    NPC rebrands micro-pension scheme

The Nigerian Pension Commission (NPC) said it has commenced rebranding of the existing micro-pension plan for informal sector workers as the Personal Pension Plan (PPP).

The PPP, according to the Commission, would take care of millions of Nigerians in the informal sector.

It said 12 states were yet to implement the Contributory Pension Scheme, adding that seven states were at various stages of establishing pension bureaus.

Director General of the Nigerian Pension Commission, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran spoke in Benin City at the Second Run 2025 Consultative Forum for States and the FCT.

Oloworaran commended President Bola Tinubu for approving ₦758bn bond through the Federal Executive Council to settle legacy pension liabilities such as accrued rights, pension increases and minimum pension guarantee.

Represented by the Commissioner Inspectorate of the Commission, Samuel Uwandu, Oloworaran said pension assets now topped ₦26trn.

She noted that successes of Nigeria’s pension system relied on the extent to which the sub-national governments embraced the full implementation of the CPS/CDBS.

The NPC boss commended states that have made significant progress by enacting pension laws and commencing contribution remittances for their workers.

According to her, “Our mission as an industry is not complete. The success of this national reform rests on its implementation in every State, Local Government, and across the Informal Sector. This Forum is the engine of that collaboration.

“This November marks one year since I assumed office as Director General of the National Pension Commission. It has been a year of deliberate reform, focused on strengthening governance and expanding the value of the pension system for all Nigerians.

“The timely payment of Accrued Pension Rights. The planned re-introduction of Gratuity Payments for Federal Civil Servants under the CPS. Introduction of a new Pension Contribution Remittance System (PCRS) to eliminate errors and delays in pension remittances” among others.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, who was represented by Secretary to State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor, said his administration was expecting a report of the pension scheme in the state and pledged to abide by its recommendations.

He said his administration released N3 billion out of the N5bn owed to staff of the state owned College of Education who were disengaged when the school was handed over to the federal government.

Korea pledges stronger partnership with Nigeria in areas of technology, education, others

The Republic of Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria across key sectors including expanding trade relations, technology, culture, and education.

Reflecting on Korea’s remarkable transformation from one of the poorest nations to a global economic powerhouse, Namgung attributed the success to hard work, education, and a firm belief in democracy and freedom.

He said, “That belief that real progress must be built on freedom and human dignity, continues to guide us today. It is what inspires Korea’s key initiatives in business, technology, and culture. Whether it’s K-pop, K-food, or K-tech, they all stem from the same idea that openness and creativity can change lives.”

The event showcased products from leading Korean brands including Cotra, LG, Samsung, Hyundai, and Kia, alongside cultural performances by solo artist Gina Hwang and contemporary music group Sangjaru, who thrilled guests with traditional and modern Korean songs.

NCDC chair urges North-Central states to unite against insecurity, prioritise development

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the North-Central Development Commission (NCDC), Cosmos Ternenge Akighir, has urged the seven states in the North-Central region to form a united front to tackle insecurity, strengthen infrastructure, and promote peaceful co-existence.

Akighir, who made the call during an event hosted by the Jemgbagh Active and Retired Directors Association (JARDA) in Abuja, said the region—comprising the FCT, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger—must speak with one voice and build an unbreakable bond to address its challenges.

He explained that the commission was established to simplify and accelerate regional development by reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks and leveraging the expertise of technocrats.

According to him, the North-Central region is blessed with abundant human and natural resources, and unity is essential to unlocking its full potential.

Abducted Kebbi students: Kefas postpones defection to APC ceremony

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, on Wednesday postponed indefinitely his planned defection ceremony from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr Kefas said his decision was in solidarity for the kidnapped Kebbi students, declaring prayers for them.

“In light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent school girls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“At a moment when our nation is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics.

Ekiti 2026: ADC picks Bejide as governorship candidate

    …vows victory

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, has expressed confidence in defeating the incumbent ruling party in Ekiti State, citing the current state realities as the basis for his assurance.

Bejide, promising victory in the June 20, 2026, Ekiti governorship election, made the pledge on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of his nomination certificate by the party’s National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, who expressed confidence in Bejide’s ability to win.

Represented by the Deputy National Chairman (North East), Babachir Lawal, Mark called on Ekiti people to rally round Bejide so that the fortune of the State will be transformed.

In his acceptance speech, Bejide, who expressed confidence in the party’s chances, stressed that the current administration in Ekiti has failed to meet public expectations.

“At the moment, the Ekiti state government is not doing well for the people, and they are looking for a change, a change in respect of provision of infrastructure,” he said.

