Yuletide and the stars of a twisted firmament

The medley of pulsating melodies, riding the tranquilizing breeze from the ocean, had soaked up the swanky ambience at the emerging Eko Atlantic City tonight until youthful Darey Art Alade took over the band-stand.

The celebrant, General T Y Danjuma and his wife, Daisy, were on the dance-floor of lush velvet, cheered on by a sizable number of the nation’s aristocracy gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of unquestionably one of Nigeria’s surviving military icons.

As transmitted by Channels Television to million of viewers at home and the Diaspora via the satellite, musician Darey Alade chose to stir the revelry up further with a number outside his regular hip-hop staple –  ”Lady” by Afro Beat icon, Fela Kuti.

With T. Y. now bobbing softly to the ability – well maybe to the intensity dignifying – of an octogenarian, and dazzling Daisy shuffling regally to the admiration of guests, those ordinarily given to the sybaritic among beholders must have hankered for more.

But certainly not those capable of precise interpretation of political semiotics. They definitely would not have found that Darey’s choice of song amusing at all.  Was it to taunt? Or was it to tantalize the new octogenarian? The fundamentalists among them may, in fact, likely feel violated.

Those familiar with the verses of Nigeria’s difficult history of the 70s under martial rule would certainly find it hard to believe if told that, at the start of “Lady” that night,  the ancient gladiator from Taraba himself did not momentarily feel haunted by Fela’s svelte apparition.

Flowing Agbada would conceal a lot. So, we might have been denied the opportunity of ogling the involuntary buckling of the knees or the twitch of the vein in the temple of a suddenly nervous General.

Danjuma was head of the army in 1977 when Fela suffered perhaps the worst brutality in his career of protest music. His then current fast-tempo song, Zombie, thought to mock soldiers, bred deep animus in the barracks. He earlier peppered them with “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” with the punchline:

My people sef dey fear too much, we fear for things we no see, we fear the air around us, we fear to fight for justice, we fear to fight for happiness, so policeman go slap your face you no talk, army man go whip your yanch you go look like donkey.”

So, a little traffic offense committed by a member of Fela’s entourage offered a perfect excuse for the full weight of the Nigerian Army to be visited on Fela’s “Kalakuta Republic”, with the enactment of mayhem and terror lasting several hours involving troops from nearby Abalti barracks in Lagos.

Never in living memory had the full armada of the Nigerian army been ranged against a single individual, entirely choking the Moshalashi neighborhood where he was holed up.

Fela never truly recovered from that brutal punishment.

Following the national uproar that greeted the atrocity, the army under Danjuma’s command cynically feigned ignorance, famously blaming “Unknown Soldiers”. That affair has since sneaked into Nigeria’s political folklore and today remains an enduring puzzle with the victims unhealed and the masterminds unchastised.

Without taking anything away from the enigma T Y continues to embody in Nigeria’s history, let it however be stated that what Fela stood for is subversive of such.

So, only stark political illiterates – those ignorant of history or contemptuous of its sensibilities  – could have found themselves committing that sort of indiscretion by Dare, otherwise a remarkable R & B singer with enchanting voice. Invoking Fela’s name at a T Y gathering or echoing his baritone at his feasting is a big taboo indeed. More like the abominable incongruity of a serpent in a well.

What makes Dare’s gaffe even more striking is that he is the scion of Highlife music impresario, Modupe Art Alade, who bestrode the nation’s entertainment landscape in the 70s and the 80s. A period that coincided with Fela’s own momentous moments in history.

Well, Darey could be pardoned, for he most likely was oblivious of the dangerous territory into which he was trespassing. Such naivety is only reflective of the sort of diet he and a great many other contemporary pop stars were weaned. Perhaps, the easy explanation for this would be the thoughtless official policy which, at the dawn of 21st century and a new millennium, abrogated the teaching of history in our schools. But without understanding the past, how are the kids supposed to develop a sense of good or bad, differentiate heroes from villains?

The education curriculum since unleashed only appears to be succeeding in churning out a new generation without social conscience and whose grasp of otherwise critical social issues is, at best, shallow. Their sense of discernment is abysmal. To them, taking more than a passing interest in the nation’s ongoing political engagement is to be prudish.

