ISWAP leader sentenced to 20 years imprisonment over terror attacks

One of the leaders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) – Hussaini Ismaila – prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) on terrorism charges, has been convicted and handed a 20-year jail term by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Emeka Nwite handed out the sentence in a judgment delivered on Tuesday after Ismaila (aka Mai Tangaran) pleaded guilty to a four-count terrorism charge brought against him by the DSS.

The prosecution said Ismaila was the coordinator of the 2012 attacks on Police Headquarters in Bompai, Kano State; Mobile Police Base, Kabuga Road, Kano State; Pharm Centre Police Station, Kano State; Angwa Uku Police Station, Kano State, among other places, in which many were injured.

Shortly after his arrest on August 31, 2017, at Tsamiyya Babba Village, Gezewa LGA, Kano State, Ismaila was arraigned on a four-count charge brought under the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.

The trial suffered delays resulting from appeals and the conduct of a trial-within-trial to, among other things, ascertain the voluntariness of the defendant’s extra-judicial statements.

When the trial eventually opened, the prosecution called five witnesses, including two DSS officials and two eyewitnesses to some of the attacks.

Ismaila, who had earlier pleaded not guilty during his arraignment, changed his plea to guilty after the testimony of the fifth prosecution witness.

Subsequently, the defendant’s lawyer, P. B. Onijah from the Legal Aid Council (LAC) pleaded with the court to be lenient with the defendant.

Onijah said Ismaila was remorseful and changed his plea to avoid wasting the court’s time and regretted being involved in terrorism.

Justice Nwite, in his judgment, found Ismaila guilty of the offences charged and sentenced him to 15 years in relation to count one; and 20 years on counts two, three, and four.

The judge ordered that the sentences run concurrently, while the sentencing shall begin to run from the date of his arrest, on August 31, 2017.

Justice Nwite equally ordered that the Controller-General of the Correctional Service confine the convict at any prison of the Controller-General’s choice for the purpose of serving his sentence.

The judge added that Ismaila should be subjected to both rehabilitation and deradicalization after serving his term, before being reintegrated with society.

Nathaniel Bassey condemns Kwara, Kebbi attacks

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has reacted to the recent unrest in Kwara and Kebbi states, condemning the alleged attacks on Christians and calling for divine judgment on those responsible.

His statement comes after a disturbing attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, where suspected bandits attacked worshippers during a live-streamed service.

Bassey emphasised that Nigeria is a great nation and urged citizens to pray for courage and willpower for the government, armed forces, and stakeholders to tackle these evils.

Bassey wrote on X, “I believe with all my heart that this is the time and season for the enemies of this nation to be judged once and for all – terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and all who fund, sponsor, and support them. If we miss this season, we may never get it again.

“Nigeria, in my opinion, is one of the greatest nations on earth. And this is also why there is such contention against the soul of this nation”.

He referenced Deuteronomy 7, highlighting the need to conquer enemies and fulfill Nigeria’s prophetic destiny.

“It’s a new season for NIGERIA, and just like in Deuteronomy 7, there are enemies we have to conquer! And as long as we ignore and pretend about these evils, the destiny of this nation will only remain a wish. NIGERIA, it is time! These killers, kidnappers, bandits, and the architects of these evil systems and structures, as well as their sympathizers, must be judged! We pray for will and courage for the government, the armed forces, the intelligence community, and every stakeholder (including the citizens), like never before, to arise with one voice.

“But like Mordecai said to Esther, if you remain silent, help will come from another source. So it shall be for Nigeria. Every one or group of persons who have determined that Nigeria will not rest, may their end come now! In Jesus’ name.

“Peace shall reign in Nigeria. Nigeria shall prosper and fulfil her prophetic destiny. In Jesus’ name. amen. God bless Nigeria!”

The attack in Kwara is just one of many violent incidents in the region, with 25 students recently abducted from a girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State.

Other Nigerian celebrities, including Funke Akindele and Falz, have also condemned the attacks, calling for urgent action to address the growing insecurity in the country.

Reps seek reduction in age to contest Senate, governorship seats to 30

The House of Representatives has taken steps towards amending the 1999 Constitution to further reduce the age for those willing to contest elective positions in the country.

As part of the efforts, the House passed for second reading a Constitution amendment Bill to reduce the age for qualification for membership of the Senate and Office of the Governor, sponsored by Martin Esin Etim and 24 others.

The constitution currently sets 35 as the minimum age for candidates wishing to contest the Senate and governorship, while those contesting the House of Representatives seats are pegged at a minimum of 25.

