A politician in Rivers State, Mrs. Victoria Nyeche has appealed to mothers in the state to restrain their children from being used as political thugs at elections, especially in today’s exercise.
Nyeche who is currently a member representing Port Harcourt, Constituency One in the Rivers State House of Assembly, made the appeal during the celebration of 2019 World Women Day, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The Lawmaker who is also the Chairperson, House Committee on Women Affairs, said the state needs peace, adding that violence has brought so much set-back in the state, hence the need for women to rise up and speak out against political thuggery.
Nyeche further encouraged the women not to allow the violence witnessed in the previous polls in the State to discourage them from coming out today to exercise their franchise.
She said, “As women, do not be afraid, people want you to stay behind so that they can have their ways during elections, but be strong, overcome that fear, come out and be part of the process, women must speak up”
“Women should do something to contribute to the country because times are changing, this is no longer time to sit back and watch, ,support your fellow women so that people will gather to celebrate us”
Nyeche further urged women to celebrate themselves and train their children well to make them become competitive with children in other parts of the world.
Also speaking, a woman activist, Rukuyatu Amina, urged women to support their fellow women by voting for them.
