Be potent force for peace and justice, Osinbajo tells D-8 countries

Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has urged the D-8 countries to remain a potent force for peace, justice and the observance of fundamental freedom, at all times, to enhance trade relations.

Osinbajo said maintenance of peace and justice in the D-8 countries was necessary, especially with the social upheavals, conflicts and tensions flaring up everywhere.

He told the ministers that though the present situation in the world was a time of great challenges, it was also a time of enormous opportunities.

“The fall in commodity prices has led us to deepen diversification of our economies and challenge industries to greater productivity and cost effectiveness.

“Most of our nations are achieving great milestones in the use of renewable energy while our young people, in spite difficulties, are competing with their peers in commercial use of innovation and technology,’’ he said.

He also said it was time to leverage on the clear vision of the founders of the organisation for economic cooperation by advancing the positions of developing countries in the world economy.

Other areas, he said were; diversification and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance and provide better standards of living for the people.

Osinbajo said the organisation must begin to make concrete plans for collaboration and partnerships for areas it had marked for cooperation.

He said it could this by using its strengths and comparative advantages to advance the good of one and all of its nations.

The areas of collaboration are; finance, banking, rural development, science and technology, humanitarian development, agriculture, energy, environment and health.

He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to enlarge the opportunities for trade and investments amongst the D-8 countries and its readiness to continue to support the work of the organisation in the areas of collaboration.

The D-8 Secretary-General, Dr Seyed Mousavi, in an address said trade was the backbone of the D-8 member states’ cooperation, adding that it needed to be improved substantially.

He said though the value of the D-8 inter-trade increased from 50 billion dollars in 1997 to around 100 billion dollars in 2015, the revenue remained below the target of the D-8 set at 500 billion dollars.

Mousavi said there was room for improvement to achieve the target set by the founding leaders, stressing that participation of member countries was very important to realise the objective.

He said networking among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the D-8 organisation was also very vital to enable them have access to knowledge and expertise.

The D-8 was established in 1997 to primarily promote industrial and other economic activities in the global economy using the same platform to fast-track the position of member countries’ activities.

The 3-day meeting is scheduled to end on Thursday.

Osinbajo calls for consensus on Legal practice in Nigeria

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for consensus among legal practitioners on the preservation of the legal practice in Nigeria to enhance the profession and national development.

Osinbajo made the call while delivering the closing address at the maiden dinner of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, held in Lagos.

He said that the elite in every community, whether ethnic, religious or professionals, owe it a duty to ensure the preservation of such community.

Osinbajo said it was important for the legal community to define the ethics, vogues, acceptable conducts and those that would not be tolerated in the community

The Vice President said that the Senior Advocates must provide guidance to the legal community so as to maintain the integrity and prestige of the profession and sustain the confidence of the public.

Osinbajo said: “A professional elite such as ourselves, we owe a responsibility to ensure that we act professionally with honour and integrity; first, for the selfish reason that it confers on us natural respect and prestige.

“Ultimately, the difference between the elite or professional, and those who destroy the patrimony, is the extent to which the elites are willing to make sacrifices and constrain that selfishness which is common with humans.

“An elite is one who agrees to sacrifice individual greed, ambition and quest for power for the overall good of all.

“It is the responsibility of the elites to act with honour, integrity and sometime with quietness.”

He noted that in Britain, the elites have maintained the prestige and integrity of the British legal system, adding that Nigerian lawyers should emulate such good conduct.

According to him, the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria must reach a consensus to that the Legal profession does not perish.

The Vice President congratulated the 29 newly conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria, urging them to be honourable flag bearers of the legal profession.

Speaking with newsmen after the dinner, Osinbajo reiterated the call for a consensus from lawyers to enhance the justice process and preserve judicial integrity.

The dinner was attended by former Nigeria Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Dr Christopher Kolade and the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs Folake Solanke.

The rest included Chief Wole Olanipekun, Dr Paul Usoro and Chief Felix Fagbohungbe among others.

Osinbajo seeks collaboration of 3 tiers of govt.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for collaboration of the three arms of government to resolve issues of arbitration to further advance ease of doing business in Nigeria.

Osinbajo made the call during the Abuja Stakeholders Engagement Forum on the Ease of Doing Business which held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, businesses face legal constraints which delay their progress in advancing their investments.

“We have a real problem with the adjudicatory process and we have to resolve it by gaining collaboration between the legislature, executive and the judiciary.

