In Yoruba culture in South Western part of Nigeria; “AbíÍìjà” expresses the concept of birth to life, every birth to life, every birth is preceded by the incubation period of pregnancy all within the market (life). As mostly said, “this world is a market place”. As every man comes in to perform one transaction or the other and later leave to their various destinations.
The most captivating and mind-blowing scene seen in this painting is the stomach of a heavily pregnant woman that is revealed and unfold from the crackings depicted in tones of brown. A pregnancy is conceived in the market reflecting the world we found ourselves in through birth.
