Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has appointed a female visually-challenged lawyer identified as Kindness Idahosa.

She was appointed as a Law Officer in the Ministry of Justice.

Her appointment, according to Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, Ebojele Patrick, underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusion, equal opportunity and genuine empowerment of persons with disabilities.

The statement said the state was intentional about creating pathways for talented and hardworking citizens, regardless of their physical limitations.

It said Idahosa’s journey reflected resilience and an uncommon triumph over adversity.

NMDPRA warns marketers against hoarding fuel, threatens sanction

Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in Osun has warned petroleum marketers against hoarding and any form of sharp practices before, during, and after the yuletide.

The agency also warned residents against panic buying and storing petroleum products at home. The NMDPRA state coordinator, Kunle Adeyemo, gave the warning while speaking with journalists yesterday  in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

Adeyemo said there is an adequate supply of petroleum products in the state to meet residents’ demand before, during, and after the festive period. The NMDPRA boss noted that storing petroleum products at home could lead to fire outbreaks, resulting in loss of life and property.

He said the agency had put measures in place to ensure the smooth supply and distribution of petroleum products across the state. Mr Adeyemo said any marketer caught hoarding fuel or engaging in illegal pump adjustments would be sanctioned. The NMDPRA boss also said the agency’s officials would continue to go around the state for monitoring and surveillance, with a view to sanctioning any marketer found culpable.

According to him, NMDPRA will intensify monitoring and surveillance of outlets in line with its regulatory mandate to ensure compliance with the quality, quantity, and safety of operations. The NMDPRA coordinator, who noted that the federal government had made sufficient petroleum products available to last throughout the festive season and beyond, said there was no need for panic buying or hoarding.

“Petroleum products are available in all depots around the country. Marketers should not engage in diversion, under-dispensing, hoarding, adulteration, or unsafe acts at retail outlets. Any marketer or operator caught engaging in sharp practices will be sanctioned accordingly,” he said. Adeyemo also appealed to residents to patronise only approved, certified gas facilities in the state

Customs, NDLEA intercept 1,187kg ‘Canadian Loud’

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have seized 1,187kg of Canadian Loud hidden inside an imported vehicle at the Apapa ports.

The latest interception, according to a statement by the commands Public Relations Officer, CSC Isah Suleiman, followed credible intelligence from the NDLEA, prompting a joint examination of a 1x20ft container (FCIU 6369526) carrying two vehicles. Inside the container, officers uncovered 2,374 packages of cannabis packed into 55 bags, each sachet weighing 500 grams.

He noted that the illicit consignment has since been handed over to the NDLEA for further action.

Customs confirmed that the drugs were meticulously concealed to evade detection, but sustained inter-agency collaboration ensured the cargo did not slip through the port. The seizure, Suleiman said, reinforces the agencies’ growing success in shutting down narcotics trafficking attempts through Nigeria’s busiest maritime gateway.

Apapa Area Controller, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, praised the strengthened collaboration, stressing that security will not be compromised despite rising cargo volumes during the festive season.

According to him, “Few days ago, I stated that no consignment will exit our control from this port without due check. Our synergy as agencies of government will always put us ahead of criminal elements.”

He emphasised that port trade will never be allowed to override national interest, noting that revenue collection and security enforcement must operate hand-in-hand.

“No matter the volume of trade we are processing, we will never sacrifice national security and economy for any form of trade. While we are focused on collecting maximum revenue for government, our eagle-eyed officers are activated to be alert at all times,” he said.

Oshoba also issued a stern warning to importers, exporters, freight forwarders and customs brokers attempting to exploit the Yuletide rush.

“Let me warn, once again for the umpteenth time, any trader—importer, exporter, freight forwarder or licensed customs agent, that dares our resolve this Yuletide season and beyond, will face the full wrath of the law. Investigations are ongoing on this seizure and we shall bring the perpetrators to book,” he declared.

The seizure underscores the increasing vigilance within Nigeria’s maritime domain, where joint intelligence, coordinated inspections and tighter risk-management systems are shutting down sophisticated concealment methods.

Customs reaffirmed that enforcement operations will remain heightened throughout the season, as the command intensifies its push to secure the nation’s premier port from drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

U.S. seizes Nigerian-owned supertanker for suspected oil theft

A Nigerian-owned supertanker “Skipper” has been intercepted by the United States (U.S.) Coast Guard in a joint operation with the U.S. Navy.

The arrest followed intelligence reports linking the vessel to crude oil theft and piracy and a series of transnational criminal activities spanning multiple jurisdictions, it was learnt yesterday.

The Skipper, a 20-year-old Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) marked IMO Number 9304667, has long operated in West African and South American waters.

The tanker, reportedly owned and managed by a Lagos-based business concern, is official registered in the Marshall Islands.

At the time of the interception, the tanker was allegedly flying the Guyanese flag without authorisation.

Officials from Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) confirmed that Skipper has no record in the country’s ship registry. They described the vessel’s use of the flag as both illegal and deceptive.

