Three kidnapped travellers regain freedom

Three men, who were kidnapped last Friday on Auga-Ise road in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State, have regained freedom.

Two of the men in a Toyota Corolla car with registration number ABC 36PY, are Gbalaja Mayowa, an employee of the Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State and Arifayan Ayolekan, a Feeds Mill Company worker based in Okenne.

They were both travelling to Ikare-Akoko for a wedding.

The third victim, Ibrahim Lawal, the occupant of a Mitsubishi pickup van, is an official of Dangote Group.

He was coming from Ibese and heading for Obajana when the gunmen struck.

The efforts of the police in Ikare-Akoko and those of members of vigilance groups aided their release.

The abductors had demanded N30million ransom for the release of the Dangote worker, while N2million was to be paid by the two men travelling for a wedding.

Sources said when the kidnappers sensed that they were being trailed with the assistance of the police in Kogi and Edo states, they accepted an unspecified ransom far below their earlier demand and released the victims.

The Nation learnt that stakeholders in the four local governments in Akoko are meeting on curbing kidnapping, ritual killing and robbery.

Community spokesman Ibrahim Kilani said: “These crimes will scare investors away from our area.”

He said security is everybody’s business, adding that it should not be left for the government alone.
