Gbenga Hashim condemns killings in Kebbi, Kwara, calls for radical overhaul of security architecture

Former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has raised fresh alarm over what he described as the loss of operational control of security across Northern Nigeria, following renewed terrorist attacks in Kwara and Kebbi states.

In a statement, Hashim said the latest assaults—including the killing of two security operatives in Rogun Village, Kpada District, Patigi LGA, Kwara State, show that terrorists now operate across the North “without fear of the state.”

According to reports, gunmen stormed a police outpost in Rogun on Sunday night, engaging officers in a prolonged gunfight before overrunning the facility.

The attack came just days after 25 schoolgirls were abducted and a vice principal murdered in Kebbi State, alongside the killing of a senior Customs officer in Bagudo LGA.

“These coordinated attacks are evidence of a nation sliding toward total collapse,” Hashim declared. “From Niger to Zamfara, Kaduna to Plateau, Bauchi to Kebbi, and now Kwara, terrorists determine the rhythm of life in too many communities. The Federal Government has lost control.”

He described the Patigi attack as particularly disturbing, noting that the Middle Belt corridor had historically been relatively stable.

“This incident signals a dangerous expansion of terrorist activity and underscores a total failure of intelligence and policing,” he warned.

“What we are witnessing is a quiet surrender of northern Nigeria to non-state actors. Rural communities are under siege. Schools are unsafe. Police posts are now battlefields. This is not governance; this is abandonment,” Hashim added.

He further referenced recent reports of a serving military general ambushed after terrorists allegedly intercepted his communication, insisting the development proves insurgents now possess “advanced capability and extraordinary daring.”

“If terrorists can attack a police outpost in Kwara and kill officers without consequences, what hope is left for villagers? If 25 girls can be abducted in Kebbi without immediate rescue, what remains of the meaning of government?” he asked.

Hashim stressed that effective state authority is now largely confined to state capitals, while “vast rural territories have fallen under the shadow of armed groups.”

“Outside the state capitals, sovereignty is collapsing. Villages are governed by fear, by bandits, by terrorists. The silence from those in power is complicity. Many villagers now pay taxes to terrorists,” he lamented.

He condoled with the families affected by the Kwara and Kebbi attacks and called for an urgent national response, including a radical overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.

“Unless drastic steps are taken now, Nigeria risks tumbling into a new and uncontrollable phase of disintegration,” Hashim warned.

  • FG assures Kogi of full 13% derivation allocation

FG assures Kogi of full 13% derivation allocation

The federal government has assured Kogi state that it will receive its full entitlement from the 13 per cent derivation fund following its recent recognition as an oil-producing state.

Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, gave the assurance on Tuesday when he hosted Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and a delegation of senior Kogi State officials at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja for an interactive session on the state’s eligibility and access to the fund.

A statement from the RMAFC said Dr. Shehu assured the Kogi state delegation that the Commission is committed to ensuring a fair and lawful distribution of revenue to every beneficiary.

“Whatever issue you table before us, we will try as much as possible, within the provisions of the law, to see that Kogi State gets what it deserves,” he stated.

He added that RMAFC’s responsibility is to guarantee that all allocations due to Kogi—whether from oil, gas, or solid minerals—are properly recorded and protected.

“We will stand firmly with you to provide the data, guidance, and technical support needed to optimize these resources for the benefit of your citizens,” he said.

To fast-track the process, Dr. Shehu directed the immediate constitution of a joint committee comprising officials from RMAFC’s Gas Investments and Crude Oil Departments, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Kogi State government. The committee is expected to address the issues raised and propose solutions.

Governor Ododo expressed concern over the state’s inability to benefit from its abundant natural resources. He questioned why Kogi had yet to receive any part of the 13 percent derivation despite its status as an oil-producing state.

He sought clarity on ongoing oil and gas activities, expressing optimism that the Commission would handle the matter with diligence.

“I thank you most sincerely for this warm reception and for your vision. We look forward to continued engagement with the Commission to ensure that the resources of Kogi State are fully optimized and benefit our people,” he said.

