Tort law affects the everyday lives, says Olanipekun

Tort law affects the everyday lives of Nigerians in ways often overlooked, a former Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), has said.

He spoke at the presentation of a new legal treatise widely described by scholars and practitioners as a timely and significant contribution to Nigerian jurisprudence.

The book: “Contemporary Law of Tort in Nigeria,” is written by Uche Val Obi (SAN).

It was unveiled at a well-attended ceremony in Lagos that drew leading lights of the legal profession.

Olanipekun, who chaired the event, described the publication as “a remarkable contribution to the very heart of legal practice.”

He said: “Tort law shapes how society allocates responsibility and remedies harm.

“By producing a modern, deeply researched text, Obi has provided the courts and practitioners with a reliable compass for navigating contemporary challenges.”

Prof. Fabian Ajogwu (SAN), who reviewed the work, underscored its academic depth and practical relevance to modern legal practice.

He praised Obi’s scholarship, describing the text as “a masterful blend of doctrine and practicality.”

He noted that the work goes beyond orthodox tort principles to interrogate emerging and evolving areas of liability.

Ajogwu said: “This is the kind of scholarship that strengthens jurisprudence.

“It speaks not only to where the law has been, but to where litigation in Nigeria is headed.”

Obi expressed gratitude for the turnout and stated that the book was the culmination of more than three decades of legal practice and scholarship.

He explained that the motivation for the work was a desire to reinforce the foundations of Nigerian civil justice while responding to global and technological shifts influencing tort law.

“I felt compelled to write a text that reflects our local realities while engaging with global developments,” Obi said.

“My hope is that it will serve as a dependable companion to students, scholars, and practitioners for years to come.”

The SANi, who is also the author of the widely cited Class Actions in Nigeria, stressed that tort law remains one of the most dynamic areas of litigation.

He said the book examines core doctrines such as negligence, nuisance, and vicarious liability, while also engaging newer issues arising from social and technological change.

Obi said: “Society is evolving, technology is advancing, and the law must evolve with it. “This work attempts to capture that evolution.”

Many of the distinguished audience of judges, senior advocates, academics, and law students highlighted the book’s depth, clarity, and relevance at a time when civil liability litigation is becoming increasingly complex.

Register every member or be removed, Yilwatda warns coordinators

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has directed all state coordinators of the party’s ongoing nationwide electronic membership registration exercise to ensure all members are registered.

He also warned that failure by the coordinators to live up to their responsibility may cost them their appointments.

Yilwatda handed down the warning on Monday in a meeting with all the State Registration Coordinators at the National Secretariat of the APC in Abuja.

The directive came on the heels of the disclosure by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru that the party had registered over two million members within one week of the take-off of the nationwide exercise in some states.

The ongoing registration exercise is scheduled to end on January 30, 2026.

Addressing the coordinators, the National Chairman said no member of the party is left unregistered and warned that any coordinator who fails would be replaced.

According to Yilwatda, the position of coordinator is not ceremonial but a responsibility to strengthen the party.

“If any coordinator does not get all members registered in his or her state, we will drop you and appoint another person. The position you occupy is an opportunity to make the party better,” he said.

Yilwatda reminded the Coordinators that they are the foot soldiers of the party, stressing that when party structures at the state level are strong and functional, the party itself becomes strong.

He also charged State Party Chairmen to cooperate fully with the coordinators to ensure a seamless and successful exercise.

“Nobody contests elections at the National Secretariat. Elections are won or lost at the state, senatorial, constituency, local government, and ward levels. The performance of the party rests squarely on you,” he stated.

The Chairman decried a situation where the party claims millions of members in a state but records very low votes during elections, describing such discrepancies as unacceptable going forward.

He disclosed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) has created a conducive environment to ensure the success of all party programmes and insisted that party structures at all levels must begin to reflect real membership strength.

The chairman further warned that any State Executive Committee (SEC) member who fails to register before January 30, 2026, will be removed from office, stressing that NEC, the second highest organ of the party after the Convention, has the constitutional authority to enforce compliance.