Flag-switching, often called “flag hopping,” is a common tactic used by ships attempting to evade regulations, trade sanctions, or detection by maritime authorities.

U.S. security officials said the seizure was conducted under American law enforcement authority after a multi-agency investigation raised alarms about the tanker’s movements and cargo records.

  • Hope Uzodimma: Securing mandate to preach Renewed Hope gospel

Hope Uzodimma: Securing mandate to preach Renewed Hope gospel

    By Sunday Dare

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently tapped Governor Hope Uzodinma to serve as the Director General and National Coordinator of the Nationwide Renewed Hope Ambassadors Project, it came as no surprise to discerning observers. For a man whose capacity to mobilize people, design functional structures, and drive strategic mobilization is well established, the assignment fits with almost mathematical precision. It is a role that demands credibility, composure, organization, and results — qualities Uzodinma has demonstrated over time

Uzodinma’s political and governance trajectory has never relied on noise or theatrics. It has been defined by structured thinking, problem-solving, and a quiet resolve to deliver. As Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, he emerged as a steady hand in moments when the party and the country required calm, negotiation, and clarity. In tense transition periods and during sensitive internal realignments, he consistently played the role of mediator rather than agitator — a solution finder with a reputation for listening carefully, thinking strategically, and acting decisively.

Yet, he is not just a negotiator; he is a builder. His work in Imo State reflects a deliberate focus on infrastructure, economic renewal, governance reforms, and investor confidence. One of the most visible pillars of his administration has been the aggressive rehabilitation and construction of critical roads. The reconstruction of the Owerri–Orlu and Owerri–Okigwe roads, for instance, has significantly improved connectivity, reduced travel time, and unlocked economic corridors that are vital to trade and commerce within and beyond the state.

In urban infrastructure, the delivery of the Assumpta Flyover at the Assumpta Roundabout in Owerri stands out as both a functional and symbolic achievement — easing congestion at a major traffic node and signalling a commitment to modern city design. Complementing this is the rebuilding and upgrade of the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre and improvements around the State House of Assembly complex, helping position Owerri as a credible destination for high-level dialogue, conferences, and institutional events.

On the transport and logistics front, the revival and upgrade of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport has further anchored Imo as a gateway for commerce, investment, and connectivity in the South-East. These are not abstract projects; they are tangible assets that residents, traders, investors, and visitors can see and use.

Most recently, Governor Uzodinma convened the Imo Investment Summit held last week — a strategic forum aimed at repositioning Imo as an investment destination of choice. The Summit brought together local and international investors, development partners, financial institutions, and private-sector leaders together.

They gathered to explore opportunities in infrastructure, industry, tourism, energy, agriculture, and services. It was not an event for optics; it was an intentional effort to chart a pathway towards a more diversified, investment-driven Imo economy, with commitments and follow-up mechanisms embedded into the state’s broader development agenda.

Beyond physical projects and economic initiatives, Uzodinma has also pursued governance and fiscal reforms: tackling legacy debt, improving internally generated revenue, prioritizing workers’ welfare, clearing pension backlogs, and advancing initiatives like “Light Up Imo” to support productivity and public safety. These decisions underscore a mindset that sees governance as a long-term management responsibility, not a short-term performance for headlines.

There is, however, another layer to his profile that is often underappreciated — his intellectual and reflective side. Recently, Uzodinma authored and presented a book titled “A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria”, a serious contribution to Nigeria’s contemporary political and governance literature. The work goes beyond partisan commentary; it situates the experience of progressive governance within a wider historical, institutional, and policy context. That a sitting Governor, takes the time to think, write, and document at that level says something important- Uzodinma views governance not just as administration, but as part of Nigeria’s unfolding historical narrative.

It is this blend of strategic political skill, governance delivery, developmental ambition, and intellectual grounding that makes his appointment as helmsman of the National Renewed Hope Ambassadors (NRHA) Project both logical and instructive.

He has been one of the most vociferous promoters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies and programs- always exploring ways both the Federal and sub nationals can work together towards achieving good governance.

The NRHA is not a campaign platform. It is not designed for electioneering or partisan sloganeering. Rather, it is a structured mass mobilization and public enlightenment architecture, conceived to bridge the gap between government reforms and citizen understanding. Its mandate is to translate policy into plain language, to carry accurate information down to the ward level, and to channel feedback from communities back up to the institutions that make and implement decisions.

In many ways, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors framework is civic education meeting mass mobilization — a nationwide network of trained ambassadors, mission officers, and coordinators who will engage markets, communities, faith institutions, youth groups, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders with facts, programmes, and opportunities, not rumours and speculation.

This project needs a leader with:

    •            Organizational intelligence – to design structures that work from the national level down to the wards.

    •            Strategic communication sense – to ensure messages are clear, consistent, and credible.

    •            Consensus-building skills – to align party structures, public institutions, and community actors behind a shared objective.

    •            Intellectual depth – to understand the policy content behind the messages and not just the sound bites.

His Excellency, Hope Uzodinma fits this profile. His experience chairing the Progressive Governors’ Forum, his record of delivery in Imo, his convening of the Imo Investment Summit, and his authorship of that seminar governance work,, together project a public figure who is both practitioner and thinker.

