    YABATECH matriculates 5,049

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Yaba, Lagos was agog, last weekend, during the matriculation of freshers held Sport Complex.

Administering oath on the students, the Registrar, Mrs Charity Amapakabo, advised them to be obedient to the school rule and shun unruly behaviour.

She said the college does not allow any student to possess firearms, adding the school frowned at vices, including drug abuse, cultism and sexual harassment.

The Rector, Dr Margaret Ladipo, charged the students to use the opportunity to strive for excellence, saying management would ensure strict compliance of the school regulations. She advised the freshers to abide by the oath they took and display good behaviour.

“You must desist from social vices and examination misconduct,” the Rector advised.

The college matriculated 2,416 freshers into its Higher National Diploma (HND) and 3,035 students for National Diploma (ND).

The Rector added: “You have been chosen out the over 110,000 candidates, who applied to study at the college. You must exhibit maturity and pursue academic goals with discipline and good behaviour. Every student must have 75 per cent lecture attendance to be allowed for examination.”

Some of the freshers, who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE, promised to use the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

    YABATECH ASUP fetes retirees

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) chapter, has honoured some retired lecturers of the institution. They included the former deputy rector Mr Kolade Oshinowo.

The event was the maiden valedictory congress organised by the union.

Oshinowo advised workers, especially academics, to prepare for their retirement while in service.

Once in retirement, Oshinowo said, most people were forgotten except few productive ones who were relevant.

“Service is not for a lifetime,” Oshinowo warned. “People should be conscious of time as lots of it is wasted on unproductive things which should stop. Become an expert in your field, write books if you are in the arts; fabricate if you are in the engineering; just do something with time.”

Oshinowo who was the special guest of honour, urged the lecturers to take advantage of opportunities like research and others they enjoy while in service, in addition to knowing when to retire.

“I retired when I was 60 despite inducements to stay,” he added.

Chairman, ASUP, YABATECH Comrade Adeyemi Aromolaran gave reason for the event.

He said: “The purpose is to honour ourselves, in particular, our senior colleagues who are retiring after years of meritorious service to the college, and also to fraternise with our seniors that have left over 20,30,40 years ago.

“It was borne out of observation of the perceived indecent manner in which our members have been retiring after years of service without celebration.

“In ASUP-YABATECH lexicon, the valedictory congress has come to stay as an annual event from now on.”

The awards were divided into three: category one was for the elder statesmen, old retirees of over 10 years and above. The second was meant for past ASUP chairmen, while the immediate retirees comprised the third cadre. Over 33 awards were presented to the retirees.

Aromolaran calls on YABATECH management to put in place a befitting annual retirement celebration of workers’ years of service to the institution”.

  • YABATECH Rector cleared of graft allegations

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Rector Dr Margaret Ladipo has been cleared of corruption allegations by the police

The Head of Service of the Federation (HOSF) and YABATECH Governing Council also dismissed the allegation, saying the claims were baseless.

The police, HOSF and Governing Council said the allegations were the handiwork of suspended YABATECH bursar Olugbenga Ibirogba

Dismissing allegations, Governing Council Chairman Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said the rector was  transparent in her dealings.

He said: “Every contract awarded under the Rector’s watch went through due process, and no member of the Governing Council was in any way rewarded for facilitating her second term. She got it purely on the basis of merit, on the basis of her exceptional achievements in her first tenure in office.

“Dr. Ladipo, with the unwavering support of the Governing Council, and amid paucity of funds, has been able to consolidate on these amazing achievements of which both staff and students are exceedingly proud.”

Babatope  said the council approved the Rector’s N5 million security vote, because of the college’s security challenges.

A statement by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Oni, said Ibirogba’s petitions were sent to the Federal Ministry of Education, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Inspector-General of Police, Chief of Staff to the President, HOSF and the Governing Council.

It said the council, at the HOSF’s instance, set up a five-man Committee led by Hon. Shehu Ibrahim Kagara to investigate the allegations. The panel, in a report dated September 13, 2013 held that the rector was not guilty.

In a letter to the Rector dated September 27, 2013, the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Biekoroma Amakapabo, noted: “The Council is satisfied with the findings of the Committee that the allegations were spurious and baseless; and a mischief intended to malign the character of the Rector.”

On December 30, 2013, the Ministry of Education, through Mrs. H.U. Abdullahi, Director Tertiary Education, also cleared the Rector, saying she is “exonerated of all the allegations as they were baseless and spurious.”

In January, last year, Ibirogba rehashed the allegations in fresh petitions.

A report dated August 27, last year, and signed by Arungwa Nwazue, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Admin) on behalf of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Abuja, described the allegations as “trivial, frivolous, false and lacking in credibility”. It recommended that Ibirogba “be arraigned in court for giving false information to the police.”

Power outage: Students read under street light

A tour to Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) Yaba, Lagos in the middle of the night would leave one wondering what time of the day it really could be as students floored the street reading for the forthcoming examination.

There is no denial that the spirit of examination has inspired these students to read but definitely in different ways.