He implored all the State Chairmen to support the drive of this registration exercise. It is not negotiable. This warning must be sounded from the state level down to the ward level,” he said.

Yilwatda also condemned sharp practices aimed at blocking or excluding party members from the registration process.

“No Chairman, no Coordinator, and not even a Governor has the power to stop any party member from being registered. No one must be disenfranchised,” he warned.

To ensure speed and efficiency, the Chairman directed coordinators to use Android phones where tablets are unavailable, stressing that no state should delay the exercise waiting for devices.

He urged Coordinators to avoid making the exercise unnecessarily expensive for state governments and disclosed that in his own state, registration officials were recruited from within their wards to ease logistics.

Giving an update on progress, Professor Yilwatda revealed that Delta State is currently leading, followed by Lagos, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Plateau States, and encouraged other states to emulate their pace and commitment.

He announced that he would review the progress of the progress in five days.

The APC Chairman also linked the electronic registration to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, stressing that the party must reflect the same spirit of modernization and accountability.

“We need accurate data to support the President. We must be different from all other parties. We cannot make decisions on faulty premises. This registration must succeed,” he declared.

He explained that the electronic registration, the first of its kind by any political party in Nigeria, will give APC a credible, verifiable and real-time membership database, enhance internal democracy, improve campaign planning, eliminate fraud, and ensure that party resources are deployed based on real and reliable data.

US revokes over 100,000 visas in one year

The United States has revoked more than 100,000 visas in the last one year of President Donald Trump’s administration, the Department of State declared.

Trump has an anti-migrant policy. The State Department said 8,000 of the revoked visas were for students.

The Department of Homeland Security last month said that the Trump administration has deported more than 605,000 people and that 2.5 million others left on their own.

U.S Department of State on its X stated: “The State Department has now revoked over 100,000 visas, including some 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas for individuals who had encounters with U.S. law enforcement for criminal activity.

“We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe.”

State Department spokesman, Tommy Pigott further stated: “The Trump administration has no higher priority than protecting American citizens and upholding American sovereignty.”

The figure since Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, is two and a half times the number revoked in 2024, when Joe Biden was President.

The State Department said that “thousands” of the visas were revoked over crimes, which can include assault and also drunk driving.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted revocation of visas from students who protested against Israel.

Rubio used a McCarthy-era law that allows the United States to block entry to foreigners seen as going against US foreign policy, although some of his high-profile targets successfully challenged deportation orders in court.

  • Disquiet, heavy security as Kano Gov joins APC

Disquiet, heavy security as Kano Gov joins APC

There was a tense atmosphere and disquiet in Kano state on Monday, following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was rescheduled to Monday after the January 5 date.

Governor Yusuf won the 2023 election on the platform of the NNPP but decided to join the ruling APC to improve on his development efforts in the state, his aides say.

It was also learnt that Yusuf’s decision stems from the unresolved leadership crises and multiple court cases within the NNPP that could jeopardise his mandate.

Although, there was no official speech from the State Government or formal ceremony heralding the defection, it was clear that the Governor and his administration were no longer of the NNPP platform.

Unlike before the defection, some government officials were walking around the Government House premises with caps emblazoned with the infinity insignia of the famous President Bola Tinubu’s freedom cap.

The Tinubu cap had surfaced since Sunday at a Government House function attended by the Governor and cabinet members.

The NNPP flag at the main entrance to the seat of power was removed leaving the pole naked, while new national flags were flying.

The NNPP flag at the Deputy Governor’s Office was also seen removed when The Nation correspondent visited the two premises.

Senior government officials were not in their offices, except their junior counterparts spotted holding talks in groups.

The discussants did not wear the Kwankwasiyya caps and their discussions were not without the defection.

Heavy security apparatuses, including armoured tanks and personnel, were deployed at the State Government House.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Service (DSS) and those of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were seen tightening security at the gate of the State House.

A grapevine source told The Nation that the Governor skipped the ceremony to prevent violence.

