Yuletide: Group tasks FG on southeast security situation

Ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the federal government has been urged to enhance its security strategies in the southeast.

Ambassador Festus Emmanuel Okpara, chairman of Ihitenansa Development Union, Abuja branch, expressed that the ongoing security situation, adversely impacting the socio-political and economic progress of the country, is unlikely to improve without renewed intervention from the federal government.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, December 17, during the union’s end-of-year celebration, Okpara expressed regret that the region is poised to experience another decline in economic fortune, as fewer indigenes residing outside the region are expected to make the traditional journey home for the yuletide due to the uncertainties of the security architecture of the region.

Saying that the government should be concerned about youth restiveness in the region if the insecurity situation persists, Okpara noted: “Yes, the government is trying as we can all see. We have seen the efforts but they should be concerned about the youth.

“I believe that the youths are showing great understanding now but we should know that if it takes too long to manifest, things can quickly change.

“If unemployment is aggressively addressed and the youths are meaningfully engaged, we will see that our problems as a country would have been more than halfway solved.

“With what we are facing now, not many people will want to travel home to the East to celebrate the yuletide and we all know that that is one celebration that is almost a tradition.

“What does that translate to? Less economic activities, and less spread of wealth which in a way adds to poverty.

“In summary, if the security challenges are addressed, economic activities must naturally pick up. No one is happy with what is currently happening there right now.

“I urge President Tinubu to take a second look at the security situation in the East for the good of the region and the country.”

Nevertheless, he encouraged the people of the region, especially the youths, to be patient and allow the new government time to implement its policies and programs aimed at addressing the numerous challenges facing the country.

“I want to implore Nigerians and our youths in particular to be more patient and give the government time for what they are doing to manifest.

“They should remember that nothing can be achieved in an atmosphere of rancour and that is why patience is important.”

The Welfare Secretary of the association, Victor Ikem, Agugoesi, in his plea, urged the aggrieved youths who are tarnishing the region’s reputation with kidnappings and other crimes to reconsider their actions.

He added: “When the stories from the region are about kidnappings and incessant killings, how investors would be attracted to the region with all the negative perceptions?

“My advice is that it is time to be practical and think about the future and economic survival of our region and the country at large”.

The legal practitioner, nevertheless, emphasized the importance for the government to guarantee that the palliatives introduced to alleviate the hardships of Nigerians due to the economic decisions reach their intended recipients.

He said: “The government should please ensure that the promised palliatives get to the common people and not end up as political tools like before.”

The association celebrates the yuletide with different programmes yearly as thanksgiving for the outgoing year.

Yuletide: Passengers lament air fares surge on local routes

    • Police ban fireworks, deploy officers

Air fares on domestic routes for Yuletide travels have increased astronomically forcing travellers to weigh options of patronizing other modes of transportation as bookings for intended trips between Lagos and Southeastern routes for Monday December 18, 2023 hit N171,500 on a one – way booking by one of the carriers.

Passengers are not only trapped in the difficulty of raising more funds to purchase their tickets ,they are also struggling to get seats aboard the aircraft as most seats have been taken by early booking.

Investigations by The Nation reveal that despite the harsh economic conditions more people still opt to patronise the air mode of travel because of insecurity, kidnapping and banditry on the highway.

On the portal of one of the local carriers, seats for afternoon flights for Monday have all been taken.

Besides the Lagos / Owerri route, proposed travel for the same Monday on the Lagos / Enugu rotation is going for between N171,500 and N266,800 for a one way trip.

On the same airline portal, most of the seats have been taken.

Fares for flights between Lagos / Anambra Airport for a one way trip are hovering between N143 , 000 and N266,800 for limited seats.

Booking travel for Monday December 18,2023, is going for N173,500 and N283, 000.

Flights between Lagos and Port Harcourt are going for between N143,000 and N238,000 for a one way booking.

While passengers lament the escalating price of air tickets, industry experts  attributed the spike to high cost of operations triggered by increasing price of aviation fuel , monopoly on routes , fewer aircrafts in the fleet of local carriers and the effects of demand and supply for air travel services.

Industry experts cite exploitation by operators who feed fat on the traffic on South East and South South routes, which command the highest fares.

