2027: Why SDP rejected coalition talks to wrestle power from Tinubu, by Prince Adebayo

…says Atiku, Obi will be worse if in govt

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has explained why coalition talks involving his party collapsed, pointing to the lack of credibility, clear ideology, and moral authority among key opposition figures.

Adebayo, who stressed that the SDP is not opposed to coalition politics in principle, said the party will not align with individuals whose records and motivations contradict its values.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday during the 2025 Christmas Marathon and Health Walk organized by him and his wife, Queen Lilian Adebayo, he said mere opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is insufficient reason to form an alliance.

“We are talking with the coalition to find a common purpose, and this purpose must meaningfully impact the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The fact that I don’t like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not mean I should accept from others what I dislike him for. That’s why we carefully interviewed some of them, while others we didn’t even consider. Many are known figures whose records contradict their claims of wanting to rescue Nigeria,” Adebayo said.

He further argued that several opposition figures are leveraging public dissatisfaction with the current government’s performance rather than offering genuine solutions. Using an analogy, he warned Nigerians not to be misled by superficial differences among politicians such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who, he claimed, pursue personal patronage under the guise of championing the masses.

“I think it’s better to make sure that the person who wants to collaborate with you doesn’t have similar tendencies like the person you want to take power from. It will be like what’s the point for a chicken to vote for any of these three people.

“Someone said the best way to handle a chicken during Christmas is to roast it, another said fry it, another said parboil it. How would the chicken vote for any of them.

“Since they could disagree among themselves. None of them could then force the chicken. What we are trying to do is that people don’t capitalize on the obviously bad performance of the government or to come and insinuate to us or ride on the wave of that anger.

“So, these people who are coming are going to be worse. When I saw their mascot, Buhari, I was convinced that we would be dead. We should make sure that someone who is not worse is not smuggled in,” he said.

Adebayo maintained that Nigerians must ensure that individuals “worse than the government” are not “smuggled” into power under the pretence of opposition unity.

He further disclosed that several politicians who sought to join the SDP were rejected after internal screening, noting that some were not even granted interviews.

“We told many of them to go away. You can’t say you want to rescue Nigeria when you’re a fraud,” he stated.

Adebayo further criticized politicians with questionable pasts and character, most especially those facing corruption charges and allegations and planning to take over from President Bola Tinubu.

“Some people are doing coalition after leaving EFCC custody on bail,” he said, adding that criminality and opportunism have no place in genuine reform politics.

“The fact that I am angry with Tinubu doesn’t say I’m blind. How can I say President Tinubu is not capable of governing due to agility and now bring or work with someone who is his senior brother.

“In the long run, you must be credible. What drives you to do something must not be hatred or opportunism. You must look at a way to make the country better.”

The SDP leader also stressed that any coalition must be based on shared ideology and accountability.

“You must first confess your contribution to the problems we are facing today as a country before you can talk about coalition,” he said.

He noted that many politicians are driven by dependence on government patronage, positing how he persuaded his party leaders that remaining out of power was preferable to betraying Nigerians.

“Some people are incapable of being outside government for six hours because they are used to free cars, houses, and privileges.

“For me, if you cannot help the Nigerian people, let us not kill them. It is better not to enter government than to become enemies of the people,” he said.

2027: Former legislators back Tinubu for second term, endorse Barau for Kano governor

Members of the National Forum of former legislators have thrown their weight behind the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and endorsed the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, for the governorship race in Kano State.

The national coordinator of the forum, comprising former legislators at federal, state, and local government levels, Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, stated this during a courtesy visit to Senator Barau at the National Assembly in Abuja, recently.

He said they decided to endorse President Tinubu to enable him to complete the numerous developmental programmes and reforms he has initiated in the country over the past 30 months.

“We have come together as right-minded individuals who believe in this administration and have already established our position as a parliamentary support group for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We have also concurred with our state chapter, which has endorsed Senator Barau for the governorship race in Kano State,” he said.

He, on behalf of the convener, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, extended an invitation to Senator Barau to serve as a Special Guest of Honour at the forthcoming National Summit on National Unity and Nation Building, scheduled for January 24, 2026.

Responding, Senator Barau commended the forum for evolving from an informal to a formal group of former parliamentarians.

