qatar has introduced laws to stop people working outside between 11:30 am and 3:00 pm annually from June 15 to August 31, when temperatures can reach around 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

But HRW says these measures do not go far enough.

Temperatures in Qatar are currently in the high 30s Celsius and humidity levels are above 50 percent. `

The HRW says medical research suggests heat stress is a genuine risk to those working outside, and it has called for greater flexibility by Qatari authorities.

About 800,000 migrant constructions workers are engaged in various sites ahead of the 2022 world cup to be hosted by Qatar after the 2018 edition to be hosted by Russia.

48,000 capacity Khalifa International Stadium in Doha is one of the venues refurbished ahead of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Stadium which is currently the ground of Qatar national football team, will host the 17th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in autumn 2019.

  • Cameroon clash: Ebonyi fans give praises, knocks to Super Eagles list

Cameroon clash: Ebonyi fans give praises, knocks to Super Eagles list

Some soccer fans in Ebonyi have expressed mixed feelings over the calibre of players invited by Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr for the World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rohr invited 23 players to camp for the encounter billed for Uyo on Sept. 1 and Yaounde on Sept.4.

The list consists of 22 foreign based players and one home-based player. He also placed on standby seven players made of four foreign-based and three home-based players.

The fans told NAN that retaining the entire team that fell to South Africa in an AFCON 2019 qualifier in June was suicidal while others reasoned otherwise.

Bright Ibe, former Chairman of the Nigerian Referees Association (NRA), Ebonyi Chapter, said that Rohr would have invited players with requisite experience for the clash considering Cameroon’s pedigree.

“Players such as Godfrey Obaobona, Efe Ambrose, Nnamdi Oduamadi, among others, should have been invited to avoid the lethargic performance of the youngsters paraded against South Africa.

“Cameroon as African champions are buoyed by its FIFA Confederation Cup escapade and can only be dismantled by an experienced side,” he said.

Benson Imagwe, defunct Ebonyi Angels Goalkeeper, faulted the retention of Daniel Akpeyi in the team after a poor display against South Africa.

“Fans are still nursing the pains caused them by Akpeyi’s performance against South Africa. His matter is worsened by his loss of first-team place in his South African club, Chippa United.

“Rohr should have invited the CHAN team and Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye for the clash,” he said.

Princewill Udoh, a lecturer, also faulted the retention of some players, especially in the defence.

He said that the defence might be an “easy pie” for the rampaging Cameroonian strikers.

“Chidozie Awaziem and Elderson Echiejile outing against South Africa was poor and the matter is worsened by the absence of another natural left-full back to cover Echiejile.

“Rohr is only left with the option of fielding untested players such as Mikel, Agu, Ola Aina, among others; the situation is dicey,” he said.

Chief Sebastine Elem, a retired public servant, however, said that the coach was right to select the players because the time was too short for changes in the team.

“The Eagles would have less than one week to train before the match and it will be difficult for Rohr to field players that are new to him.

“He wants to give the players an opportunity to correct the South African poor showing but we would have wished for a lesser opposition than Cameroon,” he said.

Judith Odoh, a female musician and soccer enthusiast, noted that the return of players such as Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi, among others, would definitely strengthen the team.

“Soccer fans should support the team because the team even if deficient cannot be changed overnight,” she said.

Josh Onomah joins Aston Villa on loan

Nigeria born England U-21 ace Joshua Oghenetega Peter Onomah has signed a new four-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur and joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old midfielder has made 32 appearances for Spurs, most of them as a substitute, and was part of the England team that won the U20 World Cup this summer.

He made 12 senior appearances for Spurs in 2016-17, including a Champions League debut at Bayer Leverkusen last October.

Onomah told avfc.co.uk: ‘I can’t wait to get started.

‘This is a huge football club and I want to really make my mark here and prove to be a player the manager can rely on. I know that promotion is the aim and I am here to help us achieve that.’

Onomah is eligible to make his Villa debut in their opening Championship match of the season against Hull on Saturday.

The youngster has often been used as an attacking midfielder during his Spurs cameos, but he sees himself as more of a box-to-box player.
