We’re at the mercy of robbers, Lagos community laments

Residents of Sanya Street in Surulere have appealed to the government to save them from incessant armed robbery attacks.

They alleged that hoodlums who usually rode on motorcycles have been tormenting them since last month, dispossessing them of valuables and also killing people.

Sanya Street is located before Mile Two off the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

Residents said armed robbers usually used stationary articulated vehicles on the expressway as cover to operate unhindered.

They claimed that the criminals usually attacked early morning or late in the night, adding that the constant robbery had forced commercial buses to desert the bus stop during those hours.

A resident who gave his name as Basir said more than two persons have been killed in the past week, adding that one Rashidi was shot by the criminals during an operation four-days-ago.

“Commercial buses do not stop at Sanya early in the morning or late in the night. This is because these armed robbers jump on anyone that stopped to pick up passengers.

“They rob the driver and all the passengers. They beat people us and even shoot some. Just few days ago, they killed our neighbour Rashidi.”

Contacted, police spokesman Bala Elkana said a shooting incident was reported at the police division about two weeks ago in which some persons sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital by their family.

He said: “About two weeks ago, shooting incident was reported at the station, entry was made and the family took them to the hospital but they removed the victims from the hospital before the police could get there. Nobody reported anyone dead for such report would have been relayed.

“Adequate security has been put in place to checkmate the activities of criminals on 24-hour basis in the area.”
