Air strikes kill terrorists kingpin, others in Niger

Air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have killed scores of the terrorists including the dreaded terrorist and kidnap kingpin, Yellow Jambros, in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State

The air strikes launched by the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch on Wednesday, December 6, was part of military ouslaught against terrorists and bandits in the area.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, December 10.

Gabkwet said the terrorists met their end while attempting to cross Jikudna River in Galadima Kogo District, heading towards Wurukuvhi axis of Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

He said: “Prior to the strike, Yellow Jambro and his cohorts were trailed from Zamfara State into Niger State riding 13 motorcycles along the Kaduna-Niger State border, precisely heading towards Kusasu in Shiroro local government area of Niger State.

“At Kusasu, 5 other motorcycle-riding terrorists joined Yellow Jambros’ convoy, bringing the total number of motorcycles to 18, which then headed to the bank of River Jikudun.

“At the river bank, the terrorists and their 18 motorcycles boarded a large motor-powered canoe in an attempt to cross and link up with other terrorists across the river. It was at this point that the authorization to undertake a strike was given.

“The precision strike was adjudged effective as it neutralized Yellow Jambros and his colleagues, destroyed their motorcycles and sank the boat.”

According to NAF’s spokesperson, it was unusual for terrorists riding in a convoy of 18 motorcycles to travel in broad daylight.

He said: “It was apparent that Yellow Jambros and his cohorts had assumed that air strikes were suspended following the unfortunate incident at Tudun Biri in Kaduna State and wanted to exploit the perceived window of opportunity.”

“Yellow Jambros and his cohort have been responsible for several kidnappings and killings along the Abuja-Kaduna Road and in several communities in Kaduna, Niger, Katsina and Zamfara states.”

For instance, not only would men who molest their children be taken to court but the mothers would also be charged for negligence, we would no longer tolerate mothers whose children have been molested saying they don’t want their husbands to be taken to court because our interest is in the child.

CAN to FG, govs: donate relief packages to Nigerians in festive period

The Ojokoro chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, has called on both the federal and state governments to distribute relief packages during the festive season, taking into account the prevailing hardships in the country.

The CAN made the appeal during its Christmas Carol service at St. Christopher Catholic Church, themed “Wonderful Councillor,” with the text drawn from Isaiah 9:6 to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

The chairman of CAN Ojokoro chapter, Pastor. Dr. C.G Coker said: “We appeal to the government and officials in the government to release relief packages to christians for people to have what to celebrate Christmas with, because so many people are suffering and not many have what to eat, so the government should use Christmas as an avenue to share relief packages.”

In an interview, the chairman of Ojokoro L.C.D.A, Hamed Idowu Tijani (HID), urged christians and Nigerians to be of good conduct during and after the yuletide,

He said: “This is another year, I give glory to God Almighty who has made it possible for us to witness another one, as we all know this is a season that we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to me I call this period a period of reflection, we need to reflect on our lives, who is Jesus Christ, why was he born, and having discovered that this person was born just because of our sake, for him to have carried our sins away, so this is a period that we need to be more dedicated to the life of others, because if God has given us his own child to take our iniquities away, so this is a period to have reflection of what we are using our lives for, this is a period that we should dedicate more to humanity.”

Speaking on relief packages from the government, Tijani said it has been a sole responsibility of his administration to see to the welfare of the people regardless of the religion.

He said he doesn’t wait for Christmas or festive season before he gives out to people, saying that as it is his usual practice, he will see to it.

He stated: “The Administration we are talking about headed by my very self, we see the plight of our people as one of the cardinal point and when we are talking of the relief materials, it doesn’t have anything to with Christian, Muslim or others, the government is in interest of those that we govern so there’s no time that even at a period like this that we will not give put to the people, I don’t want to call it relief packages but giving out to the people in our local government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is not left behind, this is not our first time of doing it and we are going to do it better this time by the grace of God.”

  • FOI: Disclose how much oil Nigeria produces and exports daily, SERAP tells NNPC

FOI: Disclose how much oil Nigeria produces and exports daily, SERAP tells NNPC

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Group Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mele Kolo Kyari, to promptly publish details of barrels of oil Nigeria produces and exports daily and the total amounts of revenues generated from oil since the removal of subsidy on petrol in May 2023.

SERAP urged Kyari “to disclose how much of the revenues generated from oil have been remitted to the public treasury since the removal of subsidy on petrol.”

The demand was contained in a Freedom of Information (FoI) request dated December 9, 2023 and signed by SERAP’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had last week alleged that “the NNPCL is failing to remit enough foreign exchange into the treasury despite the removal of fuel subsidy,” asking: “Where is the money?.

Sanusi said: “There is a legitimate public interest in disclosing the information sought.”

The organization gave the NNPCL seven days to accede to its request failure of which the organization said it would take appropriate legal actions to compel the NNPCL to comply with its requests in the public interest.

SERAP said: “According to our information, the NNPCL has failed to disclose the amounts of barrels of oil the country produces and exports.

“The NNPCL has also reportedly failed to publish details of revenues generated from the production and exportation of oil and the amounts of revenues remitted to the public treasury as required by Nigerian laws.

“According to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, ‘It is only the NNPCL that can give the figures about how much oil we produce daily, how much we sell, and where the money is going. We are no longer paying subsidies so where are the dollars? Where is the money?

“The NNPCL has a legal responsibility to promote transparency and accountability in barrels of oil the country produces and exports every day, and to ensure that the revenues generated from such production and exportation are dully remitted to the public treasury.

Read Also: N1.5 trillion debt: FG sets up six contract review committees

“The NNPLC also has a legal responsibility to disclose details of payment of N11 trillion subsidy.”

SERAP urged the NNPCL  to disclose details of payment of N11 trillion as subsidy, and to clarify allegations that the corporation has failed to remit revenues generated from oil to the public treasury since the removal of subsidy on petrol.

“Opacity in the amounts of barrels of oil the country produces and exports daily, the revenues generated and remitted to the public treasury would have negative impacts on the fundamental interests of the citizens and the public interest.

“Transparency would ensure that the revenues are not diverted into private pockets, and increase public trust that the money would be used to benefit Nigerians.”

The letter, read in part: “The public interest in publishing the information sought outweighs any considerations to withhold the information.

“SERAP is seriously concerned that years of allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the oil sector and entrenched impunity of perpetrators have undermined public trust and confidence in the NNPCL.

“Ensuring transparency and accountability in the operations of the NNPCL would improve the enjoyment by Nigerians of their right to natural wealth and resources.

“SERAP is concerned that despite the country’s enormous oil wealth, ordinary Nigerians have derived very little benefit from oil money primarily because of widespread grand corruption, and the culture of impunity of perpetrators.

“Combating the corruption epidemic in the oil sector would alleviate poverty, improve access of Nigerians to basic public goods and services, and enhance the ability of the government to meet its human rights and anti-corruption obligations.”