Some passengers on the routes have called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority ,NCAA, to call the exploitative carriers to order.

Bookings on routes between Lagos and Abuja for one way trip for Monday December 18, 2023 range between N85,800 and N100,300.

Booking for the same day of travel between Lagos and Kano is going for between N100,300, N105,000 and N238200 respectively.

Aside from the astronomical increase in air fares,  citizens across the country also expressed concerns over the rising cost of living which they said will hugely affect the celebration of Christmas and New Year.

Many respondents who spoke to The Nation said they do not have plans to travel out of their states to mark the season as a result of insecurity, high cost of transportation and the general economic hardship in the country.

In Enugu, the residents blamed what they described as a bleak Christmas on the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government as well as the hike in the prices of goods and services.

While lamenting that life had become tougher for them as a result of the economic hardship in the country, the residents said their concentration  now was just to devise life-changing ways to cut costs and to meet their family obligations such as increased rents and children’s school fees.

A resident who identified himself as Chidi Ugwu, said he had planned that he and his family would travel home to Imo State, but had to suspend the journey due to economic hardship.

According to Ugwu, a businessman, he had to concentrate on saving for his house rent, which had been increased by his landlord as well as his children’s school fees which equally were increased.

“There’s no point traveling home for Christmas when you will come back to meet a heavy burden of school fees and house rent.

“Already, what we are spending on foodstuffs alone is sapping energy and pockets.

“As I am talking to you now, I don’t even know how to provide even a fowl for a family of six including myself and my wife,” he said.

Similar view was expressed by some residents of Kaduna who spoke with our correspondent.  They said they would have loved to travel to their home states for the celebration of the festivities, but jettisoned the idea because of  economic and security challenges.

Mr Mike Ayegba a Kaduna based federal civil servant and native of Benue state said, “honestly, I would have loved to travel home with my family. In fact, I can tell you that, I have not missed the celebrations of Christmas at home for many years now, but this time, ‘e get as e be oh’.

“Before, when I fill my vehicle with N11,000 worth of fuel, it will take me to Benue and I will even be left with like a quarter tank to take me round town for a few days. Now, to fill that tank, I need like N35,000. Meaning that, I have to buy N70,000 worth of fuel to take me and my family home and back. This is aside foodstuffs that we need to take along and money that I will need to give my mother and family members at home. Then, how much is my salary?

“So, if you put all of these together, you will just advise yourself that it is not profitable to travel home for Christmas at this material time, especially when you remember that, as you come back in January, you are coming to pay the  children’s school fees.”

To Mrs Mary Augustine, there are many Christmases to celebrate ahead. “So, if we cannot make it home this time, we will go when the economy improves.”

She said, “initially when my husband came back home sometimes last week and told me that we are not traveling to the East for Christmas, I thought he was joking and when I realized he meant it, I was angry with him, but when he explained the expenses involved to me, I also reasoned with him, that it is better to send money to our parents at home and manage ourselves here in Kaduna.”

On his part, Mr Sunday Martins said he will travel to his Kogi village by all means, even if it means joining a night bus which according to him is cheaper.

His words: “My wife and the children are in the village, I am the only one hustling here, so I have to go home and meet them to celebrate the Christmas and New Year. Even if it is a night bus, I will join and go home to NBTE with my people.”

Less than two weeks to Christmas, the streets in Imo State are dry, as residents are complaining of cost of living.

A beer parlour operator  at Mere Street, In Owerri Municipal Council, Mrs Celine Okoro lamented  that even prices of drinks have skyrocketed. She said a bottle of medium stout is now sold at N900.

“Nobody knows what is happening in the country, I don’t know what this country is turning into and where we are heading to with this rising cost of living. It is becoming very difficult for the poor man and their families to survive,” she added.

When The Nation visited the departure terminals of some popular interstate transporters, it was discovered that travellers, who used to pay between N11,500 and N12,500 for a one way trip during the off-season, are now paying between N26,000 and N33,500  representing over 100 percent increase.

An official of one of the popular transport companies who pleaded anonymity,  said that the cost was as a result of the hike in petroleum products.

Some other respondents said they  may not even be travelling home due to insecurity,

A 200 level student, of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri who gave his name as Chukwuemeka, said he prefers to stay behind than travel home due to insecurity.

