  • Kebbi’s Hajj facility and MURIC’s false outrage

Kebbi’s Hajj facility and MURIC’s false outrage

    • By Dankani Sani

When I first read the concern raised by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) with respect to a certain N10 billion facility which it claimed the Kebbi State government deployed to sponsor intending Hajj pilgrims for the 2026 hajj, my mind skipped a bit. Like many readers encountering the claim for the first time, I paused.

On the surface, MURIC’s argument appeared persuasive. The organisation went to great lengths to list what N10 billion could achieve if invested in roads, education, healthcare and other public goods. In that moment, I found myself agreeing with its arithmetic and even sharing the disbelief it tried to provoke. Why, one would ask, would a responsible governor abandon such pressing needs for what was framed as religious indulgence?

In hindsight, that initial reaction was precisely the outcome MURIC sought. The article was long, emotionally charged and carefully packaged to provoke outrage, all while presenting outright falsehoods as settled facts. To reinforce its argument, MURIC wrapped itself in the garb of piety, projecting an image of a principled organisation defending Muslim interests against alleged governmental excess.

The problem, however, is that beneath the moral grandstanding lay a disturbing absence of due diligence. By that single article, MURIC revealed itself as a trigger-happy organisation, the kind that is impatient with verification, allergic to context, and overly enamoured with the attention that media sermonising brings. Reading that article, it becomes hard not to see MURIC in a whole new light as an organisation that projects outrage first, then facts later; if at all.

But, what are the facts of the matter? Well, for those genuinely interested in the truth, here is it! The N10 billion in question was neither a sponsorship nor a grant. Oh yes! It was a short-term facility advanced through the Kebbi State Pilgrims Welfare Agency to enable intending pilgrims meet the payment deadline set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), which fixed December 5 as the deadline for Hajj fare remittances.

The decision to take this route was reached because, as of that deadline, only about 2,000 pilgrims from Kebbi State had fully paid their fares. Approximately 1,300 others were at the risk of losing their Hajj slots, not because they were unwilling or incapable of paying, but because their payments were incomplete at that specific point in time. Without the facility, they would have lost their seats, and losing those slots would have meant a permanent forfeiture of their opportunity to perform the Hajj in 2026.

It was, therefore, to prevent that outcome, that the Kebbi State government approved a temporary financial intervention, clearly structured as a loan. The understanding was straightforward and documented: the money would be repaid within two weeks once the affected pilgrims completed their payments. While this may appear like a leap of faith; it was actually a calculated administrative decision grounded in realistic expectations.

And these expectations were met, because, as of December 16, 2025, just 11 days after the intervention, the entire N10 billion had been repaid by the intending pilgrims. And, the facility was fully returned to government coffers, with no loss of public funds, no hidden subsidy and no financial burden transferred to the state. Every detail of the transaction is verifiable through bank and agency records, including the exact dates the loan was granted and repaid.

This naturally leads to a more important question MURIC failed or refused to ask: why did the state government intervene in the first place? The answer lies in Kebbi’s peculiar socio-economic reality, a context MURIC seemed completely oblivious to. Many of the affected pilgrims are farmers and small-scale traders whose liquidity peaks around late November and early December, following harvests and seasonal sales. In this sense, therefore, their original challenge was timing, not inability.

Would MURIC have preferred that such pilgrims who were willing, eligible and financially capable lose their chance to perform a core religious obligation simply because of a short-term cash-flow mismatch? If so, that position would be not only rigid but also deeply insensitive to the lived realities of ordinary Muslims.

Thankfully, timely thinking by the state government ensured these ordinary folks did not lose their slots, and Kebbi State now has 3,629 slots, fully paid by the intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj, ranking second nationally. As a result, the state has been included in the first batch of states to be airlifted at the commencement of Hajj operations. All this without spending a dime of public funds. These are the concrete results that the intending pilgrims and indeed majority of the people of the state are very impressed with and not some tasteless press statements.

