    Lawyers get training

Some capital offence defence lawyers have been trained on the proper way to do their job by Hope Behind Bars Africa.

At the workshop for the capital defence lawyers in Nigeria and Ghana themed, ‘Defending Persons Facing Death Penalty’ funded in part by the Makwanyane Institute Stewardship Grant,  Hope Behind Bars Africa  Executive Director (ED), Mrs. Funke Adeoye, said: “It is important when representing our clients to know if they were in the right state of mind when the offence was committed because, according to law, you have to consider the mental intent to commit the crime. So, we are looking at what the signs can be seen in our clients that might help us suspect that there might have been a mental health illness and we need to bring an expert to evaluate the person.’

“We also know that, as lawyers, we take in a lot of traumatic experiences of suspects and victims, so the question is how do we ensure that these things we take in does not affect our state of mind as lawyers, so we brought experts to help look at these issues.”

“We want to see how we can build a community of practice of capital defenders in Nigeria, who will be able to jump on the efforts of the abolishment of mandatory death penalty, outside the training to begin to look at the issues, gaps and work with the government to ensure that clients that are facing the death penalty are effectively represented and everyone gets justice.

“What we want to achieve is to ensure that a person accused of committing a capital offence is adequately represented by virtue of the Constitution which gives everyone the right to justice and that is inclusive of the victim of the crime.”

Director, The Inclusion Project (TIP), Pamela Okoroigwe said the idea is to train and equip capital defenders with the right skills and best practices for defending capital offenders effectively in court because some lawyers really don’t have the right skills.

She added: “We hope that when the trained lawyers return to their communities and law firms, they will be able to train others so we can have that critical line of lawyers that we are looking for.

“The goal is to ensure that our clients do not end up on the gallows so we want to ensure our lawyers are making use of all the options available to them. Please bargaining where there is an overwhelming evidence, clemency where maybe all the options have been exhausted or even when they haven’t and you want to try it.”

On the aspect of Mental health, Founder of the sunshine series, Aisha Buba said when most people in the country hear of mental health, they assume only people roaming on the streets can be put in such categories.

She said the COVID-19 out break showed us that everybody has the potential to develop a mental health condition, either depression or anxiety.

Buba added: “Most times when we hear about mental health, we think about the person that we see roaming on the streets, that’s all but that’s not it.There is a wide range, a lot of things fall on their mental health in fact, stress burnout. They all fall under mental health.”

  • Why entrepreneurship is  key to human development, by Obi Cubana

Why entrepreneurship is  key to human development, by Obi Cubana

Entrepreneurship is the most suitable pathway to sustainable human development in Africa, Cubana Group Chairman and foremost  entrepreneur Dr. Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly  called  Obi Cubana, has said. This, according to him,  the continent contends with the quest to grow its economy and address the demands of rising youth population on the continent.

Iyiegbu   spoke at a  lecture he delivered  at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Abuja, at the weekend. H spoke on  the conference theme: “Globalization and regional economic integration: Implications for sustainable development in Africa”.

He noted that the self-employed persons and players in the micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly being recognized as the backbone of economies around the world, including developing and developed countries.

“SMEs currently represent about 90 percent of businesses and employ up to two-thirds of the global workforce.  In developing countries, such as Nigeria, the percentage of self-employed workers, many of whom operate in the informal sector, are expected to increase over the next couple of years”

On Sustainable Development, the renowned businessman said that the ultimate aim of sustainable development is “to build a society where available resources and the living conditions continue to meet the needs of human beings without undermining the integrity of the planet and the stability of natural systems” He went on to state that the overall aim is to achieve the right balance between economic development, environmental protection, and social well-being.

On the role of entrepreneurship in sustainable Human Development, he explained that gone were the days when entrepreneurs were perceived as persons who were just interested in building their businesses and growing and increasing personal wealth or fortunes. According to him, this is because the businesses are established and run by entrepreneurs today often serve to provide services that will also have a positive impact on the economy, as well as the general well-being of the population, hence entrepreneurs play a vital and significant role in the economic development of societies.