“This initiative is timely and necessary. What you’ve done is remarkable. It’s something that should be done, and I strongly support it.

“This is a time when people who have served in the National and State Assemblies need to come closer to the government and support it, as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is working hard to return our country to the path of prosperity. He needs the support of all in this regard,” he said.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the three unions at Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, has expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde following the appointment of new principal officers for the institution.

The unions—which include the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU)—conveyed their appreciation in a letter (reference AOPE/JAC/01/109) dated December 23 and addressed to the governor.

Governor Makinde recently appointed Prof. Jonathan Adedokun as Rector, Mrs. Akintunde Abosede as Registrar, and Mrs. Adejuwon Sekinat as Bursar of the polytechnic.

In their letter, the unions described the appointments as a “timely and thoughtful decision,” highlighting the administration’s commitment to strengthening institutional leadership, promoting stability, and advancing academic and administrative excellence in Oyo State’s polytechnic system.

The letter, which was sighted by The Nation reads in part, “The Polytechnic community has received this development with renewed confidence and optimism. We believe that these appointments will enhance effective governance, foster industrial harmony, and support the realization of the institution’s mandate in line with Your Excellency’s vision for education and human capital development in Oyo State.

“We express our sincere gratitude to Your Excellency for your continued support and dedication to the growth of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, and the education sector at large. We wish Your Excellency continued success in your service to the good people of Oyo State.”

Legal battle shadows European contractor as Nigeria’s energy projects stay on course

Nigeria’s ongoing energy projects remain on track, but rising legal pressure on a major European contractor operating in the country is drawing increased attention.

An Italian engineering firm, Tecnimont, involved in several Nigerian refinery and energy developments, is facing claims exceeding $2.2 billion following a ruling by Russian courts in favour of fertilizer producer EuroChem over a stalled industrial project.

It was gathered that the judgment covers unworked advance payments, interest and damages. EuroChem was said to have confirmed it is seeking to enforce the ruling across multiple jurisdictions.

According to report, legal proceedings have already commenced in India, where EuroChem has asked the courts to recognise the Russian judgment and approve its enforcement.

Although the litigation does not reference any Nigerian contracts and ongoing projects in the country are unaffected, it was gathered that the situation may have raised concerns given Nigeria’s reliance on a small pool of European contractors for large-scale infrastructure delivery.

In Nigeria, the company is involved in energy infrastructure critical to domestic fuel processing and industrial growth. These projects are central to reducing dependence on fuel imports, stabilising supply and easing inflationary pressures across the economy.

US strikes underscore need for urgent internal security reforms — Gbenga Hashim

…says external military actions won’t yield lasting results without governance overhaul

Presidential hopeful, Gbenga Hashim, has said the recent United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) elements operating within Nigeria underscore the urgent need for far-reaching internal security and governance reforms to achieve lasting peace.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Hashim argued that while external military interventions may temporarily weaken terrorist groups, they cannot substitute for decisive domestic reforms needed to address Nigeria’s deep-rooted security challenges.

He said the reported US action reflects growing international concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country, particularly in the northwest, warning that Nigeria’s size and strategic importance make sustained instability a global concern.

According to Hashim, his team had, since 2021, consistently warned that security modelling in the North-West pointed towards a dangerous trajectory, including the possible emergence of an IS-aligned enclave if urgent corrective measures were not taken.

He attributed the worsening insecurity to prolonged governance failures, deepening poverty and weakened state institutions, which he said have created fertile ground for extremist groups to thrive.

Hashim cautioned that the elevation of individuals who rationalize or enable extremism into positions of political influence further undermines counter-terrorism efforts and weakens the state’s capacity to respond decisively.

While acknowledging that international airstrikes could degrade terrorist capabilities in the short term, he stressed that such actions must be complemented by comprehensive internal reforms, improved governance and strengthened institutions to deliver sustainable results.

“The situation in the North-West is dire. Without urgent internal reforms and decisive leadership, external military actions will not produce lasting security outcomes,” Hashim said.

He concluded by urging the federal government to confront what he described as an existential security threat with courage and clarity, warning that Nigeria can no longer afford denial or half-measures.

Troops of the Joint Task Force Faruruwa have rescued an abducted person following a successful security operation along the Kano–Katsina border in the early hours of Sunday.