It is also important to state clearly that Kebbi is not alone in adopting this temporary financial approach. States like Gombe and others have used similar measures effectively in past Hajj operations. Here then, lies the real question: why did MURIC single out Kebbi? Why the selective outrage? Only MURIC can answer this question!

Equally troubling was the attempt to frame the issue as evidence of infrastructural neglect. By sermonising about what N10 billion could do for roads and hospitals, MURIC subtly implied that Kebbi State is failing in governance. This impression is false and must be corrected.

Let it be known, that under the leadership of Comrade Nasir Idris, Kebbi State has witnessed unprecedented infrastructure development. From long-abandoned road projects like the entire corridor leading to the Danko–Wasagu road to multiple interventions across sectors, the state has recorded visible, verifiable progress. Not only are these not abstract claims; they are projects citizens have seen and used. It is therefore difficult to believe that MURIC’s intervention was genuinely about governance outcomes.

Personally, this episode marks the first time I will be paying any close attention to MURIC, needless to say, it fell short. Let it be on record, that I’m not arguing that civil society organisations are unnecessary. On the contrary, groups like MURIC play vital roles in promoting accountability and safeguarding rights. But those roles lose credibility when facts are sacrificed on the altar of sensationalism.

My advice to MURIC assuming this is their modus operandi, is to change their approach to activism. This is because, as a religious-based rights organisation, the least expected of them is due diligence, verification of facts and restraints, not firing off volleys based on conjectures. Because, as we know, when conjecture replaces verification, speaking becomes worse than silence. And for a civil society organisation like MURIC, silence is golden, especially when the alternative is standing facts on their head.

  • Nyesom Wike’s zero-sum game in Rivers state

Nyesom Wike’s zero-sum game in Rivers state

‘He will win, who knows when to fight and when not to fight.”.. Sun Tzu, Chinese Military General, Strategist and Philosopher’

    Look before you Leap!

The recent escalation  of imbroglio between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and his political godson, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, with the resumption of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, by the Rivers State House of Assembly; is a Zero-Sum Game by Nyesom Wike. This will most likely be the defining moment the power tussle between the political godfather and his political godson.

The imbroglio has taken a new dramatic dimension, as Minister Wike has unleashed  verbal attacks and threats on the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru and anyone who shows any form of support for Governor Fubara, or anyone that calls for reasoning, logic or political solution to prevail.

With the verbal attack on the APC Scribe, Mr. Wike has opened a new front to add to the growing number of fronts in his ongoing numerous political battles. For Minister Wike to openly declare a political war with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political party leaders and members while Wike remains in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is an indication that Minister Wike is unraveling with no holds barred. This is especially so given that, in the past 3 years Wike has practically destabilized the PDP, while burning political bridges in his wake. It appears that this latest fight by Nyesom Wike is a fight to finish.  Indeed how Wike handles this episode of his multidimensional political battles will define his political future – he will either re-assert himself as a political leader to be reckoned with, or he will experience a bitter political anticlimax that could potentially end his political relevance in the politics of Rivers State and at national level.

As I  stated in my previous analyses and opinions on this topic (eg. The 4th of April 2025 episode of this Column), I also partly blame the political crisis in Rivers State on the initial strategic mistakes made by Governor Fubara. However, Governor Fubara’s deft defection to the APC and how he executed the move was strategic and it has changed the game for him so far.

In one of his lessons on strategy and warfare, Sun Tzu also stated that, “No nation survives from prolonged warfare.” And to that extent, for the past 3 years since the resumption of his political godson Siminalayi Fubara, the people of Rivers State have not enjoyed good governance and the full benefits of having a democratically elected Governor. I believe that this protracted and continuing fight between the Minister Wike and, Governor Fubara will continue to deny the people of Rivers State the good governance.

In my view,  the impeachment proceeding is a calculated attempt to oust Governor Fubara is a zero-sum game played by Minister Wike’s camp to ensure that the incumbency and political career of governor Fubara are upended. Sadly, initial attempts by President Tinubu to resolve the impasse have not worked out, and I am not sure other entreaties will work.