So, more and more, the country is confronted by a generation of millennials with sparse knowledge of national history but are prodigious experts in, say, the art and science of European league, with near encyclopedic memory of all the gossips involving soccer celebs of a foreign land.

But their loquacity soon grows dumb when the conversation switches to the local league.

Such vacuity will also be seen in the new pop music culture that tends to expressly valorize cant. This manic obsession with opioids, booze, bums and boobs. We not only hear it in Davido’s explicit songs but also see it in his anarchic lifestyle preference. Our eardrums are constantly assaulted with the rants of “30 billion for account o”.  Recently, we saw how three of his hangers-on died in rapid succession of substance abuse.

Why we should worry more is because celebrity confers huge powers. The grievous impact on the young ones with impressionable minds who look up to these pop stars as role models could, therefore, only be imagined.

Davido’s contemporary, Burma Boy (Damini Ogulu), is not to be envied this Yuletide season. If Darey invoked Fela before a wrong audience, the grandson of music aficionado, Benson Idonije, once contemplated the Afro Beat immortal in wrong costume. He had caused a stir by appearing  at a memorial concert for Fela in Lagos in white pants. Though “Abami Eda” was famed for granting press interview in his lair in his briefs, not a few however considered Burma Boy’s stunt offensive to Fela’s cherished memory.  Sadly, the usually exuberant lad would spend last weekend in a dingy cell in Lagos in company of hardened criminals captured by SARS after weeks of playing hide-and-seek over alleged armed robbery. It is obviously a humbling experience for the dancehall star popular for his “Run My Race” song. Now, he surely needs more than stamina to finish the ongoing “race” with the law.

While the young man is presumed innocent for now, however, the nature of crime he is accused of is a pointer to the sort of tumultuous life he seems to live.

A fellow singer (or maybe a rival), Mr. 2Kay, was mobbed after a show at Eko Hotel and lost valuables said to be worth several millions. Claiming to have been openly threatened that night by Burma Boy shortly before the attack, the victim easily pointed finger at him as the mastermind. He only secured bail on Monday while the trial continues.

This can hardly be good news for our entertainment industry.

Re: Treaty-master and a nation at the nadir

Thanks Louis for the thought-provoking  piece on Professor Akin Oyebode. I met Akin for the first time in Toronto in Canada as a Doctoral candidate in the University of Toronto (yes, the famous Toronto but the original one). Akin was in the neighbouring York University. Even then, he was already an accomplished  Lecturer  in University of Lagos. We had a robust assemblage of patriotic Nigerians there. Amongst these were Prof Julius Ihonvbere,  former Secretary to the Edo State Government and Presidential Adviser; Prof T. Bande now Nigerian Permanent  Representative  in U.N;  Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, ex Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja and Sokoto State University, and several others. Akin Oyebode was our rallying-point. He gave the Keynote speech at the Nigerian Day in Toronto  in 1982.  A very lucid address that was a critique of the Nigerian  condition  then. Unfortunately, 35 years later, nothing has changed, though some of us have also become part of the governing  class!!!

I join millions in wishing him many more years of worthy service to humanity.

    Re: A Commodore’s last voyage

Thanks a million for that little peck on Bode George. Not that it would have bothered me if such individual becomes the Chair of PDP because they thoroughly deserved it. What is annoying is what you rightly described as the ‘obscenity of self-adulation’ by somebody whose presence will only attract scorn in the gathering of true ‘Omoluabis’ in Yorubaland. Didn’t he admit he collected $30k during Jonathan’s single candidate convention when each delegate still went home with $10k in their pockets? Now, he’s wailing about ‘vote buying and selling’ which his party used to ruin Nigeria for 16 years. He can tell his ‘Omoluabi’ tale to the marines. He’s a mariner, abi? Have a great evening.

