Security forces have recorded a major operational success in Karaduwa village, Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, dealing a significant blow to criminal elements terrorising the area.

The Nation reports that troops, in a swift and coordinated operation, engaged armed bandits in a fierce gun battle, killing three of them, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.

One suspect was arrested alive and is currently providing useful information to security agencies as investigations continue.

The operation also led to the recovery of eight motorcycles and assorted weapons believed to have been used by the gang to carry out attacks on rural communities and evade security patrols.

Findings by The Nation revealed that residents of Karaduwa and neighbouring villages welcomed the army-led operation, describing it as a long-awaited relief and a clear indication that security forces are tightening the net around criminal networks operating across Katsina State.

Military sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the success underscores renewed intelligence-driven operations and sustained patrols aimed at dismantling bandit hideouts, restricting their movement, and restoring public confidence.

“This operation sends a strong message that there will be no safe haven for criminals. Follow-up operations are ongoing to track fleeing suspects and clear surrounding forests,” one of the sources said.

The latest development is considered a significant setback for banditry in Matazu LGA and reinforces the resolve of security forces to reclaim troubled areas across Katsina State.

  • NYCN seeks criminalisation of ransom payments to end kidnappings in Nigeria

NYCN seeks criminalisation of ransom payments to end kidnappings in Nigeria

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has urged security authorities to urgently criminalise and enforce laws against ransom payments to end kidnappings in Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this was contained in an open letter on Saturday in Kaduna by the NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, addressed to the National Security Adviser (NSA), and other top security officials.

The letter, dated Jan  3, 2026, was also copied to the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and the Inspector-General of Police.

Abubakar said he wrote on behalf of the NYCN and millions of Northern youths bearing the brunt of insecurity ravaging communities.

He said that in spite of efforts by gallant security forces, kidnapping remained profitable due to continuous ransom payments by desperate citizens and corporate bodies.

The NYCN called on the security authorities to take a decisive stand by strictly enforcing laws against ransom payments.

Abubakar emphasised that ransom payments provide the “oxygen of banditry” and sustain the kidnapping industry.

He said every ransom paid enables bandits to buy weapons, fund logistics, and recruit more fighters.

The NYCN president stressed that paying ransom inadvertently subsidises terrorism and national destruction.

He demanded immediate gazetting and publicisation of existing legal frameworks criminalising ransom payments.

Abubakar insisted that such laws must not remain on paper but be widely known to all Nigerians.

According to him, applying the law without fear or favour is the only way to break the demand-and-supply cycle.

Abubakar urged intelligence-led rescue operations using drones, signal interceptors, and rapid response teams.

He said advanced technology must replace financial negotiations in rescuing kidnapped victims.

Abubakar said companies paying ransoms should instead invest in private security partnerships and state-led protection schemes.

He acknowledged the emotional trauma families face when loved ones are abducted.

He, however, warned that private ransom payments create a larger public catastrophe.

Abubakar appealed to Nigerians to collectively refuse enriching criminals through ransom payments.

He said the NYCN was ready to partner with the NSA to sensitise grassroots communities.

Abubakar said that history would judge Nigeria by the courage shown in 2026 to end the marketplace of human misery.

He called for criminal liability against families, corporate organisations, and associations that negotiate or pay ransoms.

He also called for corporate accountability in addressing kidnapping threats.

Niger orders schools in security-affected areas to remain closed

Several public and private schools in security-affected areas of Niger State will remain closed, even as the state government has approved the reopening of schools in safe locations from January 12, 2026.

The Niger State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Hadiza Asabe Mohammed in a press statement announced  that only schools located in areas assessed as safe and secure are allowed to resume academic activities, while those in unsafe or insecure communities will stay shut until cleared by security agencies.

The decision, according to the ministry, followed security assessments and consultations with relevant security authorities, aimed at protecting students, teachers, and school communities amid lingering insecurity in parts of the state.

As part of the reopening process, school authorities in approved areas have been directed to immediately register all returning students and submit the data to the ministry within one week of resumption for monitoring and documentation.

Local Government Area chairmen were also instructed to support the reopening by ensuring adequate security presence in and around school premises, working with security operatives.

To ensure transparency, the ministry said it will release an official list of public and private schools approved to reopen on January 12.

    • Military uncovers mastermind of Maiduguri mosque bombing
    • Troops seize cache of 12.7mm ammunition in Maiduguri

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sustained a series of intelligence-driven air interdiction operations across the North-East and North-West, neutralising terrorist elements and degrading their logistics and operational networks.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said in a statement yesterday that the operations were conducted between Jan. 1 and 2 under Operations HADIN KAI and FASAN YAMMA Sector 2.

Ejodame said the air strikes were based on actionable intelligence on terrorist movement, hideouts and logistics, with NAF aircraft engaging identified enclaves, routes and assembly areas to deny the groups freedom of action.

