    Omojola’s unseen expressions at YABATECH

Spurred by the success of last year’s open air art exhibition in Ikeja, Lagos, Funso Omojola will on Saturday, July 13 hold a two-week solo art exhibition entitled Unseen Expressions.

The exhibition, which will run till July 27, will hold at the Yusuf Grillo Hall School of Art, Design and Printing, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos.

Speaking at a press preview session in Lagos, Omojola, said the responses from collectors at the last outing were very encouraging and inspiring for him to remain in the business of art.

Unseen Expressions will feature 10 paintings and 38 prints of world famous inspirational people and their statements on different issues. They include prints of icons, such as martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Indira Ghandi, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Chinua Achebe.

Among the works for display are Crossover, Celebration, Face of Lagos, Unseen Expressions, Ocean wave, Circle of life and Contentment.

In Ocean wave, a medium size painting in acrylic with a bit of relief is arranged in a set of 3 pieces (measuring 12×12 inches) combined to create some feelings of wave movement. Omojola uses the Circle of life to illustrate the natural circle of life most living being pass through. All living things have a moment at which they become “alive.” That beginning of life marks the first point on the circle of life.

The paintings, which are in acrylic is a set of six panels arranged together comprising two sets of 22×22 and 4 sets of 22×8 inches. 3. Contentment is an acrylic on canvas showing two sets of 10×30 and 30×20 inches as well as three panels.

One other outstanding painting is the portraiture of a lady dressed in beautiful colours with a head gear to match. But the green colour background of the work complements the entire composition. Celebration, captures the visual appeal of a talking drum in a four-piece panel in a star-shaped format.

Omojola captures his journey into Lagos in 1987 in Unseen Expressions, a 25-piece panel showing different objects of decorations, forms and images of his first encounter with Lagos. The panels are all in Black and White.

  • Fresh lift for widows

    Fresh lift for widows

IN support of widows, acting chairman, Society of Nigerian Artists, Mrs Stella Awoh, is opening a solo art exhibition entitled: Five Series of Hephzibah and Beulah, at the Art Gallery, School of Art, Design and Printing, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos tomorrow. According to her, 50 per cent of the proceeds from the exhibition will be given to the first 10 widows that will attend the opening of the exhibition. Also, a workshop on arts and crafts will be organised to empower the widows.

About 30 works featuring mono prints, paintings and mixed media will be on display at the show that will run till January 20.

Five Series of Hephzibah and Beulah is one of Mrs Awoh’s platforms to draw government’s attention to the plight of widows. Mrs Awoh, a art teacher at YABATECH, said the campaign would remain on-going until positive responses are got from the appropriate quarters on matters affecting the widows.

“Widows will always come up because of the economic situation in the country. And until government rises to the challenges, this campaign, using the art, will not stop. By now a bill should be before the National Assembly addressing the issues confronting the widows. Legislators are debating gay marriage, but no mention of the widows. The first ladies are trying but not enough to change the situation,” she said at a preview session in Lagos.

Among works for the exhibition are Travail of widowhood, She will get there, Strokes of life, Peace, Destiny, Omolaso and Trade by barter.

She lamented that the very fabric of the country is under attack: the traditional values that she was founded upon have been eroded by years of social decay. The breakdown of family values, she said, has increased in proportion. “Widows are being dehumanized in some states. Riots and crime are issues faced by even small villages. Kidnapping is a major source of national concern. It is difficult, if not impossible, to read newspapers and magazines that do not associate Nigerian widows with corruption and insecurity. Not only have the national and international problems increased, but individual difficulties are also on the rise. Stress and emotional exhaustion are common in many families,” she added.

To Mrs Awoh, tribes and tongue may differ, ‘we must stand in brotherhood and unity. God delights in widows; we are precious in His sight. God’s intent is that we should enjoy His love, grace and faithfulness. This must reflect in every home, most especially as a widow.

    Muslim students celebrate week

At the celebration of the Maiden Edition of the Annual Islamic Propagation Week (IPW) branch’s the Amir (president), Abdul Azeez Arisekola said: “The society today is filled of atrocities, immoralities, enmitys; illegalities have become the order of the day. We live in a world where in the name of liberty, nudity is put above dignity. Every attempt to correct these abnormalities is in a shambles. Whosoever tries to convince others is being regarded as a nonentity, but we say these things be put to an end.”

Ali also condemned the injustice perpetrated by leaders, saying:“Our world leaders today have failed; they have perpetrated the highest level of injustice considering the issue of the Palestinians. The Israelites have been made to occupy a land that does not belong to them and as well have occupy the space of the Palestinians on the world map and the whole world kept quiet! Our silence is Haram,”.

Ali deplored the tagging of Muslims in the South West by some people as Boko Haram.

“Once you are dressed like a Muslim, you are an automatic Boko Haram. People today cannot differentiate between Islam which means peace and Boko Haram which is the name of a small group of people who are antagonistic to Western and Islam does not preach violence; it is not against Western education,” he said.

He said the theme of the week The Empyreal Crescent (A Refreshing Renaissance) was chosen in order to address the current happenings in the country and the world over. He said Islam preaches love and unity.

“The theme of the week is centred on the pure teachings of Al-Islam that has come to stay in this campus of ours. The teachings that is, established on truth and entrusted with peace; the religion of Islam preaches love and unity. Enough is enough; this ideology is against terrorism and vandalism,” he said.

“In addition, my sincere advice also goes to my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters to hold on to the rope of Allah and not to go in division. We must have trust and sincerity in our leaders in as much as they govern us with the Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

It is only with this that we can achieve success in totality. We must hold firm to the bond of brotherhood and shun any form of differences among us as Allah has said that the most honourable servant in His sight is the most pious,” he urged.
