    COP28: Debbie Shokoya defends Toke Makinwa for attending summit

    Popular Nollywood actress, Debbie Shokoya has taken to social media to defend media personality, Toke Makinwa amid backlash of attending the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai.

    Toke had earned criticism after a video of her attending the event alongside President Bola Tinubu surfaced online.

    Many had assumed that the media personality was dating a politician, hence, her presence at the high-profile event.

    Defending her, Debbie noted how Nigerians are fond of giving hardworking women who aren’t married unnecessary titles based on their assumptions.

    Debbie stated that she couldn’t understand the hate as she questioned why people felt Toke was undeserving of such honour.

    She noted how the media personality works hard as she slammed netizens for crediting her success to a man.

    Debbie wrote: “Please why do people think Toke Makinwa doesn’t deserve something though? I feel like it’s so unfair!!! This is someone who has been working hard for years. So, people choose to shove aside this hard work and put the credit on men!!

    “Being unmarried is a sin in Nigeria. Wow!!! I still wouldn’t understand the hate!!! You people find a way to give hardworking women who aren’t married, unnecessary titles based on your assumptions!!! Why pls??? ‼

    “What Are You Telling The Young Generation? That being married is an achievement and will free you from people unnecessarily judging you and your wins? Make it make sense pls.”

    Khloe condemns natural hair, minimalist makeup

    BBNaija reality star, Busayo Abiri, popularly known as Khloe has strongly come against those who would flaunt their natural hair and moderate make-up to a high-profile event. 

    During a recent interview on the Bhad and Boujee podcast hosted by OAP Moet Abebe and Tolanibaj, the reality star condemned women’s natural hair.

    When asked about her take on natural hair and wigs, Khloe affirmed that the former is only good when within the house and neighbourhood.

    While bashing women who prefer to be minimalist with their makeup, the former BBNaija housemate further added that wigs are a better option, particularly for events.

    She said: “Your natural hair is good for church programs, pick your kids at school, but don’t bring it to my event. Why would I want to wear an expensive outfit, at least, I’d do a ponytail. They do something that pisses me off, they will now do small makeup saying they are minimalists.”

    Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Mercy Aigbe has narrated how her sexual harassment experience almost cost her career in the movie industry.

    In a recent interview with ‘Your View’ on TVC, Mercy Aigbe recalled how she had auditioned for a role with a producer who offered her a minor role instead of the one she had auditioned for.

    When she questioned this, the producer said she needed to be close to him to be considered for the role she had originally wanted.

    She said: “I once met a producer in Surulere, and I expressed to him how much I would love to act. He told me he had an upcoming film, and invited me to his office for an audition. I passed three stages of the audition. After the last audition, I was given a minor role. I told him that was not the character I was auditioning for, and he replied that the director said he did not know me, and that was why he said I should be close to him (the producer).”

    Mercy Aigbe felt this was inappropriate and that she was being sexually harassed.

    She narrated how the producer tried to touch her inappropriately and how she reacted by ripping up the script and leaving the office in tears.

    She said she felt disrespected and that this experience made her question whether she wanted to be an actress anymore.

    She explained that she had left a well-paying job to pursue her dream of acting and was a single mother at the time, so this incident was a major setback for her.

    She recalled: “He had been making passes at me before then, but he did not come out clean to me until that day. He then stood up and tried to touch me. I was very upset, and I told him he could not do that to me because I had earned the role.

    Famous indigenous rapper, Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru, popularly known as Reminisce, has recounted his first-ever rejection in the music industry.

    The ‘Ponmile’ crooner said his first major rejection was when a radio station rejected his and singer 9ice’s CDs because they performed their music mostly in the Yoruba language.

    He disclosed this in a recent interview with Zikoko.

    Reminisce said: “My first major rejection was with 9ice on the Island at a radio station where we went to submit our music CDs for airplay, and the feedback we got was that we would never make it.

    “They said 9ice was singing like Babalawo (native doctor) cos he sings in Yoruba.

    “The other guy told me: ‘Why am I rapping like a buffoon, can’t I see Ruggedman? He said that we should both go back and look for something to do with our lives and be better.

    “That was my first major rejection. I will never forget it, even 9ice I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten it.”

    N1.5 trillion debt: FG sets up six contract review committees

    The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has established six committees to verify the authenticity of the N1.5 trillion debt incurred by the federal government for road construction, expressing concern about previous administrations’ inability to address it.

    The committees assigned to the geopolitical zones were tasked to examine all outstanding certified certificates’ debts generated both before and after May 29th, 2023.

    In a statement issued on Saturday, December 9, the minister’s chief press secretary, Uchenna Orji, revealed that the committees were established after a budget defence session between the minister and the ministry’s directors preparatory to the defence of the 2023 and 2024 budgets before the National Assembly joint Committee on Works, where Umahi reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to road infrastructure development in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

    Orji stated that the minister expressed worry over the substantial debts stemming from unpaid certificates inherited from the previous administration, amounting to a current total of N1.5 trillion.

    Highlighting the necessity for contract review in light of inflation, the minister was quoted as emphasizing the Ministry’s acknowledgement of the challenges, while urging contractors owed by the Federal government to engage the Committee specific to their zone for a thorough review of their concerns, as both factors were identified as crucial issues requiring resolution for progress.

    The statement reads in part: “The committees will also review the approved and unapproved variation of prices and all augmentations that were approved or are yet to be approved and make recommendations to the Ministry’s management.

    “The Ministry has exposed these debts and all reviews in the Ministry to Mr. President’s economic team and also to the Federal Executive Committee on road sector funding.

    “It is believed that the internal works through these constituted committees will help them to use external consultants to re-verify the works so that concrete decisions will be made to move the Ministry forward.

    “Contractors who are being owed are requested to approach these committees with all documents to back up their claims from Tuesday 12th, 2023 to Friday, 22nd of December 2023 from 9 am to 7 pm at the Honourable Minister’s Conference Room, 1st floor, Federal Ministry of Works, Headquarters, Mabushi Abuja.

    “The Minister again thanked Mr. President very highly as well as the National Assembly and pledged their commitment in using judiciously whatever fund allocated to the Ministry and such funds must impact on the road infrastructure improvement.”
