Super Falcons grateful for FG’s reward after impressive Women’s World Cup outing

Alaves defender Osinachi Ohale said Super Falcon players are grateful after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu gave each of them $10, 000 for impressive outing at the the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Nigeria left their mark on the global tournament despite crashing out in the Round of 16.

The players’ unshakable belief as a team helped them through a group that contained hosts Australia and Olympic champions Canada, to set up a last-16 tie with England in Brisbane.

Super Falcons had better chances and created more opportunities than their European counterparts in the last-16 tie before they eventually lost 4-2 on penalties after the game ended goalless following 120 minutes of action.

Their memorable display at the Mundial has been praised by football lovers, including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who praised the “unbreakable spirit” and “unwavering strength” when hosting the team members and officials at the Presidential Villa in Abuja before announcing the unprecedented reward.

One of the most experienced players in coach Randy Waldrum’s squad and second goalscorer in their 3-2 victory over Australia in the group stage, Osinachi Ohale said the players are grateful to the First Lady for the kind gesture.

“We are grateful for this unprecedented gesture because for several years we’ve been winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations(Wafcon) and I can’t remember us being honored or rewarded this way, the veteran, Ohale told BBC Sport Africa

“We appreciate the federal government for their support and encouragement. And we also thank Nigerians for the remarkable support during the tournament.

“Nigeria is a country where the public appreciate good things. When you do something good, they will show appreciation, and when you don’t do well, they will still show it – they will forget the good things you’ve been doing, so that’s how it is.

“I’m just happy we were able to put a smile on their faces.”

It is not only the Federal Government that has been hosting or rewarding players of the nine-time African champions. Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma, has earlier met four players from the State – Chiamaka Nnadozie, Tochukwu Oluehi, Desire Oparanozie, and Ohale – handing out $10000 to each and promising the quartet a piece of land.

Players have also been rewarded in Osun when Governor Ademola Adeleke also hosted players from the State – Rasheedat Ajibade and Rofiat Imuran, and the likes of Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Monday Gift have also been hosted by Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Super Falcons will shift their focus toward helping Nigeria secure a place at next year’s Paris 2024 football event of the Olympics.

Tonto Dikeh calls out NDLEA after Naira Marley’s unveiling

Actress-turned-politician, Tonto Dikeh has reacted over the decision of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to bring on board singer, Naira Marley in its fight against drug abuse.

She tagged the agency the ‘most unserious set of folks’, vowing to unfollow them immediately after it shared photos of Naira Marley’s visit to its headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

According to the federal law enforcement agency’s official X handle, Naira Marley visited its headquarter where meet with the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) and others even as he declared his support to join in the War Against Drug Abuse.

In a latest post, the singer, captured in a video, could be heard urging fans and all Nigeria youths “to stop doing drugs because it isn’t good for their wellbeing.”

He continued: “Let us stop substance abuse in any form. I have keyed into this campaign to support NDLEA to stop drugs in the street.

“Please join us. It’s really not good. It makes you go back into crime. It does a lot of thing to you. Thank you very much”, he added.

The Nation reports that Dikeh had signified interest to work with the agency several months ago in a social media post where she expressed her willingness to avail herself for a drug test and partnering them to battle illicit substance abuse. However, it didn’t act on her proposal.

With the latest development, she suggested that her contempt was against the government and not Naira Marley.

She described the development as ‘biggest embarrassment from any government agency/drug law enforcement agency’.

  • Unemployment crisis: Encouraging Nigerian undergraduates to own firms

Unemployment crisis: Encouraging Nigerian undergraduates to own firms

    • By, Peter Lucille

Unemployment is a persistent problem in Nigeria, especially amidst the ongoing recession. Nigeria has an estimated 151 million youths with around 53.40% unemployed, amounting to over 80 million individuals, as per the Youth Unemployment rates released by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2022. The rise in crime rates, particularly ritualism, can be attributed to the macroeconomic problems of unemployment, inflation, and poverty.

Given the large population of the country, it becomes challenging for the government to provide jobs for everyone. Additionally, factors such as the fuel subsidy saga, which has caused an increase in the cost of raw materials and finished goods, can be discouraging for undergraduates which can be quite discouraging for those interested in owning a business.

Financial constraints hinder Nigerian undergraduates from funding their own start-up companies. There are two types of capital required to fund a business: startup capital, which is the money needed before the business opens, and working capital, used for day-to-day expenses until the business becomes cash flow positive and self-sustainable.

To establish a registered company, a Tax Identification Number is required by the Corporate Affairs Commission. Taxes pose financial and administrative burdens for small start-ups, directly impacting their ability to invest and compete in the broader economy. Poor infrastructure also increases operational costs, such as relying on external power sources due to inadequate power supply, resorting to alternative distribution methods due to poor road networks, and facing limitations on the customer base due to limited internet accessibility.

Keeping a close eye on changing policies becomes crucial, as they can significantly affect businesses. For instance, the redesign policy in the first quarter of 2023 led to a shortage of cash circulation, negatively impacting several informal sector businesses. Ignorance in a business setting can be detrimental, causing misinformation about market prices and identifying target demographics, leading to blind marketing and losses in terms of money, time, and resources.

The government plays a crucial role in fostering an environment that encourages youth company ownership. By implementing the right policies and initiatives, they can provide the necessary support and resources for young entrepreneurs to thrive. One way the government can encourage youth company ownership is by offering financial incentives such as tax breaks or grants specifically targeted at youth-led businesses.

These incentives can help alleviate the financial burden associated with starting a company and make entrepreneurship a more viable option for young people. Additionally, providing access to low-interest loans or venture capital funding can empower young entrepreneurs to pursue their business ideas. The government can also establish entrepreneurship programs and workshops that provide mentorship, training, and guidance to young people looking to start their own companies.

By equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge, the government can boost their chances of success. Moreover, creating networking platforms and incubation hubs where young entrepreneurs can connect, collaborate, and receive guidance from experienced professionals can further support their journey.

Lastly, the government can encourage public-private partnerships, where established companies provide mentorship, investment, and guidance to young entrepreneurs. This collaboration can help bridge the knowledge and resource gap, allowing youth-led businesses to flourish. Overall, the government’s proactive involvement and support are instrumental in fostering a culture of youth entrepreneurship and inspiring the next generation of business leaders.
