NASENI launches initiative to groom young innovators in secondary schools, universities

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has unveiled a new  initiative aimed at discovering and empowering young innovators across Nigeria’s universities and secondary schools.

The programme, known as FutureMakers by NASENI, was formally launched on Thursday in Abuja by the agency’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who described it as a strategic pipeline for raising world-class innovators between the ages of 5 and 16.

Through NASENI Institutes spread across the country, Halilu said FutureMakers will provide young learners with skills in design thinking, creativity, engineering basics and technology use, mentorship from industry experts and innovators.

Others, he said, are access to prototyping laboratories and equipment, hackathons, pitch competitions and innovation challenges.

“We are creating a cycle where a child’s curiosity today becomes Nigeria’s breakthrough tomorrow,” Halilu stated.

The NASENI boss said FutureMakers is not a standalone programme but a key component of the agency’s long-term strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.

This strategy, he said, aims to build technical confidence early, develop problem-solvers and inventors, prepare young people for STEM fields, entrepreneurship and leadership.

“This is our way of securing Nigeria’s innovation stability over the next 30 to 50 years,” he said.

Halilu noted that the world’s leading innovation economies invested in young talent early, citing examples such as the United States’ FIRST Robotics, which has produced top engineers and startup founders, India’s Atal Innovation Mission, which exposes millions of children to innovation labs and design-thinking challenges, the United Kingdom’s TeenTech, a programme that helps young people explore science, engineering and technology

“These global programmes prove one thing: early exposure creates lifelong innovators,” he added. Today, Nigeria is joining that league through FutureMakers by NASENI.”

Halilu urged parents, teachers, private sector organisations and development partners to support the programme.

To parents, he said: “Encourage your children, let creativity lead the way, to teachers, let’s make innovation a daily experience. To the private sector, this is the time to invest, sponsor challenges, fund prototypes, adopt regions.”

Addressing the students, Halilu reminded them that age is no barrier to creativity.

“You are not too young to build something that matters. The world is full of innovators who started exactly where you are today with one idea and the courage to try.

“By launching FutureMakers, we are planting seeds that will grow into Nigeria’s innovation destiny. This is how nations rise.”

Chairman of the Senate Committee on the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Senator Francis Ezenwa,  noted that the programme stands out because it targets children and young artisans between the ages of five and 16, introducing them early to design thinking, creative workshops, and prototype development.

Expressing pride in the initiative, the senator said it reflects NASENI’s commitment to building a Nigeria that not only consumes technology but creates it.

Senator Ezenwa added that the programme goes beyond offering a platform, as it equips young Nigerians with practical tools to transform ideas into real solutions.

urged stakeholders to renew their commitment to building a nation where creativity is celebrated and every child is empowered to dream and innovate.

In his remarks SA to the EVC/CEO of NASENI, Dr. Anas Yazid, said the Future Makers Programme aims to replicate such transformative experiences at scale across Nigeria.

The programme, he explained, goes far beyond robotics, coding, engineering or design thinking.

He noted that years from now, many of them may trace their own success stories back to this very programme.

Outlining the programme objectives, Head, NASENI Innovation Hub Manager, Rachael Perez-Folayan, noted that the programme will provide prizes worth up to N5m to top winners from each zone, an exclusive study abroad with the EVC of NASENI and scholarships.

Speaking on the programme structure, she said the programme is is proposed for a three-month period, starting from December 2025 to February 2026. She added that the proposed total number of participants for this first cohort is 60 children selected from all the six geopolitical zones.

Furthermore, Perez-Folayan, stated that applicants must be 16 years old or younger at the time of application with proof of age such as birth certificate, National Identification Number (NIN) and international passport, which all applicants must be a Nigerian citizen or currently residing in Nigeria.

Insecurity: We are procuring efficient drones, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, said his administration has commenced the process of procuring multifunctional drones with good capabilities with a view to tackle insecurity.

Governor Okpebholo, who reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to securing the lives and property of Edo citizens, spoke in Benin City when he received new Commander of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, General Ahmed Olatunboju Balogun.

Governor Okpebholo assured the Nigerian Army of his administration’s full cooperation and continuous support in the fight against insecurity and other crimes.

The Edo Governor encouraged the new commander to communicate any operational challenges requiring his intervention.

According to him, “Let me welcome you to Edo. In truth, we had a very good relationship with the outgoing commander, and I believe we will continue from where he stopped. The security and protection of the people and properties of Edo State are very important to us. I want you to know that we are going to work with you wholeheartedly to ensure Edo remains secure.