He said in the North-East theatre, NAF aircraft carried out precision strikes on terrorist hideouts at Abirma and Chiralia in the Timbuktu Triangle, following sustained surveillance that confirmed the presence of facilities linked to improvised explosive device (IED) production and attack planning.

According to him, the strikes destroyed the targeted structures, with multiple secondary explosions observed, indicating the destruction of explosive stockpiles and logistics.

Ejodame added that further interdiction missions at Guva in the Mandara Mountains dismantled additional terrorist storage and coordination points, significantly weakening the groups’ capacity to regroup or mount attacks.

He said the operations were extended to the North-West, where NAF aircraft struck terrorist elements around Karaduwa Giginya Na in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The NAF spokesman said the terrorists, who were tracked moving in large motorcycle convoys, were engaged at a forested convergence point, leading to the neutralisation of several fighters, destruction of multiple motorcycles and recovery of assorted weapons.

He said the sustained air operations underscored the NAF’s resolve to support joint forces on the ground and dismantle terrorist networks across the country.

The war against terrorists further got a boost with the  Defence Headquarters (DHQ) uncovering  the ringleader behind the recent suicide bombings and attempted attacks in the North East.

The DHQ identified the suspect as Shariff Umar.

According to reports, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on December 24, 2025, killing five people and injuring 35 others during evening prayers.

Although no group claimed responsibility for the attack amid growing security concerns in the North East, the military arrested some suspects linked to the incident.

Boko Haram and its splinter groups, including the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have waged a 15-year campaign of violence targeting civilians, military bases, mosques, and markets.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), which oversees military operations in the North East, said yesterday that 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities were arrested during cordon-and-search operations in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31.

Uba said that following the arrests, detailed identification and investigative processes established the structure, roles, and operational linkages of the terror cell.

He said: “During the investigation, a suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, unequivocally identified Shariff Umar (also known as “Yusuf”) as the ringleader and coordinator of the terror network. According to consistent and corroborated statements, Shariff Umar was responsible for recruiting, preparing, directing, and dispatching suicide bombers to assigned targets, as well as coordinating logistics and delivery of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components.

“Investigations further revealed that Shariff Umar directly coordinated the suicide bombing attack at the Gamboru Market Mosque on 24 December 2025, during which his accomplice, Adamu (now deceased), detonated a suicide vest. He was also identified as the coordinator of the foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, personally handing over IED components to the suicide bomber in Maiduguri.

“Additional links within the network were established, including the involvement of Shariff Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, and the confirmation by his stepdaughter, Amina, who admitted to previously seeing the suspect bomber within their residence. These findings significantly strengthened the investigative trail and exposed the domestic and community-based concealment methods employed by terrorist facilitators.”

The military spokesperson said all suspects remain “firmly in custody and are undergoing intensive, multi-layered investigations aimed at fully dismantling the network,” identifying additional collaborators, and recovering any remaining explosives or logistical assets.

Uba urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to security agencies.

“Cooperation and trust between troops of OPHK and local communities are essential to completely rooting out terrorism and restoring lasting peace across the region,” he said.

The terrorists were also dealt a deadly blow by the Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) which recovered a large cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The recovered items include 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, some live 12.7mm rounds, and power banks concealed in a drainage channel.

The operation followed a cordon-and-search exercise based on actionable intelligence aimed at denying terrorists freedom of action.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI in a statement said , the recovery underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations and community cooperation in preventing potential threats.

Lt. Col. Uba explained that the operation was done alongside troops and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams who  secured the area and are working to drain the channel to determine if there are additional dangerous items.

He noted that the operation is part of sustained efforts to dominate the general area, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure resident safety. The security situation remains calm, with troops maintaining vigilance.

The statement urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious items or movements to security agencies, as collective responsibility is vital to sustaining peace and security in the North-East.

  • Resident doctors set to resume indefinite strike January 12

Resident doctors set to resume indefinite strike January 12

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is set to resume its suspended nationwide industrial action on January 12.

The body warned that its members will return to full-scale protests and service withdrawal if the Federal Government does not fully implement its longstanding demands.

The decision followed an expanded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Friday, January 2,  after which members were briefed via the association’s official X platform, where the President, Dr Muhammad Suleiman, addressed medical and dental trainees and signed off on behalf of the National Officers Committee (NOC).

In the update, the president unveiled a renewed action plan tagged TICS 2.0 with the slogan “No Implementation, No Going Back.”

According to the resolution, NARD will resume TICS 2.0 at exactly 12.00 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026, unless its minimum demands are fully met.

The NEC said the suspension of TICS 2.0 would only be considered after full implementation of the nine minimum demands.

These include the reinstatement of the five doctors from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja; payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears; and full implementation of the professional allowance table, with arrears captured in the 2026 budget.

Other demands are official clarification on skipping and entry-level placement issues by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to chief executives; reintroduction and implementation of the Specialist Allowance; resolution of house officers’ salary delays and arrears with issuance of a formal pay advisory; re-categorisation of membership certificates and issuance of certificates after Part I by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria; commencement of locum and work-hours regulation committees; and resumption and timely conclusion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement process.

