  • Zamfara ambush as last straw

    Zamfara ambush as last straw

    • By Kabir Fagge Ali

Sir: It is a known fact that security personnel, at all times, are ready to pay the supreme price, whenever they are in line of action. Their patriotism and unrelenting effort in tackling insecurity is partly why we sleep comfortably at night.

Worrisome however, are reports that our gallant troops, who protect our territorial integrity and lives, are slaughtered like guinea pigs, during terrorists’ ambushed attacks.

Last Saturday was a black day as troops of the Nigerian Army, alongside two Police officers, were killed around Danjibga axis in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in an ambush.

The attack on the troops by bandits is in retaliation of several attacks launched by troops on different bandit camps in the state, leading to the death of numerous terrorists and destruction of their camps and ‘operational’ motorcycles, among others.

Zamfara State has been battling with insecurity for nearly a decade. The Nigerian military however, must be commended for leading the war to end banditry in the troubled north-central state, and also, general insecurity in the country.

But winning the war demands our collective support. The federal government, the military, other security agencies and citizens must join forces and come up with a portent strategy for tackling terrorists and other criminal elements, holding our dear nation to ransom.

That is why having a multifaceted approach to the fight against insecurity is imperative. Firstly, the military’s intelligence-gathering system must be enhanced. It will help in quickly identifying the movements and plans of terrorists and other armed groups.

Strengthening collaboration between various security agencies and investing in technology, such as surveillance and communication equipment, are also vital.

Again, there is the need to also equip our troops with modern and sophisticated ammunition, even as the government must allocate adequate resources to ensure that the military has the tools and knowledge needed to adapt to evolving security threats. This will also help its troops navigate the challenging terrains often exploited by insurgent groups, during gunfire battles.

Community engagement remains a linchpin in the fight against insecurity. Local populations can play a pivotal role in providing credible intelligence, as they possess invaluable knowledge about their communities.

Establishing trust between the military and communities is paramount for building a united front against insurgency, equally. Addressing the root causes of violent conflicts in the country is another thing that cannot be overemphasized.

Beneficial socio-economic policies and sound development initiatives, focused on providing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, can help to dissuade our youths from being recruited into armed and terror groups.

By addressing the underlying issues, the government can reduce the appeal of insurgency, banditry, robbery and oil theft, among other crimes. And marginalized populations will not find cause to take to criminalities and heinous vices for survival.

Furthermore, international collaboration is crucial in tackling cross-border security threats. Zamfara’s proximity to neighbouring countries should necessitate coordinated efforts to prevent armed groups from exploiting regional vulnerabilities.

In the same vein, collaborative intelligence sharing, joint patrols, and diplomatic initiatives can contribute to a more robust defence against insurgencies.

In summary, curbing the spate of ambush attacks on troops in Zamfara and other states afflicted by terrorism and banditry requires a holistic strategy, combining intelligence, technology, community engagement, and socioeconomic development.

Let’s hope that those saddled with piloting the affairs of our dear nation summon the political will to do the needful, this time around.

Zamfara: Coalition praises Supreme Court for upholding democratic processes

The court upheld the election of Lawal as governor on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, a member of the group, Muhammad Sadiq said the judgement has reinforced the trust placed on the judiciary.

This verdict not only upholds the democratic will of the citizens but also reinforces the faith in the judicial system as a pillar of justice and fairness.

Zamfara Govt Recovers 50 ‘Stolen’ Vehicles

The Zamfara State Government said it has recovered about 50 operational vehicles allegedly taken away by the immediate past governor of the state, Bello Matawalle.

Briefing journalists on Thursday in Gusau, Sani Sambo, a spokesperson for Governor Dauda Lawal said the action followed the judgement by a Federal High Court in Sokoto last Friday.

He said due process was carefully followed to recover the vehicles from the Gusau and Maradun residences of the former governor who earlier denied having possession of any government property when he was leaving office as governor.

Sambo stated that the Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration is doing everything possible to bring about the desired development in the state but not to witch hunt or project anyone in a bad light.