He noted that travellers entering the state from neighbouring areas begin to face the ordeal of bad roads, “So, the people are looking for somebody who will solve their situation, and that is why our position is very relevant,” he added, insisting that voters were ready for leadership that could address their challenges.

He promised a focused and competitive campaign, “We are going to win, we are going to run a good campaign in Ekiti state. We are going to run a good campaign, and we are going to win.

“We are not just contesting for the purpose of it, we are contesting to win the election, and I can assure you we are going to do well,” he said.

Bejide, who has been a political elite in the state and has held several party and official positions including Secretary to the State Government, Ambassador to Canada since the days of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the National Republican Convention (NRC) and the aborted 3rd Republic, said this background prepared him for the governorship.

“I believe that experience is enough for me to be governor of the state,” he said, while outlining his priorities if elected, including infrastructure development, transparency, value restoration, agriculture, and public service reform.

“I’m bringing on board good infrastructure. I’m bringing on board transparency in governance. I’m also bringing on board the area of revival of the old values of Ekiti people,” he added.

Asked why he chose the ADC as the platform to pursue his ambitions, he said the party offered stability and integrity.

“If you look at the matrix of the party, the party stands for transparency, the party stands for democracy, and the party stands for good governance.

“Those are the attractions. If you look at the other parties as of today, they are either fragmented, divided, or factionalized, but our party stands firmly on solid ground. We conducted a primary, which has resulted in my emergence as the candidate of the party. Up till today, the other parties are in court,” he said.

Wike to Turaki: Nigeria’s democracy not under threat

…PDP is going through internal crisis – Minister

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has asserted that Nigeria’s democracy is never under threat.

Wike was responding to comments made by factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, on Tuesday during the fracas that occurred between the factions of the party at the PDP Wadata, Headquarters.

Turaki asked President Donald Trump to come and ‘save Nigeria’s democracy that is under threat’.

The minister described the call as reckless and capable of creating tension in the country.

Wike said this on Wednesday while receiving a courtesy visit, the Board and Management of the newly established South-South Development Commission (SSDC), led by its board chairman, Prince Chibudom Nwuche and Managing Director, Ms Usoro Akpabio.

Ms Akpabio, a former FCT civil servant who began her public service career in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) between 2006 and 2007, said her delegation came to strengthen institutional ties, noting that the Commission would; “deepen collaborations with federal MDAs and key stakeholders to ensure the South South remains at the forefront of policy implementation and development planning.”

Wike further tackle Turaki on allegation that Christians were facing genocide in Nigeria and his subsequent claim that the country’s democracy needed foreign intervention to survive.

He said, “Look at what someone said yesterday. You have internal crises in your own party, yet you go on national television claiming there is genocide against Christians. Essentially, you are telling the world that this government is committing genocide. And when security agencies invite you to clarify your claims, people shout, ‘They want to kill him!’ This is a national security threat. Some are even calling Trump to ‘save their democracy’. How can you call an outsider to save you when you can’t obey a simple court order?”.

Wike said Nigeria’s democracy is stable and not in danger and that the threat lies in political actors who deliberately peddle provocative claims.

“You cannot keep your house in order and then blame others for your failures. Impunity cannot continue,” he said.

Wike urged the SSDC leadership not to allow political distractions, sentiments or external pressures to derail the Commission’s mandate.

He warned that regional development agencies in the past collapsed under the weight of corruption, divided loyalties and poor leadership.

He said, “The development of your region depends heavily on your commitment. Too many people see an appointment as an opportunity to announce, ‘I have arrived.’ Many are not committed to the job. But the only way to justify your appointment, and make the President proud, is to work tirelessly to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda”.

He criticized the historical performance of interventionist agencies such as the NDDC, recalling how contractors “rushed in from Abuja with portfolios” while billions of naira yielded minimal impact.

He warned the SSDC board not to repeat the mistakes of duplication of projects, politically motivated contracts or abandoning community engagement.

“Don’t go and do streets that lead only to one person’s house. Don’t duplicate projects states or local governments are already doing. Go to the communities, ask them what their immediate needs are. Support the President fully. Don’t divide your loyalty. Your loyalty is to the President who appointed you”, he stated.

The FCT Minister, who acknowledged facing sustained political attacks since assuming office, said such pressures must never determine the integrity of public service.

He said, “I am here as Minister because I knew I could do the work. And yes, you will step on toes. But I’m not afraid as long as I’m doing the right thing”.