Leading the debate on the general principle of the bill, the Akwa Ibom lawmaker who represents Offong/Oruko/Udung Uko federal constituency, said the age threshold for higher offices restricts the political advancement of young Nigerians.

The lawmaker argued that the existing half-decade between eligibility for the House and the Senate or governorship limits the progression of young legislators who begin their careers early, adding that many lawmakers who enter the House at 25 and complete two four-year terms would be 33 but still unable to contest for the Senate or governorship.

According to him, the bill proposes a reduction of the age requirement from 35 to 30, maintaining a five-year gap between eligibility for the House and the higher offices.

He said, “If a member of this house at 25 years spends two terms in the House of Representatives, he will be 33 years and he will still not be qualified to go to the Senate or to become a governor.

“So, I think that this honourable house should look into it and we maintain the gap between the office of the governor and senate, as it were, and that of the house for the five years that it has always been.”

2025 All Judges Conference: NJI faults claim judges sang solidarity song for Tinubu

The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has faulted misleading and inaccurate reports circulating on social media, suggesting that judges in attendance at the opening ceremony of the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference sang a political chorus – “on your mandate we shall stand” – in allegiance to President Bola Tinubu, who was at the event.

The NJI, in a statement by its spokesman, Kolade Umoru, also faulted the false narrative that the national anthem was not rendered before the event commenced.

The statement, issued on Wednesday, reads: “The attention of the National Judicial Institute (NJI) has been drawn to several misleading and inaccurate reports circulating on social media suggesting that judges in attendance at the opening ceremony of the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference sang a political chorus (“on your mandate we shall stand”) in allegiance to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This claim is entirely false, unfounded, and does not reflect the events that transpired at the ceremony.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the national anthem was the only song rendered collectively by all participants at both the commencement and conclusion of the opening ceremony.

“No judge in attendance sang or chanted any political song at any point during the programme. The brief rendition of the tune – “on your mandate” – was not initiated, requested, or endorsed by the Judiciary.

“It was played solely by the Guards Brigade Band as part of their ceremonial protocol to usher the President to the podium for his address.

“The Judiciary had no control over the musical selections of the Brigade, which operates under military ceremonial procedures.

“Out of due deference to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, judges rose to their feet as the President walked to the podium.

“The Judiciary remains strictly non-partisan, deeply committed to constitutional neutrality, and wholly insulated from political activities or symbols of political allegiance.

“The 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference is a statutory and professional gathering focused on strengthening the justice system and reinforcing public confidence in the Judiciary.

“Any attempt to distort the solemnity of the event or attribute political motives to judicial officers is unfortunate, misleading, and a disservice to the public.

“We urge members of the public and the media to exercise restraint, verify information, and avoid amplifying falsehoods capable of undermining the integrity of national institutions.

“The Judiciary will continue to uphold its oath of office with dignity, independence, and unwavering fidelity to the Constitution.”

SDP condemns PDP Wadata plaza crisis

    …calls for protection of democracy

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, on Wednesday condemned Tuesday’s crisis at Wadata Plaza, the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Abuja.

Gabam described it as a “brazen display of anarchy” that threatens the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement made available to reporters in Abuja, Gabam said some people were mobilized to suppress dissenting voices, warning that such actions erode public confidence and weaken the rule of law.

He said, “The spectacle, witnessed by many, suggests a disturbing trend in which state structures are repurposed to silence dissent. Such actions erode public confidence and threaten the very foundations of our nascent democracy. It is imperative that the rule of law be upheld, and that no entity feels above the constitutional order that safeguards citizens’ rights”.

The SDP chairman also criticized security agencies, accusing them of harassing political opponents instead of protecting lives and property.

According to him, “The security agencies, whose duty is to protect lives and property, have become instruments of harassment and intimidation against political opponents

“This shift undermines the principle of law enforcement and fuels public fear. When those sworn to defend the nation target dissenting voices, the social contract weakens, and the democratic fabric frays. Citizens deserve assurance that security forces will act impartially, safeguarding all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation and fostering lasting trust and national unity”.

He emphasised that impartial law enforcement is essential to fostering trust, national unity, and a stable democratic society.

Gabam further called attention to ongoing security challenges, including the death of a Brigadier General in Borno State and the abduction of students in Kebbi State, urging the President to prioritize these crises.

“The nation is in mourning, and decisive action is needed to address these pressing challenges,” he said.