NARD explained that the one-week window before the resumption of action was deliberately designed to allow proper congress meetings, extensive media engagement and statutory notifications to security agencies, including the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as hospital managements across the country.

The NOC said it fully aligns with the NEC resolutions and assured members of its commitment to implementing all directives, noting that engagements with relevant authorities would be intensified in the coming days.

As part of preparations, the NEC directed presidents of all 91 NARD centres nationwide to convene congress meetings and immediately follow up with press conferences to explain the grievances and resolutions to the public.

The association said the objective is to dominate public discourse on doctors’ welfare across the country within the next seven days.

In addition, the NEC approved centre-based protests to run from January 12 to January 16, 2026.

These will be followed by regional protests coordinated at caucus leaders’ level, culminating in a national protest to be organised by the NARD National Officers Committee.

The association urged doctors to remain calm, united and focused as it presses ahead with what it described as a decisive phase in the struggle for improved welfare and a more functional health system.

Prof Jonah Onuoha says Mr Peter Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Party (ADC) may not change the political narrative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Onuoha, a lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), spoke in Nsukka on Friday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He was reacting to Obi’s decision to dump the Labour Party and formally join the ADC on Dec. 31, 2025.

The political scientist said Obi’s 2023 electoral surge, especially in the South-East, where LP won several seats, was unlikely to be repeated in 2027.

The people of Hong, one of the most prominent local government areas in Adamawa State, have celebrated one of their foremost living legends, Major General Haldu Hananiya (rtd), on his 84th birthday.

General Hananiya, as the people fondly call him, made a huge impart on the Hong people, beginning from while he reigned as the first military general from the area and later while he served as two-time chief executive of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) when he reportedly always remembered where he came from.

“This is a celebration of integrity and sacrifice,” Dzarma said of Hananiya’s birthday event which took place at the Palace of the Hong paramount ruler, adding that Hananiya is a distinguished son of the soil who has done much for its development, including his more recent contribution to the creation of the Huba Chiefdom.

A former minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Aliyu Idi Hong, said Hananiya is one of the many generals of note from whom Nigeria should tap knowledge and wise counsel in its fight against insecurity.

“There is a lot that we should do as a nation to address insecurity but which we are not doing, such as working closely with our retired generals and former warlords on ways to deal with the bandits and other criminal elements terrorising us today,” Idi Hong said.

Adamawa Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, who is incidentally from Hong, said Hananiya is a mentor who should be celebrated over the many lives he has touched.

The paramount ruler of Hong people, the Tol Huba, Alheri Nyako, said Hananiya is a model of unity and progress that the Hong Chiefdom felt compelled to honour.

A daughter of the soil who attended Hananiya’s birthday, Dr Haphsat Modibbo, said the retired general is a father of all who has done so much for his people and whom the people need to celebrate.

In his response, the celebrant thanked the Hong paramount ruler and all the people for the birthday initiative and prayed that the chiefdom and all the people would continue to experience greatness.

Chairman of the forum, Annas Balla who led his members to a press briefing in Yola Saturday afternoon, said aspirants using Ribadu’s name are dragging the NSA into the mud and heating up the polity.

“He is the Leader and father to all of us in the Progressive fold in Adamawa State, so we must accord him respect that he deserves and defend his name for our collective good,” Balla said.

He asserted that contemporary politics is a popularity contest in which one’s antecedents speak louder than his name.

He expressed confidence in the APC’s chances of reclaiming power in Osun State, declaring that the party was fully prepared to defeat the incumbent administration in the next governorship election, noting that “we remain a formidable political force.”

Also, the Deputy Editor and Head of Politics at The Sun Newspapers, Ismail Omipidan, who served as the Chief Press Secretary(CPS) to Oyetola, when he was governor of the state, blamed the APC’s loss in the 2022 election on complacency, internal sabotage, leadership lapses, weak media engagement, poor election management, indiscipline and unresolved intra-party grievances.

He outlined critical steps for APC’s return to power, including total reconciliation and unity, full integration of new members, professionalised and coordinated media engagement, issue-based campaigns, youth inclusion, strategic voter-targeting committees, strict party discipline and credible election logistics.

He warned that internal disunity remains the party’s greatest threat, adding that victory in 2026 would naturally strengthen APC’s prospects in 2027 due to the advantage of incumbency.

Similarly, APC Media Director, Chief Kola Olabisi, noted that unity, reconciliation, inclusion, effective candidate branding and grassroots mobilisation remain the pillars of APC’s strategy towards victory in 2026.

He added that several party leaders and stakeholders laid credence to APC strategies, including Senator Ajibola Basiru (PhD), gubernatorial aspirant, Prince Dotun Babayemi, Senior Special Assistant (SSAP) on Protocol to President Tinubu, Ambassador Issah Niniola, Hon.
