NIS DG Shaibu congratulates Super Eagles on AFCON round of 16 qualification

The Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has congratulated the Super Eagles on securing a place in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, praised the players’ patriotism, commitment, and resilience following Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on Saturday, which guaranteed the team’s progression to the knockout stage with a game to spare.

“I must salute the fighting spirit of the Super Eagles. They have clearly put the 2026 World Cup disappointment behind them. Winning these two straight games evidently showcased that,” Shaibu said.

He urged the team to stay focused and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to transform Nigeria’s sports sector, particularly football.

“The job is not complete yet. The target is to win a fourth continental title. President Tinubu has shown interest in our sports sector through the release of funds and by rewarding the triumphant Super Falcons and D’Tigresses. These gestures send a strong message to our sportsmen and women across the board,” he added.

Shaibu also affirmed the continued support of NIS management and staff for the Super Eagles, emphasizing the institute’s role in grooming world-class coaches to develop top athletes for future competitions.

“At the NIS, we will continue to support the Super Eagles because they are the flagship team of the nation. Our focus is on training coaches of international standard, who will, in turn, produce excellent athletes. This will ensure that Nigeria flourishes even better than in our glorious past,” he concluded.

SEC: N753bn raised through commercial papers in seven months

Over N753 billion was raised by corporations between April and October 2025 to meet short-term financing needs across key sectors of the economy.

Commercial paper is a short-term, unsecured promissory note issued by large corporations to raise funds for working capital and operational needs.

The instruments typically mature within a few days to one year, and are widely used by companies seeking quick and relatively low-cost financing.

A statement issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Sunday quoted its Director General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, as saying that the impressive performance of the commercial paper market reflected sustained activity across manufacturing, energy, agriculture, and other productive sectors.

“Commercial paper issuance remained vibrant, with over N753 billion raised to support short-term funding needs across diverse sectors, from manufacturing to energy and agriculture,” Agama said.

He explained that the strong activity in the segment formed part of a broader pipeline of capital-raising transactions approved by the Commission across debt, equity, and short-term instruments within the review period.

According to him, “the Nigerian capital market has demonstrated remarkable depth and adaptability. Between April and October 2025, the Commission approved significant transactions across debt, equity, and commercial paper segments, showing the market’s capacity to mobilize capital for growth. These achievements are essential as we work to position the Nigerian capital market as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth.”

Agama stated that the debt capital market also saw major deals during the period, including the N500 billion Climate Funding Special Purpose Vehicle issuance and the N200 billion Elektron Finance bond transaction, which he said reflected growing interest in infrastructure-related and sustainable finance instruments.

“These figures are not just numbers; they represent confidence in our regulatory framework and the resilience of our market architecture,” the SEC boss said.

He noted that recent macroeconomic developments have contributed to improving investor sentiment, citing Nigeria’s sovereign credit rating upgrade and the country’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list as important signals to domestic and international investors.

“These achievements are not mere milestones; they signal renewed confidence in our economy. They will attract greater investment and enhance capital inflows, reinforcing the stability and growth prospects of our financial markets,” he said.

On inflation dynamics, Agama noted that easing price pressures were creating room for more innovation within the capital market, calling on operators to move decisively in developing new products and platforms.

“This is a call to action for market operators. Innovation cannot remain on paper. We must translate these frameworks into real products and accessible platforms that meet the needs of today’s investors,” he said, adding that “The time for passive observation is over. Our collective responsibility is to activate these opportunities and position the Nigerian capital market as a true engine of inclusive growth.”

The SEC Director General also addressed the sharp downturn recorded in November, when the Nigerian Exchange lost about N6.54 trillion in market capitalisation. He attributed the development to profit-taking activities ahead of the proposed 30 per cent Capital Gains Tax, weak sentiment in banking stocks, and global economic uncertainties.

However, he noted that the market has since recovered, following policy assurances and improved investor outlook. “Importantly, despite November’s volatility, the Exchange remains significantly positive year-to-date, with strong gains that reflect the underlying robustness of our market,” he said.