“We are no longer in NNPP. The most important things about the defection to APC have been done and the process is still ongoing,” a member of the cabinet told The Nation on Monday.

Credible sources told The Nation that Yusuf was billed to fly abroad with his loyal stakeholders to brief President Tinubu, having defected.

It was gathered the ceremony was skipped to avoid violence between the governor’s supporters and those of his benefactor Rabiu Kwankwaso who has kicked against the defection.

Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano, who doubles as factional leader of the NNPP, has vehemently disapproved the move, insisting that the governor should relinquish his position if he must defect.

The disagreement between Yusuf and Yusuf has divided the state.

It was however, gathered Governor Yusuf decamped with all the chairmen of local government councils and all NNPP House of Assembly members to the APC.

Trump buddy, Joe Lonsdale, invests in Nigerian drone startup Terrahaptix

One of President Donald Trump’s loudest and richest supporters, Joe Lonsdale, has led investors to raise $11.7 million for Terrahaptix, a Nigerian startup that builds defence drones to bolster security systems across Africa.

Lonsdale is also the founder of Palantir Technologies.

Terrahaptix was co-founded by 22-year-old Nathan Nwachukwu and 24-year-old Maxwell Maduka in 2024 to tackle terrorism and insecurity crises assailing the continent.

Nwachukwu said Terrahaptix secured $11.7 million in a funding round led by 8VC, a company founded by Mr Lonsdale.

Other companies that invested in Terrahaptix include Valor Equity Partners, Lux Capital, SV Angel, Leblon Capital GmbH, Silent Ventures LLC, Nova Global, and angel investor Melya Malka.

A non-executive director at Palantir and key figure at 8VC, Alex Moore, joined Terrahaptix’s board of directors last year, the startup said in a statement yesterday.

Terrahaptix has its factory in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, where it builds drones, sentry towers, and unmanned ground vehicles to detect threats to infrastructure assets and immediately alert security outfits to the situation.

The startup had previously secured contracts valued at over $12 million guarding infrastructure assets in Africa as of August 2025.

“Africa is industrialising faster than any other region, with new mines, refineries, and power plants emerging every month. But none of that progress will matter if we don’t solve the continent’s greatest Achilles’ heel, which is insecurity and terrorism,” Nwachuku was quoted as saying by Bloomberg in a report.

He said Terrahaptix’s mission is “to give Africa the technological edge needed for resource protection and counterterrorism.”

The new funding, the startup said, will be used to expand its operations across Africa. Terrahaptix said it provided security solutions to Nigeria’s hydropower facilities and Ghana’s gold and lithium mining factories.

“Today, Terra has millions of dollars in commercial and government contracts. With this funding, we will ramp up defense production across Africa and scale our data intelligence OS,” he added.

  • Curfew, restriction as Badagry mourns Akran

Curfew, restriction as Badagry mourns Akran

Badagry, a historic coastal town renowned for its rich cultural heritage, was on Monday enveloped in a sombre and brooding mood following the passage of its 89-year-old monarch, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry.

The revered monarch, who reigned for 48 years, was a towering figure in the history and development of the ancient coastal town.

He was a former journalist before ascending the throne of his forefathers on April 23, 1977.

His long reign was marked by peace, unity and steady community development across Badagry and its environs.

As Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, his counsel and leadership carried significant influence within traditional institutions across the state.

He was widely respected as a devoted custodian of Ogu culture and tradition, as well as a passionate advocate for the welfare of his people.

From the early hours of the day, an unusual calm settled over the ancient kingdom as residents struggled to come to terms with the loss of their traditional ruler.

Markets that normally buzz with activity witnessed low patronage, while groups of residents gathered sparsely in streets and compounds, exchanging restrained conversations.

At the Akran’s palace, it was learnt that the atmosphere was pensive as chiefs and community leaders’ showed grief.

There were restrictions on vehicular movements around the palace vicinity with some sections of the road leading to the place barricaded. Commuters were said to be directed to take alternative routes.