    “Roforofo” fight is not strategy:

It is true that Minister Wike played crucial roles to the success of President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 Presidential elections. But it is also profoundly true that President Tinubu has been adequately compensating Minister Wike and his Allies. The rhetorical question is what will be enough for Nyensom Wike? Your answers are as good as mine.

As it is today, I dare say that Mr. Wike is overplaying his hands. He cannot fight everybody at the same time and expect to win all the time. Therefore, Wike should smell the coffee, face the realities, recalibrate his strategy, and readjust his position.

Furthermore, Minister Wike’s behavior, to the leadership of the APC, with the insults and the threats he is showering on the principal actors in APC, particularly the National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, is an indication of what will happen even if Nyensom Wike decamps into the APC. I reckon that even if Nyensom Wike decamps to APC, he will carry this toxic behavior and style into the APC, and that will certainly be a disaster for the APC. This is because, even though Wike may be tamed by Mr President, he is creating too many distractions for Mr. President and unnecessarily heating the polity. Indeed, Minister Wike’s behavior if unchecked, could be contagious and it may likely permeate into other power blocks within the APC at states and the national level. This will be a very bad influence at this particular time when there is the need for more cohesion to manage the power blocks and power dynamics within the APC as new entrants and support build up to the 2027 elections. Indeed, managing these power blocks is already a big task for Mr President and for the managers of the APC.

Emotional Intelligence and political sagacity are key to sustainable political stay power as demonstrated by President Tinubu in the over 30 years of his political career. Love him or hate him, President Bola Tinubu has a high level of emotional intelligence. That is how, for decades,he has been able to make and keep friends and allies across Nigeria, and even work with his enemies and/or those that hitherto fought against him. I hope that Minister Wike will learn some emotional intelligence and political sagacity from Mr. President.

APC unity and discipline must be sustained:

President Bola Tinubu is also a core party man, who believes in political party discipline and loyalty. Therefore I do not expect President Tinubu to allow Minister Wike to take the “roforofo” fight mentality to the APC or to continually fight and insult the APC leadership at the highest level while claiming he is loyal to Mr. President. As it is today in Nigeria, Mr. President is the APC, and the APC is Mr. President! Therefore attacking the APC leadership is attacking Mr. President.

Consequently, I totally align with the position of the National Chairman and the National Secretary of the APC, because any political party that intends to consolidate power and be sustainable MUST imbibe and entrench political party unity and discipline. Over the years President Tinubu has been able to maintain the discipline that has been responsible for the level of cohesion, unity and successes of his political structure over for many years in Lagos, the entire southwest and across  Nigeria, including the build-up to the APC merger in 2014. Minister Wike should also learn from that.

Therefore, commend the unanimous position take by the garrison commanders of APC, i.e, the National Chairman of APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Secretary of APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, have taken positions, at the national level to protect the APC from the emerging toxic narratives and actions by Wike, lest his actions could permeate into the APC and cause cracks and disaffections, and also set a bad leadership example to the members of the APC across Nigeria.

By the way, Minister Wike has been meddling into the politics of other States as he clearly stated himself in his verbal attack of Senator Ajibola Basiru, when he spoke tacitly about Osun politics. There are also news about his unsuccessful attempt to meddle into the politics of Imo State. His activities in the national, regional and state levels in the PDP are in public domain.  Yet Minister Wike is threatening that “nobody” can or should meddle in Rivers State politics, as if Rivers State is his private property. Certainly, the National Chairman and/ or National Secretary of the APC or any other political party will always be involved in political party activities in ALL the 36 States in Nigeria and the FCT. Certainly Mr. President has and will continue to lead the entire country and intervene on matters of States including Rivers, if and where necessary. In fact, it is President Tinubu’s interventions that prevented Rivers from descending into anarchy.

It is also noteworthy, that the importance of Rivers State in the permutations and combinations build up to 2027 elections, has changed from the 2023 elections scenario. Because the APC currently has about 30 incumbent governors as members. So the numbers and power dynamics that were critical in 2023, will not be the same in the  2027 elections.

