Youths hail EFCC for probing Ochekpe

A group, Coalition of Youths Congress of Nigeria (CYCN), has hailed the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for investigating cases of embezzlement of government funds by the former administration to fund the 2015 elections.

CYCN said EFCC is doing a good job, considering that another election year is approaching.

It hoped those who diverted public funds to finance elections are punished to deter others in future.

Addressing reporters yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, CYCN Leader John Pam said the anti-corruption stance of the present administration would ensure that politicians do not divert the money for the development of the country.

Pam was reacting to the arraignment of a former Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, Mr. Raymond Dabo and the Coordinator of Jonathan/Sambo re-election campaign in Plateau State, Evangelist Lyons Sunday Jatau.

They were charged with the embezzlement of N450 million belonging to the Federal Government.

The trio will be arraigned on February 13 at a Federal High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on charges of receiving money from a former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke, to finance the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Sambo.

At the first hearing of the suit, Ochekpe told Justice Justice Musa Haruna Kurya that she gave the money to the late PDP governorship candidate in the 2015 election in Plateau State, G. N. S Pwajok.

CYCN said: “We are commending EFCC for taking these people to court so that when found guilty, justice will take its cause, which will be a warning to others who may want to so enrich themselves by diverting public funds meant for the provision of social amenities for our citizens.

“The interest of our group is to ensure corrupt a free society. For the first time, we have seen a government that is determined to rid this country of this scourge.”

  • How youths can make it big in Nigeria, by Inyang

How youths can make it big in Nigeria, by Inyang

Youths can make it big in Nigeria if they work hard at their potential and remain focused, Senior Pastor of Sure Word Assembly Okota, Lagos, Pastor Dennis Inyang, has stated.

He advised them to stay back in the country and work towards actualisation of their dreams instead of embarking on fruitless journey abroad.

Inyang told our correspondent last week that Nigeria has enough resources and opportunities to go round youths who know what they are doing.

According to him: “It is so sad to realise that many of our youths have given up on our country. That is why they will do anything to travel out of Nigeria under the illusion that they will make it in Europe, Asia or America.

“For some youths, anywhere is better than staying here. That is why some of them brave the odds to travel to Europe through Libya and such dangerous routes.

“Many end up as slaves and prostitutes in foreign nations. But that must change. That must stop.

“Nigeria is a great nation with great potential and I believe that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can make it here.”

He asked youths to take responsibility for their lives, realising that they ultimately become whatever they want.

Inyang, who runs Excel Africa, an NGO devoted to youth empowerment, said: “My first advice to any youth who wants to make it anywhere, not only in Nigeria, is simple: don’t outsource your future to anyone, not even the government.

“Take responsibility for your life and decide that no matter what comes your way, no matter what circumstance you find yourself in and no matter what others think of you, you will make it.

“Until you make up your mind to succeed, you will always have good and legitimate reasons to fail.

“As a youth, you should not be at the mercy of your environment. Recognise your potential and unleash it to create the future you desire.”

Though he said it is good to get education, Inyang, however, stated Nigerian graduates shouldn’t expect jobs to fall on their laps without personal efforts.

“There was a time when all you needed was to graduate from the university and a job would be waiting for you.

“So every youth should acquire some education. But part of the problem is that most of our youths go to school with the mind that they will get good employment when they graduate.

“When the job is not forthcoming, they get frustrated and may resort to crime. But times have changed.

“My advice to every youth is get an education that you can use. The value of your education is in what you can do with it if nobody employs you.”

He called on youths to dare to be self-employed, saying they shouldn’t expect mega wealth working for others.

Inyang stated: “There is nothing wrong with working for others But if that is all you aim to do as a youth, sorry, you will not make it big!

“Anyone who wants to make it big must attempt big things. No youth should be satisfied with handouts.

“He must capture a vision of a higher life and pursue it with all he’s got. He must keep at it, be able to hang on and get up if he falls.”

  • Indian envoy: MOOCs help youths skill up

Young Nigerians seeking to learn skills for employability may find the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) offered by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) useful.

India’s High Commissioner to Canada, H.E Mr Vikas Swarup, testified of the efficacy of the MOOC in transferring skills when he visited the COL office in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada last week.

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was created by Heads of Government of Commonwealth countries “to promote the development and sharing of open and learning distance education knowledge, resources and technologies.”

Swarup said many Indians, particularly women and girls, had gained skills through MOOCs powered by COL.

“The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) meets a very important lacuna in India and its work impacts people on the ground,” he said while addressing COL President, Prof Asha Kanwar and his team.