“We come from the volatile areas of Imo state, it is better to celebrate Christmas alive staying behind than going home where movement is restricted.”

Residents of Abuja who want to spend their holidays away from the hustling and the bustling in the capital city will have to pay through their noses to get to their destination due to the astronomical hike in transport fares.

Our correspondent visited major parks to assess the situation.

The Chairman at Utako motor park, Mamud Ibrahim said the increase in transport fares is due to the hike in the price of fuel.

Ibrahim also outlined challenges transporters face on the road especially during festive seasons due to insecurity.

He said: “We are facing so many challenges, bad roads, road safety, insecurity and others. Transport fares have been hiked by as high as 100 percent. Destinations that usually cost 2 000 naira have now been hiked to 3500 naira excluding luggage and in some parks it is higher.

At the park, passengers complained about the increase in fares.

  • Buhari greets Nigerians at Christmas

*Says Nigeria had mixed blessings in 2018

    *Nigeria’s future bright – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday felicitated with Nigerians as they mark Christmas, which is the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

In his 2018 Christmas message to Nigerians, he also pointed out that Nigeria has had mixed blessings in the outgoing year.

The President was confident that what lies ahead for Nigeria is better than what it has gone through.

He said “I felicitate with all Nigerians, particularly our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s

“Like I have done in the last three Christmas messages to my fellow compatriots as a serving President, I believe this season is another opportunity to reflect on the imagery of the humble, symbolic and divine birth of a young child thousands of years ago in Bethlehem, Judea, and the message of hope, compassion, salvation, reconciliation, forgiveness and peace that Jesus Christ embodies and conveys.

“In 2018, Nigerians have had mixed blessings, typical of human beings.

“On the pleasant side, our economy has made significant progress since coming out from recession and our faithful implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

“Agricultural revolution has seen a vastly improved local production to the detriment of importation, while we have achieved surplus in our trade balance. Similarly, infrastructural deficit has been greatly reduced with significant improvements in roads, railways, aviation and power.

“In addition, we have not relented in the fight against corruption while the business environment has been improved through institutional reforms.

“On the downside, we have seen so many unnecessary deaths caused by violent clashes between neighbours, who ordinarily should complement and support one another.

“We cannot bring back the lives lost to floods, unfortunate fire disasters, road accidents, farmers/herders clashes and insurgency.

“But we can put back smiles on the faces of the grieving, the displaced and the troubled, if we show a little love and recommit ourselves to building relationships with those outside our ethnic, religious and socio-political divides.”

He urged Nigerians to exchange gifts, pray and visit loved ones as they celebrate Christmas.

The President also urged them to remember many others who cannot be with their families during the festive period.

He said “Our brave Armed Forces, and other security men and women who make incredible sacrifices to keep us safe, the aged, the sick, physically challenged persons, all deserve our goodwill in this season of love and sharing.

“Together we can show generosity to our neighbours and demonstrate the diversity that makes Nigeria unique – a land with a beautiful climate and vegetation, beaming with an energetic and creative youth population.” he said

Stressing that Nigeria’s future is bright, he said “We must not also forget that what lies ahead of us as a nation is better than whatever we must have experienced in the past.”

With general elections around the corner and heightened political activities across the country, he said that he has charged the security and law enforcement agencies to secure the sanctity of the ballot box and ensure that the outcome of the polls reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

“My avowed commitment to free, fair, credible and violence-free polls is not a ruse or yet another vain political promise. My word is my bond.

“It is a sworn declaration on the advancement of Nigeria, the future and safety of our young and unborn generations.

“Let us tell the world that, indeed, ‘‘something good’’ can come out from Nigeria. And it will happen, as we all team up to make it happen.” he said

  • Yuletide: Excessive food, alcohol causes heart attack – Expert warns

An Abuja based Cardiologist, Dr Ademola Aderinloye, has cautioned Nigerians against eating and drinking excessively during the Yuletide as this could lead to heart attack.

Aderinloye gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

He noted that factors such as emotional stress, anger, anxiety and sadness could increase the risk of having heart attack.

“It is important for Nigerians to eat and drink appropriately during this season.

“If it is not necessary to travel, they should remain at their stations so that they will not go through unnecessary stressful situations.