I also don’t expect the APC under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu to allow  an APC lead State House or Assembly to impeach the Rivers State Governor who is a brand new entrant of the APC. That is not how the APC operates.

Please let the people of Rivers State Breathe:

I hope that this Wike Versus Fubara power tussle will be ended so that the people of River State, and by extension the people of Nigeria, will have good governance in Rivers State . That should be the real objective of any well meaning politician in Rivers State.

  • Trump’s epiphany

    Trump’s epiphany

United States President Donald Trump is strongly opinionated, verging on bigotry. He is hardline in perspective and makes no apologies about his dispositions that contradict other people’s realities. And so, when he shifts ground – even if grudgingly so – it is a noteworthy recalibration of his worldview.

For the first time since the American leader took interest in the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria, he recently conceded that Muslims are also victims of killings by bandits. Contrary to the reality on ground, he had repeatedly claimed that Christians were being targeted with genocidal attacks. Following his designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, he threatened to deploy US troops to the country, saying they would come in “guns-a-blazing to wipe out the terrorists killing our cherished Christians” amid repeated claims by some US politicians that Christians are subjected to systematic persecution in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government and many Nigerians rebutted the allegations that Christians were being targeted for killing. Bandits have operated more virulently in the northern areas of the country where Moslems happen to predominate, and they attack their targets indiscriminately and without premeditation based on religious affiliation or ethnic consideration. The point Nigeria has strained to get across is that the challenge of insecurity in the country is cross-cutting and requires a sweeping counteraction, not selective remedying as Washington wanted to make it.

Trump had seemed impervious to Nigeria’s argument, even though his administration struck a working pact with the Nigerian government to hit at terrorist hideouts. On Christmas Day 2025, US forces launched missile strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in northwest Nigeria in a “joint operation” with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In an interview with the New York Times published on the newspaper’s website last week, the American leader was asked whether the missile strikes against the IS signalled the start of a wider military campaign, to which he responded that his country could launch additional military strikes in Nigeria if attacks on Christians persists. “I’d love to make it a one-time strike,” he said, adding: “But if they continue to kill Christians it will be a many-time strike.”

In October, Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, said extremist groups such as Boko Haram and IS were killing more Muslims than Christians in Nigeria. Asked about his adviser’s remarks, Trump responded: “I think that Muslims are being killed also in Nigeria. But it’s mostly Christians.”

The American leader need be advised to face up fully to expert information about Nigeria’s reality from within his own orbit. Accepting that reality will not in any way demean the value of his country’s assistance to curtail Nigeria’s insecurity challenge. Rather, discounting the reality with bigoted inaccuracy complicates the motive for the assistance and detracts from its worth.

FULL LIST: 75 countries where US suspends visa processing

The United States State Department has announced a suspension of immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries as it reassesses those who may become a “public charge.”

The suspension, which takes effect from January 21, affects countries including Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand and Yemen. It will remain in place indefinitely while consular officers review screening procedures.

The decision comes amid intensified scrutiny of Somali nationals after a major fraud scandal in Minnesota involving taxpayer-funded welfare programmes, with many of those implicated identified as Somali or Somali-American.

In November 2025, the State Department issued fresh directives to U.S. consular posts worldwide, instructing officials to apply stricter screening under the long-standing “public charge” provision.

Under the rule, visa applications may be denied based on factors such as age, health status, English language proficiency, financial capacity and the likelihood of requiring long-term public assistance.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott said the measure was aimed at protecting U.S. public resources.

“The State Department will use its long-standing authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge on the United States and exploit the generosity of the American people,” he told Fox News.

“Immigration from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassesses immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would rely on welfare and public benefits.”

Davido denies teenage girl’s paternity claims, threatens legal action

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has denied paternity of a teenage girl, Anu, who claims he is her father.

In a statement on social media, Davido rejected Anu’s claims and accused her mother of being an “obsessed fan” who is manipulating her daughter.

Anu posted a message on Instagram requesting a DNA test to establish her identity.

She shared her struggles with bullying and mental anguish, saying classmates mocked her claims of being Davido’s daughter.

