“With the project, we formed a coalition of community based organisations, empowering them and building their capacity on how to track climate resilient funds using the follow the money model and ensure they engage with their Ministeries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s) to find out the measures that the government took to ensure that what happened last year does not repeat itself again.

He spoke at the weekend during a funeral programme in honour of Amananaowei of Ebedebiri community, Dr. Anderson John Eseimokunoh, at Ebedebiri in Sagbama Local Government.

Represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the governor said education remained the most dependable means of developing any society and its cultural values.

A statement yesterday by the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, quoted the governor as saying that no well-educated person would abandon his or her culture, adding that such a person would rather contribute towards cultural advancement.

He described the late Eseimokumoh as a traditional family man who portrayed the rich cultural heritage of the Ijaw, despite the enviable height he attained in Western education and learning in general.

Diri said as an accomplished scholar, the late royal father became a chartered accountant at a time it was considered an impossible feat for an Ijaw man to achieve.

He said as a politician, Eseimokumoh was a man loved by many across party lines due to his benevolent disposition to all, and his non-discriminatory way of handling issues.

Calling on monarchs to live in their domains, to provide leadership for their people, the governor commended the Eseimokumoh family and the Ebedebiri community for giving a befitting burial to their departed father and paramount ruler.

In his sermon titled: ‘Whither Thou Goest?’, the General Overseer of Liberation Power Ministry, Odede Stephen, admonished Christians to be mindful of their eternal destination in their daily choices and actions.

Anchoring his message from Luke Chapter 16, verses 19 to 22, Odede said man is a spirit, who has a soul and life in a body, adding that man’s only guarantee for peace after this material life is to make Jesus Christ his Lord and Saviour and serve God till the end.

    • Igbo captains of industry embrace economic plans

Captains of industry and prospective investors of Southeast extraction have expressed their readiness to key into the investment and economic growth plans of the Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.

They expressed satisfaction about the administration’s effort at rallying local domestic business leaders and de-risking the state’s business environment, stressing that investors go to where the risks are less and return on investment (ROI) is high.

Mbah stressed on synergic regional cooperation for development, saying people could only get respect outside their land proportionate to the socio-economic growth in their own homeland.

The business moguls spoke in Enugu at the weekend during the inauguration of the Enugu Investors Network, an initiative of Enugu State Government for mobilising domestic investment.

One of the business leaders at the event, which also served as the inaugural roundtable of the network, Dr. Sam Onyishi, CEO of Peace Group of Companies, hailed the governor for improved security.

He urged Ndigbo to think home, emphasising that the long-term security of Igbo investment could only be guaranteed in their homeland.

Onyishi said: “The government is thinking what I was thinking. The first thing this government did was to work on the Monday sit-at-home. Two years ago, we did not go to work for 62 days. Last year, we did not go to work for 67 days. This year was going to be worse than that.

“Why I said the government is thinking what I was thinking is because on the 23rd of November 2013, I told my family that I was not going to make any investment that is worth more than N1 billion outside the Southeast.

“I am happy with this government. This is the first time anybody is inviting me in Enugu State to come and have this kind of heart-to-heart discussion with the governor seated too. The other ones were a kind of ‘come, talk and go home.’ But this one is action. The governor says, ‘this is what we have and what we are going to do together’. It is straight to the point.

“We must be plain and frank with ourselves. So, I do not want to talk about what Nigeria is and what Nigeria is not. As far as I am concerned, I am made for where I come from. Charity begins at home.”

The Chairman of Coscharis Group, Sir Cosmas Maduka, said the firm had since turned homeward, investing in agriculture, among others, in Anambra State and would be eager to explore any of the outlined investment opportunities in Enugu State.

Governor Mbah, who recalled how the Premier of the defunct Eastern Region, Dr. Michael Okpara, turned the region economy around by assembling personalities, said the narratives of insecurity, economic underdevelopment, laxity and lack of ambitious development initiatives could be changed, as they did not represent Southeast people.

