The Managing Director (MD) of Women Radio 91.7, Toun Okewale Sonaiya, has urged the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to help sensitise people to shun violence against women so they can vote and be voted for in elections.

Sonaiya, who spoke yesterday during an advocacy visit to NAWOJ Lagos State chapter, emphasised the need for all to ensure this year’s general elections are peaceful.

She said this will create an enabling political space for eligible women to participate.

Sonaiya advocated for female candidates vying for various positions to be given more visibility on TV, radio and newspapers, through regular reporting of their activities.

Sonaiya said with the support of UNwomen, tracking incidences of electoral violence against women in 2019 elections will be a priority.

Lagos NAWOJ Chairperson Sekinah Lawal attested to the media’s impact on elections and the important role of women in the media.

Lawal emphasized that NAWOJ would support the ’No To Violence Against Women’ campaign through sensitisation and enlightenment to women on what to do before, during and after the election.

Lawal assured Women Radio that NAWOJ would give publicity to female candidates.

NAWOJ members present at the visit were Faoziyah Salako-Sanni of Bond FM, Kikelomo Oduyebo of LTV, Dr. Grace Achum, publishers of Business Plus magazine and Ifejola Otun of Ministry of Information, NAWOJ Secretary.
