  • Petition challenging my victory frivolous, lawmaker tells tribunal

Petition challenging my victory frivolous, lawmaker tells tribunal

Senator Sharafadeem Alli (Oyo South) has described the petition of the senatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in  the February 25 National Assembly Election, Joseph Tegbe as frivolous and dead on arrival.

He urged the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss the petition filed against him by Tegbe and his party with substantial cost.

This was contained in the joint final written address of Alli, APC and adopted by his counsels before the Tribunal sitting in Ibadan.

Alli, APC and INEC were the first, second and third respondent respectively in the petition filed by Tegbe and PDP.

Tegbe dragged Alli, APC and Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to the tribunal over his loss, argueing that Alli’s victory was due to over-voting in some pollling units, calling for cancellation and rerun of the election in the 45 polling units.

But Alli in the joint address, said the petitioner had failed to establish that he did not score the majority of votes cast at the election, describing Tegbe’s action as mere academic exercise.

He said that the petitioners also failed to proof over-voting in the polling units alleged and failed to demonstrate that the alleged over-voting inured him as well as the APC.

Alli stressed that the spurious over-voting could be for any of the candidates, either the petitioner, respondent and any other contestant in the election.

He said it was evident that the

petitioners could not establish the complaint in the petition and failed to prove the petition as it is.

The lawmaker said that there was no duty on them to call witnesses to disprove what has not been proven.

Alli said that the petitioner ought to have concentrated on the duty imposed on them by law by discharging the burden of proof which they have failed to do.

“We cannot be dragged into dissipating energy to disprove a petition that has not been proved, the petitioners witness clearly fell below the standard expected to sustain the reliefs sought in this petition having cross-examined the witnesses of the petitioners.”

“The respondent have extracted sufficient evidence which nailed the coffin of the petition of the petitioners which in law was dead on arrival,” he said.

The lawmaker said the petitioner failed to satisfy the tribunal the alleged overvoting, though not conceded, was traceable to the first and second respondents.

He said that the petitioners have not creditably made out case for any election in the senatorial district, urging the lordships to disregard their argument.

Alli urged the lordships to dismiss the petition in the interest of justice, saying the petitioners have not established any fact to justify the reliefs sought.

“The appellant/petitioner failed to prove its case to be entitled to the reliefs sought by it, we therefore urge your lordships to disregard the argument of the Petitioners and dismiss the Petition with substantial cost.”

The first and second respondents’ counsels are Mr Yusuf Alli, SAN; Mr Kolawole Eleja, SAN; Mr Kazeem Gbadamosi, SAN; Mr Adeboye Sobanjo, Mr Lawal Saliu, Prof. Yahya Hambali, Mr Wahab Ismail and Dr. R.O. Abdulkadir.

  • Why players are choosing Chelsea, by Pochettino

Why players are choosing Chelsea, by Pochettino

Chelsea’s manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that players are choosing to move to West London because they are feeling something unique about the club.

The Blues began their season with a thrilling 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge last weekend. The club has been very busy in the transfer window after a disappointing 12th position in the league last term.

They have spent £254m on new players this summer following the arrival of Angelo, Robert Sanchez, Alex Disasi, Lesley Ugochukwu, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia.

Even though the London club won’t be involved in any European adventure this season, the Blues have been able to beat other rivals in signing some of the most sought-after players in the world. An example is the recent case of Ecuador International, Moses Caicedo, who refused to sign for Liverpool despite an agreement reached between the Merseyside club and Brighton.

Belgian teenager, Romeo Lavia, has since followed the path of the former Brighton midfielder in favoring a move to Chelsea amidst interest from Liverpool, and Pochettino believed that there is something special motivating players in deciding to join the club.

“That’s about the player’s decision. It’s their decision if they come here. It wasn’t a competition, it was a player’s decision to join us. That makes us very happy and they talk very highly about our owners and our sporting directors in the way they work,” the former Tottenham manager said in a press conference

“The players wanted to come here because I think they are feeling something special. I hope they are feeling something special,” he said.

The Argentine also commented on British record signing Moses Caicedo, who joined for a fee of around £115m from Brighton and Hove Albion this week.

“The club worked really really hard about that. I have to congratulate the owners and the sporting directors Laurence(Stewart) and Paul(Winstanley) because the deal was amazing.

“To add these types of players like Moses or Romeo(Lavia) and all the players singing, I think it was fantastic work from the club and I think we need to congratulate the job they are doing.”

He concluded with Romeo Lavia whose signing from Southampton was completed today.

“We all know him, his quality, his profile. I think he’s the perfect player for the project.

“We are excited and we so happy to add him to the squad,” he said.

Chelsea will aim to claim their first victory in this new Premier League campaign when they move across the city to play West Ham United in a London derby on Sunday.

  • Brassel praises Tottenham on Harry Kane’s proposed replacement Gift Orban

Brassel praises Tottenham on Harry Kane’s proposed replacement Gift Orban

European football expert Andy Brassel has described Nigeria and Gent striker Gift Orban as a player with huge potential following constant speculations linking the 21-year-old with a move to England.

The Nigeria prospect has been reported to be on the radar of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, who are finding a replacement for Harry Kane after the Englishman completed a £100 move to Germany with Bayern Munich a few days ago.

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, has since confirmed that the North London club has a concrete interest in signing the Nigeria International this summer, and a recent report revealed further that talks have already begun between Tottenham and the intermediaries chosen by the player.

Orban announced himself to Europe last season when he netted three goals in 205 seconds for KAA Gent during the second leg Europa Conference League Round of 16 fixture against Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey.

The 21-year-old ended his first six months with the Belgian club with 22 goals in 20 games and has had a fantastic start to the 2023/24 campaign in the Jupiler Pro League and the Europa Conference League qualifiers with five goals in as many games.

“He has an impressive ability to manoeuvre the ball between defenders, and his prowess inside the box and instinctual movement make him a formidable presence, always finding himself in the right place at the right time to capitalize on second balls and wide deliveries.

“Orban has worked all his abilities together to form an irresistible force in front of the goal, drawing the attention of scouts and pundits, and among them was Andy Brassel, who described him as a player that has the potential to play in the Premier League, but questioned if he’s ready to adapt immediately if signed by Tottenham Hotspur.

“They’re going in a completely different direction because he’s young, raw, explosive and he’s done brilliantly since his arrival in Belgium, Brassel said on Sky Sports’ Transfer show

“But in terms of him being ready, you have to ask that because he did brilliantly in the back end of the

“To expect him to make that step up to scoring in the Premier League every week is a big step. They can sort of buy themselves some time because he’s got enormous potential,” he said.

He said that playing a talented player like Brazilian forward Richarlison alongside him could help get the best out of the Nigerian striker.

“They have got Richarlison who can lead the line for a moment, do that a bit as well, so they expect to get more out of him.

“When they’ve got Richarlison who had a frustrating season for one reason or another, certainly backing up Harry Kane is not easy for any top striker it’s fair to say. Going for someone a bit younger may be a sensible approach,” he said.

The 21-year-old is valued at £30m by Gent, and should they later convince a buyer to pay that amount for him, this will bring a massive income for the Belgian club, who bought Orban for just £3.3m from Norwegian club Stabeak six months ago.
