  • 3 students die of `mysterious’ disease in Zamfara

The Zamfara Government has confirmed the death of three students at the Government Arabic Boarding Secondary School Maradun, following the outbreak of a mysterious disease.

The state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Mukhtar Lugga told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Wednesday that two other students admitted at the General Hospital, Maradun.

According to him, the disease manifested last Monday and the state government had mobilized a team of medical experts to control the situation.

“We established two emergency management centres, one in the school while the other one is at the Maradun General Hospital.

“We also established new hostels in the school to decongest the students to avoid further spread of the desease.

“We are waiting for the medical team to finish its work so as to know the cause of the outbreak, we cannot conclude now.

“But we are suspecting the outbreak to be gastroenteritis,” he said. (NAN)

  • Ecobank moves to take over Zamfara’s fund in bank

Ecobank Nigeria Limited on Tuesday prayed the Federal High Court in Lagos for an order allowing it to take over funds belonging to Zamfara State Government which is domiciled in United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc.

Ecobank had initiated garnishee proceedings against UBA over an alleged N3.1 billion debt owed by the state.

But, UBA, through its lawyer, Alfred Uwaka, filed a preliminary objection seeking to strike out an order nisi made by Justice Babs Kuewumi.

A order nisi is a court order that does not have any force, meaning Ecobank cannot access the funds unless a particular condition is met and the ruling becomes an order absolute (binding).

Uwaka contended that Ecobank failed to obtain the consent of Zamfara’s Attorney-General before initiating the garnishee proceedings.

“Failure to comply with the application for consent makes the order null and void,” he said.

Ecobank’s lawyer, Mr. Kunle Ogunba (SAN), however, urged the court to make the order absolute so that it can take over Zamfara’s funds in UBA.

He said the onus was on UBA was to show how much of Zamfara’s funds it had or not, adding that filing a preliminary objection was an admission that the bank indeed has Zamfara’s money.

Ogunba said: “I submit that a garnishee who files a notice of preliminary objection contending that no consent of the attorney-general was sought has unwittingly admitted that it has the judgment-debtor’s funds.”

The senior advocate recalled that in a previous garnishee proceeding, UBA wasted no time in telling the court that Zamfara had no money in its account with the bank.

“If they (UBA) have no money belonging to Zamfara, why file a preliminary objection? The approach they have taken shows that the court was right to have granted an order nisi.

“Based on the procedure adopted by the garnishee, it has shown clearly that it has the funds. The money is there. We’re sure of our facts.

“We urge the court to make the order absolute against UBA,” Ogunba said.

“We constructed 33 blocks of public toilets, 168 hand pump boreholes in 15 primary schools and health centers in the benefitting Local Government Areas (LGAs) under this programme in 2015.

“Considering the importance of this project in improving healthcare delivery to rural communities, the state governor, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Yari had recently approved the release of N400 million as counterpart fund for the second phase of the projects in 2017.

“We will follow the criteria given by the state government and DFID/UNICEF through the state Rural and Water Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) to select another three LGAs that will benefit under the programme in the second phase.

“Over 80 public school and hospitals across the three LGAs to be selected will benefit under the projects in 2017 “, he said.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr Ehisienmen Osaigbovo on Thursday in Abuja.

The minister said that the action of some senseless enemies of peace was most regrettable at a time President Muhammadu Buhari’s led administration is putting measures in place to revamp the nation’s economy. He said that the Federal Government was working hard to build a vibrant and united country where every individual would realise his potentials, irrespective of tribe, religion nor political affiliations. • Zamfara governor’s daughter to check child marriage

Zamfara governor’s daughter to check child marriage

The daughter of the Zamfara state governor, Hajiya Zainab Yari, has drawn up an education programme towards checking forceful marriage through her Non-Governmental Organization, “Himma Community Health Circle Initiative (H. Coheic).

This was disclosed by the NGO’s Public Relations Officer, Eunice Bosua at a press conference in Gusau on Saturday.

Bosua said that the initiative had already started a campaign tagged “sponsor a girl-child to school” in two states and Abuja with the aim of encouraging parents and other well-to-do individuals to sponsor the education of female children.

She said the focus was largely on the female children because the initiative had discovered that a larger percentage of out of school children in the states were girls.

She explained that because they were out of school, such girls cannot think and decide for themselves and so they are subjected to forceful marriages and other challenges.

She said any girl picked by the initiative or is sponsored by an individual or organization through the initiative would be encouraged to remain in school until she finished her senior secondary school.

She further said the NGO would cater for all the education needs of its beneficiaries who desired to further their education up to tertiary level.

She said the pilot scheme of the project would be carried out simultaneously in the FCT and Zamfara and Bauchi states.

The spokeswoman appealed to all well meaning individuals and organizations to partner with H. Coheic in order to give girls a chance. (NAN)

  • Buhari, Yari meet over security in Zamfara

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met behind closed doors with Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting centred on security situations in the state.