“Around the world, entrepreneurs are given credit for growing and diversifying the economy and for contributing to wealth creation. Thus, entrepreneurship, as a mindset, automatically lends itself to sustainable human development.

“This is because the entrepreneur is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve societal conditions. They do this by providing innovative goods and services or devising new methods that will reduce detrimental activities, while also generating profits for the entrepreneur.

“By always thinking about doing things in new and better ways, entrepreneurship is highly relevant to any country genuinely interested in sustainability.

“From the business perspective, entrepreneurship (and an entrepreneurial mindset) can benefit sustainable human development. It can allow for quicker response to business opportunities that address the needs of the people.

“Thus, there is a consensus that entrepreneurship plays a vital role in sustainable human and economic development in many ways, especially through job creation, alleviation and eradication of poverty, improved living standard, and society impact through Corporate Social Responsibility” he highlighted

He emphasized that entrepreneurship offers a sure pathway to sustainable human development in Africa. It can be achieved through the creation of jobs that can help reduce unemployment and create wealth for citizens, stating that this will ultimately lead to the eradication of poverty and an overall improvement in the quality of life of citizens as measured by various economic and social indices.

“To achieve these, however, the many obstacles, such as lack of access to finance, lack of training, and poor state of municipal and technological infrastructure, which currently constitute challenges to entrepreneurship in the continent of Africa, must be addressed.

“At the Cubana Group, we have continued to make our modest contributions to sustainable human development through poverty alleviation, wealth creation, youth empowerment, scholarship schemes, and provision of seed funding for young entrepreneurs and innovators” he stated.

  • Group to APC: caution Deputy Speaker over ‘anti-party activities’

Group to APC: caution Deputy Speaker over ‘anti-party activities’

Some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from Abia State have called on the party to caution the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, over alleged anti-party activities.

The members on the platform of Progressives League of APC Youths Voters are asking President Bola Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to call Kalu in the interest of the party.

At a press conference in Abuja, National Coordinator of the group, Usman Shuaibu, said it had become an embarrassment that some leaders of the APC engage in anti-party activities, castigating the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who has given her all to ensure the victory of the party in the last general election in the state.

But the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Levinus Nwabughiogu, denied the allegation.

Kalu said he shared a healthy relationship with the minister.

Addressing reporters, Shaibu said: “The most recent is the sponsored campaign of calumny against Hon. NKeiruka Onyejeocha who flew the party’s flag in Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the February 25, National Assembly elections. She is the Minister of Labour and Employment (State).

“It is no longer news that Nkeiruka, who is our party’s flagbearer, was robbed of her victory by the Labour Party in Abia State, where they deployed unethical means during the Presidential and National Assembly elections against the APC. Recalled that some APC groups raised the alarm calling for the restoration of her mandate which she vigorously pursued at the tribunal and won.

“Since her victory at the tribunal, which is the ultimate triumph of APC in Abia State, some highly placed persons in the National Assembly have unleashed a campaign of calumny against her person using mushroom Organisations to blackmail Hon. NKeiruka Onyejeocha and the APC in a bid to bully her to abandon her victory at the Appeal Court.’’

“We make bold to say that we have identified the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Benjamin Kalu, who sees the victory of the Minister as a political threat instead of a blessing as the sponsor of the blackmail against Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

Read Also: Lagos introduces new transport programme as commissioner seeks support

“Kalu has become so desperate that he has resorted to using the name and office of the President Tinubu to blackmail the Minister who is currently focused on her national assignments.

“Kalu has done everything possible to set even the Speaker of House Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas and other highly placed members of the party against her.

“Everytime he fails in his bid to raise dust where there is none, he deploys new evil machinations to bring Nkeiruka down.

“We are worried that, why should the victory of the APC and Hon Onyejeocha in Abia State become a nightmare for Benjamin Kalu? Is there something more to it that he is not telling the APC or his political associates?