Highlighting what he described as a dangerous pattern of political maneuvering, Gabam warned against the abuse of constitutional processes to silence opposition, pointing out that such tactics have previously destabilized the SDP and now threaten other parties.

Gabam recalled that, “President Bola Tinubu once stood as a leading figure within the opposition, championing democratic principles that enabled his ascent to office through the merger of ACN, CPC, ANPP, and other parties.

He counselled that the sacrifices made in pursuit of democratic governance should not be eroded during President Tinubu’s tenure, saying that, “It is upon him to uphold the values that paved his path, fostering a climate where dissent is respected and unity is prioritized over partisan advantage for all.

He pointed out that the challenges confronting the nation should serve as a catalyst for unity, rather than an excuse for division.

    Group deepens gender equity reforms

The Rise Up Together, a global social impact organisation, has launched the empowerment of 25 local civil society leaders to drive gender equity reforms.

The organisation said the initiative has become imperative as a strategic step toward tackling persistent gaps affecting women, girls, and gender-nonconforming people across Nigeria.

The beneficiaries were drawn from the Federal Capital Territory, Rivers, Anambra, Kaduna, and Nasarawa States to drive lasting change for women, girls, and gender-nonconforming people.

According to Theresa Effa, Rise Up Together’s Nigeria Country Director, the organisation’s 2025 Leadership and Advocacy Accelerator is designed to strengthen advocacy, influence policy outcomes, and expand access to health, education, and economic opportunities in their communities.

She said Rise Up Together noted that the initiative, supported by Cummins Inc, aligns with its broader commitment to advancing gender equity and justice through leadership development and advocacy, adding that the intensive training programme is aimed at preparing them to drive policy and systems change.

The organisation said the week-long Accelerator is a globally recognised immersive programme that equips participants with the strategies and resources needed to strengthen health, education, and economic opportunities through improved laws, policies, and programmes.

According to the Country Director, the participants will undergo training in leadership, advocacy, policy change, and movement building, after which they will be eligible to apply for competitive grant funding to implement locally led advocacy projects on economic inclusion, education, healthcare access, and women’s rights.

The organization highlighted past successes of its Nigerian alumni, citing the example of Nsini Udonta, who joined the programme in 2018 and used the training and grant support to expand her work with Project Alert on Violence Against Women.

Her intervention, according to the organization, contributed to protecting an estimated 4.5 million women and girls from gender-based violence through fast-tracked domestic violence cases in Lagos.

Rise Up Together said Nsini’s work reflects the ripple effect of its leadership model, which aims to turn dedicated advocates into drivers of long-term policy and social transformation.

“I became a Rise Up Leader because I want to do more, I want to see changes in policies and practices to actually improve women’s rights,” Nsini said.

Dr. Nawani Aboki, Executive Director of the Center for Women, Youth and Community Action and one of the facilitators of the 2025 Accelerator, said the programme is designed to enhance the capacity of leaders to influence policy and expand community access to critical services.

“The energy, creativity, and dedication I’ve seen from Nigerian leaders is truly inspiring – they are poised to lead change that will be felt for generations.

“During the Accelerator, we will work alongside these leaders to strengthen their advocacy skills and leadership capacity so they can influence policy, expand access to education and health care, and create economic opportunities that truly uplift our local communities,” Aboki said.

Rise Up Together stated that since 2009, it has built a global network of more than 800 leaders across Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and the United States, collectively contributing to over 218 new and improved laws and policies benefiting more than 172 million people worldwide.

The NGF Chairman also disclosed the group’s “comprehensive Gender Equality and Women’s Economic Empowerment Strategic Plan 2025 to 2029, which is aligned with the National Gender Policy, the National WEE Policy, and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

He added that the same plan outlines ambitious, yet achievable targets for mainstreaming gender perspectives in governance, budget processes, and legal reforms throughout the country.”

Reaffirming the NGF’s role in scaling national programmes, Governor AbdulRazaq said: “The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has integrated the Nigeria for Women Programme into state-level plans and priorities.

“Initially piloted in six states, the program has now expanded its operations to 31 states, reflecting widespread acceptance and implementation across Nigeria,” he added.

The NGF Chairman applauded leading states, stating, “The adoption of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy at the state level continues to gain momentum, with states such as Kaduna, Kwara, and Lagos leading the way.

“All other states are committed to domesticating the policy, ensuring inclusion and empowerment in every one of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.”

Earlier, while declaring the event open, NGF’s Director General, Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, restated NGF’s commitment to gender equity as a core driver of development.

Shittu said, “I am truly pleased to officially open the inaugural Community of Practice for Commissioners of Women Affairs in Nigeria.

