THE Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Command of the Nigeria Police has begun review of its strategies to combat new trends deployed by criminals and terrorists seeking to destabilise the country.
Police Commissioner in charge of EOD, Maikudi Shehu, stated this at the command’s first quarterly conference with senior officers and commanders, with the theme: EOD Dynamics: Enhancing Nuclear/Chemical Security in Nigeria, in Lagos.
The Nation reports that the strategy review came on the heels of revelations that terrorists and criminals had resorted to using fertilisers and other non-regulated combustible materials to manufacture explosives in attacking places of interest.
Shehu said steps had been taken to reduce illegal use of explosive and allied materials to perpetrate heinous crimes.

The police chief said the command had ensured fortification of explosives magazines, strict monitoring of explosive documentation, supervision of explosive/radioactive materials usage and transportation.
He said recent crime statistics in the country indicated emerging trend in the form of terrorists’ coordinated attacks on soft targets and security agencies/facilities, especially in the Northeast.
“Terrorism has become one of the most dangerous threats to world peace such that no country is immune from it. Nevertheless, the dynamics in the strategies devised by terrorist groups call for the urgent need to re-strategise our modus operandi in our fight against all forms of crime and criminality…”
