Zenith Bank, CFA Institute sign MoU on manpower development

Zenith Bank Plc has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute to support the formation, training, and updating of human capital in finance and investment.

The pact was signed by Group Managing Director, Zenith Bank Plc, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu; President, CFA Institute, Margaret Franklin; and President, CFA Society Nigeria, Ibukun Oyedeji. It is expected to promote the overall development of the Nigerian financial services sector.

Onyeagwu lauded the CFA Institute and the CFA Society, Nigeria for their laudable programmes in developing finance and investment professionals in Nigeria.

According to him, the institute’s Women in Investment Management Initiative, CFA Institute Research Challenge, CFA Society Nigeria Ethics Challenge and University Affiliation Programme are laudable.

He said Zenith Bank would continue to partner with the CFA Institute and the CFA Society Nigeria to ensure that young finance and investment professionals get the needed support for their career development.

“As a good corporate citizen, Zenith Bank remains committed to furthering the economic, cultural and social development of the society. As such, we continue to support projects and initiatives that have long-term social and economic benefits for our various publics and stakeholders. Partnering with the CFA Institute and the CFA Society Nigeria is therefore a demonstration of our commitment to building professional excellence in the finance services industry in Nigeria,” Onyeagwu said.

At the CFA Institute Africa Investment Conference, during the ‘Journey to the Top: A Discourse with CEOs’ segment, Onyeagwu inspired future finance and investment professionals to uphold the highest standards of integrity. He stressed the importance of making difficult yet high-quality decisions, building robust networks, and dedicating themselves to hard work for career success.

In his words, “as upcoming professionals, the opportunities are immense for you. Africa doesn’t get bigger than Nigeria. There is scarcity of the right kind of people that have the talent, that have the character and the leadership to provide leadership in organizations. Make a decision to be one of those, make a decision to be different. You must be driven by your passion; you must delay gratification. In Zenith what is driving us is the strive for excellence. It is not about who you are and where you come from. We have the best class of talents you can think of anywhere in the world.” He assured the young finance and investment professionals that Zenith Bank will offer immediate employment opportunity to CFA Charter Holders and those who qualify as Chartered Accountants.

The mission of the CFA Institute is to lead the investment industry with the highest standards of ethics, education and professional excellence for the ultimate benefit of society and that starts with our CFA programme”.

She commended Zenith Bank for its continued support to the CFA Society Nigeria and sponsorship of the CFA Institute Research Challenge over the years. • Zenith Bank’s Q3 profit hits N505 billion

    Zenith Bank’s Q3 profit hits N505 billion

Zenith Bank Plc has achieved N505 billion profit before tax in its unaudited results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2023. This represents 149 per cent significant leap from N202.5 billion it achieved  in the third quarter of 2022.

The bank’s profit after tax stood at N434.2 billion, representing 149 per cent growth from N174.3 billion it recorded in same period of 2022.

The bank also achieved a remarkable triple-digit growth of 114 per cent from N620.6 billion reported in third quarter 2022 to N1.33 trillion in third quarter 2023. This performance demonstrates the Group’s resilience and strong market share despite a very challenging macroeconomic environment.

According to the bank’s unaudited half-year financial results presented to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), the triple-digit growth in the topline also enhanced the bottom line.

The growth in the topline arose from both interest and non-interest income. Interest income grew in the current period by 72 per cent to N670.9 billion from N390.8 billion in third quarter 2022, while non-interest income grew by 186 per cent from N212 billion to N607.2 billion.

The growth in profit is similarly attributable to the twin effects of the improvement in interest and non-interest income. Interest income increased because of the growth in risk assets as well as the effective pricing thereon.

The non-interest income growth is largely driven by the revaluation gain due to the unification of exchange rates during the year. The cost-to-income ratio reduced from 55.8 per cent in third quarter 2022 to 37.8 per cent in the current period.

Impairment levels increased due to the deliberate incremental provisions necessitated by the conservative approach towards the heightened risk environment and the creation of a counter-cyclical buffer needed to deal with any impending volatility of exchange rates.  This caused the cost of risk to deteriorate from 1.3 per cent in third quarter 2022 to 5.5 per cent in third quarter 2023, however this is an improvement from second quarter  2023 where cost of risk printed at 8.8 per cent because of prudent management of risk assets.

Total assets grew by 48 per cent from N12.3 trillion to N18.2 trillion in the period ended 30 September 2023, mainly driven by growth in customers’ deposits. Customers’ deposits grew by 49per cent from N8.98 trillion in December 2022 to N13.38 trillion in September 2023.  The growth in customers’ deposits cuts across both corporate and retail segments with the savings portfolio (all currencies) growing from N2.7 trillion in December 2022 to N4.6 trillion in September 2023.

Gross loans increased by 48 per cent from N4.1 trillion in December 2022 to N6.1 trillion in September 2023 due to the revaluation of foreign currency denominated loans as well as the growth in local currency loans to strategic and thriving sectors of the economy. The non-performing loan ratio improved to 3.8 per cent in the period ended 30 September 2023, which is well below prudential limits.

Net interest margin (NIM) printed at 5.6 per cent from 6.2 per cent reported in September 2022 due to low yield in government securities.  Capital adequacy ratio improved marginally to 20.1 per cent from 19.8 per cent while liquidity ratio declined from 75 per cent to 68 per cent.  However, all our prudential ratios remain above regulatory thresholds.