“You talked about school, hospital, and road. These are areas we are already working on. In the next few days, you will see improvements around the office. At the Ekenwa Barracks, we are taking the road project to Gele-Gele, spanning about 36km. In that vicinity, you can see the good work already ongoing.

“In the area of drones, we are procuring multifunctional ones with good capabilities. Very soon, we will deliver on that. I want you to help us secure a new Edo, free from insecurity,” he added.

On his part, Brigadier General Balogun pledged to consolidate the existing cooperation between the military and the Edo state government.

“My predecessor spoke highly of the support received from the Edo State Government, which has greatly aided our professional duty. I will build on this cooperation and take it to the next level. My passion is to work towards making Edo State safer, ensuring citizens sleep with both eyes closed and go about their businesses without fear,” he said.

The commander appealed for the completion of the Ekenwa Barracks road, the stalled renovation of the brigade school, and the need for drones to enhance technological-driven operations.

    PCNGI commissions 40 electric-powered buses

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) yesterday commissioned 40 electric-powered vehicles in Abuja to advance the country’s clean energy transition.

The Minister of State for Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, who launched the buses, said the rollout marks “another bold step in Nigeria’s journey towards cleaner, smarter and more sustainable mobility.”

Ekpo, who was represented by his aide, Abel Igheghe, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to cleaner fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG), and electric mobility.

“This gathering is not just a product showcase; it is a statement of intent. We will continue to support initiatives that align with our clean energy aspirations.

“Electric vehicles are an important part of the future, and they will create new industries, new jobs, and new opportunities for Nigerian innovators.”

He said the Ministry of Petroleum Resources will sustain policies that promote alternative fuels, deepen gas utilisation, and encourage technology transfer.

“Nigeria’s clean mobility journey must be inclusive. It must deliver affordable transport options for ordinary citizens and strengthen our national emission-reduction targets,” he said.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of PiCNG, Ismael Ahmed, said the initiative is focused on delivering affordable and reliable mobility for Nigerians.

“This is clean energy. This is affordable energy. This is available energy. What matters is the ordinary Nigerian — the person in Kano, Zanya, or Daura whose transportation costs must come down,” he said.

Ahmed said PiCNG will power charging stations with CNG to address concerns about the electricity supply.

“We have sunlight, we have gas, and we will use them to deliver cheaper and cleaner mobility,” he said.

He added that the 40 newly unveiled electric buses demonstrate President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to providing affordable, reliable, and cleaner transportation across the country.

“This bus is not just for a showcase. It will be deployed within the week, and Nigerians will begin to see it in several states offering cheaper transportation, especially during this festive season,” he said.

PiCNG also reaffirmed its partnership with private investors to expand charging infrastructure nationwide, including plans for more stations along major transport corridors.

Earlier at a press briefing in his office, the Pi-CNG chairman announced the launch of Pi-CNG 2.0, the next phase of Nigeria’s clean mobility transition.

Ahmed said the Initiative, created to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal, has evolved into a catalyst for national energy transformation.

“From the onset, the mandate was clear: provide relief from rising transport costs, deepen gas utilisation, stimulate jobs, and catalyse economic growth,” he said.

He highlighted key achievements over the last 20 months, including activation of CNG value chains in 28 states, establishment of more than 58 refuelling stations, deployment of thousands of NGV buses and tricycles, onboarding of over 300 automotive conversion partners, training of more than 6,000 Nigerians — including 150 armed forces personnel and 220 women in Kano — and securing more than $2 billion in investment commitments.

Other milestones include progress toward local manufacturing of CNG equipment at the Ajaokuta Industrial Park, strengthened gas-supply infrastructure across the northern corridor, partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to expand CNG stations in the Niger Delta, and activation of the national electric-mobility programme.

Ahmed confirmed that the Kano State CNG launch will hold in the first quarter of 2026, with President Tinubu expected to attend.

As Pi-CNG enters its 2.0 phase, he said the focus will remain on the availability, affordability, and acceptability of clean-energy mobility solutions.

“Our mission is unwavering: to build a resilient, multi-energy transport ecosystem that lowers transport costs and positions Nigeria as a continental leader in clean mobility,” he said.

Kidnapping, terror attacks on schools worsening out-of-school crisis in Nigeria — Oyinlola

…as Alolade Oyinlola College of Health, ICT matriculates 90 students

Former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has warned that frequent kidnappings and terror attacks on schools are worsening Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis.

Speaking at the second Matriculation of Alolade Oyinlola College in Okuku, Odo-Otin local government area, Oyinlola, who is also the proprietor of the institution, stressed that parents will continue to keep their children at home unless the Federal Government urgently restores security and public confidence in the education system.