“We know how some highly placed persons who are the major beneficiary of the APC worked against the party in the last Presidential elections in the guise of religion and tribal sentiment, thereby reducing the winning votes of our great Party.”

Warning against the implications of such a campaign against committed APC members, Shaibu said such will grow to affect the success of the party in the 2027 general elections.

“We recommend a disciplinary action against the deputy speaker, Mr Kalu and his accomplices to serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to indulge in such dangerous anti-party activity in the near future.

“We call on the National Chairman of our great party, Dr bdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is reconciling and repositioning the party for a better tomorrow to immediately call Mr. Benjamin Kalu to order before he destroys the party completely in Abia State.

“Kalu is not from Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency neither is he a member of the Labour Party. One wonders what is His problem with the victory of Nkeiruka and the APC. This has proven that some members of the party actually engaged in anti party activities to subdue the APC from being declared winner of the House of Representatives election in Abia State.

“We equally call on President Bola Tinubu to call the deputy speaker to order as the APC remains one united family, a united force that will lead us to victory in 2027.

“And if this campaign of calumny continues, we shall have no option than to occupy the National Assembly to demand the resignation of the deputy speaker, an action that would last until we achieve our demand. The APC belongs to all of us and we shall continue to maintain its supremacy.”

    • Nordica plans first HIFU centre in Abuja

An In Vitro  Fertiliser (IVF) clinic, the Nordica Fertility Centre is set to introduce High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to its clinic in Abuja, the first of its kind in the nation’s capital.

It has also re-echoed the need for the regulation of human organ donation and IVF practice in the country, while condemning the misconceptions being peddled against the IVF practice.

The Medical Director of the clinic, Dr Abayomi Ajayi, said the HIFU technology was deployed in Nordica’s Lagos clinic in July 2021 where 385 patients have been treated.

According to him, the HIFU technology, which is a minimally invasive medical procedure that uses ultrasound waves, would be deployed mainly to treat uterine fibroids without surgery.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja over the weekend, Ajayi said Nordica is the first and only IVF clinic in the West African sub-region that is deploying the HIFU technology to treat uterine fibroid without surgery which also comes very helpful for IVF patients with such conditions.

Ajayi said the introduction of HIFU in the nation’s capital was in furtherance of his commitment to provide solution alternatives and relief to people undergoing complicated and complex medical care.

He said the Centre is also using the extension of the technology to Abuja to mark the11th anniversary of Nordica Fertility Centre in Nigeria.

According to him, the HIFU technology would be launched in Abuja in the first quarter of next year.

Ajayi, who spoke on IVF, however, advocates knowledge of the medical procedure.

He said Nordica is embarking on a massive awareness campaign about IVF in Nigeria because of the lack of knowledge about the issue and the secrecy surrounding it.

He said the failure or success of IVF is a delicate issue that must be fully understood by intending patients and couples.

“We know that infertility is one of the toughest challenges couples can face.

“No matter how strong anyone is, it tests your relationships, it tests who you are, it tests your faith in God. And when you do the IVF treatment again it fails, it tests everything again. So it’s important to understand that patients are also prepared for this.

“We have gone beyond the days of whether IVF is possible in Nigeria, we know it is possible, we know we have thousands of babies through the process but the next step will now be how to make people understand that there’s a failure rate.

“This is because we have people who have seen couples whose marriages break down even after a successful process, which shows that not only practitioners but also the consumers that we are not paying enough attention to mental health to the effects on relationships,” he added.

While regretting the unsuccessful passage of a bill to IVF regulation at the National Assembly, Ajayi said the lack of knowledge of the issue, the reality of unscrupulous persons that might want to take advantage of it while putting the career and lives investments of the practitioners at jeopardy, has made it imperative to regulate the sector.

He, however, acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Lagos State branch of the association, and others to see the laws birthed.