  • Lagos to sanitise chieftaincy processes

    Lagos to sanitise chieftaincy processes

The Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Community Affairs and Rural Development has trained chieftaincy officers in the local government areas on requirements and procedures for processing chieftaincy documents.

Commissioner for Local Government, Community Affairs and Rural Development, Kayode Roberts, noted that the training was important in order to avoid unnecessary rifts and disorder, especially in the appointment and ratification of chiefs and baales.

According to him, it was necessary to educate the chieftaincy officers on what the law says, as well as the general requirements of processing chieftaincy documents so they can cascade the knowledge down to the communities.

He said: “This interactive session is a forum to educate chieftaincy officers on the process of documenting chieftaincy matters, as well as foster access to additional and sensitive information on ways that traditional institutions in the state can assist in governance to promote peace and engender economic development.

“Owning to the delicate nature of matters that concern Obaship and chieftaincy in Lagos, and the need to ensure that every action is taken within the purview of the law, it behooves on chieftaincy officers in the state to learn new trends in crisis management and conflict resolution as it concerns chieftaincy matters. Hence, this interactive session.”

Director of Chieftancy Affairs in the ministry, Lukmon Folami, urged the participants to work in tandem with the government’s interest by educating the communities on the position of the law. According to him, it is important they step down the knowledge gotten from the session so they can avoid unnecessary rancour.

“It is important that you remain on the side of the law and government. Don’t interfere in their internal affairs, and don’t be influenced to go beyond your constitutionally-recognised duties, for instance, signing the financial responsibility letter. Your sole responsibility is to be a liaison officer between them and the government, ensuring there is smooth communication and interaction,” he added.

FAAN moves to eradicate passengers’ extortion at airports

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Kabir Yusuf Mohammed said the authority has stepped up her game at ensuring  that passengers who pass through  airports are not extorted  by staff and other  agencies of government that work at airports.

FAAN , he said, is engaging  the services of “mystery staff” at the four international airports of the country to stem the ugly tide.

Mohammed said  the responsibility of these ‘mystery staff’ is to take note of the activities of staff at the airports and report same  to management.

The MD made this known during a recent one-day sensitization programme on ACI Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Initiative organised by the Directorate of Airport Operations at the Conference room of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMA).

In his keynote address, the MD expressed displeasure at the poor reputation of Murtala Muhammed International Airport due to extortion of passengers and warned that anyone  caught in such act this Yuletide season will face disciplinary consequences.

He said that travellers are discouraged from flying through the international terminal of the Lagos airport because  of extortion.

The MD challenged representatives of all the government  agencies  that operate at the airport namely; Customs, Immigration, Quarantine ,Police, and all others to be at their absolute best when carrying out their day-to-day activities.

He reminded everyone  that there are active cameras  everywhere  and whosoever  is caught doing anything  that will bring the FAAN  into disrepute would  be sanctioned.

He noted  that all these agencies  that work at the airport  are involved  in this breach and said that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is not going to tolerate this embarrassment any further.

The MD/CEO of FAAN  concluded  by encouraging everyone to improve the reputation of the airport and the country at large by being  courteous and respectful  to the travelling  public at this season.

He encouraged  the spirit  of collaboration noting, “we are one airport  and if there’s  any wrongdoing , people don’t bother to know which agency did the wrong. They only know  the  airport  where they were wronged.”

  • Energy security, asset diversification crucial to economic growth – stakeholders

Energy security, asset diversification crucial to economic growth – stakeholders

Stakeholders in the Nigerian petroleum industry and financial service sector have provided insights and workable solutions to the challenges facing the nation’s economy and businesses.

The stakeholders spoke at the Lagos Business School’s Modular Executive MBA 9th cohort (MEMBA 9) Graduation Dinner.