Wike urged the SSDC team to work as a cohesive unit, maintain discipline in project execution, avoid liabilities, resist pressures for undue contract awards and ensure fiscal responsibility.

He advised, “Today, you are united because there’s no project and no money yet. But the moment ₦50 billion drops and someone spends it without approval, fights will start. Don’t let that be your legacy”.

Wike commended the qualifications of the commissioners and directors, noting that the South-South region expects a different and exemplary performance.

“In the name of the South-South region, show a difference. Don’t make Mr. President think he made a mistake. Give him that happiness and go along with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.

Responding, Ms Akpabio assured the Minister that the Commission would not betray its mandate.

She said, “On behalf of the good people of the South-South Development Commission, be assured that we are fully committed to delivering on our mandate to drive regional development and economic growth,” she said, adding that the Commission would strengthen its liaison office in Abuja to ensure robust engagement with federal agencies.”

  • Reps seek tax relief for older persons, set to pass rights for older persons bill

Reps seek tax relief for older persons, set to pass rights for older persons bill

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, said on Wednesday that the House is seeking to make provisions that will ensure tax relief and exemption for senior citizens in the country while also providing free medical care for them by government hospitals.

Speaking at a public hearing a bill that seeks to provide certain rights for Older Persons to ensure health and economic relief and protection for their social and civil rights and organized by the Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, the Speaker said many of these social benefits were previously covered by traditional family support systems.

Speaker Abbas the House resolve to provide a formal legal structure that will protect the aged from abuse, saying “this Older Persons (Rights and Privileges) bill has become necessary because existing legislations, like the National Senior Citizens Centre Act, 2018, have not fully taken care of the peculiar needs of older persons and their rights are constantly abridged by others, from family members to public institutions and the rest of society.

“This bill is therefore an attempt to provide comprehensive protection for the specific rights of older citizens and meet our obligations towards safeguarding their welfare.

“Section 42 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, guarantees certain inalienable rights for every Citizen and forbids the discrimination of persons on the basis of religion or race or gender, but it fails to cover the peculiar injustices that old people suffer simply because they are old.

“The Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy in Chapter 2 of the Constitution also make provisions for the well-being of citizens, but they are not obligations that are justifiable or enforceable.

READ ALSO; Emir of Ilorin condemns Eruku Church attack

“In sum, current policy and legal frameworks for the protection of old people are either fragmented or incomplete, and mostly cannot be enforced by the courts. This bill not only hopes to address a wider range of issues, including social and economic challenges, but also to provide a legally binding framework for older people.

“The important thing here is that old people are now to be protected by legally enforceable rights, and they can hope to get restitution from the courts if these rights or entitlements are breached. It is a very progressive bill which seeks to bring the social welfare programme available for old people up to date.

“It examines the pressures that joblessness, loneliness, neglect, insecurity, poverty, retirement, and health challenges foist on the aged and makes provisions for safeguards and benefits that will enable them to live better. Proposed provisions include free medical services in government facilities, some forms of tax exemption, stipends, and protection against abandonment.

“Many of these were previously covered by traditional family support systems, but as those weaken, we must provide a formal legal structure that will protect the aged from abuse.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, said the provisions of the bill “reflect on our collective responsibility to ensure that our older population receives the dignity, respect, and support they deserve. I call it – Society giving back.

“As we know, older persons often face unique challenges that can affect their health, economic stability, and social engagement. This legislation aims to address these issues head-on by establishing a framework that guarantees their rights and protections.

“House Bill 2098 seeks to ensure health and economic relief for older persons, recognizing that access to quality healthcare and financial security are fundamental human rights. It also emphasizes the importance of protecting their social and civic rights, allowing them to participate fully in society and contribute their wisdom and experience.”

National Coordinator of National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Badamasi Lawal said the Older Persons bill, 2025, under consideration should be harmonized with the National Senior Citizens Centre Act, 2018, for ease of operationability in supporting Older Persons in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the National Pension Commission (NPC), Barrister Martins Ikagu described the proposed legislation as a positive development that would further strengthen and expand the legal framework on social security in Nigeria.

While calling for review of the proposals in clause 2, 3(2), 4(1), 5, 17(1), 30 and 38(2) of the proposed bill, for contextual correctness, he reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to protecting the social rights of Older Persons, including retirees who have a constitutional right to earn pension after retirement.

According to him, “Section 3(2) of Part Ill on Rights of Older Persons: This section provides that older persons shall be entitled to five percent of the Social Protection Intervention Programmes of the relevant MDAs of the Federal Government. We are of the opinion that details of the relevant MDAs should be annexed to the Bill or provided in the Interpretation Section for appropriate guidance, implementation, and enforcement.

