The silent force driving Nigeria’s tech innovation

In a landscape teeming with tech startups, developer bootcamps, and digital policy roundtables, one name keeps surfacing quietly among Nigeria’s most respected technology professionals: the Digital Innovation Assembly (DIA).

You won’t find loud campaigns or open calls for membership. That’s because the Assembly isn’t structured like most tech communities. It’s not open to all and that’s exactly the point.

The DIA is often referred to within industry circles as a sort of “inner chamber” for individuals whose work has demonstrably shaped Nigeria’s digital future. From financial systems architects to artificial intelligence researchers, its members represent the top tier of technology leadership across sectors.

Whether it’s in banking, health, public infrastructure, or mobility, those admitted into the Assembly are known to have moved the needle through scale, influence, or breakthrough outcomes.

But what sets the DIA apart isn’t just the caliber of its members. It’s how they’re selected. There’s no application form. No self-nomination process. Prospective members are identified through referrals and then quietly vetted not just by one person, but by a panel of senior technology experts drawn from different sectors of the industry.

These are people who understand what real impact looks like. They’re not impressed by titles or buzzwords. They look for measurable results, systems that work, and contributions that have influenced how people live, work, or interact with digital tools in Nigeria.

One member, who asked to remain anonymous due to the Assembly’s low-profile culture, shared that the evaluation process involved multiple conversations and case-based reviews of previous work.

“They wanted to know the actual problem I solved and who it affected,” he said. “It wasn’t about building flashy apps, it was about long-term value.”

The DIA was formed as an initiative to create an informed, multi-disciplinary coalition of innovators and policy contributors. Over time, it has grown into a trusted advisory circle for public sector initiatives and private sector scale-ups alike. Its collective voice has helped shape national digital strategies, guide ethical technology deployments, and offer mentorship to rising talents in universities and accelerators across the country.

Members of the Assembly include CTOs of top financial institutions, senior engineers at global tech companies, founders of high-growth startups, and consultants embedded in government transformation teams. But even with its growing influence, the association has deliberately stayed out of the limelight, opting instead for substance over spectacle.

To many in the know, being invited into the DIA isn’t just a badge of honor it’s an acknowledgment that your work holds national relevance. It’s a signal that you’re not only building technology, but building the future.

  • Naira Marley not our ambassador, says NDLEA

Naira Marley not our ambassador, says NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Saturday said music star, Afeez Adeshina Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley has not been appointed as its ambassador.

The agency said its recent engagement with musician was to encourage him to use his skills and platforms to put out contents that will discourage millions of his followers and Nigerian youths from substance abuse.

It said reports on Naira Marley’s appointment as NDLEA ambassador was outright falsehood.

The artiste last Thursday led members of his team on a visit to the National Headquarters of the agency in Abuja to express his preparedness to join the fight against drug abuse in the country.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement, said this clarification became necessary following continued misrepresentation of the purpose of the visit especially on online platforms where some reports suggest that the British-Nigerian singer was appointed as an NDLEA ambassador.

The statement reads: “This is misleading and absolute falsehood as the pictures of the visit and the short video containing Naira Marley’s advocacy message to his followers were properly captioned and shared by the Agency without any suggestion of such appointment.

“The decision by the Agency to encourage Naira Marley with over seven million followers, half the population of those who abuse drugs in Nigeria, use his platform share anti-substance abuse messages as against using same to promote and glamourize drug abuse with the dire consequence of misleading millions of Nigerian youths into their peril, is to create a balance between our drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.

“This is also in line with the Agency’s whole society approach to the fight against drug abuse, and in tune with global best practice as well as the theme for this year’s World Drug Day; People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.

“When an artiste, who professes marijuana is good to seven million followers turns a new leaf after some serious counselling, do we reject him, turn our back to him and allow him continue in his old habit or we accept him, give him a chance so he can reach out to his followers to quit substance abuse.

“In other words, why should we take our anti-drug abuse advocacy messages to schools, churches, mosques, market places, motor parks, Nollywood, kannywood, traditional rulers, labour and the entertainment industry but when one of their members accepts to turn a new leaf, we turn our back to him? These are questions those opposed to Naira Marley’s needed change may have to ponder on.

“Indeed, no one is better suited to take the message against drug abuse to the Marlians than the head of the same movement. This is no time for mischief or cynicism but the right moment we all need to encourage the singer and hold him accountable to his public commitment against substance abuse in his video message to his followers in the overall interest of our youths.”

Septuagenarian leads protest against alleged land grabbing in Anambra community

Over twenty family members claiming ownership of Ogbodogbo and Ogbogene land in Obosi in Idemili North local government of Anambra state on Saturday protested plots by alleged thugs and hoodlums to take over their ancestral land.

They called on government, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to save them from those who claimed to have bought the land from the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Chukwudubem Iweka 111.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, a Septugenarian, Emeka Anyaefulu alleged that they have been severely prevented by armed thugs from gaining access to the land.

He said they entered a contractual land agreement with a Real estate developing firm, Soul City Integrated Resources limited for the purpose of construction of a smart mega city estate.

According to him: “The Igwe of Obosi and the so-called Obosi land committee has prevented us from access to our land. Our lives are in danger; our land is being sold out to the highest bidder; this is injustice of the highest order.

“We are hear to cry to Governor Soludo and all security agencies of the state and federal government to come and save us from the hands of our oppressors, enough is enough.”

Director, Soul City Integrated Limited, Michael Nwokoye also accused the monarch of being behind disruptive plans of building a mega smart city on the contested land.

He said the project, on a massive land of over 273 hectares known as Ogbodogbo along the 2nd Niger Bridge approved by the Nigerian Inland WaterWays Authority and government for take off has been stalled over the years.

“We are gathered here today because Igwe Chukwudubem Iweka and his cabal have been frustrating our efforts to get the Mega smart city project underway. This has been on here for over three years now.

“He promised to settle boundary dispute between the original owners of the land who are all here with me. But instead of keeping to his promise, he planted hoodlums and militants to scare away the owners of the land.

Reacting, Igwe Iweka described the allegations as fraudulent, insisting the protesters never met with real land owners but connived with extended relations of the families to demonstrate.

The monarch, who spoke through his Counsel, Barr. Mega Ikegwuonu advised that Mr. Nwokoye should get to renegotiate with the authorized family heads that own the land.

“Nwokoye never met with real owners of the land. Instead, he connived with some  impostors and extended relatives of the family members to stage a kangaroo protest in an attempt to hoodwink the members of the public and the press.

“He should seize from fomenting trouble and go back to the drawing board to renegotiate with the authorized family heads of the owners of the land rather than parading renegades posed as land owners in the name of Soul City Integrated Resources Ltd,” the monarch added.

Alleged s3xual assault’: NBA probes UNICAL Law Dean, judge bribery claim

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has set up a panel to probe allegations of s3xual assault against the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Prof. Cyril Ndifon.