While some students are actively engaged with their books and other educational materials, some others are engaged in a chat, playing, and shouting. For them, the maxim: ‘All read without play makes Jack a dull boy’ perfectly fits.

Interestingly, while some took to the streets to find academic inspirations, their colleagues decided to the god of the classroom for their inspiration. Hopefully, everyone is inspired towards achieving success in the examination.

When asked why the street has suddenly become source of inspiration, it was discovered that their action was motivated out of the lack of power supply on the campus.

Further probe into the situation revealed that the institution has been devoid of Power supply for a couple of days, running into the exam period.

Sadly, the institution would not entertain the excuse of lack of power supply as the reason why any student would perform poorly in the examination. Thus, the need to seek alternative but cost free power supply – Street light.

The institution, which has being deserted for some days after the vacation of full time students, regained its liveliness as part time students prepare for examination.

Although, practical examinations have begun with some departments of the institution, the other departments are expected to join soon.

    YABATECH axes SUG

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has suspended the  Students’ Union Government (SUG), following the violence that marred its election penultimate Monday. MUBARAK SALAUDEEN (ND II Student) reports.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has been suspended. Its suspension followed the violence that marred its election penultimate Monday.

The campus was thrown into disarray few minutes before the results of the six-hour election were to be announced. It was gathered that a fight broke out among  students while the election outcome was being awaited.

The fight, CAMPUSLIFE gathered, led to shooting by a group of gunmen suspected to be secret cult members.

The electoral committee members scampered for safety; students ran helter-skelter. In the commotion, a student whose name could not be confirmed was hit by stray bullet on the shoulder. Another, a women, fainted as guns boomed.

The timing of the election seemed unsuitable, given that it came two days before the second semester examination.

The election started peacefully at 9am in all faculties, with accreditation of students. By 3pm, voting ended and collation of ballots followed.

But, a few minutes before the announcement of results, there was pandemonium, following a brawl among students.

The election was keenly contested. The post of president had four contestants – Olawale Shebiolegebe (Office Technology Management) and Oladele Lawal (Accountancy), Akeem Adeniyi (Hospitality Catering Management), and Emmanuel Awoleye (Electrical Engineering).

Other offices also had more than two students contesting to occupy them.

It was gathered that there were signs of violence during the exercise but the school security personnel did not act fast enough to contain the threat. At 8pm, sporadic gunshot rented the air. The arrival of policemen from Sabo Police Station restored normalcy to the campus.

Students chided the college management for poor security arrangement during the election, saying the authorities only invited the police when havoc had been wreaked.

CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the gunshot victim was taken to the nearby Nigerian Army Reference Hospital. The unconscious lady was revived at the college’s medical centre.

Eyewitnesses said the election was rowdy at the faculties of Engineering, Management and Business Studies, Science. A student in the School of Management and Business Studies, who pleaded for anonymity, said he could not vote because of the fight.

The following day, the college management rose from an emergency meeting, announcing the suspension of students’ union activities on the campus.

The Registrar, Ms BIekoroma Amapakabo, signed the memo which placed the ban on unionism indefinitely.

The memo reads: “Students unionism in the college is suspended with immediate effect and till further notice. All form of protest and social activities are also banned. Students who violate this order will be sanction.”

The Dean, Students’ Affairs Unit, Mr Omobayo Raheem, in a telephone chat, said some students resorted to violence when they became desperate and wanted their wishes at all cost, thereby disturbing the peace on the campus.

He added that the suspension of the union became necessary to restore calmness to the school. He advised students to comply with the directive, adding that the incident would be investigated.

Asked about the condition of the gunshot victim, the Dean said the student was recovering and “will be discharged soon”.

Unconfirmed reports say the student has been transferred from the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Idi-Araba. But, Raheem refused to comment on this. The victim was said to be a Mass Communication student.

“We have zero tolerance for cultism and gangsterism and other negative conducts on our campus; everybody is now being closely watched.

“Our certificate is issue based on intellectualism; we want the college to continue to produce graduates who will make the college proud.’’

The director attributed students joining bad companies to a lack of parental control, monitoring and love.

“Most parents have abandoned the training of their children to schools, churches and mosques.

“Many students have gone astray because their parents and guardians have failed in their role.”

Oni said that lecturers in the college had been saddled with the responsibilities of educating and mentoring students on morals.

“The lecturers have now imbibed the role of being parents to their students rather than just being teachers.

“And with their role as both lecturers and parents, they will be able to transform their students to better persons,’’ he said.

Oni said that the college authorities were also doing everything possible to beef-up security on the campus.

“We have patrol vehicles going round the campus 24 hours every day to ensure safety on the campus.”

Oni recalled that some students of the college were rusticated last August for indulging in cult activities after they were found culpable.

He said that following the incident, the authorities had organised various orientation courses for both fresh and returning students to forestall a re-occurrence.

“Now, once any student is caught or suspected, such student will first be withdrawn from the hostel,” he stated.