Sources said the traditional worshippers may have started observing rites necessitated by the demise of the monarch. Security and palace officials were seen restricting movement in the immediate vicinity.

Residents said the rites would affect social and commercial activities around the palace and may force many residents especially those working outside Badagry to return home early.

Many residents described the late Akran as a symbol of unity, stability and cultural pride for Badagry. They recalled his role in preserving the town’s customs and mediating communal disputes, while youths spoke of a monarch who encouraged peace and respect for tradition amid modern challenges.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), some sons and daughters of the late king were at the palace, with some seen openly weeping.

A traditional chief, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Akran passed on at about 1:30 a.m., but confirmation of his death was made at about 5:30 a.m.

“The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, has been informed, and we hope he will relay the information to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for an official announcement.

“That is why many of us are seated here at the palace to receive visitors. The Akran has gone to rest with his great ancestors,” he said.

One injured as kidnappers demand N100m ransom for eight victims in Edo

Kidnappers of eight persons at Ibillo, Akoko-Edo local government area, are demanding for N100m ransom to release them.

The eight persons were abducted last Friday from the Star Boy hotel where they lodged.

One of the victims was said to have been shot while attempting to escape.

Okpahi of Imoga Kingdom, Oba Patrick Obajoye, stated this on Monday in a telephone conversation.

Oba Obajoye said the kidnappers arrived the hotel dressed in army uniform and pretended to be waiting for a visitor.

He said the kidnappers later seized owner of the hotel, seized his phone after which they abducted the lodgers, tied their hand and led them into the bush on foot.

According to him: “As it is now, the kidnappers have reduced the ransom to N70 million. When we begged for further reduction, they said one of the vehicles belonging to the hotelier should be sold to pay the ransom.

“Eight of them are currently in the kidnappers den including one woman. The kidnapping looked like an inside job if one considers the way the gunmen spoke to those negotiating the ransom.

“It is a very sad day for us in our community and we hope that this will end well for our indigenes. However, raising this money is a big task.

“Imagine, young men and a woman with a great life ahead of them being abducted at a hotel where they have gone to lodge after a function.”

Speaking on efforts to rescue the victims,  the monarch said attempts to track the kidnappers with modern gadgets were unsuccessful.

“We hope that the rescue move will continue so that the victims can reunite with their families.”

Edo Police spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, said she was yet to get details of the incident.

  • Customs commences new standards for regulation of courier firms

Customs commences new standards for regulation of courier firms

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the commencement of a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for regulating courier companies operating under the Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) Incoterm.

This implementation provides a unified framework for registration, manifest submission, declaration, valuation, clearance, delivery and compliance monitoring, in line with global best practices.

The DDP initiative derives its legal foundation from International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Incoterms 2020, relevant sections of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, WCO SAFE Framework of Standards, Revised Kyoto Convention, WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, NCS Courier Clearance Guidelines, and the Nigeria Postal Service Act 2023.

NCS National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada made this known in a statement.

He said under the newly commenced procedure, courier companies intending to operate the DDP regime are requested to obtain a license from the NCS Headquarters License and Permit Unit under the Tariff and Trade Department.

READ ALSO; NIN database hits 127 million enrolments nationwide, says NIMC

They are expected to submit all mandatory documents, including CAC registration papers, valid courier licenses, compliance bonds and a formal application to operate under DDP.

It is pertinent to note that all licensed operators are required to submit an Advance Electronic Manifest (AEM) 24 hours before shipment arrival, clearly indicating DDP as the Incoterm and providing complete details such as HS codes, item descriptions, values, origins and consignees, in line with the WCO safe framework of standards.

Maiwada said the SOP further mandates courier companies to act as declarants by filing Single Goods Declarations (SGDs) via the B’Odogwú platform.

Declarations should include the declared FOB values, supported by invoices, airway bills, and packing lists.

The statement reads in part: “Also, full payment of customs duties, VAT, and other statutory levies must be completed through authorised NCS payment channels before clearance. Additionally, risk-based cargo profiling will guide inspections, with physical examinations conducted when discrepancies or high-risk indicators are identified.