    Soyinka’s commendation

As a contemporary and one who knew intimately Louis Odion way back at the Federal Poly, Ado Ekiti, I attest he is quite deserving of the public commendations from the revered Professor Wole Soyinka and the rare honour of being featured in a new book by the Nobel laureate. At about the age of 17, Odion co-established Cable Communication with Olaitan Ibiyemi at the Polytechnic. The signs of a great writer were all over him. We knew this. His writing drew lecturers and other non-teaching staff to the publication board of Cable even when it was deemed student journalism on campus.

I am really proud of him today.

Xmax: FRSC deploys 36,000 marshals nationwide

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 36,000 regular and special marshals nationwide for the end of year special patrols operation.

Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi ordered for the deployment Tuesday.

Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, stated that 795 patrol cars, 204 motorcycles, 106 ambulances and 21 tow trucks will also be deployed for the exercise.

Code-named Operation Zero Tolerance with the theme, “Right to Life on the Highway, Not Negotiable’’, the exercise kicks off on Wednesday and will run until Jan. 15.

Kazeem said the operations were targeting free flow of traffic, drastic reduction in accidents, and prevention of accident-related deaths across the country, among others, during the period.

He identified the operational strategies to include establishment of 13 Help Areas and nine camps on accident-prone corridors to cater for accident victims.

His words, “Other strategies are quick response time to distress calls, 24-hour visibility along critical corridors, uninterrupted motorised patrol, day-time route lining, traffic control and deployment of 201 mobile courts.

“The Corps would also activate high alert on internal and external medical facilities to intervene in case of crashes, undertake aerial surveillance and purposeful synergy with other security agencies.”

According to him, the FRSC boss has also ordered strict enforcement of traffic laws with focus on speeding, dangerous driving, use of phone while driving, overloading, passenger manifest violations, among others.

“Management staff, Zonal Commanding Officers, Zonal Heads of Operations and other senior officers of the Corps have been massively deployed to monitor the exercise along critical corridors.

“Commanding Officers have been directed to closely collaborate with sister security agencies to ensure safe and secured end-of-year patrol operations.

“Their involvement is to provide security support and to check the activities of recalcitrant offenders, dissidents and other anti-FRSC elements,’’ the spokesman said.

Kazeem added that a Special Monitoring Team would be deployed to keep an eye on all corridors and ensure strict compliance to the Corps Marshal’s directives.

The special monitoring, he explained, would provide first-hand information to the FRSC boss on happenings in the field as it relates to the operations.

While reiterating the FRSC’s appeal for cooperation by the motoring public, Kazeem urged road users to make use of the Corps’ helpline (122) in the event of accidents and other emergencies.

Fuel Scarcity: Edo to clamp down on errant petrol stations

As part of measures to prevent the hoarding of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) during the yuletide, the Edo State Government has said that it would commence monitoring of marketers and petrol stations across the state from Wednesday, December 20, 2017, and will shut errant stations.

The Commissioner for Oil, Gas & Solid Minerals, Hon. Joseph Ugheoke, gave the warning in a chat with journalists at the Government House in Benin City, Edo State capital, on Tuesday.

“People in the state should not engage in panic buying as there is no justifiable reason for doing so. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has assured the state government that it would supply enough products to the state to address the shortage.”

He explained that the state government has placed a ban on the sale of PMS in jerry cans, adding that notice has been sent to managers of petrol stations not to sell PMS of more than 20 litres to buyers with jerry cans.

“We are aware of the reduced allocation of PMS to Edo State. The shortage of PMS is not peculiar to Edo State, as other states in the country are also recording similar shortage in supply though there is no record of scarcity in some states,” the commissioner said.

“The ministry has been reliably informed by the NNPC that the quantity of PMS supplied to Edo State will adequately serve the needs of users during the yuletide. There is no need for panic buying by motorists across the state.”

Ugheoke said the state government through the Ministry of Oil, Gas and Solid Minerals, is putting measures in place to prevent some marketers from exploiting the people by hoarding the product to create artificial scarcity and make excessive gains to the detriment of the people.

“The queues we have been seeing at petrol stations across the state were caused by the fears over the planned strike by members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). But with the suspension of the strike on Monday, loading of petroleum products has commenced and our staff will be going round to monitor the supply and dispensing of PMS to motorists at the petrol stations,” he said.

