Panic over ‘loud explosion’ near Owo bank

Residents and passersby were thrown into panic on Saturday after a loud explosion occurred near a commercial bank in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The sound reportedly sent people scampering for safety as thick smoke briefly rose from the scene, forcing traders to flee and nearby shop owners to hastily shut their doors.

The scare comes barely two weeks after the Department of State Services (DSS) alerted the Nigerian Army to an alleged plot by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to launch coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a loud firecracker purchased from a nearby supermarket.

Ayanlade said a suspect, identified as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu, has been arrested and allegedly confessed to his involvement, while his accomplice who allegedly ignited the device is still at large.

“The disturbance was caused by a banger purchased from a nearby supermarket. One Ayoola Daniel Ojumu of Owo has been arrested in connection with the incident and has confessed to his role” he said.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court after investigation is concluded.

Ayanlade urged parents and guardians to caution their wards, especially before and during the festive season, warning that the command would not hesitate to take decisive action against any attempts to breach public peace.

He also called on residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a confidential DSS letter warning of “imminent attacks” by ISWAP terrorists in Ondo and Kogi States.

The letter, addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, listed Eriti-Akoko, Oyin-Akoko and Owo town among targeted communities. It stated that intelligence confirmed plans to carry out coordinated attacks “anytime soon.”

Last week, panic also spread in the Akungba-Akoko community following rumours that Boko Haram members had invaded the area.

However, the Students’ Union Government of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), dismissed the claims as false and capable of causing unnecessary fear among students and residents.

  • Ned Nwoko speaks on Regina Daniels’ alleged leaked medical reports

Ned Nwoko speaks on Regina Daniels’ alleged leaked medical reports

Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) has confirmed the authenticity of medical and toxicology reports of estranged wife Regina Daniels circulating widely on social media.

In a detailed two-part signed by the Communication Team Lead of the Office of Senator Ned Nwoko, the Senator addressed the grave substance abuse issues affecting Regina, revealing that multiple medical facilities had detected dangerously high levels of several substances in her system and that she had been rushed unconscious to an hospital on October 3 following a drug overdose.

The statement listed the substances confirmed by the toxicology report and Serenity Hospital records.

Senator Nwoko’s office emphasised pointed out the rehabilitation centre where Regina had been receiving treatment never denied authoring the reports; it only clarified that it did not leak them, in line with patient confidentiality protocols.

The centre, according to the statement, highlighted repeated interference and enabling behaviour by some of Regina’s siblings who allegedly supplied her with alcohol and marijuana even while she was undergoing treatment, making successful rehabilitation impossible.

The Senator emphasised that his insistence on sustained therapy and rehabilitation stems from genuine concern for Regina’s life and the wellbeing of their two young sons.

The statement reads: “A medical report concerning Regina Nwoko has been circulating online.
The reports are genuine. The rehabilitation centre only clarified that it did not publish or circulate the documents, which is expected because medical institutions must protect client confidentiality. They did not deny authoring the reports; their concern is the leak itself.

“The public is encouraged to read the full reports, because they explain the situation clearly and directly. Both the toxicology report and the Serenity Hospital report confirm the presence of the same substances, all at levels that pose serious health risks: Marijuana, Cocaine, Morphine, Opiates at extremely elevated levels, Alcohol at a critically dangerous level.

“The Nizamiya Hospital report dated 3rd October adds an even more troubling detail. She was brought into the hospital unconscious from a drug overdose. These facts are documented, consistent, and deeply alarming.

“The reports also describe the challenges the rehabilitation centre faced, including persistent interference from her siblings. They openly stated that they do not see anything wrong in giving her alcohol and weed even while she was undergoing rehabilitation, and they have continued enabling her substance use. Their actions made effective treatment impossible and remain one of the major reasons she has not been able to complete rehabilitation.

“Many have questioned why the Senator is insisting on therapy. His determination comes from the clear reality that several of Regina’s recent decisions are not coming from a stable and healthy frame of mind. She is vulnerable, unprotected, and exposed to individuals who exploit her for personal gain. Her online behaviour reflects her current struggles, and she tends to listen more to public voices than to medical professionals or her husband”.

He described her current state as one of vulnerability, where decisions are not being made from “a stable and healthy frame of mind,” and noted that she has become more responsive to public voices than to medical professionals or himself.