Anu wrote: “This year I become a teenager. My mom and grandma have always educated me on being a responsible teen. No drugs, alcohol, bad company and bad behavior. Today I drafted a letter I wrote from the depth of my heart not with help from my relatives.

“As I grow older I want to establish my identity. I was bullied in school since I was 6-year-old and cried home daily. Other students laughed at me when I told them my father was Mr David Adeleke. I went through a lot of mental anguish and visited a medical professional to protect my mental health. It was a sad challenging time in my life.

“This page was not online for 5 years as my mom never updated this account since it was handed over to us. We went through a lot. Despite the challenges, I still excelled to the top of the class and became the class prefect. We posted some of my report cards on this page. Now that I’m in secondary school and still excelling in my studies, I don’t talk about my family history anymore.

“However on that note as I transition into a young woman, I am respectfully asking Mr David Adeleke Singer @davido for a DNA test to establish my identity. This test is between my dad and I. It is something I want. It is something that’s the right thing to do. Please sir, consider my request once you read this post. I also sent it to your DM.

“Thank you to all Nigerians who have given me emotional support for the last 7 years. This DNA test is the right thing to do for me.”

However, Davido said he has already undergone five DNA tests, all of which were negative, and challenged Anu’s claims.

The singer expressed frustration and disappointment, saying he’s chosen three hospitals for the tests, and Anu’s team chose two, all with the same negative result.

“I’VE TAKEN 5 DNA TESTS ALL NEGATIVE I AM NOT YOUR FATHER … NEVER EVEN MET UR MOM .. SHES AN OBSESSED FAN LYING TO YOU … THIS NEEDS TO STOP I ACTUALLY HAVE CHILDREN .. STOP THIS NONSENSE. Yes I chose 3 hospitals and they chose their own two hospitals .. all came out Negative .. “

Davido threatened to take action against Anu’s mother, saying she needs to be held accountable.

“This is the last time I’m speaking on this nonsense. Never met the bitch … except when went For the DNA … very stupid behavior I will soon treat their FK … 5 fucking hospitals just to be clear .. the mom needs to go to jail … I don’t blame the poor girl ..”, he added.

BREAKING: Atiku breaks silence on son’s defection to APC

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has broken silence on the defection of his son, Abba Abubakar from PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku described the decision of his son to join the ruling APC as “entirely personal”.

The Nation reports Abba pledged to work for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The defection was announced on Thursday at the National Assembly, Abuja.

Popularly known as “Abba,” the younger Atiku was formally received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside key APC leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone, in what party leaders described as a significant political realignment.

Addressing party leaders and supporters at the event, Abubakar announced his resignation from the PDP and declared his alignment with the APC, describing the move as historic and deeply personal.

He also directed all coordinators and members of his political structure, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation, which he founded in 2022, to immediately join the APC and mobilise support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said: “My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC.

“With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu.”

Reacting, Atiku on his verified X page (formerly Twitter) said: “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal.

“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.

“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.

“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.

Alaafin breaks silence on Oyo Council of Obas controversy

Indications have emerged the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade deliberately shunned the inauguration of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

This is because the monarch, after the event, said he was not at anytime consulted by Governor Seyi Makinde to discuss the issue of rotational chairmanship before the decision was taken.

The Nation reports that Governor Makinde on Thursday, at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State House of Assembly Complex, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan inaugurated Oba Ladoja as the Chairman of the Council, a position which he would occupy for the next two years.

Makinde said he consulted the three monarchs who would be rotating the Chairmanship position, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland and Soun of Ogbomoso on who should occupy the seat for the next two years.

US pledges continued support to Nigeria’s security efforts

The United States (U.S.) government has reaffirmed  commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria to support the country in its fight against terrorism and banditry.

It said that it is also exploring new areas of collaboration, particularly in capacity building, intelligence sharing and joint operational planning.

The U.S. Defence Attaché in Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters, Abuja.

The assurance came two days after the U.S. delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria to support the ongoing counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.