According to him, officials of the ministry will ensure that petrol stations that were supplied PMS, dispense the product to buyers based on the regulated price of N145 per litre and any station hoarding the product will be shut down.

Yuletide: Be wary of mischief makers

The Police in Enugu State have warned residents of the state to be wary of activities of thieves and fraudsters among other mischief makers during the Yuletide.

The Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO ) in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, who gave the warning in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu, said unsolicited text messages from unknown numbers or unknown people should be disregarded.

Amaraizu disclosed that some robbers disguised as beggars near traffic lights and bus stops on major roads to prey on unsuspecting members of the public and dispossess them  of their valuables.

“Police wish to inform members of the public that its attention through intelligence information has been drawn to some antics of suspected mischief-makers who usually hang around traffic lights and bus stops along major roads under the guise of begging for  arms from unsuspecting members of the public.

“Further information gathered revealed that these groups of suspected mischief-makers deploy the antics of wrecking havoc on vehicles and persons while in traffic hold up as they usually divert attention of their targeted victim or victims with their conspirators,”he said.

He said criminals would, among other antics, divert their victims’ attention in order to snatch valuables such as phones, ipads, bags as well money inside the vehicles of their victims.

The PPRO also advised residents of Enugu to ensure that traffic jams and queues did not serve as buffer zones for criminals now on the prowl.

According to him, police are working with security operatives to detect and arrest suspected miscreants in the society to face the wrath of the law.

“To this end, members of the public are advised to be security conscious and to promptly report to security operatives, nearest police stations and outposts any threat to public peace in their in area for necessary action,’’ he said.

  • In this season of Yuletide

Another Yuletide season is around the corner and activities of miscreants are on the rise. Thus, it is evident that government needs to be reminded of its main duty which is the protection of lives and property.                                                                                                                Ember months is characterised by rise in ritual activities, kidnapping, stealing by pretence, incessant killings and all forms of unlawful activities with the aim of making money through dubious means.                                       At this time, many who are unable to meet their yearly target will seize the opportunity  of getting things done either by crook or by hook in order to attract societal praise and attention.   Here, the government needs to empower the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the other law enforcement agencies to assist in its major duty of protecting lives and property while the youths need to be discouraged from excessive use of bangers (knock out) to scare innocent ladies and deprive them of their belongings.

Finally, I appeal to all, ladies particularly, to be security conscious in this period. Season Greetings!

  • Trader to spend Yuletide in prison for stealing

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State yesterday sentenced a 49-year-old man, Chidi John, to one year in jail for stealing a bag containing recharge cards worth N225,000 and N25,000- cash

Magistrate O. Sule-Amzat, after listening to the prosecution and defence attorneys convicted and sentenced John of 16, Nhdshe Close, Otukpo in Benue, to one year imprisonment.

The convict had at his arraignment pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing brought against him.

Sule-Amzat held that the convict should serve out the one year jail term without an option of fine.

Earlier, the prosecuting Sergeant, Lucky Ihiehie, had told court that the convict committed the offence in March at 21, Church Avenue, Mile 12, Lagos State.

Ihiehie said the complainant, Miss Ngozi Okwudilli, reported the case at Mile 12 Police Post.

“The complainant sells recharge cards at the above address and met the convict early this year when he came to Lagos and also tried to befriend her.

“The complainant said the convict trades in yam and he came to her house in March to introduce his business to her,” Ihiehie said.

Ihiehie said the complainant went to prepare food at the back of her house for the convict but by the time she returned into the main building, she could not find him.

Yuletide: FRSC cautions drivers against drunk-driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ), on Friday, cautioned motorists against drunk- driving during the yuletide, which it said usually, resulted in road crashes.

The FRSC said that many lives had been lost, especially during Christmas as a result of alcohol consumption by drivers, adding that it was collaborating with other stakeholders against the practice.

Mrs. Dayo Odeleye, the Head of Operations, who represented Mr Vincent Jack, the Sector Commander, Ondo State, gave this warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after an ‘Ember Month Flag Off’ in Ore.

NAN reports that the programme, which was tagged, “Right to Life not Negotiable’ was organised for commercial drivers and other road users in Ore.