“The good thing is that there is a recent decision on arbitration and how you can question arbitration processes, but we need to advance that.

“At the end of the day, if you do not have a system that can resolve disputes efficiently why should anybody worry about bringing in anything at all.

“It is something that we need to work on and must just keep our focus on it.’’

The Vice President also criticised the lack of understanding of business processes by officials and agencies thus creating problems for investors.

He specifically listed customs and immigrations as the agencies that attention should be focused on to tackle the issue.

“We have to look at our agencies carefully.

“We have been looking at Customs and Immigration especially at the airports and the different ports and I think that we really need to ramp up that particular aspect of our work.”

Osinbajo, who also pointed out that bureaucracies and negative attitude by personnel should be dealt with, said that no sector should do things without active collaboration with other stakeholders.

He, however, noted that there was also the need to get more people that would make suggestions and criticise when necessary for the improvement of the business environment.

In his remarks, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, acknowledged that the new business indices in Nigeria was encouraging.

Enelamah said that engagement, communication as well as political will were needed to consolidate on the gains.

The Controller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Mohammed Babandede, said between July and September alone the service issued 11,000 visas on arrival which was more than what was done in the past two years.

Acting Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Lady Azuka Azinge, in a good will message restated the commission’s resolve to make business registration easy and fast.

‘Nigeria lost N6tr worth of goods to fire disasters in five years’

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Sen. Andy Uba, says Nigeria has lost over N6 trillion worth of goods to fire disasters in the past five years.

Uba made the disclosure at the International Fire Conference and Exhibition, organised by the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Interior, held on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, nationally, direct and indirect reported and unreported losses to the economy have been put conservatively at about N6 trillion.

“Alarming as these numbers are, they could be significantly higher if all the incidents in rural areas were recorded by an efficient operational fire statistics database.

“There is a general consensus on the need to mitigate this trend to stopping the fire before they start,” he said.

The lawmaker told the Federal Government to reposition fire service delivery to make it modern and efficient.

Uba, who noted that less than two per cent of Nigeria’s population were safety literate, called for media partnership on creating awareness on the issue.

Declaring the two-day event open, the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said that outbreaks were preventable given the necessary equipment and manpower.

The vice-president was represented by the Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau.

He said that with support from the legislature and backing from the presidency, the Federal Fire Service would be one of the best in the world within the next five years.

“The effort by the National Assembly in the 2016 budget to procure five equipment is encouraging. This did not happen in the last 30 years or more.

“We are doing our best to ensure that Nigeria remains safe. There is a correlation between climate change and conflict,” he said.

The President of the Fire Disaster Prevention and Safety Awareness Association of Nigeria, Mr Badanga Lamidi, commended the senate for its effort in ensuring safety of Nigerians.

Osinbajo says financial inclusion key in economic recovery plan

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesdays in Abuja said that the country needs to ensure financial inclusiveness for all towards the revamp of the nation’s economy.

He stated this while hosting Queen Maxima of Netherlands who is also the UN Secretary General’s Special Advocate for inclusive finance for development.

According to Osinbajo, financial inclusiveness is important for development of the individual, community and country.

“Of cause financial inclusion is absolutely important for us as an economy.

“We need to be able to ensure that all of our people, wherever they live, no matter how far away they are can be reached with financial products; have bank accounts.

“Payments can be made to them and they also can make payments; in other words they can participate in the entire financial architecture that the country offers and even that the international community offers.

“And that really is important for development, for their development as individuals and as communities.’’

The Vice President acknowledged the Queen’s second visit to the country to find out how far the country had gone with its financial inclusion plans and projects.

Responding, Queen Maxima said that “Nigeria is a country of enormous potential where financial inclusion should be playing great role for your development.’’

The Queen stated that having access to savings, insurance payment credit could make the people move out of poverty and invest in small businesses, create income, employ people and save for the rainy day.

“Financial inclusiveness is a key element to support the economic growth recovery plan being championed by you.

“Since 2008 Nigeria has actually made progress growing from 23 per cent to 48 per cent of financial inclusion.

“But still more than half of Nigerians have to deal without very basic financial services that you and I rely on every day.

“And in the last couple of years progress has been stalled and there is a moment to renew this commitment and leadership on financial inclusion,’’ she added.

The Queen urged Nigeria to maximize the use of mobile money and make it sustainable, responsive and safe for all Nigerians.

