Brazil 2014 heroes inspiring young Ticas

This has been no ordinary year for Costa Rica so far. Fresh from hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in March and April, the country remained firmly in the global limelight when the world’s top national teams convened at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, with Los Ticos stunning everyone by going all the way to the quarter-finals.

The spotlight has stayed on Costa Rican football at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014, and while results have not gone Las Ticas way so far, there can be no doubting the determination of the players to build a brighter future for women’s football back home.

Three of them – Maria Paula Coto, Gloriana Villalobos and Melissa Herrera, respectively known as Paula, Glori and Ficha to their team-mates – spoke to FIFA.com about that goal and how the men’s ground-breaking campaign at Brazil 2014 is inspiring them to strive for more.

“The Costa Rica team did something really beautiful at Brazil 2014,” said striker Herrera. “I got emotional about it because I’d never seen anything like it before me. I wasn’t born when Italy 1990 happened, and what our national team achieved was truly unforgettable.”

The success enjoyed by Jorge Luis Pinto’s side has increased the pressure on Herrera and her team-mates to achieve results, though they have yet to come their way at Canada 2014, with defeats to France and Paraguay leaving Las Ticas with only a slim chance of qualifying for the knockout rounds ahead of their final Group D match against New Zealand.

Reflecting on those growing expectations, Herrera said: “We have to know how to deal with that because the situation is different. Women’s football in Costa Rica has not had much support yet. It’s not like the USA, where there are professional leagues.”

The fact that Herrera honed her electric pace on the athletics track and not in youth team or academy is an indication of the work that still needs to be done to raise the standard of Costa Rican women’s football.

Explaining how she found her way into the game, the smiling Herrera said: “I was starting out as an athlete and I’d won a lot of medals already. Then I saw that the national team were holding trials and I told my mother that I wanted to go. She came with me and I was selected for a training camp in San Jose. I have to say, I’ve learned how to run fast and I still consider myself a sprinter. It’s in my blood.”

Like Herrera, both Villalobos and Coto have starring roles in the side. Despite being only 14 and 15 years old respectively, they are among its most experienced players, having also formed part of the Costa Rica team that hosted the recent U-17 world finals.

“It was tough for me to start with because the girls were very big,” said Paula, pointing to the challenges she has faced. “All the same, I saw that even though they were physically stronger, I had to give as good as I got and fight for my dream.”

Though the intrepid Costa Ricans still have some way to go before they can compete on an even footing with the world’s top teams, the achievements of their fellow countrymen in Brazil a few short weeks ago have shown what can be done.

“Costa Rica is a small country, but size doesn’t matter when you dream big, as the men proved at Brazil 2014,” said a defiant Villalobos. “Nobody gave them a chance, but they chased their dream and made it a reality.”

Wrapping things up, she added: “We are going to do our very best to make history, just like the men’s team did. And we’re also going to do our bit to support the development of women’s football, to make sure it grows and gets more backing.”

World Cup has made Omeruo better – Boro coach

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has said he expects Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo to be a better player after the World Cup in Brazil.

“He was handed the opportunity to play in the World Cup and he is now coming back to us a better player,” Karanka told The Northern Echo.

“He is a very important player to us. He is someone I love to have with us because he’s a player who came here from Chelsea and his mood was always perfect. He was always happy and fighting for his position.”

He played all four matches involving Nigeria at Brazil 2014.

The 20-year-old Omeruo made 14 appearances for the Championship team last season after he made a switch from Stamford Bridge to the Riverside in January on loan.

He is back on a second loan spell with Middlesbrough despite interests from EPL sides like Hull City and QPR.

  • I worked hard for Eagles at World Cup – Mikel

I worked hard for Eagles at World Cup – Mikel

Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has defended his World Cup performance, claiming he tried to play for the team rather than seek glory.

The Chelsea midfielder continues to be the brunt of criticism following what has been widely perceived as a disappointing World Cup display, but the 27 year-old claimed he is being unfairly criticized.

“I tried to do my best to work hard for the team. We play together and nobody wants to be a Maradona because in our team, everybody has to play for each other,” Mikel told KickOffNigeria.com.

“All I wanted to do was work hard for the team and not to look for glory, but people don’t see that.

“You don’t always have to dribble everybody to help the team. And the coach knows that I was doing my best.”

Mikel admitted that his game fell short of the standards he set at the Confederation Cup last year, but said there was a slight change in styles.

“The Confederations Cup was a learning experience for us, and I think I was a little more forward there, but now I had to do more work for the team.

The defensive midfielder has been hugely influential in the Dutch’s progress to the quarter-finals but he will miss the remainder after injuring his groin against Mexico

Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong will miss the remainder of the World Cup after sustaining a groin injury in Sunday’s match against Mexico.