Kanwar on his part said the COL supports governments, institutions and organisations to expand the scale, efficiency and quality of learning by leveraging open, distance and technology-based approaches.

He said COL believes that learning must lead to economic growth, social inclusion and environmental conservation.

COL Vice President Dr K. Balasubramanian, said through its work, women in India had received millions of dollars in credits to support their businesses and shape their own futures.

Mr Swarup was accompanied by the Consul-General of India in Vancouver, Ms Abhilasha Joshi.

  • Youths urged to be the architects of their future

A socio-political advocacy group, Part-finders Nigeria Initiative (PNI),  has called on  youths to become the architects of their own future by showing more interests in the political development in Nigeria and participate actively in the political leadership selection process.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, J

by its Executive Director, Chief SBN Nwokolo, an architect, after a meeting to review recent developments in the polity, the group stated that, ” sitting on the fence when things are going wrong in the nation amounts to a tacit endorsement of bad leadership and continuous rape and underdevelopment of the nation.

” Nigeria  belongs to all her citizens. And the right for citizens to participate in the governance process or selection of those that should genuinely represent their interests in leadership positions, in a democratic government at all levels, is guaranteed by the constitution,” the group said.

It added that  “standing aloof or grumbling in one’s private space, or  on the social media about the ills of successive governments, without taking any legitimate, realistic steps, aimed at reordering the patterns of events that are contrary to the will of the people, makes one complicit in the continuing failure of leadership in our land. It is imperative to note that your singular vote  can make a difference in the choice of who represents you as a councilor, local government chairman, at the House of Assembly, National Assembly, governor or at the highest level, the presidency,” the goup noted, as it argued that “but without a valid voter’s card, automatically you make yourself irrelevant in performing this very important constitutionally given right.”

The PNI called on all Nigerians of voting age, who had not yet registered as a voter to take “the important step of making themselves eligible for voting in the coming elections by taking advantage of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters registration exercise, as our vote is not only our power but our life, in a way.

According to the group whose objective is given as advocacy  for “transparent, purposeful leadership, ethical reorientation, peace and uplifting of humanity”, a well utilised  electoral vote will give the electorate the “power to not only design the future they desire but also help in shaping a Nigeria of their dreams. As citizens begin the process of surviving the problems of unemployment, insecurity, poor healthcare delivery, infrastructure decay among others by using their votes wisely.”

  • Youths hail Dickson for good governance

Youths at the weekend trooped to the streets of Ogbia town in Ogbia Local Government of Bayelsa State to support the administration of Governor Seriake Dickson.

They hailed him for good governance.

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan is from Ogbia Council.

The youth and Jonathan’s kinsmen, who held pro-Dickson’s banners, extolled the leadership qualities of the governor and his desire to roll out developmental projects in the local government.

They said they took the action to correct a false impression by enemies of Ogbia kingdom that Dickson had abandoned their council.

Led by the newly-appointed Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths, Mr. Osaanya B. Osaanya, the youth said Dickson had given Ogbia appointments and developed schools.

They were also happy that the governor had earmarked N1 billion to tackle developmental challenges.

The Nation learnt that the rally was almost sabotaged by the Caretaker Committee Chairperson of Ogbia, Naomi Ogoli, who pressed for the cancellation of the event.

Youths suspected to be loyal to Ogoli, who was recently appointed a chairperson by Dickson, created tension and breached security at the Ogbia Brotherhood Hall, venue of the event. They were dispersed by security operatives.

The march, which was peaceful, attracted governor’s appointees from the council, besides Ogoli. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Gabriel Okara, represented Dickson.

Among Ogbia dignitaries in attendance were the Chairman of the Ogbia Restoration Caucus, Chief George Okirinya; Commissioner for Special Projects, Fred Obua; Commissioner for Community Development, Saviour Ibegi and Vice Chairman, Ogbia Local Government, Mr. Ebinyo Turner.

The youth sang and praised the governor for his support to Jonathan and Ogbia kingdom.

Osaanya said the solidarity mega rally was designed to thank Dickson for appointing more of their sons and daughters into key positions.

He said the governor demonstrated his love for them by building model schools and devoting N1 billion to repair internal roads, including other projects.

The aide assured Dickson that the youth would support his administration to reduce crime.

Stressing that ýonly an atmosphere of peace would attract development, he urged youths to shun cultism and drug abuse.

Osaanya asked them to avoid pipeline vandalism and other crimes, saying they should avail themselves of the opportunity in Dickson’s government by embracing empowerment schemes.

He said: “We have come out today to appreciate Governor Dickson for what he has been doing for us. It is clear for us to see. Our resolve to thank him is hinged on the fact that he has done well and will still do more.

