    …arrest 25 suspects during initiation

…recovers SUV highlander, motorcycle from cult leaders

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have foiled an alleged cult initiation ceremony at Uso community in Owo Local Government Area of the state, arresting 25 suspected members of a proscribed cult group.

The suspects were alleged to be members of the outlawed Black Axe confraternity, also known as the Neo Black Movement (NBM), while their arrest followed credible intelligence received by the police from concerned citizens.

According to the police, the suspects reportedly travelled from Lagos, Osun, and Edo states to Ondo State to participate in the initiation of new members into the cult group before they were caught and apprehended.

Their arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, and made available to journalists in Akure, the state capital.

“Acting swiftly on the information, operatives of the Command were mobilised and deployed using intelligence-led tactics to disrupt the planned initiation.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of twenty-five (25) suspects, drawn from Ondo State, Osun State, Lagos State, and Edo State, at the scene of the initiation,” Abayomi said.

He disclosed that one Toyota Highlander SUV and one unregistered Daylong motorcycle were recovered during the operation, adding that the suspects are currently in police custody.

Abayomi further revealed that the suspects have allegedly confessed to their involvement in cult-related activities and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Adebowale Lawal, lauded his men for their swift response, professionalism and dedication, stressing that the command would not relent in its fight against cultism across the state.

Lawal also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for his strategic leadership and continued support, which he said had strengthened the command’s anti-cultism operations.

The Ondo police boss, however, advised youths to shun cultism and other criminal activities, warning that such acts only lead to grave consequences.

He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state and urged the public to continue providing credible information to aid crime prevention.

Ondo APC chairman urges members to participate in e-registration

…says ongoing exercise key to party’s strength

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Ade Adetimehin, has called on party members and stalwarts across the 18 local government areas of the state to actively participate in the ongoing electronic registration (e-registration) and revalidation exercise.

Adetimehin said the nationwide e-registration exercise is crucial to the ruling party’s preparedness ahead of future general elections, noting that it is aimed at strengthening inclusiveness, cohesion and internal democracy within the APC.

The state APC chairman spoke at the weekend in his hometown of Idanre Local Government Area shortly after revalidating his membership during the ongoing nationwide e-registration and revalidation exercise of the party.

According to him, the exercise would enable the APC to build a credible and verifiable membership database, enhance internal democracy and improve coordination at all levels of the party.

“Let me use this opportunity to encourage our party members to actively participate in the ongoing e-registration exercise. The success of this process will determine how well we organise, plan and mobilise as a party. I urge all members to come out en masse and register.

“As the leading party in Ondo State and Nigeria, we should justify our numerical strength through proper documentation of our membership. I also encourage party leaders and stakeholders to not only participate but to intensify mobilisation and awareness creation at the grassroots,” he said.

Engr. Adetimehin explained that the exercise would capture new members as well as update the records of existing ones, thereby ensuring proper representation and participation in party activities.

While assuring members of fairness and transparency in the party’s affairs, he urged ward, local government and state executives to mobilise members to take advantage of the exercise, stressing that the process is simple, transparent and accessible.

He further assured that the party leadership would address any technical challenges that might arise during the exercise to ensure that no willing member is left out, while appealing to party stalwarts to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the process.

The APC chairman added that the e-registration aligns with the party’s commitment to reforms and the use of technology to deepen participation and accountability within its structures, noting that unity and discipline remain critical to the party’s progress in the state.

Engr. Adetimehin reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to justice, equity, fairness, and inclusive governance, assuring that the party would continue to carry the people along in all its programmes.

The e-registration exercise is expected to run across all wards in the state, with designated centres and officials assigned to guide members through the process.

“Many people who are seeing what President Tinubu is doing are willing to join the course. We must deliver, you must work, this government will be for the youths, we are going to programme a system that will reward the youths.”

He admonished the youths not to be lackadaisical about the forthcoming election, saying “We are eager to take over but we have yet to work towards it. God has given us a goal post and set us up to play penalty on an empty net, despite this, we should work assiduously.

Actress Yewande Adekoya recounts 2013 miscarriage experience

Actress Yewande Adekoya has opened up about a miscarriage she experienced in 2013, saying the incident strengthened her faith in God.

In a video posted on Instagram, Adekoya recounted how she was rushed to the hospital with severe bleeding during her first pregnancy, losing the baby, and being told an evacuation procedure was needed.