Jack also urged road users to ensure that their vehicles were always in good condition and that they should cooperate with FRSC officials on the highways during and after the ember months.

“Road accidents around this time of the year are caused by human errors, especially drivers, who drink alcohol before setting out on their journeys.

“We are making serious efforts with stakeholders to rid-off alcohol sellers at motor parks for the safety of lives and property on our highways,” Jack said.

Earlier, Mr Phiilip Ozonnandi, the Unit Commander in Ore, had urged drivers to desist from the use of expired tyres and speeding, which he said were major causes of road crashes.

The commander also said that the FRSC personnel would be deployed to the Benin-Ore expressway to arrest erring motorists, who violated traffic rules throughout the festive period.

“We can no longer fold our hands and watch loss of lives and property because of speeding.

“I urge drivers to install speed limiter in their vehicles, which is more useful in the reduction of speed to save lives and property,’’ Ozonnandi said.

Meanwhile, Prince George Adenikinju, the Caretaker Chairman, Odigbo Local Government Area, also admonished drivers to always sensitise their members on road use and good conditions vehicles.

In his response, Mr Sulimon Maruf, the Zonal Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ore Unit, who spoke on behalf of commercial drivers, urged his members to adhere strictly to traffic rules.

He also said that the FRSC effort was to ensure that drivers do not end up in hospitals or mortuaries, which could put their families in disarray.

In attendance at the event included representatives of transport unions including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACCOMORAN).

Also present were the FRSC Marshals, the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), officials of the Department of State Security (DSS) and Public Complaints Commission.

  • Airtel ’s campaign relives love, mother-child bond

Airtel ’s campaign relives love, mother-child bond

Airtel Nigeria has relived the inestimable love and bond between mother and child in its newest campaign.

In the advert themed: ‘How We Mada 10x Anyhow’, the telco captures the fact that mothers are overly predisposed to desiring the best for their children and how they view prayers as the best gift and carrier of blessings they can offer their beloved as they grow older.

The new campaign by Airtel, which was a call to customers to express themselves more during the yuletide season, featured renowned Nollywood actress, Idowu Philips aka Iya Rainbow and her son, Segun, having a long day conversation on phone.

In the Ads, Iya Rainbow discovered that her youngest son Segun far away in the city has sent her a Christmas hamper overflowing with goodies that gladdens her heart. Knowing that her phone had recently been recharged with Airtel SmartRecharge – assumedly remotely by Segun himself – she called Tunde at the earliest sign of daybreak and pours her most moving prayers on Segun, never minding the ordeal this puts on Segun from dawn to dusk.

A super reprisal at the end of the ad which has been touted as one of the most engaging twist of the commercial was when Mama breaks the 4th wall with her prayer and begins to engage the announcer of the commercial with her prayer, demonstrating the power of Airtel SmartRecharge.

Recall that Airtel recently launched 10x SmartRecharge that gives 10 times the value of customers’ recharge as data and calls to all networks. The bundle which is open to new and existing Airtel customers and can be enjoyed by simply recharging using the special code: *220*PIN#.

According to the telco, with SmartRecharge customers get great value for both calls and data in one single convenient recharge. In addition to the 10 times value, the package also gives customers extra data value. For instance, a recharge of N100, gives N500 for calls and N500 for data while N500 gives N2000 for calls, N3000 for data & extra N3000 for data.

The Chief Commercial Officer of Airtel Nigeria, Mr Ahmad Mohkles, said the new package themed #DoAnyHow is to give more freedom and reward to the customers.

“As a customer-centric brand, we, at Airtel Nigeria are committed to making life better for all our customers by offering products and services that suit everyone. 10x Airtel Smart Recharge is just one of the new packages introduced to give our customers more freedom to connect with their family and friends”, he said.

On the unique benefits of Airtel 10x Smart Recharge, Mr. Mohkles explained “50% of voice value will be available to call all networks and 50% is available to call Airtel lines while unused bundle value can be rolled over before the validity expires”.

The CCO added that value is offered in bundle accounts for calls and data usage.

Airtel through the plan is also encouraging customers to connect more with their family and friends with the rewards on the package.