Speaking on the topic: “Politics of Energy Transition”, the co-founder and Pioneer Chief Executive Officer, Platform Petroleum Limited and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc, Austin Avuru, advocates the prioritisation of energy security among African nations while particularly urging the Nigerian government to optimise the country’s oil and gas resources before committing to its energy transition agenda.

Avuru pressed on the significance of energy, saying: “Access to energy is crucial not only for the attainment of health and education outcome but also for reducing the cost of doing businesses and for unlocking economic potential and creating jobs.”

According to him, besides climate change, poverty, hunger, diseases, and conflicts are existential threats to African nations as they are linked to gross underdevelopment.

He insisted with the worldwide pursuit of “energy security” the continent “must achieve sustainable energy security within the resources available” to them.

He stated: “Carbon emissions reduction has been the key factor that all the energy transition argument has been hinged on. Most countries have focused on addressing energy security and optimizing the available resources while driving the transition. Every country will address these two things before coming to what some people think is the residual matter of reduction of carbon emission.

“We must, therefore, do the following; ramp up production and build up reserves of oil and gas, reduce the per-barrel production cost, build internal refining capacity, build industrial/manufacturing capacity to use oil and gas as feedstock intensify gas to power schemes, maximise gas to methanol, gas to fertilizer and gas to petrochemical schemes.”

This, he emphasised, given the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) ongoing in Dubai.

“African nations need to collectively prioritise convenience, affordability, and reliability to reach a quality of life enjoyed by the industralised world, which has powered its economic growth and achieved prosperity using hydrocarbons.”

Speaking on “Finance, Economy and Asset Management”, Corporate Executive in the financial services industry, Odiri Ogini, explained how some major factors of the outgoing year like “cash crunch, Naira redesign, inflation” greatly impacted people’s wealth.

Ogini disclosed the greatest challenge of every asset manager is how to sustain competitive returns.

“Everyone wants to earn against inflation, the greatest challenge for investors.”

She, however, admitted that the equity market in the last 5 to 10 days has done “well due to the new CBN policies.”

On asset and portfolio diversification, the market leader in Asset Management commended the planned recapitalisation of deposit money banks (DMBs) as announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria towards a $1 trillion economy of Nigeria by 2023.

According to her: “With the CBN’s soon-to-be established recapitalization plan for banks, we are likely to see mergers in 2024 in order to achieve the Apex bank’s target.

“The Federal Government’s target of a $1 trillion economy in the next seven years gives us a sense of direction and strategies to follow for its attainment.”

To the MEMBA 9 graduates, Ogini admonished them to be agents of change regardless of where they find themselves, employing the mosquito analogy.

She stated: “Irrespective of where you are, you can make a difference. It’s all within your capacity to. If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try going to bed with a mosquito.”

The host, Ayodeji Olukeye while congratulating MEMBA 9 graduates, shared the reason for the failure of many Nigerian businesses.

He argued that businesses fail because people are not prepared.

He noted: “So, if you are doing that and suddenly or accidentally make it big in the business which you know you are not prepared for it. You will eventually fail. So preparation is the major reason why Nigerian businesses fail.”

Oyintiloye, however, said that the approved farm input subsidy by the federal government was timely, as it would reduced the food inflation in the country.

Oyintiloye said the programme of National Agriculture Growth, which was aimed at supporting farmers through training on good agricultural practices and provide certified inputs would enhance food production.

The APC chieftain said that with the various agricultural interventions by the president, there would be a positive changes in the prices of food and there would be surpluses in the coming days.

He said the president’s passion for food security and his quick intervention on fertilizers, improved seeds, mechanisation and grants in both long and short run would yield a desirable result to ensure that food production round the year.

Oyintiloye appealed to the Federal Government to relate directly with subsistence and large scale farmers, among other stakeholders in agriculture business through their various associations.

He said this would enable them to access various government intervention programmes without any form of hindrance and make Nigeria self-sufficient in term of agriculture produce, thereby making prices of food items affordable.