“A few years ago, I remember it was 2013. I was pregnant at the time. After some months, I started to bleed, so I was rushed to the hospital. I knew I was miscarrying, like I was about losing the baby.

“They told me the baby had died and we needed to do an evacuation. I had been told that evacuation was very painful. I was so sad that I’d lose my baby. I was in serious pain. I cried all through the night,” Adekoya said.

She explained that the fear of the procedure compounded her emotional distress, especially as it was her first pregnancy.

“I was also afraid of the evacuation process that was going to be done for me in the morning. If this whole miscarriage process is this painful, how would evacuation be?” she asked.

Adekoya described the experience as “devastating” and “terrifying,” but shared a vivid dream where a man in white, resembling a doctor, performed the procedure.

“In my dream, a man came to me. He was wearing white. He was dressed like a doctor. And then he came to me and said, ‘It is time.’ I said, ‘For what?’ He said, ‘For your evacuation process.

“As soon as I sat up in bed, I felt a heavy push in my bowel. I felt like something was coming through,” she narrated.

According to her, she woke up, and the miscarriage completed itself without medical intervention.

“As soon as I got into the bathroom and stood at the centre of the bathroom, the baby that died fell to the ground. Blood, formation, whatever. It fell to the ground.

“When the doctors came, they did a scan, and they said there would be no need for an evacuation because the baby was no longer there. It had come out itself, and I was fine to go home,” Adekoya stated.

Reflecting on the experience, Adekoya said it shaped her conviction about God’s presence in her life, stating, “I cannot come out and say there is no God because I have experienced a lot of things that I know are not ordinary.”

  • Foundation empowers 30 female medical students to close gender health gap

Foundation empowers 30 female medical students to close gender health gap

The Built for Her Foundation has launched a national scholarship programme aimed at strengthening female representation in Nigeria’s healthcare workforce as part of a broader effort to close the gender health gap and improve outcomes for women and girls.

Speaking at the inaugural scholarship event in Abuja, the founder of the foundation, Dr Teniola Saraki, said the initiative was driven by the conviction that women and girls must be deliberately included in health systems if equity and national development are to be achieved.

She said the foundation was established around the scholarship scheme, which is being implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Medical Students Association and targets 30 female medical students in their 400 level from accredited institutions across the six geopolitical zones.

“The foundation first came about due to the scholarship which we are announcing today. It’s a national scholarship in partnership with the Nigerian Medical Students Association, and it gives 30 beneficiaries from across all six geopolitical zones their 400-level tuition fees,” Dr Saraki said.

Beyond easing financial pressure, she explained that the programme is designed to provide long-term engagement and mentorship for beneficiaries throughout their medical education and professional careers, noting that women remain underrepresented in medicine.

“Female representation in the physician workforce is low, it’s below 50 percent. And so we’re really trying to include women in the healthcare workforce,” she said.

Noting that the increasing number of women doctors has system-wide benefits, Dr Saraki said, “More women in the healthcare workforce have multiple benefits in terms of healthcare utilization, policy, care delivery in hospitals and understanding the needs of women.

She described the gender health gap as a global concern, stressing that women spend significantly more time in poor health than men.

“Globally women spend 25 percent more of their time in poor health compared to men, which translates to seven more days every year and about nine more years over a lifetime,” she noted.

Dr Saraki explained that the scholarship is only the foundation’s first step, with plans to expand into research and programmes focused on conditions that disproportionately affect women.

She said: “In terms of the scholarship right now, there are 30 beneficiaries nationwide, and that’s just our first initiative. We will do our part to support women both in the healthcare workforce and as patients.”

Dr Saraki said the foundation’s work aligns with five pillars identified by McKinsey for closing the gender health gap, namely counting women, including women, studying women, caring for women and investing in women.

“The scholarship targets the pillar of including women,” she said, adding that the foundation’s broader mission is to address women’s health challenges through evidence-based interventions

She said beneficiaries were selected strictly on merit based on academic performance. Applications were received from medical schools nationwide, after which the highest-achieving students, five from each geopolitical zone, were chosen.

She disclosed that the programme was fully financed and is expected to run annually.

Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, Dr Mayowa Alade said the Federal Government welcomes initiatives that address gender disparities in health.