“Section 4(1) on Rights of Older Persons: The side note to this section reads thus: ‘Mobility and Accessibility to Physical’. We observed that the sentence is incomplete and does not relate to the information in the referenced section. Accordingly, we advise that the sentence be reviewed for correctness and applicability.

“Section 5 on Minimum Wage: The section provides that indigent older persons shall be entitled to at least 25% of the National Minimum Wage as monthly stipends, which shall be reviewed by the Federal Government every five years. We observed that the specific source of funding and custody of the funds to be utilized for the payment of the stipends were not provided.

“In order to achieve seamless implementation, we recommend that the source of funding and domiciliation of the dedicated funds for payment of the stipends should be determined and codified.

“Furthermore, in line with best global practices, we recommend the insertion of a provision that would mandate the participation of Nigerians in both formal and informal employment to some social security scheme, in order to become eligible to access the rights provided under the Bill.

“This would make the scheme sustainable and reduce the financial burden that would otherwise be placed on the respective tiers of Government pursuant to the Bill.

“Section 17(1) on Provision for Accessibility Aids: This clause reads as follows: ‘At public parking lots, suitable spaces shall be Properly Older Persons Rights Bill, 2024 marked and reserved for Older Persons’. We observed that the provision is incoherent, possibly due to the inclusion of the highlighted phrase. We therefore recommend that the provision be reviewed for correctness.

“Section 30 on Education must be subsidized: This section provides that: ‘The education of special education personnel shall be highly subsidized’. We observed that the provision is incoherent and does not focus on older persons as may have been intended. Accordingly, we recommend that the provision be reviewed for contextual correctness.

“Section 38(2): We observed that this Section does not have a side note. We recommend the insertion of a side note for ease of reference.

“We further observed that the Section provides that the Bill shall not apply to persons who are beneficiaries under the provisions of the Pension Reform Act 2014, the National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, the National Social Insurance Trust Fund Act 2004, and the National Provident Fund Act, 1961.

“We are of the opinion that this provision is contrary to the provisions of Section 42(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) for being discriminatory, also unnecessarily restrictive, as it deprives persons who are beneficiaries of schemes under the referenced legislations from enjoying some social rights provided in the Bill but not covered by the referenced legislations.

‘For instance, the right to work, right to education, right to first consideration in queues and emergencies, right to rebates, provision of accessibility aids during transportation, and access to buildings, amongst others, are provided in the Bill but not covered under the referenced legislations.

“In view of the above, we recommend a review of the provision to bring it in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) by making it nondiscriminatory and all-embracing.”

While achieving extreme slimness, TECNO SPARK Slim does not compromise on durability. Its 0.36mm aerospace-grade fiberglass back cover is 0.19mm thinner than conventional materials yet improve strength by 300% and flexibility by 200%.

The screen is protected by Corning® Gorilla® Glass 7i, while the entire device is IP64 rated against dust and water, ensuring peace of mind for everyday use.

Slim Yet Stylish: Lighting Up Individual Expression

SPARK Slim comes in two timeless colorways: Slim White and Cool Black, bringing classic elegance into modern fashion trends. Weighing around 156g and featuring an ultra-narrow frame with graceful curves, the device offers a superb slim grip that feels refined and comfortable in the hand.

In addition to its ultra-slim aesthetics, SPARK Slim introduces an interactive Mood Light design on the back, featuring two circular “eyes” that mimic emotions through multi-scene lighting effects. In scenarios such as power on/off, charging, incoming calls, Ella activation, and notifications, the eyes display playful light animations—expressing moods like happy, not happy, or blinking. For Gen Z users, this transforms functional notifications into a unique form of fashionable self-expression, turning the device into both a stylish daily companion and a tool to showcase individuality.

Beyond playful interaction, SPARK Slim also delivers an exceptional viewing experience. Its 1.5K high-resolution curved display offers immersive clarity, reaching 4500 nits peak brightness and supporting a 144Hz refresh rate for ultra-smooth responsiveness, ensuring vivid visuals even in bright outdoor conditions.

Elevated Experiences with TECNO AI and Beyond

SPARK Slim integrates TECNO AI, providing real-time translation, document summarization, and AI photo repair, empowering young users in learning, work, and creative output. With the addition of Touch Transfer, users can instantly share images, videos, or files between two TECNO devices with just a tap via NFC, providing seamless connectivity. Further enhancing the experience, the device features Dolby dual stereo speakers and dual system support, delivering enriched entertainment and productivity.
