  • Odili proposes 70 years retirement age, other perks for professionals

Odili proposes 70 years retirement age, other perks for professionals

Former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili has appealed to the Federal Government to revisit the statutory retirement age for qualified professionals, suggesting 70 years peg.

Odili, who is the Founder and Pro-Chancellor of PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS), noted that experience has shown that those categories of professionals are retired almost at the peak of their career, as they do very well in their after retirement jobs.

He spoke at the 5th graduation ceremony of the institution, held at the School campus in the outskirts of Port Harcourt, the state capital yesterday.

Odili, who is also a medical doctor equally canvassed for increased salaries and allowances for qualified professionals medical personnel inclusive, to curb the disturbing menace of brain drain in the country.

He said, “Your Excellency, at this point, permit me to draw attention to what I consider a silent national crisis; the exodus of teachers and clinicians in medical education. Across the country, no state is spared. It’s a silent crisis.

“Your Excellency, ask any administrator of any teacher in your institution. They will tell you that we have yearning gaps of qualified professionals who should help us train these children.

“Take a special note at these two things: the retirement age for qualified professionals must be increased to at least 70 years. I can tell you from field experience, most of our professors in parliament are people who have retired from other universities. And they are doing very, very well. Thank you, sir.

“The number two thing that can be done, and done easily, is a review of their remuneration upwards. Sir, with all due respect, judges cannot draw cases for six months.

“Let me appeal to you, sir, and to the Executive Secretary, your Excellency, to do something. Let’s make our pasture greener than it is now,” he further appealed.

Speaking further, he lauded Fubara for taking steps to align with the Federal Government and enjoined members of the State Executive Council to support the decision.

“With what you have done as our government, the attention you pay to education and health, highly commendable. I’m sure no state in Nigeria can boast of the quality of zonal hospitals that you have built.

“We have visited here and there, and we know that your Zonal hospitals can compete with some teaching hospitals outside Rivers State. So keep it up; the emphasis of primary healthcare is excellent.

“And you’ve tailored your programme to align properly with what Mr. President is doing in the health sector. So far, not less than 500 infrastructural developments have taken place across the country. So the alignment of Rivers State with the federal government is perfect.

“We support it. We encourage it. Because our people are in the kitchen, like a national cake is baked.”

PUMS is a mono specialised institution, focused in the training of medical personnel. The university which began seven years ago boasts of having graduated over 300 medical workers, including over 100 qualified medical doctors in five convocation.

Also speaking at the event, Fubara hailed PAMO University for transforming the youths of the State, describing the university as the flagship of medical education in the country and the government is happy to partner with it.

Represented by the Deputy Governor of the State, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, Fubara said, “as a government,  we’re happy, the resources we’re spending in training the children are yielding profits, dividends. We’re delighted that the medical graduates will fill the gap in the medical practice.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the  Acting Vice Chancellor of the School, Prof. Smith Jaja noted that a total of 126 graduands from different facilities, with seven of them graduating with first class (Honours), 23 in the second class (upper), and 11 in second class (lower), categories.

Also, among the 86 medical graduands, seven of them obtained Distinction cumulative in 23 subjects, among others.

  • God will punish politicians who misuse power –Obaseki

God will punish politicians who misuse power –Obaseki

From the former Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has come a stern warning to politicians: God will punish those of you who abuse power.

He spoke in a video shared on his official X handle, where he reflected on leadership, governance and his years in office, stressing that politics should be about service, not personal enrichment.

According to him, leaders who focus on building wealth for themselves and their inner circles after winning elections have betrayed both God and the electorate.

Obaseki said: “If you are in politics just to get power, and when you get that power it is only for you, your friends and those close to you, then God will punish you.

“Power is given by God for a purpose. If God has given you power and you cannot use it to serve Him by serving the people and glorifying His name, then you have missed the essence of leadership.”

The erstwhile state chief executive said he had no regrets about his tenure, insisting that every major decision he took was guided by the interest of Edo people.

“I have no regrets about my time in office. If I am given another opportunity, I won’t change anything. In fact, I will do the same things even more, and I will do them quicker and faster,” he said.

Obaseki noted that while his administration recorded achievements in several sectors, particularly education, he wished some reforms had started earlier to allow more time for their impact to be felt.

“On education, for instance, I wish we had started some of the reforms earlier so that by the time we were leaving, people would have seen even more results,” he added.

He also defended his decision to support a successor, describing it as a deliberate effort to sustain policies and reforms initiated by his government.

“That is why we fought to bring in someone I know will continue. Everything I did was planned. All the actions I took were for the benefit of the people, not for myself,” Obaseki said.

The former governor warned against the dismantling of programmes introduced by previous administrations, arguing that such actions only end up hurting ordinary citizens.

“When I see people trying to destroy what we did, I say you are supposed to add to what you met, not destroy it,” he said.

“You are not hurting me. If you remove health insurance or close hospitals, it is not me that will suffer. It may be your brother or sister tomorrow who will need treatment from that hospital you refused to open.”

Obaseki further questioned the conscience of leaders who remain comfortable in power while citizens struggle to survive.

“How can somebody gain power today, and sleep well and be happy, seeing that so many people are not able to eat and suffer? What is the purpose? Because God has given you power, you don’t see the purpose,” he said.

Muka Ray: I started my career as kid actor in Taxi Driver

Veteran actor and filmmaker Muka Ray has opened up on his early entry into the Nigerian film industry, tracing his journey from being one of the first child actors to joining the pioneering generation that birthed the home video era after the death of his father.

“I started my career as a kid actor. I’m among the first set of kid actors in celluloid films, then. I played Adelove’s son in ‘Taxi Driver.’ I also acted in ‘Kadara’ and ‘Jayeisimi.’ But when my dad passed, I can proudly say that I was part of the first set of young actors to produce home videos,” he said.

Ray explained that home video production was unknown during his father’s lifetime, noting that the late Alade Aromire played a crucial role in changing the narrative by embracing video technology.

“There were no home videos during my dad’s time. I looked up to the late Alade Aromire then. He was the first to discover that one could shoot on video and be projected on a big screen. That’s when we started showing our films across,” he added.

Reflecting on the modest beginnings of video filmmaking in Nigeria, Ray disclosed that his first movie, ‘Dukia,’ was shot in 1989, barely months after his father’s death.

“My first movie was shot in 1989. My dad died in April 1989, and my film was shot in December 1989. It was titled ‘Dukia.’ Shooting a movie then cost just N2,500. It wasn’t difficult because we shot a film in just one day,” he recalled.