Delivery to the consignee is permitted only after full clearance, and Proof of Delivery (POD) must be provided upon request.

“To ensure strict adherence, the NCS has instituted a robust monitoring and enforcement mechanism through periodic Post-Clearance Audits (PCA). These audits will verify the accuracy of DDP declarations, prevent revenue leakages, and confirm compliance with classification and valuation standards. Violations, including false declarations, non-payment of duties, or operational misconduct, will attract sanctions such as suspension or revocation of clearance licences, seizure of goods, penalties with interest, and prosecution under the NCS Act, 2023. Courier operators are also required to submit monthly reports of all DDP shipments, including duty payments, classification details and delivery records, to the relevant Area Commands.

“With this commencement, the NCS reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the integrity of the clearance process, enhancing revenue assurance, facilitating legitimate trade and ensuring that courier operations under the DDP regime meet the highest global compliance standards.”

  • Nigeria, UAE to sign comprehensive economic partnership agreement at Tinubu–MBZ talks

Nigeria, UAE to sign comprehensive economic partnership agreement at Tinubu–MBZ talks

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are set to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) during a scheduled bilateral meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, on the sidelines of the ongoing Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in Abu Dhabi.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abu Dhabi, explaining that the agreement would formalise ongoing economic engagements, boost investor confidence and offer mutual protection for businesses operating in both countries.

According to Tuggar, the CEPA is a critical deliverable of President Tinubu’s participation in the sustainability summit, noting that several UAE investors had been eager for the agreement to be concluded to guarantee the safety and predictability of their investments in Nigeria.

“President Tinubu is going to have a bilateral with the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and one of the things to be discussed there is the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement which is expected to be signed during that bilateral meeting,” the Minister said.

READ ALSO; NIN database hits 127 million enrolments nationwide, says NIMC

He explained that beyond attracting UAE investments into Nigeria, the agreement would also safeguard Nigerian interests abroad, particularly in Dubai, where many Nigerians run businesses and factories.

“It also protects the investments of Nigerians. We have a lot of Nigerian businesses doing business in Dubai. Some actually even have factories. This further protects them, dignifies the Nigerian and ensures that Nigerians are respected wherever they go to invest or visit,” Tuggar added.

The Minister described Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week as a strategic platform that sits between global climate conferences, such as the recent COP, and helps participating countries move from declarations to implementation.

“The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week happens in between the COP. You need to concretise some of the agreements that have been reached; otherwise, it just ends up being a talk shop,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria’s participation was driven by the need to translate climate commitments into tangible outcomes, including funded and implementable projects, especially in areas where the country faces a deficit in project preparation.

“This presents an opportunity to come with identified projects and try to source funding from some of the countries and organisations that are in attendance,” Tuggar explained.

On priority sectors for Nigeria–UAE collaboration, the minister identified gas development for electricity generation as a major focus, stressing that inadequate investment in converting Nigeria’s vast gas resources into power has contributed to persistent electricity outages.

“We’re looking to invest further in gas for electricity. We have a lot of gas, and we need to develop it to power electricity. That is why we now have a lot of pipelines being constructed and a licensing round going on for acreage,” he said, adding that this would open more opportunities for exploration and production.

Tuggar also pointed to expanded trade relations, including agricultural commodities and manufacturing, as well as improved financial and aviation frameworks.

He recalled that challenges faced by airline operators over trapped funds were resolved after President Tinubu assumed office, easing travel and financial transactions for Nigerians abroad.

Speaking on President Tinubu’s expected address at the forum, the minister said the President would outline Nigeria’s climate change priorities, nationally determined contributions and the drive to make climate-related projects bankable to attract global funding.

“He will talk about Nigeria’s focus in terms of deliverables, our goals and commitments, and ensuring that the projects we bring forward are viable and can convince funders,” Tuggar said.

He added that Nigeria’s engagement at the forum underscores its commitment to sustainability, not only in tackling climate change but in doing so in a way that supports long-term economic growth and development.