While acknowledging the pain caused by the public disclosure of such private medical information, Senator Nwoko’s office stressed that the gravity of the situation left no room for continued silence.

“Past attempts to help her privately did not succeed. Given the severity of the substances detected and the documented hospital emergency where she arrived unconscious, it is no longer an issue that can be handled quietly. At this point, the question becomes: must we wait until Regina reaches a point of irreversible harm before we support her, encourage her to stop substance abuse, and help her commit to rehabilitation.

“Distinguished Senator is genuinely and deeply concerned. His tone, his actions, and his persistence all reflect a man who wants Regina to recover, to be safe, to be clear minded, and to be present for her two young sons. Until those boys are old enough to guide themselves, he will continue doing everything within his responsibility to help restore her wellbeing and ensure that future choices are made with clarity.

“The message remains clear. The reports are authentic. The hospitals and rehabilitation centres did not leak them. The findings speak for themselves. Regina needs consistent treatment, support, and protection. Not denial, not interference, and not enabling. She is a mother, and she deserves the chance to regain her health and stability”.

As of the time of publication, Regina Daniels was yet to make any comment on her estranged husband’s statement.

Four die as Army General returns after abduction scare

An Army General allegedly abducted by Boko Haram  has returned back to base but not without casualties, The Nation has gathered.

Reports of the abduction of the Brigade Commander of 25 Task Force in Damboa Local Government in Borno State circulated the media in the late hours of Friday and  earlier hours of Saturday.

Some online publications reported the possible abduction of the General but could not independently verify the development.

However, some security sources informed that the General returned to the base this morning Saturday on foot.

The statement also informed that two soldiers and two Civilian JTF member were killed in the encounter.

The statement reads: “Troops of 25 Task Force  Brigade, on routine patrol to secure communities around Wajiroko in Azir Multe, Damboa LGA of Borno State, came under a sudden and heavy insurgents fire while returning from a successful patrol within the fringes of Sambisa Forest.

“The patrol team which was led by the Commander 25 Brigade Brigadier General M Uba and comprised troops of 25 Task Force Brigade and members of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) courageously fought through the   insurgents ambush with superior fire power, forcing them to withdraw in dissaray and to abandone their mission.

“During the encounter two brave soldiers and two heroic CJTF members paid the supreme price while on active service to the nation. While commending the troops for their gallantry, the Army high command commiserates with families and associates of the deceased gallants for their heroic sacrifice to the nation.

  • Onemiye seeks prioritisation of care givers’ mental health

Onemiye seeks prioritisation of care givers’ mental health

Founder/CEO of Silver Cross Living Well Empowerment Foundation Ese Onemiye has called for prioritisation of mental health of caregivers, saying they deserve the same care, compassion and support they offer to others.

Onemiye expressed commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of family caregivers across Nigeria, especially women often overlooked.

Onemiye, in a statement, said: “Every day across Nigeria, countless family members quietly step into the role of caregiver, tending to parents, spouses, children, and loved ones living with chronic illnesses. They do this not for recognition or reward, but out of love, duty, and profound commitment.

“Yet, behind their unwavering strength, many suffer in silence. They manage medications, attend clinic visits, coordinate treatments, provide emotional support, and often put their own lives on hold to care for others. They carry the physical burden, the emotional strain, and the financial sacrifice, often without training, respite, or acknowledgment.

“The true weight of caregiving is often hidden from plain sight. While caregivers pour themselves into supporting and healing others, many quietly face physical and emotional exhaustion, isolation, financial strain, anxiety, and fear.

“Women, in particular, shoulder the majority of caregiving responsibilities in Nigeria, becoming the invisible backbone of our chronic care system. They give so much, yet their needs are rarely prioritised.

“The Silver Cross Living Well Initiative believes that caregivers deserve the same care, compassion, and support they offer to others. We are committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of family caregivers across Nigeria, especially women who are too often overlooked.

“Our programmes include workforce reintegration, mental health counseling, support groups, caregiver training & education, and family wellness resources

“This November, as we recognize family caregivers month, we celebrate the unsung heroes who carry so much with so little support. We honor your devotion, your strength, your sacrifices, seen and unseen.”