“Not just in Ogbia, Dickson has in the last six years made Bayelsa a centre of attraction. He has built significant and legacy projects. We will give him more support and work to maintain peace in Ogbia kingdom.”

Okara hailed the youth for organising themselves in a peaceful mannerý and for showing solidarity and support for the governor.

He said the government loved Ogbia and would do more for the council.

The Commissioner for Special Projects, Fred Obua and that of Chieftaincy and Community Development, Saviour Ibegi, advised youths to flee from agents of division and distraction.

Information and Orientation Commissioner Danieýl Iworiso-Markson praised the youth for comporting themselves.

He noted that the unity of Ogbia people was not negotiable and their support for Dickson would remain unshakable.

Turner said better days were ahead for youths.

A member representing Ogbia Constituency II in the House of Assembly, Munalayefa Gibson, described Dickson as a leader par excellence.

  • ‘Youths capable of leading in 2019’

‘Youths capable of leading in 2019’

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Yusuf Kunle, has said youths should take over leadership in the state next year.

He said they are capable of leading, considering their prowess and innovation. “Youths are in tune with what is happening around the world,” he said.

Yusuf stressed the need for influential indigenes, who have excelled in the private sector, especially those in the diaspora, ýto get involved in politics of the state, noting that 2019 is the right time to make positive changes in Oyo.

He said electing uninspiring and non-innovative leaders, who lacked new ideas that could take the state out of poverty and economy doldrums, would not help the state.

He urged youths to put aside their differences and form a majority power bloc, saying they should not just come together, but should choose a think tank that would be responsible for drawing up policies, programmes, development maps, manifestos and others, thereby scaling through the barriers old people have set for them.

Yusuf urged elders to use their experience to support youths in their quest to lead the state, saying they are the future of every developing society.

  • Niger Delta youths reject Avenger’s threat of violence

Niger Delta youths reject Avenger’s threat of violence

Niger Delta youths has warned the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) against its recent threats to resume of violent agitation in the region.
Rising from their meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, at the weekend,  hundreds of the youths, who met under the auspices of Niger Delta Youth Leadership Forum (PANDLEAF),‎ told the avengers to shelve their plans “if they really loved the region”.
The youths, who deliberated on the state of the nation, insisted that the region had gone beyond a violent phase in its quest for development.
Speaking shortly after the meeting that lasted over four hours, the National President, PANDLEAF, Mr. Richard Akinaka, said non-violent agitation and intellectual engagements remained the best approach for the region.
The PANDLEAF President said: ”We strongly believe that the time for armed struggle is over. Life is in phases and so should our struggles be. We must be able to advance our agitations beyond that to the high grounds of intellectual and constructive engagement.
“In the alternative, we advocate a collective engagement of all stakeholders at a round-table, to forge common positions and fronts for further engagements with the Federal Government.
“We should redirect our energy to advance a common regional fronts in an intellectual manner that will cause people to respect  and listen to us. But sometimes, when you see the thing government does, to the shallow-minded, the best thing to do is to go the way of the gun because there are things that are going on that are not right.
“You see what our host communities are going through, the environmental problems, the Ogoni clean up that has been promised our people, nothing is going on. An impatient mind may say, we must resist these things, they are not right, but our advice  to our people is to avert war.
“War does not solve problem. We have passed through that stage of life, let us see how we can provide leadership and see how we can adopt internationally acceptable standards and advance the cause of our people, that is the stage we are in now.
“Indeed, we have a cause. One of the greatest problems we have is leadership failure. Our leaders have failed us at different times and one of the reasons is lack of cohesion and unity among them. So, we need that cohesion, we need that unity and synergy to ensure that we are facing government and international oil companies with a common cause.”
Akinika also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately stop further bloodshed across the country by rampaging herdsmen.
Describing the killings as senseless, he appealed to the President to find a lasting solution to farmers/herdsmen clashes.
He also argued that if the government should establish cattle colonies for herdsmen, it must also set up oil and gas colonies for people in the Niger Delta.
He insisted that it was the responsibility of herdsmen as private business owners to take personal responsibility to improve their business interests.
Akinaka said: “As a people, we have taken that position that herdsmen are private businesspeople. Some of us who have private businesses, take private and personal responsibility to advance our business interests.
“If herdsmen want land and spaces to do their business, they should acquire them within any of the states and do their business as it demands the way it is done elsewhere all over the world where you have people get ranches for their cattle and people go there to buy cattle for consumption purposes.
“So, that is the best thing to do. Government does not need to buy land for a private businessman and all of that. But if that is what the government wants to do, we are asking for oil and gas colony for our people too.
“We should be given extra reserve right to take full responsibility of our oil and gas industry because that is our area, that is our environment. We suffer environmental problems. So, if they want colony for their cattle, we want colony for our oil and gas business.”
Akinika further called on the people to stop speaking in discordant tunes, which he said was the bane of the region.
He charged the young people in the Niger Delta to participate fully in the political process and not to follow political leaders blindly.
He also appealed to political leaders in the region to unite to advance the cause of the people, adding that one of the reasons former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election was because he could not point out what he did for the Niger Delta.
Akinaka said: “PANDLEAF calls on all young people in the Niger Delta to participate fully in the political process and not follow political leaders blindly, owing to sheer ethnic chauvinistic sentiments or primordial and vassal political affiliations while advocating for sincerity and commitment on the part of the Federal Government.
“I was challenging someone of the political leaders. One of the greatest things we were able to do to campaign against former President Goodluck Jonathan was to say that six years of Jonathan, we could not point out what he was able to give to us.
“Goodluck himself acknowledged that that he could not do anything for our people and said that when he came back for second term, he would do something, unforunately, he did not come back. Let those who hold high offices in our region do something to set them apart.”
    End.