When Lawal took over power as governor of Zamfara on May 29, 2023, the controversy about stolen operational vehicles at the Government House Gusau and siphoning of public funds set in, and security agencies raided the two residences of Matawalle in Gusau and Maradun local governments where some vehicles were recovered.

The former governor quickly secured a court order restraining the state government from such action, pending the determination of the court’s decision on the matter.

According to the state government, the court in Sokoto dismissed the former governor’s suit against it.

An Aide to Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Alhaji Yahaya Yari said the recent Appeal Court judgment will not discourage the governor from executing developmental projects.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the appeal court sitting in Abuja recently declared the March 18, Zamfara governorship election inconclusive.

Yari, a Special Adviser, said that the judgment would not affect the good governance policies initiated by Lawal.

He said, “As we all know, the rescue mission policies of our administration came to change the condition of Zamfara to a better position.

“We have nothing to worry about the judgement, because we are here with the mandate of the people and I believe that people of the state still have confidence in our administration.

    Banditry: Zamfara’s elites deepening silence

    • By Ibrahim Mustapha

Sir: Whatever might have fuelled banditry in Zamfara State, whether it is poverty, illegal mining or government’s inability to manage farmers/herders crises, the state has become a Golgotha due to the frequent attacks by rapacious bandits.

The state is always in the news for bad reasons. The abduction and imposition of taxes by bandits is no longer news. These audacious bandits have resorted to kidnapping en masse. Evidence is the recent abduction of over 100 villagers in well-coordinated attacks. The bandits attack, kill and steal anything they can lay their hands on, from the poor and helpless peasant farmers in porous communities of the state.

Zamfara State is blessed with people of timber and calibre; men who have carved a niche for themselves in various aspects of human development. In the military, we have General Aliyu Gusau (Rtd). The state is also home to Colonel Bala Mande (Rtd), Senator Saidu Dansadau, Senator Sahabi Anka, Kabiru Marafa, Abdul’aziz Yari, Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi to mention but a few. With these strong pillars or personalities, one expected united and conscious efforts by them towards bringing lasting peace in the troubled state. Alas, this has not been the case.

These elders who ought to use their influence to fight the menace are obsessed with how to get power.

In 2019, there was an intense of power play between the camp of former governor of the state, Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Kabiru Marafa. As a consequence, the ruling party lost all their seats through court litigations. Governor Bello Matawalle who became governor through the court had, at the tail end of his tenure, a frosty relationship with his deputy, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau over his defection to APC. Their feud lingered into the general elections in which Matawalle lost. Even after Matawalle lost the gubernatorial election and President Tinubu appointed him as minister, the state has still not known peace. With the appeal court quashing the victory of Governor Dauda Dare and ordering re-run election in three local governments, another chapter of dirty political struggle has been opened.

It worries every right thinking mind the deafening silence and lacklustre attitude being displayed by the elites when the state faces existential threat from blood-thirsty bandits. Zamfara is dangerously drifting into abyss. It is high time the political class stopped politicizing insecurity and embraced various options available to nip into bud the persistent attacks by bandits in the state. The political class should close their ranks and work collectively for the return of peace and progress to the state.

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has pledged to remain focused in his bid to execute development projects in the state, in spite of the Appeal Court judgment which declared the March 18 election as inconclusive.

Lawal said this when he addressed a group of party faithful in Gusau shortly after his return from Abuja.

“We have nothing to worry about, we known that the people voted for us before and they are still ready to vote for us again.

He said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would emerge victorious, even if the rerun was to cover the entire state.

Also speaking, the state PDP acting Chairman, Alhaji Muktar Lugga lauded the party faithful for coming out en masse to welcome the governor.

He said the rally was demonstration of love and loyalty to the state administration.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had declared as inconclusive, the governorship election that was held in Zamfara on March 18.

In a unanimous decision, the three-member panel led by Justice Oyebisi Folayemi, and supported by Justice Cordelia Ifeoma Jombo-Ofo and Justice Sybil Nwaka Gbagi nullified the return of Governor Lawal as the winner of the governorship poll.
