FCMB offers N10 Million clean energy loan to households, small businesses

Nigerian households and small businesses looking to acquire solar panels, batteries, inverters and other green energy equipment now have access to as much as N10 million to buy these assets through the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Energy Finance Loan.

The loan is designed to help homes and small businesses like hospitals, schools, restaurants, bars, stores, hotels, and fashion places keep life and work going by using clean energy.

Commenting on the Energy Loan product, the Managing Director of FCMB, Mrs. Yemisi Edun, described it as “another bold intervention by the lender to unlock the potential of the renewable and clean energy sector, provide relief to Nigerians, and encourage clean energy.”

She said: “Access to energy drives economic growth and development. The FCMB Energy Finance offering is a reaffirmation of our commitment to eco-friendly energy finance to fight climate change, drive the growth of businesses, improve the quality of life, and accelerate development through environmentally sustainable energy solutions. With the removal of the petrol subsidy, more Nigerians are focusing on alternative energy sources to power their homes and businesses.

“We will continue to scale up our support to individuals and businesses to enable the country to take full advantage of the opportunities in these areas for the overall benefit of humanity’’.

The Bank upgraded the product to lessen the impact of reduced subsidies on traditional fossil fuels, which has caused a rise in petrol prices across the country, given the pervasive use of small gasoline generators to power households and small businesses.

Group Head of Business Banking at FCMB, Mr. George Ogbonnaya, said:

“We understand the challenges individuals and businesses face in securing funding to provide clean and sustainable power. The FCMB Energy Finance loan is structured to eliminate these challenges. It is a flexible facility with two to seven years of repayment options at competitive interest rates. We urge Nigerians, especially small business owners, to take advantage of this opportunity to reduce energy costs for their homes and businesses’’.

Applauding the product, the President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, Mr. Ayo Ademilua, said:

“The energy finance loan is innovative and coming at the right time when the market needs alternative energy solutions mostly due to PMS price increase”.

Speaking on carbon financing, the CEO of Consistent Energy Limited, Dr. Segun Adaju, said:

“The 2023 Electricity Act promotes private-public sector partnerships, allowing private companies to participate in the renewable energy space and catalyze investments through carbon trading. The carbon trading market has become attractive, and more parties are beginning to promote carbon trading in Africa following the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) established in 2022 to unlock the potential of voluntary carbon markets for financing Africa’s energy, climate, and development goals. It is heartwarming that FCMB has keyed into this by providing a platform through the FCMB Energy Finance Loan product to provide the much-needed funding to Nigerians to acquire affordable clean energy sources’’.

FCMB has taken the lead in deepening the renewable energy space through a three-pronged approach: capacity building, providing access to funding, and opportunities to connect renewable energy developers with end-users. The Bank has supported over 50% of the key developers in Nigeria with debt financing for mini-grids, commercial, and solar home systems. It has so far disbursed over N7 billion for the execution of energy efficiency projects, cutting across mini-grids, solar energy, and other energy efficiency projects.

  • FG plans to cut salt in food by 30% in 2025, says NAFDAC

FG plans to cut salt in food by 30% in 2025, says NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has stated that the Federal Government plans to reduce salt/sodium in food by 30 percent in 2025.

It stated that this target is contained in the National Multi-Sectoral Action Plan (NMSAP) for the Prevention and Non-communicable Disease, 2019-2025.

The agency noted research has shown that excessive salt/sodium in the diet has been implicated in high blood pressure, heart diseases and stroke. Also, too much unhealthy fats in the diet can raise cholesterol levels which increases the risk of heart disease.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made this known during a stakeholders’ engagement with operators of hotels and quick service restaurants, popularly called Eateries, in Lagos.

According to a statement by the agency, Prof. Adeyeye expressed grave concerns about health risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) associated with the consumption of foods high in salt, sugars, saturated fats, and trans fatty acids, adding that “also of concern is the misuse of food additives for enhancing the appearance of food, the colour, texture, taste, and shelf life.

“Proliferation of many NCDs is related to the foods we eat, including other poor health conditions, such as impaired growth and development, micronutrient deficiencies,non-communicable/communicable diseases, and even mental illness.

“Adhering to the provisions of Good Hygiene Practice (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) ensures that food prepared is safe to eat and enables businesses to protect their reputation.

“There is a need to be constantly vigilant and mindful of the safety and quality of the food prepared to ensure the health of the public, considering the huge patronage you receive.

“Nigeria has in the past launched her first National Multi-Sectoral Action Plan (NMSAP) for the Prevention and Non-communicable Disease 2019-2025. This policy document advocates for a multi-sectoral approach to reduce salt/sodium in food by 30 percent by the year 2025,” she stated.

  • NAF airstrikes hit oil thieves, terrorists, others

NAF airstrikes hit oil thieves, terrorists, others

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it has simultaneously decimated several criminal elements in the last few days through airstrikes in various theatres of operation.

Director, Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Commodore Edward Gabkwet, announced this in a statement on Sunday.

In the Niger Delta region, Gabkwet said that airstrikes were targeted at the nefarious activities of oil thieves which had continued to adversely affect the environment of the region as well as the oil output of the nation.

He said the air component of Operation Delta Safe on Friday, August 11, conducted interdiction missions at an illegal refining site situated Southwest of Bille, a coastal town in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers.

Gabkwet said that similar airstrikes were the same day, extended to a well-known IPOB Camp at Orsumoghu, Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.

According to him, intelligence had revealed that the proscribed IPOB elements in makeshift camps were sighted preparatory to an impending attack on innocent citizens when the need to effectively engage them arose.

He said the airstrike was subsequently carried out and deemed successful.

Gabkwet said that air strikes were also conducted the same day by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai at a location 1.5km East of Arra, a once-deserted terrorists’ hideout near Sambisa Forest.

He said that earlier reconnaissance on the location had revealed terrorists were regrouping there after the enclave was cleared about six months ago.

“There were strong indications that these terrorists had fled from locations around Lake Chad after the areas came under intense bombardment by NAF aircraft.

“The location east of Arra was consequently attacked to decimate the terrorists and deny them settling at the location and using the same as a staging point.

“Footage of the aftermath of the strike later revealed it was successful as several terrorists were neutralized and structures destroyed, while the few surviving terrorists were seen scampering away in disarray.

“At the end, their ability to attack friendly forces as well as innocent civilians were degraded,” he said.