He said, “If parents are not sure that the children will go to school and come back safely, why allow them to go? The Federal Government must address terrorism, kidnapping, and related threats to encourage children, especially in the North, to attend school. That is the only way to reduce out-of-school children.”

On the occasion, Oyinlola congratulated the matriculating students, noting that they represent a diverse mix of backgrounds, cultures, and aspirations from across Nigeria.

The Chairman of the College Council, Prof. Sola Akinrinade, revealed that 90 students were admitted and urged them to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits.

  • Cubana protecting our interest, says Amakaeze siblings, disown brother’s claims on disputed Abuja property

Cubana protecting our interest, says Amakaeze siblings, disown brother’s claims on disputed Abuja property

Siblings of Rev. Chidiebere Amakaeze have kicked following his claims  against nightclub entrepreneur, Obi Cubana, insisting that the businessman is not indebted in anyway to the family.

In a now viral video, they claim Cubana had in fact supported them for years.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Nwem Amakaeze, the immediate younger brother, said Cubana has consistently fulfilled all financial obligations on the Wuse 2 property in dispute and has even done more than one can imagine.

“Let it be on record that Obi Cubana does not owe the Amakaeze family. We are six surviving children. Five of us are united; only our eldest brother chose to go his own way. Despite that, Obinna still pays him and even more,” he said.

He alleged that Rev. Chidiebere misrepresented himself as the family’s only surviving next-of-kin in 2018 to obtain a sole letter of administration, describing his actions as “wickedness of the highest order.”

He said: “My brother gives an impression that in fighting Obi Cubana or trying to remove him from the premises, he is doing it on behalf of the family, but there is no lie bigger than that.

“In 2018, you came to the Abuja Federal High Court and swore an affidavit that you are the only surviving next of kin and son of Rev. Michael Nwobi Amakaeze. On that premises, you deceived the court to give you a sole letter of administration which was countered then. There is no need for sentiments.”

Nwem further alleged that their brother had repeatedly stirred conflict, including filing petitions he alleged were false and inciting social-media attacks against Cubana.

“The information that Obi is trying to take somebody’s property is not correct. Obi just said, “ you have siblings. I can settle today, but they need to have a share. I grew up with them, they are my friends, they are my family.”

“The problem is internal. For 10 years, I haven’t seen my brother. All he sends are threats and insults. Obi Cubana is only insisting that any settlement must include all siblings,” he added.

Their elder sister, Adaolisa Amakaeze, also defended Cubana in a separate video, saying he has taken care of the family and paid rent as caretaker of the property, stressing that he is not owing and should not be forced out.

This comes after Abuja court sheriffs executed an eviction order on December 9, 2025, at Plot 81, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, formerly the Cubana Lounge, and handed possession to businessman Mr. Collins Onwuzulike.

Rev. Chidiebere had claimed he sold the property to Onwuzulike for N2 billion, a claim his siblings have disputed.

Heiress of the Awolowo family, Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, has expressed confidence in the future of the Yoruba people and Nigeria, while commending Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, for his steadfast leadership.

She gave the remarks in Ikenne, Ogun State, while receiving a delegation sent by Pa Fasoranti to condole with the family over the passing of Mr. Segun Awolowo Jnr., who died in November at age 62.

Awolowo-Dosunmu noted that Fasoranti has consistently supported the family, both during the lifetime of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and after his passing.

The former Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands thanked him for his “unfailing fatherly love and support.”

Delivering Fasoranti’s condolence message, former Osun State Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, described Segun’s death as a significant loss, urging the family not to despair as he lived a meaningful life and left behind a worthy legacy.

A statement by Afenifere’s national publicity secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, quoted Omisore as recalling that the enduring legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo were rooted in integrity and impactful service, values he said Segun upheld.

The delegation reaffirmed Afenifere’s unwavering commitment to the ideals championed by the late sage. Awolowo-Dosunmu, expressing optimism about Yoruba and national progress, asked the team to convey the family’s goodwill to Pa Fasoranti and wished him more years of service to Yorubaland and Nigeria.

Prayers were offered for Afenifere, the Yoruba people, and the nation before the delegation was taken on a tour of historic sites within the Awolowo compound, including the Awo Museum, Awo Library, and Efunyela Hall.

The delegation, led by Senator Omisore, included Agbaakin Ademola Folarin, Mr. Lanre Omisore, Dr. Niyi Osoba, Otunba Deji Wellington, Hon. Wale Adedayo, and Chief Olasehinde.