About 40 persons were recently abducted by gunmen in Maru Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Yari disclosed that those abducted have been rescued and reunited with their families.

He said: “As you are aware, some villages in Zamfara State have been under attacks by bandits and the President has carried out his constitutional responsibility by sending security men to the state.

“So I am here to brief him on the security situation in the state. The operation is ongoing and is going on successfully. I am rushing back there to visit the troops in order to boast their morale.

“I will be with them throughout the week. In this kind of situation, you have to be with the people in order to show them that you are concerned as a leader.

“I believe the security agencies are doing their best and we will continue as government to give them the support needed to make the operation successful.

“We are hoping that the military will remain there for longer time and we are ready to take care of their logistics.

“The problem we have is that the state is surrounded by forests. The military men there are currently in about six camps. We hope they will stay there for a while.

“We thank God that the 40 people are back with their families. We have retrieved them from their abductors and we have returned them to their families without any injury. We also did not pay any ransom,” he said.

  • Bandits kill two policemen, 23 others in Zamfara

Two policemen and 23 others were killed by bandits in Dole, Tudun Bugaje and Kwangwami communities in Zurmi Local Government of Zamfara State, at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Dan Awunah stated this yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Awunah said the police mobile force and the counter-terrorism unit had been deployed in the area to restore law and order.

The Vice Chairman of Anka Local Government Area in Zamfara, Alhaji Yahuza Ibrahim, has allegedly been kidnapped.

The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad, disclosed this to newsmen in Anka on Wednesday.

Muhammad, who was in tears, said he received the report of the incident from the victim’s home village, Wiya, in the early hours of Wednesday.

He said eye witnesses from Ibrahim’s village said gunmen drove into the settlement on Tuesday night and fired gunshots into the air before they took away the vice chairman.

He said shortly after he received the report, he got a phone call from a hidden number in which a male voice spoke to him in Hausa language and asked for a ransom of N5 million to facilitate the safe release of the victim.

“It was then that we realised that the kidnap was real and had been carried out by bandits who hide in the nearby bushes,” the chairman said.

He said he had already reported the matter to the state government as well as all security agencies in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Muhammad Shehu, however, said he could not confirm or deny the report because he was on his way back to the state from a trip. (NAN)

  • Zamfara 8 photo opp.

That pictures don’t lie is almost an age-old maxim. And in this age of speed, instantaneity, ubiquity and compulsive exposure, you never could tell which eyes are watching you and whose cameras are snapping you. For this reason, Hardball would admonish improved guardedness if not sobriety for earthlings of this age.

Why, it does not hurt to be on your guards anyway if you know how dangerous the world has become. And sobriety, (you may quote Hardball on this) is all you’ve got left. They can never make sober machines!

But Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State does not seem like a man who has a capacity to be guarded; not the least being sober. A photograph in the media (see Vanguard, 25/8 page 8) lends credence. Of course there are other matters with his state’s legislature but as we say in the village, let’s allow that whatever bites during the night is mosquito.

The picture speaks volumes. It was the day after the heinous killing of eight persons in his state by some murderous scoundrels. Yari was not alone in the picture: there was also President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State. The photo, which would have been a wonderful presidential public relations gimmick on a sunny day, shows the president apparently poking a little fun at Governor Shettima, which leaves Governor Yari cracking up in laughter.

Good photograph but exposure at that moment was in very bad taste. The story of the day was the dastardly killing in Zamfara. This photo actually illustrates that sad, sad story in some newspapers. Why is the story gruesome and the photo celebratory?

Recall that it was the same inappropriate photo show when Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi visited the president in Aso Rock Villa shortly after Fulani herdsmen massacred some villagers in his state. Ugwuanyi had dressed in flowing agbada and pictures showed him with the president in a joyous mood. How could he forget so soon that there was mourning back home? The insensitivity inherent in these types of photographs is almost blood-chilling.

And as if to buttress this point, or what we have termed Governor Yari’s photo-finish, the governor, who ought to be sober and mourning, said the damnedest thing after the meeting with the president. Speaking to the press and seeking to debunk some supposed irregularities in the story, the governor said two students of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara were fighting and one of them began to shout that the other abused Prophet Muhammad. Pronto, other students gathered and beat the boy to a coma. Security personnel came around, requested help from a nearby shop owner to ferry the victim to the hospital.

The mob got wind of the rescue effort and traced the victim to the hospital. When they could not gain access to him, they returned to burn down the shop of the Good Samaritan. Not content, they located his house in town, cordoned and razed it with eight people in it.

And here is Yari’s final word of admonition to the world: “… everybody killed in the house were (sic) Muslims and not like the rumours going around in the social media that Christians are being killed in Zamfara.”

He also noted that the killers, who are students of the polytechnic, were at large….hmmmm.