Agama further drew attention to ongoing structural reforms in the market infrastructure, including the recent migration of the equities settlement cycle from T+3 to T+2.

“By shortening the settlement period, we have enhanced liquidity, reduced counterparty risk, and accelerated the reinvestment of capital,” he said, adding that the Commission is already working toward transitioning to T+1 and eventually T+0.

He stated that these reforms, alongside efforts to deepen commodity trading and expand bond market participation, are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading investment destination on the African continent.

“These changes, combined with ongoing efforts to deepen commodity trading and expand bond market participation, will position Nigeria as a leading investment destination in Africa,” Agama said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has condemned in strong terms the bomb explosion on road users in Zamfara State, leading to the death of seven persons.

Suspected terrorists reportedly planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Magami–Dansadau highway in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Saturday, killing passengers travelling in a bus.

  • Northern youth frontiers reject ADC claims on Sokoto airstrikes

Northern youth frontiers reject ADC claims on Sokoto airstrikes

    …defends Tinubu’s administration

The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) has rejected assertions by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) linking the December 25, 2025, airstrikes in Sokoto state to alleged failures of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement on Sunday, the group’s northwest coordinator, Saminu Tukur, described the claims as misleading and politically motivated.

NYF said it was compelled to respond to what it called attempts by the ADC to politicize a sensitive national security issue involving foreign military intervention on Nigerian soil.

The group added that the ADC’s position undermines the resilience and sacrifices of Nigeria’s security forces and disregards the lawful and coordinated efforts of the Federal Government to protect citizens from terrorism.

He said, “The ADC’s assertion that these military actions are a direct result of the alleged incompetence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is not only misleading but also an affront to the resilience and determination of our national security apparatus.

“It is indeed unfortunate that the ADC has chosen to politicize a grave matter such as foreign military intervention on Nigerian soil. In their attempts to score political points, they have failed to acknowledge the lawful and concerted efforts made by the Nigerian government to protect its citizens from the threat of terrorism.

“Instead of fostering a spirit of unity and support for the measures being implemented to safeguard lives, the ADC has resorted to a narrative that undermines the sacrifices made by our armed forces and the sacrifices of countless Nigerians who have endured the scourge of insecurity.

“The Northern Youth Frontiers insists that Nigerians deserve clarity regarding the outcomes of the airstrikes in Sokoto State. Specifically, we call upon the relevant authorities to disclose the number of terrorists neutralized during this operation.”

He said transparency and accountability are vital to sustaining public trust and demonstrating the effectiveness of counterterrorism operations.

The NYF further argued that Nigeria’s current security challenges did not originate under the Tinubu administration, stressing that terrorism and insecurity are long-standing problems inherited from previous governments, including those of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

He added, “The current administration has inherited a landscape fraught with complexities, and it is disingenuous for the ADC to ignore this historical context in their critique. It is our collective responsibility to address these challenges with a united front rather than engaging in blame games that serve only to further polarize our society.

“The Northern Youth Frontiers calls upon all political parties, including the ADC, Civil Society Organisations, to rise above partisan politics and engage in constructive dialogue that prioritizes the welfare of our citizens.

“It is essential that we work together to devise comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of insecurity while simultaneously strengthening our military capabilities. The time for division is over; what we need now is collaboration and a commitment to the greater good of Nigeria.

“Furthermore, we caution those who continue to escalate the situation through inflammatory rhetoric and unfounded accusations. Such actions not only undermine the morale of our security forces but also embolden those who seek to destabilize our nation.

“The Northern Youth Frontiers will not shy away from exposing individuals and groups who choose to exploit the prevailing insecurity for their own gain. We believe that accountability is a two-way street, and those who engage in divisive politics must be held responsible for their actions.”

Reaffirming its support for President Tinubu’s administration, the NYF urged the ADC and other stakeholders to embrace cooperation and transparency in the collective effort to safeguard lives and build a safer, more prosperous Nigeria.

He urged the ADC and other political entities to join in fostering a culture of cooperation and transparency, one that prioritizes the security and well-being of the citizens over political expediency.