By assigning him this role, President Tinubu has sent a signal: the awareness of the Renewed Hope Agenda will not be left to chance. It will be systematic, evidence- based, and anchored on verifiable progress. The NRHA under Uzodinma’s leadership will function as a national interface — carrying government to the grassroots and bringing the grassroots back to government.

In a season where misinformation travels faster than facts, where cynicism often drowns out genuine progress, and where citizens demand not just promises but proof, the choice of Governor Hope Uzodinma to “preach the gospel of Renewed Hope” is more than mere political patronage. It is a strategic deployment of a problem solver, a solution provider, and a capacity builder to the frontlines of national communication of policy outcomes.

Renewed Hope, after all, is not just something to be said. It is something to be organized, explained, and demonstrated. And in that assignment, Uzodinma now carries a mandate that is as heavy as it is critical.

God will help Nigeria to succeed.

Why I connected with Mthembu, says Mariam

The Real Housewives of Lagos star, Mariam Timmer has revealed that she connected more with her Durban counterpart, Annie Mthembu more than any other star of the Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.

In a recent chat, Timmer said, “I connected immediately with Annie Mthembu from the Durban franchise. Our energy matched from the start, and we bonded both personally and on a more professional, intentional level. I also connected well with Princess Jecoco from Abuja. There was instant familiarity and ease with her. As for the ones I didn’t connect with right away… let’s just say you’ll have to watch the show to see how that story unfolds.”

When asked if she formed any new friendships during the trip, Mariam said, “Absolutely! I formed some beautiful new friendships on this trip, especially with the Durban ladies and Princess Jecoco. They were truly a breath of fresh air, and I connected with them in a very genuine way. I really like their energy, their openness and the way they show up for the people around them. I also formed bonds with a few others, and what made it special was that our connection went beyond the show. Outside of RUGTA, we were able to open up, share what we were dealing with in our personal lives, and really support each other. That, to me, is sisterhood and I appreciated every moment of it.”

Wumi Toriola: Striving for excellence and professionalism

In the Nigerian film industry, the female practitioners seem to be taking the bull by the horn and changing the narrative – especially as producers.

Year in, year out, young female practitioners are taking up the mantle of leadership to produce films and make a killing out of the job.

Interestingly, quite a number of the female film practitioners are not only producing films but also taking giant steps in contributing to the growth of the industry in different ways.

Popular actress and producer, Wumi Toriola is one of these female practitioners making indelible prints on the Nigerian film scene.

Recently, Toriola, in an unusual manner, brought together a cross section of Nollywood stakeholders as she hosted a colloquium and end-of-year soirée themed “Future of Nollywood: Challenges and Progress.”

The event, which she also described as “The Genesis 1.0,” held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, and featured insightful conversations on standards, professionalism, and the future of the film industry.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Mojisola Bimbo-Manuel urged practitioners to take responsibility for shaping the future of Nollywood. She noted that actors wield significant influence, often serving as role models whom children listen to more than their parents.

Bimbo-Manuel emphasised that the industry must adopt higher entry and professional standards if it hopes to attract serious investment.

“People will put good money into filmmaking, but the only way to access that investment is to bring out good products,” she said. “There are so many people among you that should not move with you. Your industry is suffering because standards are not enforced.”

She questioned Nollywood’s lack of structured criteria for entry compared to academia. “Before you can become a professor in UNILAG, you must have a PhD. What is the benchmark for getting into Nollywood?” she asked.

She also stressed that female actors do not need to dress provocatively to command respect.

Drawing from her personal life, she added, “I’ve been married for 29 years and no one has ever settled a quarrel between my husband and me. The world expects you to be perfect, but you are not. Still, you don’t need the negative publicity you sometimes get, because you have children who may suffer for it.”

A financial expert, Akorede Idowu, also addressed the guests, advising Nollywood creatives to prioritise their financial well-being.

“Everything has its season. The law of diminishing returns will always set in. You won’t always have the strength to work, and younger faces will keep joining the industry. It is wise to plan ahead,” he said.

Idowu urged practitioners to save, invest, diversify their income streams, and build an emergency fund. He also encouraged them to stay informed about tax laws that apply to their work.

Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Bukola Agbaminoja, pledged continued government support for the creative sector. She noted that global stars are currently in Nigeria shooting films because they are impressed by the quality of local talent.

She added that the state government has provided grants running into hundreds of millions to filmmakers.

As host, Toriola charged her colleagues to uphold integrity in their work.

“Character is different from integrity,” she said. “People judge me by how I shout in movies, but you will never hear that I got paid and failed to do my job. We must ensure we operate with integrity in everything we do.”

The event attracted several notable guests, including Yewande Adekoya, Dolapo Oni, Bimbo Aiyeola, Regina Chukwu, Adediwura BlarkGold, Fausat Balogun (Madam Saje), Omowunmi Ajiboye, Idris Aregbe, and Opeyemi Ajayi (Managing Director of Cinemax).