FERMA engages 800 unemployed youths in Kebbi

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in Kebbi, has engaged 800 unemployed youths in its Vegetation and Silt Control programme, an intervention to maintain roads and reduce accidents in the state.

The State Coordinator of the agency, Mallam Rilwanu Usman, made this disclosure in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

“We learnt that the vegetation and silt needed to be controlled in view of the harmful and devastating effects they had been causing to roads and motorists plying our roads in the state.

“Outgrowth of vegetation serves as hideout for armed robbers and also obstruct site distance by motorists; hence we engaged the youths as part of our efforts to reduce the rate of accident.

“By this, we prevent damage of vehicles and increase the life span of roads as well as reduce unemployment and idleness among the youth,” he said.

“The road is 82 kilometres length; it is pervaded by hydrological structures problem.

“It was rehabilitated six years ago by the State Government on behalf of the Federal Government but before work began, the road had since been in bad state,” he said.

The coordinator said the agency had repaired bad roads in Kanfani, Gotomo, Gangarin-Yantifa and potholes in Zauro along Birnin Kebbi and Argungu road.

He expressed optimism that the intervention would be sustained by the new management of FERMA with vigour and commitment in order to achieve potholes free roads in the state.

  • Youths demand release of abducted ex-commissioner

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) yesterday, told gunmen, who abducted a former Commissioner in Bayelsa State, Mrs. Marie Ebikake, to immediately release her unconditionally.

The youths, who described the incident as abominable, unacceptable, barbaric and condemnable, vowed to assist security agencies to arrest and prosecute the hoodlums.

Speaking in Yenagoa, IYC Central Zone Chairman Mr Tare Porri, asked misguided youths to apply caution and stop acts capable of embarrassing the Ijaw nation.

Porri said it was abominable for anybody to be kidnapped in Ijaw land, adding that the abduction of Ebikake was most despicable.

Describing Ebikake as a respected mother in the state, Porri asked her captors to spare no thought in releasing her without asking for ransom.

“We want to condemn the act in its entirety and then call for caution. I do not see reason why the Ijaw will kidnap a fellow Ijaw. I don’t want to believe that the kidnap was orchestrated by Ijaw people.

“As custodians of the Ijaw struggle, we don’t think it is ideal for an Ijaw man to kidnap a fellow Ijaw man. It is an abomination. It is unfortunate that in this 2018, people are still talking about kidnapping other human beings. It is unfortunate we have found ourselves in this situation.

“So, I use this opportunity to call on security agencies to redouble our efforts to arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice. I call on youths to desist from this act. These acts are inimical to our development as a people.

“I appeal to the captors to release this woman unconditionally. She is our mother and she is one woman that has made a lot of sacrifices for this state. So, whoever that is responsible should release this woman immediately without demanding ransom.

“We won’t allow criminals to always embarrass the Ijaw nation. We have reached out to all the security agencies to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. We are just trying to recover from the attack on Ndoro community and the next thing is this kidnapping.

Porri expressed fears that the incident could be politically-motivated ahead of the 2019 election and called on politicians and leaders to be mindful of their personal security.

The Nation gathered that the health condition of Mrs Ebikake was a source of worry to her family members, friends, political associates and other stakeholders.

A friend of Ebikake, who spoke in confidence said, they were scared of her health situation, disclosing that the woman is diabetic.

“She has been treating diabetes and we are praying for her to survive this attack. How can she survive without her drugs and the special food she eats? These kidnappers should set her free,” he said.