Pate noted that women’s health is central to national productivity and said current reforms under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative prioritise maternal and child health.

Founder of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Mrs Toyin Saraki, said sustainable national development cannot be achieved without prioritising the health and wellbeing of women and girls.

The former First Lady of Kwara State said persistent gaps in access, representation and investment continue to shape unequal health outcomes, adding that the Built for Her Foundation’s data-driven approach would help strengthen accountability.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Kwaru Mohammad-Idris described women’s health as the foundation of gender equity, stressing that health influences how women learn, work, care and lead.

She cautioned against limiting women’s health to reproductive issues alone, noting that many diseases affect women differently or more severely.

Citing McKinsey Institute data, she said 64 percent of women with interventional health needs do not receive effective care and that women globally spend an average of nine more years in poor health than men.

Underscoring the importance of the intervention, she commended Saraki’s Built For Her Foundation, describing Nigeria’s maternal mortality figures as unacceptable and noting that the initiative was both timely and necessary.

Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), FCT chapter, Dr Emeka Ayogu, said the scholarship was timely and would encourage more women to pursue medicine, while Ahmadu Delmi Sardauna, Ex Officio and the 48th President of the Nigerian Medical Students Association, said the initiative would inspire female students and strengthen the country’s health workforce.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Miss Hindat Abdulwahab, a fourth-year medical student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, described the scholarship as more than financial support, calling it a strong affirmation for women navigating the demanding medical profession.

She said medicine remains one of humanity’s noblest callings and a privilege that allows practitioners to support people in their most vulnerable moments.

  • Okechukwu blames Atiku’s ambition for strain on Nigeria’s democracy

Okechukwu blames Atiku’s ambition for strain on Nigeria’s democracy

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claim that the nation’s democracy is under threat due to alleged efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to weaken the opposition.

Okechukwu, a former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), said Atiku’s long-standing presidential ambition—not the current government—is responsible for any strain on the country’s democratic framework.

He made the remarks in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday while responding to Atiku’s recent warning.

He argued that a deeper reflection would show that the deterioration of Nigeria’s democratic culture began with Atiku’s decision to disregard the long-standing rotation convention during the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, this breach significantly contributed to the political imbalance and the weakening of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Okechukwu further accused the former PDP presidential candidate of taking the same path ahead of the 2027 elections with what he described as a “Kasuwa Ndollar” approach to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries. He said non-adherence to the rotation principle and Section 7 of the PDP Constitution played a major role in destabilising the party.

“Atiku Abubakar is, regrettably, one of the foremost culprits of this unforced error, which gravely cannibalised the PDP,” he stated.

He added that Atiku risks repeating past mistakes in the ADC, noting that no other presidential aspirant in the party can match his financial capacity.

Okechukwu recalled that the rotation convention, adopted at the onset of the Fourth Republic in 1999, was designed to reinforce unity, equity, and stability through the alternation of presidential power between the North and South.

He said Atiku benefitted from this arrangement, as he would not have become Vice President in 1999 without it.

He also referenced the commitment of northern political leaders such as Abubakar Rimi, Umaru Shinkafi, Adamu Ciroma, Bamanga Tukur, and Sola Saraki to the zoning formula, which enabled Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to contest after his release from detention during the Abacha era.

Okechukwu reminded Atiku of his departure from the 2014 PDP National Convention, when he protested that it was the North’s turn to produce the President, leading to his eventual defection to the APC.

“Whereas one admits that my great party APC, has its own fault lines, is it not a calamity that the same Atiku Abubakar, widely acknowledged as the mastermind of PDP’s rotation breach and its resultant destabilization, is now allegedly setting the stage for a similar breach within the ADC, when knows that our presidential primary is “Kasuwa Ndollar?”Okechukwu queried.

“Or should President Tinubu now be blamed for this fresh violation of the same zoning principle?” The deliberate breach of rotation

He therefore submitted that Atiku Abubakar’s assertion that “the systematic weakening of opposition platforms represents a grave danger to Nigeria’s democratic future” deserves more rigorous self-scrutiny and contextual honesty.

Accordingly,Okechukwu posited that Atiku cannot harvest Buhari’s 12 million Vote-Bank, because majority in the north subscribe to the rotation convention and also they know  him as Mai Kasuwa and among Nigeria’s less than transparent clan, therefore not Mai Gasakiya (incorruptible).