During the meeting, several RMAFC commissioners and experts made contributions. Federal Commissioner representing Kebbi State, Barr. Rakiya Tanko Ayuba-Haruna said the 13 per cent derivation provided for under the 1999 Constitution is treated with utmost seriousness and stressed that accurate data is crucial for states to receive their rightful allocations.

Hon. (Amb.) Desmond Akawor, Federal Commissioner for Rivers State, advised the Kogi delegation to study existing post-Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) frameworks to better understand their contractual rights and obligations and avoid future complications.

On solid minerals, Dr. Udodirim Okongwu, Director of the Inland Revenue Department, who represented the Secretary to the Commission, assured the governor that RMAFC has the authority to obtain all necessary data.

She encouraged the state to establish mineral buying centres to ensure proper attribution for all solid mineral transactions.

Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Ashiru Asiwaju, stated that the government is committed to attracting more players in the oil and gas sector by making critical information available to drive investment.

Mrs. Ekekhide Jennifer, Assistant Director and Head of the NUPRC delegation, confirmed ongoing crude production from OPL 915 (now OML 155).

She also stated the importance of strengthening security and infrastructure to create an enabling environment for investors.

The meeting reflected a joint commitment by RMAFC and Kogi State to improve fiscal governance, promote transparency in managing derivation funds, and ensure that the state fully benefits from its oil, gas, and solid mineral assets for the development and welfare of its people.

Varsity Don tasks new Kaduna NIESV exco on promotion of FG tax laws

Members of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Kaduna branch, have been urged to promote the federal government’s new tax policy in their professional services, benefiting both clients and the government.

The advice was delivered on Tuesday during the investiture of the branch’s 16th Chairman, Ishaq Ayodeji Bello, by University don and guest lecturer, Dr. Isuwa Dauda, who highlighted the benefits of the Nigerian Tax Reform Act of 2025.

Dr. Dauda, a senior lecturer in the Department of Accountancy at Kaduna State University (KASU), described the 2025 tax reforms as “the most ambitious and far-reaching restructuring of the country’s tax system in decades.”

He explained that the reforms aim to align tax policy with the realities of a modern economy, creating a more efficient, transparent, and equitable fiscal framework that encourages growth, improves compliance, and strengthens government revenue.

Urging NIESV members in the state to collaborate with the government in promoting the tax regime, he added, “The 2025 Tax Reforms mark a transformative chapter in Nigeria’s fiscal landscape. Since its signing into law on June 26, 2025, it has introduced a new era for Nigerian employees and businesses, including those in real estate.”

Reviewing the federal tax reforms in relation to real estate practice, Dr. Dauda noted that the Nigerian real estate market has recorded steady growth over the years, emerging as one of the nation’s greatest contributors to GDP.

He cited data showing that “the Nigerian real estate market was valued at USD 91.1 million in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 137.8 million by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1 percent between 2024 and 2030.”

Dr. Dauda explained that the real estate industry is multifaceted, involving the acquisition, development, and management of both residential and commercial properties. He highlighted the sector’s broad scope, noting, “This includes residential, commercial, and industrial real estate focused on business operations and manufacturing.”

He added, “Real estate development involves the creation and enhancement of properties, while real estate investment focuses on acquiring properties for financial gain.”

The don stressed that, given the profitability and sustainability of the industry, professionals must understand how the Nigerian Tax Act 2025 affects real estate practice to avoid potential compliance pitfalls.

“It is well known that the most common sources of income from real estate are rental payments, leases, licences, and capital gains arising from the sale of property,” he said, adding that proper application of the new tax regime will benefit NIESV members, their clients, and the government alike.

Meanwhile, Kaduna NIESV Chairman Ishaq Ayodeji Bello pledged to prioritize the welfare of members and uphold ethical standards in service delivery.

He said, “Transparency and integrity will be our watchwords. As executives of this branch, we will uphold these principles in all our engagements and ensure the institution remains a model of professionalism.”
