PDP will not fail followers – Bafarawa

A former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Atahiru Bafarawa, said the Peoples’ Democratic Party ( PDP ) would not afford to fail its numerous followers at the Dec. 9 national convention.

Bafarawa stated this in Sokoto on Sunday while receiving an aspirant of national chairmanship of the party, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, who was on a campaign visit to the state.

He said that it was unfortunate that the party encountered crisis after its convention in Port Harcourt in 2016, noting that the party was on “intensive care” at that time.

“Now that the party is out of the intensive care unit, there is need to put the party in order.

“We stand at risk if we don’t put our house in order. We will fail our millions of followers who are in support of this great party.

“Honestly, what we can do is to unite ourselves and pray to God to guide us to choose leaders who will lead our party,” Bafarawa said.

The former governor said that the North-West was yet to take any decision on who to support for the national chairmanship position, noting that the people would make the decision.

He described Dokpesi as a man of wisdom and experience, the criteria needed by the man who lead PDP as chairman.

“We believe that God chooses leaders, and I know that you are qualified to aspire for any position in this party and country,” the former governor told the aspirant.

Earlier, Dokpesi had said that he knew that Bafarawa was a man who loved and always wanted the best for his people, state and the country.

At a meeting with state executive members and convention delegates of the party at the Secretariat, he said he was in the state to seek support of party members for his aspiration to lead PDP.

Dokpesi pledged to work with the state executive committee and members to return PDP to power in Sokoto in 2019.

  • REC: Senate rejects Zamfara nominee, confirms two

REC: Senate rejects Zamfara nominee, confirms two

The Senate on Thursday rejected the nominee from Zamfara, Mr Ahmad Mahmud, as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

The upper chamber, however, confirmed the nominees from Lagos State and Kebbi State, Dr Rufus Akeju and Dr Mahmuda Isah, respectively.

This followed the consideration of the report of the Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which was presented by its Chairman, Sen. Suleiman Nazif, at plenary.

Nazif said that the nominees appeared before the committee in May, 2017.

He said that after careful study of the nominees’ documents, the committee found those from Lagos and Kebbi suitable for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner, but had to step down that of Zamfara.

In his contribution, Sen. Adamu Aliero (APC-Kebbi) said that it was true that they initially had reservation on the nomination of the nominee from Kebbi, but that the issues were later resolved.

According to him, after due consultation with the relevant authorities in the state and other stakeholders, we resolved to allow the nomination. We are in support of his nomination.

Similarly, Sen. Kabiru Marafa (APC-Zamfara) said: “I don’t accept the statement that after careful deliberations and consultations, the nominee from Zamfara was rejected.

“With all sense of modesty, I am a critical stakeholder in Zamfara politics; nobody consulted me.

“These nominations are entirely the exclusive right of President Muhammadu Buhari and no other person.

“I respect the state governor and his views as to why he took some actions. At the same time, we are senators and by our oath, we are supposed to live above board.

“I was not consulted about this gentleman. I don’t see the sufficient reason for his rejection; I oppose his rejection completely for want of evidence,” Marafa said.

On his part Sen. Tijjani Kaura (APC-Zamfara) said that he was totally in support of the committee’s decision in rejecting the nominee.

“The reason is that Ahmad Mahmud is not an indigene of Zamfara even though he hails from Sokoto which is a sister state.

“The essence of appointing Resident Electoral Commissioners is to represent states. We feel in Zamfara that Mahmud does not represent the people of Zamfara,” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, congratulated the nominees whose nominations had been approved by the senate.

  • Senate tasks FG on policy to check insecurity

Senate tasks FG on policy to check insecurity

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to come up with a policy on the protection of its citizens, especially those in rural areas.

The upper chamber also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately send relief materials to villages in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara where lives were lost in recent attacks.

The calls were sequel to a motion on “Urgent Need to look into the Killings and Attacks that took place in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara” sponsored by Sen. Tijjani Kaura (APC-Zamfara) at plenary on Wednesday.

He said the attack on Friday left 23 people dead in Mallamawa and Tungar Kahau villages, while property were torched and plundered.

“Similarly, four villages, namely, Maikamarimi, Gidan Anna, Mallamawa and Tungar Kahau were burnt to ashes including all their farm produce worth about N385, 000, 000.’’

Kaura said that the State Government had over the years put in place a lot of measures to bring an end to the menace but that the attacks had resurfaced.

“The military operation `Harbin Kunama’ that was launched by President Muhammadu Buhari to flush out the bandits is still in place and such attacks are happening unabated.

“These security breaches are on the increase in spite of the huge resources being expended by the Federal and Zamfara State Governments,” he said.

The lawmaker called for collaborative effort between Federal and State Governments to come up with a definite policy on protecting its citizens, especially those living in rural areas.

Contributing, the Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, called for the establishment of state police to curb insecurity in the country.

“Indigenes of the state employed as state police will know the terrain where bandits are hiding,” he said.

But, Sen. Dino Melye (APC-Kogi) said establishment of state police would be counter-productive since they would show much loyalty to the governors who would use them against political opponents.

On his part, Sen. Jonah Jang (PDP-Plateau) said: “we are not serious in this country on the matters of insecurity.

“Any person arrested should be prosecuted irrespective of his political godfather.

“Plateau State had been in the forefront of attacks by Boko Haram. It is beyond what we think.

“For whatever reason, some people are financing and backing Boko Haram, but only God knows.”

He advocated for state police but called for a law that would create it.

Also speaking, Sen. Kabiru Gaya (APC-Kano) called for a review of the Constitution to include roles for traditional rulers to give them opportunity to bring peace to their domains.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said that there was definitely a collapse of security infrastructure in the country.
He decried the level of impunity where people illegally carried arms all over the place.

Saraki said that an ad hoc committee would be constituted to deal with the matter.
