At a briefing at the weekend in Lagos, the firm’s Chief Programme and Business Development Officer, Tori Abiola, explained that entrepreneurs, start-ups and early firms face the challenges of infrastructure and mentoring, among others, adding that at the conference sessions at the summit, these problems would be tacked by experts.
She said Unicorn’s strategy is to boost innovation and empower entrepreneurs to identify and build sustainable firms that will grow the economy.
She said over 150 investors were being expected from China and other countries at the two-day forum and that, expectedly, they would provide capital needed to spur the country’s economy. At the end, she said, Nigerians would benefit from their activities.
Abiola said UNILAG was chosen because of its student population and that the fact Yaba, its location, is a hub of e-technology. She noted that because everyone leverages technology, through it, we could change the world and acquire efunding for Africa. Her firm is targeting about 80 per cent of the population.
She said entrepreneurship is not about talents alone, but also about opportunities, which is lacking in our ecosystem. It is for this that the summit would provide room for networking for start-ups from experienced personnel and business founders.
On mentoring, she said there would be engagement between mentors and start-ups and that the former would coach, inspire and guide owners and their businesses.
At the briefing were UNILAG’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Development Services, Prof Foashade Ogunsade; DVC, Academics and Research, Prof. Oluwole Familoni; Director, UNILAG’s Entrepreneuship and Skills Development Centre Mr Sunday Adebisi and co-founder, Blueship Technologies, Mr Olumide Soyombo.
