A renewed call for a restructured Nigeria and true federalism came up yesterday at the 70th birthday of renowned poet Odia Ofeimun.

Nigeria’s intelligentsia at the event called for a centrally-governed Nigeria, while observing that it would give rise to a more functional government and political system that worked.

Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, former Ondo State governor Olusegun Mimiko and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) said the way forward was a restructured country where the sub-nationalities would have some level of autonomy to independently govern themselves within the Nigeria nation.

The keynote speaker, Prof Biodun Jeyifo, said: “Odia is a very brilliant man, who has paid his dues. He was the private secretary of the late sage, Chief Obafemi  Awolowo and a prolific writer.”

The event was attended by scholars, writers, social critics, politicians, lawyers, students, among others.
