    FIFA approves 48-team World Cup

FIFA has voted unanimously to expand the World Cup to a 48-team tournament in 2026.
The new format, which will see the finals comprising 16 groups of three teams before a 32-team knockout stage, was voted for unanimously by the FIFA Council at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.
President Gianni Infantino had laid out plans for such an expansion as part of his campaign for the top job at world football’s governing body last year.
The 37 Council members were asked to select their favourite from five proposals: two involving a 48-team set-up, two 40-team tournaments, and the current 32-team format.
Infantino’s proposal had won backing from a number of officials, including Nigerian Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick, who said on Monday that “most of Africa is excited about it”.
World Cup-winners Diego Maradona and Carles Puyol have also spoken in favour of the 48-team format, as has Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who believes it could offer better protection to players.
DFB president Reinhard Grindel had voiced his concerns over the proposal, while the influential European Club Association, which represents the interests of the major sides across the continent, opposed the changes.
“In the interest of the fans and the players, we urge FIFA not to increase the number of World Cup participants,” ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. “Politics and commerce should not be the exclusive priority in football.”
English Football Association chief Martin Glenn also stated before the vote that he would prefer the smaller format to remain.
The changed format will see 48 teams split into 16 groups of three teams, with the top two in each progressing to a round-of-32 knockout stage.

DISASTER! Nigeria’s Flamingoes crash out of World Cup

Nigeria’s Flamingoes rounded up a disastrous U17 World Cup when they were trounced 3-0 by North Korea Saturday in a final Group C match.

Striker Ri Hae Yon plundered a hat-trick to book Nigeria’s flight back home.

The Flamingoes, captained by Rasheedat Ajibade in her second U17 World Cup, were never really in this contest.

Nigeria failed to score a goal in their three matches and managed only a goalless draw with England to finish on a solitary point.

The Flamingoes, who reached the quarterfinals in the last three editions of the competition, suffered from lack of international exposure as they did not play any international warm-up before Jordan 2017.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said they did not have the cash to arrange any international games for the team.

WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: Emenike faces axe

There are very strong indications that Sunday Oliseh will axe Emmanuel Emenike from next month’s World Cup qualifier against Swaziland after the striker failed to deliver in four matches under the new Eagles coach.

Oliseh is a big admirer of Emenike after he top scored at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, but he has now gone more than two years without a goal for the three-time African champions.

His last goal was in Ethiopia in October 2013 in a final 2014 World Cup play-off.

A top source close to the team revealed: “Oliseh is disappointed Emenike has not justified the confidence he has in him.

“He has been given his chance by the coach, who is now seriously considering Odion Ighalo to lead his attack against Swaziland next month.”

Watford striker Ighalo responded to his snub by the Eagles coach for his first set of call-ups by scoring in a 3-0 win over Cameroon in Brussels.

It was his second goal for the Eagles after he fired his first against Chad in Kaduna in June.

Nigeria and Swaziland will battle for a place in the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The two legs are slated for between November 9 and 17 with the overall winners to a third round to be played on a mini-league basis.

2018 RUSSIA WORLD CUP DRAWS: Favourable draw for holders Germany, Spain to meet Italy

World champions Germany will begin the road to their title defence in a favourable qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup in Russia which features the likes of Czech Republic and Norway.

Joachim Low’s side lifted the famous trophy in Brazil last year and will be expected to be among the 32 nations to feature in Russia following a kind draw in Saint Petersburg on Saturday.

Former Germany striker Olivier Bierhoff conducted the UEFA draw alongside Aleksandr Kerzhakov, with Low’s world champions also lining up against Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan and San Marino in Group C.

Old foes England and Scotland will compete to progress from Group F, with Slovakia also likely to be firmly in the reckoning – Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta their other opponents.

European heavyweights Spain and Italy will meet in Group G, while Republic of Ireland and Wales will not have far to travel when they lock horns in Group D.

Spain – seeking to make amends for a group-stage exit in Brazil – have met Italy regularly in recent years, the former winning the Euro 2012 final between the two nations.

Group A will see Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his Sweden side take on France, with Netherlands also in the mix.

Sweden’s 2014 World Cup play-off conquerors Portugal should have an easier time of it in Group B – Cristiano Ronaldo and co taking on the likes of Switzerland, Hungary and Latvia.

In African qualifying, 2010 hosts South Africa will seek to re-establish themselves after missing out on the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Shakes Mashaba’s men face Angola first up, while Morocco and Tunisia face Equatorial Guinea and the winner of South Sudan and Mauritania respectively.

Following their run to the last 16 in Brazil, Algeria begin against Tanzania or Malawi, while another surprise package from 2014, Costa Rica, will feature in CONCACAF Group B alongside Panama.

United States will face Trinidad and Tobago in Group C, while Patrick Kluivert’s maiden qualification draw with Curacao could see them take on Honduras and Mexico if they get past El Salvador.

Oceania favourites New Zealand will feature in Group B alongside Solomon Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu.

The continent’s representatives in the intercontinental play-offs will play South American opposition, while CONCACAF will take on the Asian Football Confederation in the other fixture.