According to her the country has many potentials in that respect while many countries have already achieved it.

She said only two per cent of Nigerians could use mobile money in contrast to 70 per cent in Ghana and higher numbers in other parts of the world.

She stressed the need for strong ICT systems and assured that the UN would assist the country build a strong financial inclusive system.

Angry Oyo-Ita confronts Kyari in FEC over leaked memo

The Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, showed her anger on Wednesday when she reacted in a very unusual manner at the Council Chambers apparently over her leaked memo to President Muhammadu Buhari.

This happened before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council ( FEC ) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Her angry reaction was witnessed by all those who were in the Council Chambers for the swearing-in of the new Secretary to the Government or the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the launch of the 2018 armed forces emblem.

Many Council members were also in the hall for the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Chief of Staff to the President Abba Kyari were seen questioning Oyo-Ita, shortly before the commencement of the event which started at 10:55am.

Oyo-Ita, who has never lost her cool in the public, was seen angrily gesticulating while trying to make her point in what was obviously a heated argument with Kyari.

The Head of Service went back to her seat and then rose again and headed straight to Osinbajo, who also engaged her in a tête-a-tete over the issue.

The National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, later joined the conversation after which the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation was seen calming the Head of Service.

She was later asked to return to her seat by the Deputy Chief of Staff Femi Ipaye, when it was now obvious all eyes were fixed on them.

The drama, which lasted about 10 minutes, was witnessed by Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Chief of justice of the federation, Walter Onnoghen, the Governor of Adamawa, Jibrila Bindu, All Progressives Congress National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, chief of defence staff, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police and other heads of paramilitary service among others.

A national daily had quoted Oyo-Ita, in the leaked memo, as saying that Buhari was aware of the reinstatement of the former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina.

Oyo-Ita was also quoted to have stated that she had warned the president against the controversial recall of the embattled former pension boss.

President Buhari had ordered last week the immediate disengagement of former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdullahi Abdulrasheed Maina.

Maina was in 2013 recommended for dismissal by the Federal Civil Service Commission following a recommendation by the Office of the Head of Service.

In 2012, Maina was accused of leading a massive pension fraud scheme amounting to more than N100 billion.

He was drafted by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2010 to sanitize a corrupt pension system.

  • FG saves $2m annually from local cement production – BUA CEO

FG saves $2m annually from local cement production – BUA CEO

The Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, has said that the local cement manufacturers produce over 25 million tonnes cement thus saving the country two million dollars annually.

He said this while addressing State House Correspondents after a meeting of the Presidential Industrial Advisory Council chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

“The most important thing I think is that the cement industry in Nigeria will continue to save Nigeria a lot of foreign exchange.

“If for example, you look at what we have produced in Nigeria today, maybe 25 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes, if we quantify that in terms of foreign exchange it is almost two billion dollars per year.

“That is a lot of money being saved because if we do not have these cement plants definitely we have to import cement.

“And not only do we have to spend money in terms of foreign exchange import but the price of cement definitely would have been higher than what it is today,’’ he said.

Rabiu also spoke about the expansion of his company’s facilities in order to make more cement available for local consumption.

According to him, we will be inaugurating our Sokoto plant next quarter, early 2018, and also our Edo second cement line will come on stream probably by second quarter of next year.

Rabiu mentioned the reduction of price of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO), and the appreciation of the local currency in the foreign exchange market as things that helped the sub-sector to grow.

“The foreign exchange has also come down; it is stable even though as we all know the cement industry does not really require a lot of foreign exchange.

“But the fall in foreign exchange rate has really helped in terms of the things that we import into Nigeria like spare parts, some raw materials like gypsum,’’ the industrialist said.

He acknowledged that a lot of issues to advance the industrial sector were discussed at the monthly Presidential Advisory Council meeting.

“As you all know this council is one that is trying to bring private sector together with the government to come up with ideas on how we can improve on a lot of things.

“Most especially infrastructure, power, roads and so many other things; I believe this is a good thing.

“The Council has made a lot of progress.

“A lot of areas have been identified that the government together with the private sector are going to work to see that work can start as soon as possible.

“In fact, I believe last week, one of the ideas that we presented was deliberated upon at the Federal Executive Council ( FEC ) meeting and approval was given.

“We are looking forward to another meeting and I believe in the next few months a lot of things will take shape as far as this council is concerned,’’ Rabiu added.
