The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) have asked students to vacate campus accommodation by Saturday.
This is in line with directive of the Federal Government that all tertiary institutions should shut down to check the spread of COVID-19.
A statement by the university’s Public Relations unit noted that students have until 4.00pm Saturday to vacate the campus
The statement reads: “Following the increase of identified cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country, the University of Lagos Management,at a meeting held with the Provost and Deans Committee on Thursday, March 19, 2020, resolved to close the University.
“Subsequently, Senate at an emergency meeting held today, Friday, March 20, 2020 approved the resolution in accordance with the order issued by the Federal Government, Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission that all schools nationwide should be closed for the period of ONE MONTH effective from Monday, March 23, 2020as a proactive step aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.
“In view of the above, Management hereby directs that latest by 4:00p.m.on Saturday, March 21, 2020,all students should vacate the hostels and return home. Resumption date is subject to review as developments unfold.
Members of the University community are enjoined to follow precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

At YABATECH, students resident on campus only have until 12noon on Saturday to vacate campus, according to a statement signed by the school authorities.
“Students are to vacate halls of residence by 12noon tomorrow Saturday 21 March, 2020.”
The Lagos State University (LASU) and the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) also announced closures on Friday.
However, both institutions, which are owned by the Lagos State Government, directed that employees must show up.
A statement by Mr. Ademola Adekoya after the University Senate approved the closure noted: “Consequent upon the foregoing, all students are hereby directed to vacate the University Campuses immediately at Ojo, Epe and Ikeja from Friday, 20th March 2020. Information on a resumption date would be communicated in due course.
“However, members of staff of the University are expected to be at their respective duty posts.”
At LASPOTECH, workers were told the holiday did not apply to them.
“This announcement is applicable to only students of the Polytechnic as staff are expected to carry on various daily official routine,” the statement reads.