“In the course of my practice over the years, I have seen an increase in cases of people coming down with heart attack during the Yuletide.

“For most of these people, engaging in stressful conditions like travelling long distances had increased their risk of having heart attack,’’ he warned.

Aderinloye said: “Some people put themselves under undue pressure to make more money to enable them spend excessively during the season.

“But they will end up spending what is meant to be their season of joy and celebration in hospital bed.”

NAN reports that heart attack is a serious medical emergency in which the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a blood clot.

It could be life-threatening and may seriously damage the heart muscles.

  • Yuletide: Travellers lament fare hike

Air travellers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja have lamented the hike in price of air tickets by airlines ahead of the Christmas celebration.

Some of them who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said they were not surprised because they knew it had always been the case during yuletide seasons.

Mr Obiora Okeke, a businessman, said he was not surprised that flight ticket prices have soared considering the antecedents of airlines during festive periods.

He said the issue of fare hike would not stop unless alternative means of transport like modern train services and good roads were provided.

He also attributed the hike to the absence of efficient and viable domestic airlines in the country, adding that the airlines were struggling to survive.

“It is not surprising that we are paying higher fare this time because it has been the case in Nigeria during festive periods because the same thing happens even in road transport sector.

“The only way out is that government should continue with rail projects to provide alternative means of transportation for people.

“Aside that, we don’t have many viable domestic airlines and the few we have are struggling to survive,” he said.

Another traveller, Mrs Asabe Musa, said the airlines were taking undue advantage of people’s fears of road travels due to insecurity and bad roads.

Musa called on the government to do more to tackle security challenges that has made roads dangerous for the public in many parts of the country.

She also urged the government to pay more attention to railway to make it easy for people to travel.

According to NAN, the air fare has gone up by almost double of all the prices about few weeks ago.

Air fare on these routes charged by various airlines before now ranges from N19,000 to N41,000 depending on the airline and time of booking.

A check by NAN on the price list of the various airlines revealed that they now charge between N36,000 and N70,000 on economy and N70,000 to N90,000 on business class depending on the time and destination.

For Air Peace, its tickets were sold between N42,600 and N70,000 on Abuja-Lagos route as at Saturday and in spite of the high price of ticket, only its evening flight had some available seats as at Saturday morning.

Arik sold its ticket ranging from N35,000 to NN46,000 on all routes while Max Air tickets sold for between N40,000 and N70,000 on Lagos-Abuja route, N30,000 to N60,000 for Abuja-Kano route and N65,000 on Abuja-Port Harcourt route.

Other airlines like Aero Contractors, Dana Air, Medview sold their tickets between N44,188 to N52,000; N34,200 to N79,200 and N33,748 to N54,646 respectively.

Road travellers also complained about hike in transport fare.

  • Yuletide: FAAN assures passengers of safety

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)  has assured passengers and other airport users travelling during the Yuletide of adequate security.

FAAN disclosed this in statement by its General Manager, Corporation Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu.

According to Yakubu, the authority has beefed up security at all airports, especially at international terminals in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano.

This is just as FAAN urged passengers to get to the airports early to conclude all check in procedures.

The statement reads: “As Yuletide approaches, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to notify air travelers and other airport users that her network of airports across the country are fully prepared for the usual surge in passenger traffic that is the norm during the season.

“In preparation for the season and beyond, we have beefed up security at all airports, especially the major international gateways in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano.

“Also, we are improving on our facilities and infrastructure to ensure maximum comfort for all airport users.

“Recently, a brand new international terminal was commissioned for use at the Port Harcourt International Airport. A similar facility was also commissioned in Abuja on Thursday December 20, 2018.

“At our premier airport, the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, the VIP lounge has been renovated to enhance passenger comfort, the carousels are working optimally, amidst other facilities upgrade currently on going.

“The stories are similar at all other airports, as the Authority has put in place facilities, procedures and  systems to ensure maximum comfort, safety and security of airport users during this season and beyond.

“FAAN will like to use this opportunity to appeal to passengers to please get to the airports early to conclude all check-in procedures in good time, so as to avoid the experience of missing their flights. This is important because of the heavy passenger traffic that is usually the experience around this time and also due to ongoing construction works around the Lagos and Abuja airports.”
