‘Why Benue school was razed’

More facts have begun to emerge with regard to why suspected candidates of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) razed a secondary school in Benue State.

The Nation investigations, however, provided insight into what may have been the reason the suspected aggrieved WAEC candidates allegedly carried out the action.

A member of staff of the school who spoke in confidence because he was not allowed to speak on the matter told The Nation that SSS 3 students registered for the  WASSCE and their names were forwarded to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) website successfully.

But when the Headteacher, Mr Aliba Stephen Sende approached the WAEC office, he was informed that his school did not have enough computers to cover the number of registered students.

Apart from the cancellation, the sum of N1 million must be paid by the school authority before the centre would be reopened.

According to the source, the Headteacher appealed to WAEC to reopen their data so that the registration would be edited but the examination body did not reply on time.

He said the registration was edited and submitted two weeks before WASSCE commenced, the school was told that it was closed.

Following the reported closure of the registration, the Headteacher rushed to WAEC again which gave him conditions that must be fulfilled for an external examination centre to be established for the affected students to sit for examinations.

The conditions were that GSS Tse-Agberagba must have 150 candidates and the school must have a perimeter fence.

The school authorities found it difficult to fulfil these conditions and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) resolved that the school management should hold on until next year for the students to come back and write their WASSCE.

It was learnt that those who felt aggrieved by the unfortunate development allegedly decided to set the school ablaze in the early hours of yesterday.

The Divisional Police office (DPO) has commenced investigations to fish out those behind the fire incident.
