Women tasked to broaden their perception - The Nation News

As we celebrate another International Women’s Day, I urge every woman to rise up to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perception and maintain high level of integrity.”

These were the words of a human right and gender activist, management scientist and lecturer with The Bells University of Technology, Dr Mrs Nkiruka Ifekwem, in an interview with newsmen at a women gathering in Lagos yesterday.

According to Ifekwem, the celebration is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights, bearing in mind that women’s right is human right; and with so much discriminations and obnoxious laws still staring women in the face in most parts of Africa, it becomes necessary that the day will be a day to reflect on these challenges.

Speaking on theme for this year “Ëach for Equal”, Ifekwem enjoined women all over the world to rise to declare that an equal world is an enabled world.

“Women should rise to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perception and celebrate women’s’ achievements. Let all women be each for equal,” she said.

“Now it’s 25 years after, and the question is how far have women performed politically 25 years after. You find out that as Nigeria’s political landscape gets deadlier, women keep dropping by the side.

It’s quite disheartening. In a nut shell, the dream and goals of women 25 years after Beijing is still far from being achieved,” she lamented.

Ifekwem, therefore, urged women never to give up, but rather continue to work hard, hold their heads high and maintain the highest level of integrity.