He added, “The NGF remains strongly committed to strengthening gender equity, inclusive governance, and the economic empowerment of women across all states.

“Sustainable development is impossible when half of the population is left behind, and empowering women creates a multiplier effect that strengthens households, communities, and state economies.”

Shittu noted that the CoP was meant to encourage shared learning and joint action, adding: “Collaboration, not isolation, is the gateway to real progress.

Giving the commitment speech on behalf of the states’ Women Affairs Commissioners, the holder of that portfolio in Cross River State, Edema Irom, described the development as “historic and timely.”

Irom, who is the Deen of Commissioners for Women Affairs, explained that the event came at a time when “women’s economic empowerment, political inclusion, and improved governance structures are national priorities.”

She outlined five commitments the commissioners will champion: full domestication of the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy, stronger coordination with national and development partners, increased representation of women in leadership and the expansion of data-driven programmes such as the Nigeria for Women Project, and the use of the Community of Practice for peer learning and harmonization of state efforts.

She added, “Progress for women and girls is inseparable from the nation’s growth. The commitments made today represent a strong start toward a more inclusive future where women’s participation and potential are fully recognized,” she said.

In her contribution, the Director of Gender Affairs at the NGF Secretariat, Hauwa Haliru, described the CoP as “a collaborative platform established to enhance gender equality, women’s empowerment, and inclusive governance across all states.”

Ms. Haliru said the forum creates a space for commissioners to “learn from one another, share best practices, and collectively address shared challenges and opportunities in policy design, implementation, and advocacy for women and girls.”

She added, “By fostering this network under the leadership of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Secretariat and in collaboration with the Dean of Women Affairs Commissioners, the COP aims to drive measurable progress on subnational gender priorities.”

On its vision, Haliru said the COP is “a national platform that accelerates results, peer learning, advocacy, and coordinated leadership for advancing women’s economic empowerment, because the platform connects commissioners, leverages shared expertise, and amplifies collective influence.”

She detailed the objectives of the COP, noting that it will facilitate the exchange of best practices and policy lessons, organize training, drive coherence in gender-related policies, promote collaboration with key stakeholders, develop joint monitoring strategies, and showcase innovative solutions for tackling emerging issues.

On the platform’s effectiveness, she said the commissioners will “advocate as a group, shaping the national agenda and donor engagement,” with dedicated sessions for troubleshooting, peer learning, and adopting practical solutions.

She highlighted key activities such as knowledge sharing sessions, quarterly review meetings, state-to-state mentoring, and rapid response task teams for policy and operational needs.

UK–Nigeria mission eyes $32m market gap, connects women exporters

The country’s efforts to deepen women’s participation in global trade received a major boost this week as the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) convened a UK-funded trade mission in Abuja, connecting 30 Nigerian women-led businesses with 12 UK importers.

The mission is aimed at unlocking an estimated $32 million in untapped export potential between the two countries.

Backed by the UK government under the SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme, the three-day mission (18–20 November) focuses on agrifood and beauty products—two sectors where Nigerian women entrepreneurs already show strong competitiveness but low formal export participation.

Speaking at the opening session, British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Lever OBE, said the UK remains committed to strengthening market access for Nigerian women entrepreneurs.

“The UK is committed to supporting Nigerian women entrepreneurs to access international markets and grow their businesses.

“This SheTrades mission demonstrates the enormous potential for Nigerian agrifood and beauty products in the UK market. The success we’ve already seen, with over $300,000 in sales generated, shows what’s possible when we unlock opportunities for women in trade,” Lever said.

She noted that the mission builds on the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which grants duty-free and quota-free access to at least 92 per cent of Nigerian products entering the UK market.

NEPC’s Executive Director/CEO, Nonye Ayeni, emphasised that women remain central to driving Nigeria’s export expansion.

“The best man for the job is a woman because women are resilient, dogged, and determined. We have the spirit that never says die. Women!!! Nothing dies in our hands,” she said.

Ayeni added that the mission aligns with NEPC’s efforts to broaden Nigeria’s non-oil export base by integrating women-led businesses into high-value international markets.

ITC Programme Manager for SheTrades Commonwealth+, Michelle Kristy, said there is a strong appetite for Nigerian-made agrifood and beauty products among UK buyers.

She said, “The potential for Nigerian women-led businesses and their products to enter the UK market is truly immense.

“This trade mission is about building bridges, connecting these talented women entrepreneurs with potential buyers and providing them a platform to flourish.”