Rabiu Halilu, 38, was rescued and treated by the troops.

The army told The Nation that Halilu sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during captivity and was promptly evacuated to the JTF Faruruwa Medical Centre, where he was treated.

During the operation, the troops also recovered three motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing bandits and a number of cattle believed to have been rustled by the bandits.

Some of the motorcycles recovered were stained with blood, the army said.

Soldiers operating around Yankwada, acting on a credible tip-off about the movement of armed bandits from Daurawa, Kira, Katsina State, advancing towards the Kano axis were engaged in a fierce gunfight.

Sokoto bombing: Nigeria remains stable, says Edun

The federal government has assured investors, financial analysts, and international development partners that Nigeria remains peaceful, stable, and committed to economic progress despite concerns arising from the targeted joint security operation conducted in Sokoto on Christmas Day.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, gave the assurance in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, explaining that the collaborative mission between Nigerian security forces and the United States was strictly directed at terrorist elements threatening national safety and economic activity.

According to Edun, “What Nigeria is decisively confronting—alongside trusted international partners—is terrorism.” He stated that the context of the operation was crucial to understanding its broader economic implications. “This distinction is important, and it is fundamental to understanding the positive economic implications of recent actions,” he said.

Edun described the Sokoto operation as “precise, intelligence-led, and focused exclusively on terrorist elements that threaten innocent lives, national stability, and economic activity.”

He added that the move was designed to strengthen security rather than create uncertainty in financial or investment circles.

“Far from destabilising markets or weakening confidence, such actions strengthen the foundations of peace, protect productive communities, and reinforce the conditions required for sustainable growth. Security and economic stability are inseparable; every effort to safeguard Nigerians is, by definition, pro-growth and pro-investment,” the Finance Minister said.

He noted that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the country has recorded tangible progress in both security and economic reform, with measurable outcomes reflected in recent macroeconomic indicators.

“In the third quarter of 2025, Nigeria recorded GDP growth of 3.98 percent, following a strong 4.23 percent growth in Q2. We expect a stronger Q4 2025 GDP performance,” Edun said. He added that inflation has slowed for the seventh straight period and now sits below 15 per cent, which he attributed to coordinated fiscal and monetary measures that are improving price stability.

Edun said Nigeria’s financial markets remain steady, with domestic and international debt platforms operating efficiently under prudent fiscal management.

He recalled that over the past year, the country secured credit rating upgrades from Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s, which he described as independent validation of policy direction and reform outcomes.

“We have maintained fiscal discipline, prioritised efficiency, and protected macroeconomic stability—demonstrating resilience in the face of external shocks,” he said.

Referring to President Tinubu’s recent national address, Edun said the administration’s priority for 2026 is to consolidate the gains recorded in 2025, build stronger economic resilience, and sustain the momentum toward an economy driven by inclusive and durable growth.

“The actions we take today—on security, reforms, and fiscal discipline—are aligned with that goal,” he said.

Edun assured local and foreign investors that as markets reopen on Monday, December 29, 2025, confidence in Nigeria’s economic direction remains warranted.

“As markets reopen on Monday, 29 December 2025, investors can be confident that Nigeria remains focused, reform-driven, and committed to stability. The fundamentals are strengthening, the policy direction is clear, and the resolve of this administration—to protect lives, secure prosperity, and grow the economy—is unwavering,” he said.

He closed by reaffirming Nigeria’s investment outlook, stating: “Nigeria remains open for business, anchored in peace, and firmly focused on the future.”

FJSC shortlists 28 for appointment as judges of Federal High Court

…NJC to make final decision at January 13, 14 meeting

Twenty-eight lawyers have been shortlisted for appointment as judges of the Federal High Court out of the 62 applicants who passed the Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted by the court.

It was learnt that the 34 others were dropped owing to the strict application of the screening process put in place by the current leadership of the National Judicial Court (NJC).

In line with the new measure introduced by the NJC, the names of the 62 were published on September 17, inviting members of the public to submit feedback on nominees’ integrity, reputation, and suitability for judicial appointment.

The Nation gathered that the 34 nominees were dropped by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) after considering petitions and complaints from members of the public about the nominees.