The Milan midfielder was withdrawn from his side’s last 16 clash with Mexico with less than ten minutes played in Fortaleza on Monday, after which coach Louis Van Gaal admitted the 29-year-old’s tournament could be over.

And on Tuesday the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) confirmed he would play no further part in Brazil.

“An MRI examination at the hospital confirmed that Nigel de Jong has suffered with a tear in his groin muscle. The 75-time international is therefore ruled out for two-to-four weeks,” read a statement on the national team website

“De Jong, who last Sunday in the last 16 match against Mexico was injured after 9 minutes, will remain with the team in Brazil to work on his rehabilitation.”

The Netherlands continue their campaign for their first ever World Cup crown when they travel to Salvador on Saturday for a quarter-final clash with Costa Rica.

  • World Cup: OSMI battles StarTimes over TV right infringement

World Cup: OSMI battles StarTimes over TV right infringement

Optima Sports Management International (OSMI) and DStv are engaged in a battle with a low-end market pay TV over the infringement of its exclusive FIFA World Cup terrestrial broadcast rights.

The Nation exclusively gathered from sources that StarTimes has been airing the World Cup matches on a terrestrial station, NTA 24, which is one of the TV channels on its bouquet. This action is said to have violated OSMI transmission agreement with the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON).

BON is the umbrella body of radio and television stations in the country. Under the agreement, BON, through its network of radio and television stations, OMSI was billed to broadcast the 64 matches of the World Cup to Nigerians free.

But, DStv was reported to have  blocked all terrestrial stations on its platform to avoid any infringement from StarTimes.

The Public Relations Manager of StarTimes, Mr. Anetor Irete, confirmed the development, saying that StarTimes received a query from OSMI. “We received a letter requesting that we shouldn’t air the World Cup matches because StarTimes has no pay-TV right to show any of the matches on our platform,” he said.

He added the terrestrial channels on the platform during the football season are free to access. “This means, no subscription is needed to view any of the analogue channels on the platform pay TV, hence it’s not a pay TV service we are offering Nigerians that have our set up box. As a result of the good relationship and understanding we have with analogue channels on the platform, we obliged them when they sent a request that we block signals during the football matches, and this, we have done to honour their request. During this football season, the matches can be viewed on super clarity channel NTA SPORT 24 and any other NTA Multi channels on the platform,”

Irete said further that in the interest of public, NTA-Star TV Network is an operator and also a digital transmission platform, which has the objective to carry as many analogue signals on the digital platform as we are the main transition platform.

“According to NBC law, we are obliged to transmit the obligations of states and local television stations in the province, especially in Jos (the pilot city or digital migration), StarTimes play the role of platform for digital migration.”

“StarTimes is saddled with helping Nigeria migrate from analogue to digital and the only licensed carrier for digital terrestrial television in Nigeria.

Every terrestrial digital TV platform must transmit public transmission channel (like NTA) in  the public interest.

“StarTimes conduct legitimate evidence, and does not infringe the rights of others subjective intent and fault,” he told The Nation via an email.

  • Maigari backs Eagles to defeat Bosnia

Maigari backs Eagles to defeat Bosnia

Nigeria Football Federation President, Aminu Maigari, has backed the Super Eagles to bounce back from the stalemate with Iran by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

Maigari made this disclosure when he paid a morale boosting visit to the team’s camp on Wednesday afternoon to assure the players of the Federation’s backing.

He also told the players he is confident they will advance to the next round of the competition in spite of their slow start.

Maigari reminded the team of how it struggled at the beginning of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, but later went on to win the competition.

“We have heard the barrage of criticisms against you by the same people who say you are the best in the world only a few days ago,” kickOffNigeria.com quoted Maigari as saying to the players.

“But we know that it was the same thing that happened at the Nations Cup and helped to rejuvenate the team.

“I am certain that those who have criticized you today, will be the same people that will join to celebrate you in the coming weeks and it will be to the glory of God and the greatness of Nigeria,” he declared.

In response, Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, said he was aware of the criticisms especially in the social media but declared that the team remains undaunted and will once again prove critics wrong in Saturday’s match.

“We know the football family is behind us, we know the NFF is behind us and we will not let the nation down when the time comes for us to be counted among great football nations,” he said.

The NFF President thereafter presented the papers of the landed properties given to the team by President Goodluck Jonathan after winning the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa.

Maigari was accompanied on the visit by the Chairman of NFF Technical Committee, Barr. Chris Green, Chairman, Media and Publicity of the NFF, High Chief Emeka Inyama, Executive Committee member and Enyimba FC boss, Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu and the Assistant Director Media, NFF, Demola Olajire.

Also with the NFF President were – former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu and the Personal Assistant to the NFF President, Jubril Nasir.