The Abuja mission follows a series of engagements earlier in the year, including participation of 5 Nigerian women-led firms at Halal Expo Manchester, and business-to-business meetings in the UK, over $300,000 in new sales and leads generated across agrifood and beauty categories.

ITC is also partnering with Nigeria’s Bureau of Public Procurement and the UN CEDAW Committee to finalise an affirmative procurement policy that will open public tenders to women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other excluded groups.

Between 2024 and 2025, the SheTrades Commonwealth+ Programme has trained more than 1,000 Nigerian women entrepreneurs in branding, digital marketing, and export readiness. It has also supported shea product manufacturers in meeting certification and audit requirements, while hosting major exhibitions, including the HerShowcase event in Abuja, which featured over 75 women-led brands.

NEPC continues to host the SheTrades Nigeria Hub, a platform providing export advisory, capacity building, and market linkages for women-led businesses across the country.

Africa committed to setting agenda for sustainable gold, gemstone development – Alake

The Chairman of Africa Minerals Strategy Group and Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has said that decisive steps are being taken by the continent to strengthen value addition, regional collaboration, and sustainable growth in the gemstones and gold value chain.

He disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja at a pre-event news conference ahead of the 4th African Gems and Jewellery Exhibition & Conference and the Gold & Gemstone Conference and Exhibition (AGJEC/GGCE 2025), scheduled to hold in Lagos.

Alake noted that the conference with the theme, “Accelerating Collaboration for Sustainable Gold and Gem Development in Africa,” will be a reflection of a shared ambition to transform the sector for the benefit of all Africans.

Stressing that a third of the global mineral resources are domiciled in Africa, but lamented that the continent earns only a marginal share of the world’s mineral value.

Represented by the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund, Fatima Shinkafi, the Minister, however, said that the gap should be a major opportunity for growth and collective prosperity.

The Minister then highlighted the ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which include enhanced transparency, accelerated geological data gathering, improved local refining and manufacturing, and the formalization of artisanal mining.

He stressed that these reforms are targeted at safeguarding mining communities, increasing revenue, and making solid minerals a pillar of Nigeria’s industrial development.

The Minister stressed that gold and gemstones hold immense potential to create jobs and empower women and youth, as the value of a polished gem or crafted jewellery piece can multiply significantly across the value chain.

He then reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to responsible sourcing and certification and the transition from exporting raw minerals to producing world-class finished products.

Commending Women in Mining in Nigeria for promoting inclusivity, the Minister promised the group government continued support for training, community development, and safer mining practices.

On the details of the conference, Alake said “AGJEC/GGCE 2025” will feature technical sessions, mentorship programmes, and workshops designed to expand youth and women’s involvement in the industry.

He added that the conference will also advance regional integration and help Africa maximise benefits under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The Minister then expressed optimism that the Lagos conference will further strengthen Nigeria’s path toward building a world-class minerals sector.

President of Women in Mining in Nigeria, Mrs. Janet Adeyemi, said Nigerian women are emerging as key leaders in the mining industry.

She also noted that natural resources of the continent must be managed responsibly for future generations and warned that excluding women, who constitute half of the population, undermines progress.

Akume mourns veteran journalist, Agbese, says Nigeria has lost a national treasure

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has described the death of veteran journalist and columnist, Mr. Dan Agbese, as a colossal national loss, saying his passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill.

In a condolence statement issued on Tuesday, the SGF said Agbese’s demise came at a critical moment in the nation’s democratic journey, noting that his “fatherly role and vast experience” would be deeply missed by both the media and the country at large.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Terrence Kuanum, Akume hailed the late journalist as one of the pioneer trailblazers of Nigeria’s modern press, recalling his prominent role in challenging military rule and championing the restoration of democracy.

“His death is a monumental national loss. Dan Agbese was a fine gentleman to the core. He was a man of strong conviction with unimpeachable character and unwavering determination to achieve great goals against all odds. His penchant for justice, equity, and fairness set him apart from the rest,” the SGF said.

He praised Agbese’s sharp prose, incisive commentary, and decades-long dedication to journalism, which he said helped shape modern investigative reporting and Nigeria’s socio-political discourse.

“The late Dan Agbese was a doyen of journalism and a merchant of biting satire. He was such a versatile, bold, and confident writer whose quill dripped brutal frankness. A mentor and father who professionally refined his mentees and turned them into masters of the pen craft,” Akume added.

The SGF urged the Agbese family, friends, and colleagues in the media industry to take solace in the exemplary life he lived, praying that God grant repose to his soul.
